Second Chances
“GOOD EVENING, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!”
Bolin was exceptionally excited as he stood in the middle of the playing field at the Pro-Bending Arena. He didn’t address a legion of his fans though, or even a few hundred Pro-Bending supporters. Instead his audience consisted of his older brother, the head of Future Industries, and the Avatar herself. Nevertheless, the smile on his face was evident that he was happy to have his friends there.
“Now, given what we’ve all been through recently, with business troubles, corruption and just flat-out the destruction of the world, I figured it would be good for us to enjoy something that didn’t involve ancient evil spirits determined to bring thousands of years of darkness.”
“I shouldn’t be here…” Mako groaned.
“Oh, come on.” Asami replied. “Don’t you want to see your little brother in the first ever mover?”
“It’s not that I’m not proud of him…” He explained. “…it’s just…Chief Bei Fong just promoted me, and I don’t want to do anything to risk that.”
“Didn’t she give you the day off?” Korra inquired.
“Hey, it’s always best to stay on her good side.” He answered.
Korra paused for a moment, before raising an eyebrow. “She told you about her break-up with Tenzin, huh?” Mako nodded. “Look, I’m sure you’re on her good side, so relax…besides, from what Tenzin told me she only damaged half the Air Temple.”
Mako found himself doing a double-take over Korra’s words, before turning back to his younger brother, who was still in mid-speech. “And that’s why you should always remember to tip the food guy…never thought food could go that bad that quick. Also—!”
“Hey, Bolin!” His brother called down. “Great speech, but we’ll be here all night if you don’t get to the movie!”
“Oh, right! Well, here it is, without further ado…The Adventures of Nuktuk: The Hero of the South!”
With that announcement made, Bolin signaled the projectionist to role the film before dashing from the field down the bridge. As he neared the end however, he saw it wouldn’t be a quick trip to reach the VIP Box Seats where his friends were seated.
“Uh, just give me a couple minutes…kind of a long trip.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Using her Waterbending, Korra summoned a geyser of water that lifted up Bolin and deposited him into the Box, right beside his friends. “Sweet…though I am a kinda soaked now.”
“Also, not a problem.” Korra said, summoning a quick gust of wind which promptly dried most of Bolin’s attire.
“OK, now you’re just showing off.” Bolin commented with a grin, before taking his seat. A moment later, a black-and-white image of Bolin appeared on the screen with Ginger holding on as they both rode Naga.
“Who’s gonna fight for Friends and Freedom? Nuktuk!
He’s the Biggest, Baddest, Bending-est man I knooooow!”
Almost immediately upon seeing the opening scenes, Korra had to stifle her laughter; which drew the attention of her friends. “I’m sorry; I just…never really noticed the outfit you wore for this mover.”
“What’s wrong with it?” Bolin asked. “Varrick told me it was authentic Water Tribe Warrior apparel.”
“Bolin, my father was a warrior, and he never wore anything close to this.” Korra told him, before recalling something. “Although I do remember Katara telling me about her brother wearing something similar…but it wasn’t for fighting.”
“Just remember to ask for a different look if you’re gonna do another one.” Mako suggested.
“I don’t know…it kind of works for him.” Asami commented.
Hearing that, Korra took another look at her friend’s “revealing” outfit, and noticed that Bolin had a more muscular figure than she would’ve guessed. Even being teammates with him on the Pro-Bending circuit she had rarely seen him anything but fully dressed, but here she saw more of the Earthbender than she expected…and enjoyed the view.
“When Unalaq starts trouble, he’ll punch him in the mouth! He’s Nuktuk: The Hero of the Sooooouth!”
“That reminds me…” Asami noted. “…where is Ginger?”
“Off at a photo shoot.” Bolin replied.
“Didn’t she just come back from one?” Mako asked.
“She’s…been doing that a lot.”
“Wait, you mean the redhead?” Korra asked, to which Bolin nodded. “No offense Bolin, but you’re better off without her.”
“Yeah, I get the feeling she’s just with you for the exposure.” Asami agreed.
