Days, had passed for Edd and he had nearly intergraded himself into the house frame. Until He was sure that his pursuers weren’t going to look for him he was confounded to Kevin’s homestead. With out his sticky notes to guide him Edd found himself not so sure what to do at first. His first day alone was spent doing nothing but sleeping and thumbing around his surroundings except Kevin’s room was always off limits. One day his curiosity would peak, he thought but brushed by it.
Double D was sick of being bored, he had already gone through Kevin’s entire library of medical and science books, surprised that the boy still had an once of literacy in him let alone brain cells that would work. Loafing around he found the boom and began to sweep the kitchen slowly falling back into his anal retentive tendencies of compulsively cleaning and chanting messy, messy, messy . Had he not been so shaken he would have noticed the germs before. It was then he made it his mission to keep the house clean. If it was going to be his new prison .
Near the end of the week, Kevin had completely forgotten that his parents would be home. He had grown accustomed to Double D easing the loneliness of his home. Each night after class he would be welcomed by the drifting smell of some concoction that Edd had made calling it food the funny thing was it actually tasted good. For the moment he had stopped bugging him about his mysterious past and decided to help him move onwards with his life.
Kevin move a clump of yellow noodles to he edge of his plate not sure how to form what he was thinking into a coherent sentence. Unknowing he could feel the steady emerald beads studying him like an artist would for a painting. For once he was asking the questions instead of Kevin.
“Are you okay?” The Famous opener that was usually followed by Nothing or I’m fine however not to day
“Um… I was thinking” He waited for some witty retort but he guessed that Edd could sense he was serious
“yes?”
“My parents are due home on Sunday. I “ he paused still trying to speak “I don’t think they would like the idea of some one staying here unless they knew why…”
At first Double D thought it was some new ploy to get him to divulge his past again but common sense told him that he was right. But he let him continue.
“Which is why I want to rent a room at your house….
“But my house is only ….” It came to Edds attention that his is what he didn’t want to talk about
“Your house has been empty for 3 years”
“3 years?”
He shuck his head in agreement to his previous statement “They… “ Kevin sighed “They were actually the only parents that continued to search for you guys after you disappeared.” His eyes blinked, the images of missing posters with massive amounts of money offered at the effort of their sons safe return. Nightly the cul-de-sac was buzzing with two bright circles normally not returning till mid-night.
“My parents aren’t … were are they? He saw Kevin shrugged, slowly, finally picking up his fork “You can see for yourself tomorrow”
“Wait your letting me out of the house?”
“Well I was actually going to ask you to run some errands but then I had been sitting on this problem for a long time. They wont like the idea of me moving out but I know how you feel about the telling others what happened.” This all might have been happening just a bit to fast for the Ed boy. His parents were gone? Were could they have gone, where they dead… Kevin wanted to move in with him? Double D shuck his head.
“Um… ah…” The first thing that came out of his mouth were syllables of words that should have been words. When he stopped himself from stuttering Double D was able to say “Don’t worry about the house… I know where all the emergency funds are and paper work …and…” his voice trailed off
“Are you sure you haven’t seen my parents?”
Kevin nodded not sure that Double d was taking the news the right way, but then he realized the boy still had a naïve hope about things.
“Surely some one must have been paying the back taxes on the property keeping it in our name and out of foreclosure.” Kevin suddenly jolted upwards his eyes averting from his food for a moment, the rather clever boy had managed to blow a balloon of happiness. “And I’m sure they wont mind if I let you stay so long as you pay rent” he chuckled the old Edd was slowly returning to the cul-de-sac.
“You should check the house for yourself tomorrow while your out…. But don’t stay out to long and try not to let people recognize you yet.”
“Why?”
“We still haven’t been to the police to tell them that your not missing and give them a report on who kidnapped you… If the Kidnappers are still looking for you, you would be an easy target” Kevin decided it was best not to let a silence grow between, not after Double D seem to have shaken out of the shackles of his former self. “Besides Rolf is on the prowl for a new boy toy”
“Speaking of Rolf, are you aware he has one of your house keys? Was there something going on between you two?”
“Ill tell you mine if you tell me yours” With that he stood up to clear his plate.
“I was just…”
“ JubeJubes”
“What?”
“And Jimmy… look Kevin I’m to tired to go into a flash back tonight… or the dishes”
“What?” Still confused he had barely caught the last words. What did Jimmy have to do with JubeJubes other then being the inventor.
“Kanker… and needles…scams…” His voice got lower and lower with each word he spoke, until like a rollercoaster on a set path he had navigated his way through the room and up the stairs still mumbling the words over.
Leaving him alone for the moment was all Kevin could do for him. Sure he needed a therapist but he couldn’t afford one for his friend. Rather then standing around doing nothing Kevin marched upstairs determined to drag Double D up before he drowned himself, in his past. Before pushing past the threshold, he paused to admire his ashen angel embossed upon the navy waves of cotton. The hat had long been abandoned leaving his hair to wash down his back giving the appearance of a silhouetted tree. His head faced the only window in the room, languid pools of emerald watching the world go to sleep.
Oh Edd, why cant you trust your troubles in me? A ripple of sadness radiated from his heart, flushing fully in his face. Such thoughts shouldn’t be in his head at this moment. But there they were. He would never openly admit that as cliché as it was, but some how with in that week Double D had became the reason for waking up in the morning. Instead of using his extra 5 minutes to sleep in, those moments were spent, making sure that Edd wasn’t some sort of phantasm. He would linger in the doorway shortly before re-tucking him in. Kevin shuck them off as simply being lust in the wake of his new found independence from Rolf.
He found himself looming over the boy, who still hadn’t noticed his presence. He slipped into the room nimbly easing on to the edge of the mattress that was un used by his flopped out arms. Kevin found he couldn’t resist staring at the scars that lined the boys back. He did something that used to sooth Rolfs rabid anger. Taking the palm of his hands he circled his shoulder blades gently. He felt him hunch, the tension in him building like a dam. But Kevin continued his rhythmic ministrations
Kevin gently leaned over near his neck, The warmth of his breath heating up his skin and yet Double D still had not moved. Kevin rapped his arms around his mind section. The rise and fall of his chest could be felt through the pulse against his ribcage. Periodically he would hold his breath. After what seemed like forever Double D relaxed into the curves of Kevin’s body, whom was drifting some where on a raft between his dreams and the blankets around him
He opened his mouth to tell the tale.
