The Next morning Double D had woke up. He heard Kevin thumping about the hallway curing the inanimate objects in his way. He made his way out the door, but not before checking on him. Through his position lying on the bed he had gathered for the last few days he had been checking on him. Not that Double D minded, he had given up his aspirations of escaping the moment he found himself cleaning his dinner dish. Since then he had to rethink a few things he had came to the cul-de-sac to do. Revenge was had been some how pushed to the bottom of his list. With a heavy sigh he got to the empty house, making quick work of the chores he gathered some clothing that suited his fancy. He fastened his hat on his unruly mob of black hair. He had found a sticky note telling him to inspect his property and to get the groceries. He stepped out of the house, surveying his home just across the street. The house seem the same as the day he left it. He decided he would find out its condition after he walked to the store. As if by instinct he knew the streets again like rereading book. He was able to find out something new each time. They had developed the area more. The junk yard had been transformed into a golf course and a country club. As he got closer to the place where he once got his education there were more uniform houses until he had reached the small town. Where there was once only a candy store and a few other boutiques, there little offices and chain stores reaching into his slice of suburbia. He found the store still thriving among them.
Walking through the sliding doors he was hit with a wave of AC
“WELCOME TO FOODMART” and obnoxious voice “Plank says that there’s a 99 cent special on corn!” A bounding bald headed kid, with a plank of weathered wood. “Hello there sir would you like…. “
Double D was trying in earnest to get away from the boy he didn’t want to be recognized at this point in his return.
“Sorry um corn isn’t on my list… he scooted away.”
“You look familiar didn’t you come here last week?”
“NO!”
“Last Month?”
“NO” He rounded the corner to grab the first item on the list.
“Last year”
“Look okay … I used to live here and then move and then came back okay!”
The boy gave him a queer look “Really?” He left him alone and was continent with following him and staring at him in an odd stalkers way. On occasion he would ask are you really going to get that and random inquisitions that came to mind. By the time he reached the check out he had been talked in to buying a few things that weren’t on his list. Until he was stopped by his manager he just kept talking. While Double D was exited the store. He made his way back down the lane. He passed by the playground where he used to play. So nostalgic, he thought. He found his home in a clearing and a bright yellow bus pulled up. He noticed two figures getting off the bus. He waited until they disappeared in there respective houses before making his way to his.
Rummaging around in his pocket he found his keys and commenced in opening the door again. A rain cloud of dust hit his cap. The house looked as Kevin described. A dust version of Pompeii. It was a wander that the government hadn’t clamed the property. It was strange to him to be his home. He walked around the perimeter slowly. He made his way upstairs to his room. All his things nearly persevered like fossils, even his bed was the same. He left with a slight smiles.
He paused outside, locking the door he noticed a girl with claret color hair. Even being away 6 years there are some people you don’t forget. In a sudden moment of shock he let one of the bags slip out of his hand. It certainly gained him a glance and possibly a double take. She had grown nicely into her woman hood. Her genetics didn’t make her top heavy as a matter of fact there was barely anything at all that would arouse a man. She had the peachy skin of a girl that had toned to be a lackey of the cheering squad. Her hair no longer held the perfectly tamed bangs yet they swoop over parting her hair. The rest of it was still straight. She was wearing a burgundy and white school cheer leading uniform. She scampered down the street, slowing down to almost complete stop when she noticed him staring at him. Her feet spun towards him.
With no where to hide he couldn’t avoid the confrontation “Ed is that you?” He nodded picking up the groceries ready to run. The next string of questions could have only been expected.
“where have you been? Why did you come back? How are you?” Her voice seemed a bit more docile then before. By now it would have easily fallen into a tantrum or anger.
“You grew up Sarah” She smiled running her hands through her hair, a nervous tick she had had since she was little. At last she hit him with the bomb.
“Ed… where is…Ed?” Of course she didn’t know. He set his things on the ground. Since he was going to be restarting he would have hope to have more time to gather what to say to her. But he would let her find out for herself. He took of the hat crowning the top of his head and began to search inside between the fabric where he kept his secrets. While he rummaged he didn’t hear footsteps joining them. A fair haired boy sporting a boys cheerleading uniform was coming to gather his friend. Just as Edd pulled out a crinkly folded up piece of parchment, the join yanked at Sarah “Sarah Were going to be late!” Puberty was hitting Jimmy hard turning his dainty little voice into that of a tanner “Excuse me sir,” he stopped when he noticed who it was. His anemic body found only the flushed color in his face to loose. A peculiar gaze fell on the letter that Sarah was receiving.
“Lets go Sarah!” he urged even more frantically however she wouldn’t budge. She stood transfix on the paper she was slowly opening. Her eyes scanned over the paper quickly and then once more to be sure what she was reading was true.