“Yeah…maybe you’re right.” Bolin agreed, before noticing several empty buckets. “Oh man, looks like it’s time for a popcorn run.”
“But the movie just started.” Korra said.
“Don’t worry about it.” Bolin told her as he got up. “I mean, I do know everything that happened already. And that reminds me, Asami, no spoiling!”
He rushed out of the VIP Box as the Company Head slumped down in her seat, folding her arms. “I didn’t tell Lin that much about the movie…”
With a hurried pace Bolin scrambled down the steps from the VIP Balcony to the ground level, and rushed through the hallway until he entered the lobby area, which housed concessions. Making his way to the large popcorn popper, he grabbed three rather large tubs and placed them on the glass counter beside him. In the distance, Bolin can hear whistling coming from the screen, indicating which part of the movie his friends were watching.
“Sweet, just about to get to the good parts.” He told himself.
He quickly but cautiously filled all three tubs to the brim with popcorn, before stacking one on top of another, making them easier to carry as he prepared to venture back to his seat. “You know, I kinda wish they served Flamey-Os here, or some Varri-cake. I could really go for that—OOMPH!!!”
A shot to the gut ended is self-conversation preemptively, one powerful enough to left the Earthbender off of his feet and propel him backwards. Bolin could only see popcorn flying through the air along with him as he rocketed backwards, only coming to a stop when he crumpled the wooden door of a closet. Dazed, but still conscious, it took him a moment to gather himself and his bearings. Looking up, he saw several men decked out in black slowly rounding the corner to surround him. Bolin then noticed his stomach was wet, indicating his approaching attackers were Waterbenders.
“Uh, maybe you haven’t heard, but the war was called off by the Avatar…who’s upstairs right now!” Bolin told them. “So, everything’s supposed to be peaceful now, right?”
They didn’t answer; instead they readied themselves for another attack.
“This is gonna get brutal, isn’t it?” He said, before noticing the red carpet had been removed from the floor of the lobby.
Using that to his advantage, he plowed his two fists into the ground, causing two pillars of earth to rise up and pin two of his attackers to the ceiling. Using it as a distraction, he jumps to his feet and charges for an attack. One of his attackers sees it though, and uses his Waterbending to create a puddle of ice. Bolin is too late to avoid it, as he loses his footing, allowing another attacker to spin kick him into the glass counter, sending shards scattering across the floor. Bolin had no chance to breathe as they pulled him from the counter and delivered two more blows to his gut. Growing angry, the Earthbender went on the offensive, breaking free of their grip. He then used his Earthbending to launch one of his attackers forward, sending him viciously crashing through an adjacent glass counter. The upper hand wouldn’t remain however, as another spin kick pushed him backwards, almost sending him back-first into a marble pillar. The enemy Waterbender pressed the attack, but Bolin recovered and defended himself, blocking his strikes until he saw an opening. And with a strong straight punch he launched his foe several feet away, sending him to the ground holding his chest. A moment later though, Bolin would be swarmed by the two Waterbenders he pinned before, now freed. He deflected their attacks, defending himself until he was able to create some space with his Earthbending by sliding back.
He gazed into the eyes of his attackers, all four of them realizing his true potential. They reached for the pouches on their belts, unscrewing the lids and allowing them access to even more water. Bolin responded by removing his shirt, revealing a tank top underneath, before tossing it to the side. He had more freedom for arm movement, which he knew he’d need.
“You know, this is the second time you guys interrupted my movie.” He noted. “What are you, critics or something?”
Again, they didn’t answer, instead initiating the attack as before. Wisps of water whipped around the Earthbender’s head, sending him reeling as he barely avoided the attacks. The 4 circled around him, encompassing him as they continued their attack. Noticing he was stationary, Bolin decided to use it to his advantage. Stomping both feet on the ground, he began to stealthily spin a ground disc under him while still avoiding their attacks. Working up enough speed, he finally unleashed an attack that sent two of his foes flying across the lobby, and through the glass door entrance. Unfortunately just as soon as they were taken out, 4 more attackers flooded into the building, lowering Bolin’s odds of victory.
“Not good. Not good!” He said, backing up. “KORRA! MAKO! ASAM—!”
