Chapter 68
Lady Sakura sat at the breakfast nook and placed her hand over her heart. Unlike Ozai’s daughter, the little girl Ursa, was just adorable. Her heart melted the moment she reached for her. The Fire Lord said she would never carry his child, but she was certain she knew enough tricks that she could convince him to allow her to adopt. Katara had told her about a few things she had heard a few of her older tribeswomen mention and if necessary she was willing to resort to barbarian tactics.
A little blind girl would be perfect as she wouldn’t protest like her nieces did when she wanted to dress her up. She would spoil her. She and her grandfather wouldn’t want for a thing and she didn’t have to worry about what would happen to her after he died.
Lady Ten had an illegitimate son close to her age that she was disguising as the illegitimate child of her deceased brother. He was a kind boy and she was sure Lady Ten would consent to a marriage arrangement between them as it would secure his place in their world.
Now that she had planned her future daughter’s life Lady Sakura left her sister’s home and made her way to the playhouse. All of the country’s aspiring playwrights flocked to Ember Island hoping to join their famed troupe. It made sense to go there and complete the assignment Fire Lord Ozai had tasked her with rather than travel the countryside looking for a writer who met his requirements.
She needed to find a young woman with a romantic heart and a flair for the dramatic capable of penning a story to match the lovely pictures of Prince Zuko and Lady Katara that artist Yuliang had drawn. The ones of them at the portrait sitting had been rather endearing and Sakura once again found herself jealous of the young girl. Ozai had never looked upon her with such tenderness as Zuko did Katara during their portrait sitting. Or with the lust she’d seen in the Prince’s eyes as he cupped Katara’s bottom while her hand snuck beneath his tunic as they rode in the royal processional.
It had really been quite a scandalous drawing but it delighted Ozai to no end. He insisted he needed a writer who could vividly describe that aspect of their relationship as well.
Sei crawled about the alley behind the Ember Island playhouse; large tears falling from her eyes as she picked up the pages of her manuscript. Both the director and head playwright called her work unbelievable. A work of complete and utter fantasy not fit to line the bathroom walls of a cheap whorehouse.
“As if the great romance of an aged and crippled war veteran raising his blind love child was unbelievable. Why couldn’t such a man fall in love with the young beautiful servant girl he’d rescued from a cruel master who had cut off her tongue? Why couldn’t she die in childbirth while being pursued by her former employer?” the authoress sobbed.
“My play was no less believable that pitiful play they’d selected - The Boy in the Iceberg, the name was even boring. Who cares if it was ghost written by Jee, if that is his real name, the supposed captain aboard the banished prince’s ship or that he allegedly kept in touch with the disgraced General Iroh who kept him abreast of the Avatar and the Prince Zuko’s travels,” she cried picking up one ripped pages of her thirty-seven page love scene.
“There was no way valiant and handsome Prince Zuko would surrender to the charms of the Avatar’s curvaceous exotic Waterbender and fall into her deceitful clutches while he was engaged to the exquisite and slender classical Fire Nation beauty Lady Mai,” she wailed unmindful of the dainty hand lifting one of the ripped pages that had been picked up by the wind.
She sighed in exquisite bliss, trembling in a mix of fear and anticipation as his throbbing manhood tenderly parted the delicate fleshy folds of her quivering womanhood. Even though Woo Shi wanted nothing more than to pound her with his large burgeoning manflesh, he knew that his precious beloved was skittish. The cruel beast he freed her from had often abused her fragile ladyhood while she was a servant in his home… Lady Sakura smiled. This was the woman.
“Excuse me, but are you the author of this fine literature?” Lady Sakura said kindly handing the young girl a handkerchief.
“Yes, milady, I aammm,” the girl cried blowing her nose rather loudly.
“Why are you weeping?” Lady Sakura asked
“They said my play is gaarrrrbbaaage,” Sei cried clutching her precious pages to her chest.
Lady Sakura placed a hand on the playwright’s shoulder, “Nonsense child. My name is Lady Sakura and I am a patron of the fine arts. I have been tasked by Fire Lord Ozai himself to find an authoress with a talent such as yours. Would you be willing to bring your manuscript to the palace for the Fire Lord’s review?”
Sei’s eyes widened, “Are you serious, Milady? This isn’t a joke is it? Surely the spirits would not be so cruel as to dangle destiny in front of my face and strip it away twice in one day?”
“Oh my dear, you are perfect!” Lady Sakura exclaimed. “Here is my card, go home and compose yourself. Then meet me at the Golden Sun restaurant at 7:00 pm for dinner. As you so quaintly put it, ‘the Avatar’s curvaceous exotic Waterbender’ has fallen for the charms of our ‘valiant and handsome Prince Zuko’ and is now his concubine.”
“Nooo,” Sei gasped, “But what of the beautiful Lady Mai? Surely she does not approve of his dalliance. What about our firm and benevolent Fire Lord? How must he feel knowing that his son is treading the path of his misguided ancestors and seeking the company of a water barbarian? Are the rumors true that Prince Zuko never succeeded in capturing the dastardly Avatar because he was relentlessly pursuing her?”
“If you agree to come to the palace you will be able to read what happened in their own words. That dry tale is fine for historical purposes, but Fire Lord Ozai wanted to commission someone able to communicate their story to the masses. Gather your manuscript, go get cleaned up and have dinner with me. I do not think you will be disappointed,” Lady Sakura instructed.
Lady Sakura smiled in contentment as she watched the girl hastily gathered the rest of her pages and bow before running down the street. Today had been absolutely perfect. She’d found the perfect child and the perfect person to write “The Forbidden Love of Fire Nation Prince Zuko and the Avatar’s Waterbending Master Katara.” Ozai would be so pleased with her.
Now if she were to only find General Iroh and the Avatar’s Earthbender he wouldn’t be able to deny her the adoption.