The surface of her eyes yielded tears. “Look mister I don’t know what you did but I’m not going to stand here and let you make her cry.” Jimmy took the paper from her hands commencing to rip it up, but Double D took it from him. The notion finally jargoned his memory. Sympathy was being over ridden by revenge and anger. The pale fist clenched by the fury of 6 years of pent of resentment and torture. He swung at him connecting his first blow with his newly aligned jaw. Another was soon to gouge into the stomach of the boy.
Jimmy could no longer play ignorant the brute had gotten the upper hand. His eyes were no longer that of the intelligent man that he knew but a savage animal proving Darwin to be right. Jimmy sent his hands in a defense around his face, years of being boy on the cheer squad had gave him muscles but Edd’s speed had already had his hands clamped around Jimmy’s neck. He aimed to give a quick asphyxiation to Jimmy keeping a promise that he had made to his fellow Ed brethren back towards the final days of their sanity. He notice his hands tugging at his to be freed and Sarah in earnest pleading for Edd to return to his sensible self. For a brief second he almost let go but the memory would have driven him to murder if weren’t for Rolf. He pile drive himself into Edd pinning him between his weight and the pavement. Jimmy took in fill of oxygen before he yelled at Double D kicking the man while was already down in his bruised side.
“You Mad man! You Belong in a white Jacket.!” He spat on him turning his flushed face to Sarah in an effort to gain her sympathies. She shrunk away from him. The violent behavior, the note things just didn’t seem right in the cul-de-sac anymore. “I’m… I’m not going to the game… “ She spun around and ran into her house. The strong girl held her water till behind closed doors, the letter tightly at her chest the words taken to heart. For they were her brothers last and they were written to her.
“Get off of me Rolf” Double D wheezed Jimmy’s eyes traced her steps interrupted by the voice of his advisory. He cursed him coming back as his hand reached for his delicate throat.
“Don’t move Rolf… he might attack me again” The farming boy followed the command.
“Really Rolf, your crushing my lung” he coughed
“Don’t like the feeling do we?” Jimmy began to pace about Ed. His eyes noticed a few changes. Some of his bones were visible, he was taller but then what boy usually didn’t get taller with time? He had long hair big whoop most of it had horrible split ends. A his skin was as white as Jimmy’s and yet his was the only one that was dead like. When Jimmy paused his detest for Edd had grown even more, time had been naturally given him the good looks that are worth being envious of.
“What did you give Sarah?” He bent over to hear the answer
“None of your business you bastard!” Edd would have yelled it given the energy. His anger had drained out of him leaving nothing but a throbbing head ache added to the weight of Rolf.
“Fair enough Ill ask her my self” He strutted off to the house where the red head became a recluse.
When he was gone far enough Rolf let Double D off the ground with the promises of not attacking Jimmy again… that day. He even helped him deliver the groceries safely unto the kitchen counter. However Edd was unaware it came with a price. Edd muttered to himself under the watchful amusement of Rolf, who was standing Idly in the corner. Every once in a while he would laugh but the sock head wouldn’t hear it. His mind was reviewing the events that had happened to him. His hands so close to killing Jimmy. The hands, his hands were constantly under his scrutiny with each can he put in the cabinet. Sarah and Rolf probably thought him a monster. Each time he glanced at a finger he couldn’t tell if he should be glad he didn’t finish Jimmy off or anger. He suddenly felt the weight of tired crushing his shoulders making them slump forward. His head had crashed into cabinets all thoughts were trying to leave but a traffic jam prevented them from going.
A hand slid across his stomach from behind pulling him gently against a snug body. He melted into the warmth slowly rocking him back and forth oddly enough calming him.
“I would have killed him … he’s so insignificant compared to the pain you suffered. “ The voice was gentle
“Next time kill him … or Ill do it for you” and it was coaxing him into murder. “Your not my conscience” Edd said aloud snapping himself out of his daze. His conscience would never have said something like that. The door slammed shut in the distance. Double D thought it was stress that was making him have hallucinations
Sarah looked the crumpled envelope, even though school had cured most of his reading and writing deficiencies , it still had his imaginative touch. The outside of the paper was littered with drawings of dinosaurs and one-eyed creatures. Her nails instinctively found her mouth and a shaky one found the edge of the envelope. Not a word for 6 years and still no words yet letters. How long had Edd concealed them with in his hat? Looked around her room checking her privacy before letting the tab slip open and the tattered paper fall out. She immediately stopped biting her nails grabbing the letter with both hands to read. Her eyes scanned over the paper words began to leap out at her like I’ll be home soon, and please don’t tell mommy. He was always rather afraid of getting in trouble. She paused in her reading growing rather nostalgic. Her mind turned to curious thoughts but the letter soon turn dramatic and dire the last words written on the page My master says I’m to sick to live Sarah, and that I’m not going to make it… at this point she noticed dried spots of blood at the edge of the page … I'm the only thing holding Double D back from leaving since Eddy left