A blast of ice cut off his shouts for backup as even more enemies entered the fray. They got him down to one knee as their attacks remained relentless, with even knees being thrown to down the Earthbender. But Bolin would power on as spotted another coming with a flying kick, and grabbed him out of the air by the leg. He then used the momentum to swing around and launch the hapless victim into 3 of his friends, taking out all 4. An attacker responded with another blast of ice, aimed at Bolin’s shoulder.
“AAGHH!!!”
He staggered, but remained on his feet as the onslaught continued. But the numbers continually stacked against the Mover Star, and his chances of survival dwindled. Meanwhile the sounds of the battle began to penetrate the main arena, as Asami became distracted from the mover by them.
“Did you hear that?” She said.
“No, but that scene with Naga high-fiving Bolin was priceless.” Korra commented.
“Wait…I think I hear it, too.” Mako chimed in.
A moment later, a loud explosion like sound echoed through the arena, drawing their attention down to the playing field, where they saw two bodies roll to a stop in the center. One of them part of the mysterious attackers, the other…
“BOLIN!!!”
No time was wasted as both Mako and Korra leapt from the balcony to join the fray and save their friend. Mako fired up a jolt of lightning and unleashed it at the attacking crowd, sending several of them flying to the water below. Korra hit the ground first, and put up an Ice barrier with the water from below to shield them temporarily as they checked on Bolin.
“What happened? What’s going on!?” Korra asked.
“I…think they don’t like my mover.” Bolin responded, wearily but wittingly.
“Not the time for jokes, bro!” Mako reminded him as Korra called up to their friend.
“Asami, we—!”
“On it, calling Lin now.”
Just then, the arctic barrier Korra placed up was shattered by their attackers, which now numbered in the dozens. Seeing this, Korra slowly stood up and faced them as they prepared yet another attack. “You guys obviously don’t know who you’re dealing with, so I’ll make this quick. I’m the Avatar and you hurt my friend. If you surrender and tell me why you did it, I’ll go easy on you.”
There was a pause as the mysterious benders exchanged looks, half of them recognizing that it was indeed the Avatar addressing them. They would not give in however, and as they stormed forward, a frightening glow appeared in Korra’s eyes.
“So be it.”
Reaching her Avatar State, she used her Waterbending to lift up the gallons of water around the playing area before bringing it down upon her aggressors’ heads. She then clenched her fists, turning the water to ice and effectively locking them in. She then walked over to the large makeshift boulder and grabbed one of her captives by his neck, leaning in close.
“Why did you attack my friend!?” She demanded.
The captive was defiant and remained silent, but showed fear in his eyes as Korra raised her fist, ready to strike.
“Korra!”
Hearing Mako’s voice, she looked back to see him helping up his little brother, and understood. Their foes had been stopped and now their attention needed to be with Bolin. Rushing over, she helped Mako bring the Earthbender to his feet, just as the glimmer of flashing lights could be seen coming from the lobby. Help had arrived…
“Stop squirming, Bolin.”
Korra told that to her friend as she summoned an orb of water from a nearby bucket and formed it into a dome. The dome was then infused with energy as she began her healing technique on his shoulder. “Sorry, kinda hard to stay still when all you feel is searing pa—oh…OK that kinda feels better.”
“Told ya.” Korra replied.
Bolin took a deep breath and closed his eyes as he sat on the couch in his apartment. Korra continued to work on his shoulder as both Asami and Mako paced around frantically in front of them; the latter growing impatient with the practice.
“I’m getting out of her.” Mako said. “I’m getting on the streets and finding out who’s responsible for this!”
“Yeah!” Bolin agreed. “We should be out there—OOMPH!!!”
“Sit down!” Korra said, shoving him back onto the couch before continuing her healing. “You’ve done more than enough fighting today.”
“Mako, we know how you feel, but you have to calm down.” Asami told him. “You can’t go off wanting to burn half the criminals in the city over this.”
“And why not!?” Mako responded.
“Because it’s an order.”
All eyes turned towards the front door, as Police Chief Lin Bei Fong appeared in the doorway. “I don’t need my newest detective pulling stunts that my mother is known for.”
“But Chief—!”
“I know what happened here, and I’m angry over your brother’s attack as well. But we do this by the book!” She said sternly as they were joined by three others; Tenzin, Kya and Bumi.
“Korra! Bolin! I came as soon as I heard.” He said.
“OK, does everyone know that I got my butt kicked earlier tonight?” Bolin groaned.
“If it helps you feel any better, I could tell your stories of how Bumi tried to wrestle a group of Badgermoles and got himself buried.” Kya suggested.
“I still could’ve taken them.” Bumi argued.
Kya giggled to herself a little, before noticing Bolin still wincing in pain. “Let me take over, Korra. There might be some deep tissue damage.”
“But…Katara taught me the same lessons she taught you.” Korra debated.
“Yes, but I’ve also traveled the World advancing my Healing technique.” She revealed. “Not to discredit my mother, but I know a few techniques she doesn’t.”
Korra relented and allowed Kya to take over. She opened the pouch on her hip and drew out some spirit water, forming it into a ring and spinning it around Bolin’s shoulder.
“Did you find out anything, Chief Bei Fong?” Korra asked.
“Well the men who attacked you are as tight-lipped as I’ve seen.” Lin noted. “After some intensive interrogation though, I was able to get a few names out of one of them. Lu and Gang are already investigating…”
“Lu and Gang? Those two!?” Mako protested. “Ma’am, with all due respect—!”
“No you may not join them!” Bei Fong answered bluntly before the question could be completed. “Since you’re close to the case I need you close to me for further interrogations. With the amount of suspects Korra detained this will be an all-nighter.”
Mako took a look at his little brother, who still was being treated for his shoulder, and still had his face adorned with scrapes, cuts and traces of blood. “Good, I don’t think I could get any sleep tonight, anyway.”
“Good, let’s get started.” Bei Fong agreed.
“Mind if I tag along?” Bumi suggested with a sly grin. “We could…trade law enforcement tips.”
Lin didn’t respond verbally to Bumi’s suggestion, instead she simply glared at him for a moment, before walking out of the apartment with Mako in tow. The look didn’t deter Aang’s eldest child, however. “The Bumi Magic…gets ‘em every time.”
Confidently he followed the Chief out of the apartment, leaving his siblings Tenzin and Kya behind; the former shaking his head in his hand. “Please tell me my older brother didn’t just hit on my ex-girlfriend…”
“The coming of a new age, indeed…” Kya commented with a giggle as she ceased her healing. “…I think you should be good to go after a good night’s rest, Bolin. Your injuries should heal up just find.”
“In that case, I’ll go join Mako and—!”
“Actually, I think you should stay here, Korra.” Kya suggested.
“I agree.” Tenzin chimed in. “If this truly is a plot to come after Bolin because of his Mover, he could have no better protection than the Avatar.”
“Plus, Bolin’s had that shoulder injured before, so it could pop up again, meaning more healing needed.” Kya added. “Besides, I imagine it wouldn’t be so bad for you to hang around a buff young man like that though, would it?”
Korra’s face slightly turned red before she answered. “OH, no! I mean, we’re just friends and I just…wait, how do you know about Bolin being buff?”
“Where do you think his Nuktuk movie debuted next?” Kya asked as she made her way out the door, Tenzin and Asami following behind. As the door shut closed Korra found herself alone with the Earthbender.
“Bolin, I’m so sorr—!”
“Korra, if you apologize again, I’m gonna move to the Spirit World.” He said, cutting her off. “It’s OK.”
“No it’s not.” She argued. “I know those guys attacked you as a way of getting to me. The whole Civil War and angry Spirits…I should be out there with Lin and Mako, MAKING them tell me what they know.”
“OR…they might just not be fans of movers.” Bolin suggested.
The joke caused Korra to crack a smile briefly, before frowning again. “Mako’s right, you do joke around a lot.”
“Hey, force of habit.” Bolin responded. “I mean, look where I came from…I lost my parents, had to grow up on the streets and do odd jobs for gangs just to make it by. Some people would say it’s a hard life, but I’m just thankful I made it through. And now look at me, a famous Pro-Bender and Mover Star who survived an Anti-Bender uprising, a crazy princess and an Evil Spirit bent on World Domination!”
It took a moment for Bolin to realize all that he said. “Oh, uh, sorry about calling your cousin crazy.”
“Don’t sweat it.” Korra told him. “Desna & Eska can be out there. And I’m thinking I understand a little more.”
“SO…it’ll be a while until the Flamey-O noodles I ordered get here, and the Landlord made me get rid of my hot tub, so what do you say we pass the time with a little contest.” He offered, putting his left elbow on the table and holding his hand up.
“Arm wrestling?” Korra replied. “You do remember you have a sore shoulder, right?”
“Left one’s feeling fine.” He said with a sly grin. “Or maybe the mighty Avatar’s too afraid to take on a simple Earthbender…”
Hearing those words, Korra’s rationality took a seat as her competitive side took over. She quickly kneeled down across from Bolin at the table and gripped her left arm with his, placing her elbow down. “Let’s go, Nuktuk.”
“Remember, no Avatar State.” Bolin reminded her.
“You sound just like Ikki.” Korra told him.
They glared at each other with confident grins, tightening the grip they had in each other’s hands, ready to give it their all.
“GO!!!”
And the competition was on. Both of their arm muscles flexed as they poured on the strength, trying to take each other down. Even with an injured shoulder, Bolin’s left arm was working just as strong as ever, giving Korra all she can handle. But her natural strength was more than a match for the Earthbender as both were stuck at a stalemate.
“Can’t…take it…Bo?” Korra asked.
“That all…you got?” Bolin replied.
The Mover Star remained focused, trying his best to take down the arm of the mighty Avatar for victory. Unfortunately, his eyes would waver and fall on the mighty bosom of the Avatar. It was clear that Korra was struggling to take him down, but as her body trembled, so did her girls. In a way that was almost hypnotic to the Earthbender. He could even make out a few beads of sweat rolling down their slope, which was more than enough to break his concentration…
“Yes!”
…and cost him the match.
“Ha! The mighty Avatar remains undefeated!” Korra proclaimed, jumping up and raising her arm in victory.
“Hey, wait! I wanna rematch!” Bolin objected. “I was distracted.”
“Yeah, right.” Korra responded. “We’re in your apartment, what could distract you?”
Bolin was about to answer, but after a moment of thought deemed it best not to reveal. “Never mind, I still wanna rematch! I know I can beat—AGH!!!”
The twinge of pain in his left shoulder was a reminder of his condition as Bolin fell back onto the couch, with Korra coming to his side. “I knew this was a bad idea. Kya was right for me to stay here.”
“Ahh…I’m OK…I’m…OK…”
And in that moment, their eyes met. Not another word was uttered between them as they found themselves unable to look away. The emotion in the room was still high, and in a way unknown to the two of them, a connection was made. One strong enough to drift them closer together, until their lips met. It was a small peck on the lips at first, but it grew to a deep, passionate make out that caused Korra’s hands to wrap around Bolin, and his uninjured arm around her. But it was short-lived as the two realized what was happening and quickly broke away, Korra turning towards the window in disbelief.
“Did…did we just…?” Korra stumbled.
“I think we did.” Bolin replied.
“This…can’t happen.”
“Of course it can’t.”
“I mean, I just broke up with your brother.”
“And I just broke up with your cousin.”
“This would not work.”
“Not at all!”
“Besides, we were just caught in the moment.”
“Completely.”
“And the moment’s passed, now.”
“FAR gone!”
But as much as they tried to talk themselves away from it, the moment had not passed. And a quick glimpse at each other brought out their passion again. Bolin hopped to his feet as Korra ran over to kiss him again. The impact caused them to stumble over to the counter near the stove, where Korra wrapped her leg around Bolin, holding him tight. Their tongues became intertwined between both of their mouths, as they only exchanged pants and moans. Their intense make out would be interrupted however; as three knocks would cause them to break away and turn towards the door; and in horror, see it was already open.
