Kim got out of bed just a few minutes after seven, despite having been up ‘til nearly dawn. Even if she hadn’t been purposefully trying to stay awake for as long as she could last night, she probably wouldn’t have slept much anyway; she was like a little kid at Christmas, nervous excitement giving her even more energy than usual.
It had taken a considerable effort to convince her parents to let her go to Europe for the summer, but after nearly four hours carefully and calmly discussing everything, listing all the pros that outweighed the cons (at least in her opinion), elaborately expressing her desire to go, leveraging the exemplary improvement of her grades in school, and even using Ron’s own good luck with his opportunity in Paris as both another reason she should be allowed to go and leverage via guilt that without him around, what else was she going to do, she’d managed to slowly shift them over to agreement. The irony that she’d used a considerable amount of what Corscan had taught her about negotiation and diplomacy in order to do it was not lost on her either.
Once she’d gotten home, she’d called Shego as soon as she had the chance, and been rewarded with an unexpected and slightly unsettling near squeal of delight from the woman—despite the incongruity, the memory still brought a smile to Kim’s lips as she headed for her bathroom to shower. The only snags had come with the when and how of it Shego wanted…
“I can’t leave tomorrow!”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know… I just can’t! It’s too soon… ”
“How is it too soon? It’s been a week and a half since I asked you, you just spent a whole week with your entire family, and if you want to keep up the ‘pretext’, well, you’re already over a week behind by the Middleton school district’s summer vacation schedule, and over three by most of the other ones.”
“And why exactly is it you know when summer vacations start for the whole country?”
“Maybe because the person who usually puts me in jail still goes to high school? Knowing when you have even more free time than usual is kind of a necessity there Princess.”
Kim snorted, and then sighed a moment later.
“All right, fine, I guess I can leave sometime tomorrow—but not until the afternoon; I don’t want to have to rush that much and I’ll need time to say goodbye to my friends and family.”
“Ok, I’ll pick you up around one o’clock; how’s that?”
“Sounds good—wait, pick me up? And how exactly are you planning on doing that?”
“From what I remember, the street in front of your house is wide enough that I can set my hover-jet down there no problem. At least, so long as no one’s parked on either side of it anyway… ”
“Shego… you can’t pick me up in your jet!”
“Why not?”
“Aside from flying off in a sixty-foot long black-and-green billboard that says I’m with you? Ohhhh I don’t know… how ‘bout because most ‘cultural studies programs’ don’t have billion dollar supersonic hover-jets at their disposal. That work for you?”
Shego’s amused snort came in crystal clear over Kim’s phone.
“First of all, that ‘sixty-foot billboard’ can be yellow and blue with pink polka dots if I want it to be, thanks to the chamelite skin, and second, what? So you’re getting a ride from a friend; like you haven’t done that a few hundred times before… ”
Kim sighed again, neatly caught once more.
“Ok, ok… but it’s not like I knew that. All right, fine, I guess that’s ok, just so long as you stay out of sight… ”
“Noooo, really? And here I was planning on meeting you at the door and giving you a great big hug before waving to your family.”
“Not exactly helping your case there Shego.” Kim’s singsong tone carried her exasperation clearly.
“Then stop treating me like your id—” Shego cut off suddenly, and a moment later Kim thought she heard a deep breath being drawn, but she couldn’t be sure. When Shego spoke again her voice was calmer and more controlled. “Stop treating me like I don’t know what I’m doing, all right? I get enough crap like that dumped on me by Drakken, I don’t need it from you too.”
Kim sighed, a sudden stab of guilt shooting through her.
“Sorry Shego. I shouldn’t have said that.”
There was a quick sigh on the other end and Shego responded; “Yeah, well… I’m a little nervous too I suppose. Look, I’ve got a lot of things I need to get done before we leave, so I’ll see you tomorrow, all right Pumpkin?”
“Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
“Oh, and one last thing!”
Kim paused at the sudden exclamation. “Yeah, what is it?”
“If you can manage it, don’t go to sleep tonight.”
“What? Why not?”
“One o’clock in the afternoon your time is nine o’clock at night in Italy. You do the math… ”
“Oh… well, I think I can manage. Thanks Shego. See you later.”
“Later Kimmie.”
After that, Kim had told her parents she was leaving the next day, garnering a little reluctance from them, but mostly acceptance—in her father’s words; “Well, I wish we had some more warning, but if you’re going to go I guess there’s no time like the present…” From there she’d spent the rest of the night getting ready to leave—and for the umpteenth time, hesitating over the entire idea of seeing Shego at all, once more running through all the arguments and emotional conflicts even as she was packing, and once more reaching the same muddled decision to keep going even though it made no logical sense.
Kim pushed those resurfacing doubts out of her head as she stepped out of the shower and started drying off. She didn’t want to start up that pointless exercise again; she was going to see it through and that was that—wasn’t it? Of course it was.
Returning to her room once she was finished drying off, Kim got dressed in the casual yet stylish outfit she’d picked out last night; her black bellbottoms, airy, long-sleeved tan tunic, gold pendant, and a pair of sturdy open-toed flats. Then she turned and, with a sigh, started lugging the five big suitcases she’d filled with everything she’d need while she was away downstairs one by one, lining them up next to the front door in the main hall. Once she was done, Kim went into the kitchen and turned on the coffeemaker for her parents before starting to make breakfast for herself. Before she’d really gotten underway, a clamorous, staccato thumping of bare feet pounding on stairs heralded the arrival of the twins a few moments later.
“Hey guys, you want some breakfast?”
Kim’s uncharacteristic cheer stopped the twins in their tracks. Slowly both their heads swiveled to stare at their sister warily. “Why are you offering us breakfast?” They asked in cautious, perfect harmony.
“What? I’m not allowed to get you breakfast now?” Kim grinned in amusement.
“No…” Jim said before Tim concluded in a sly, suspicious tone; “You’re up to something.”
Kim shook her head, still grinning—though wryly now. “No, I’m not…” Kim trailed off for a moment, sobering somewhat as she started putting bowls on the table for the twins. “Well, not exactly. You guys remember what I worked out with mom and dad in the car yesterday?”
“You mean how you’re going to be spending the summer in Italy?” Jim said as he climbed up into his chair, while Tim did the same next to him, adding; “You know how lucky that is, right? Usually you have to graduate high school before you get to go to Europe, not just do well that year.”
“Yeah I know.” Kim returned in a good-natured grumble, heading for the cereal cabinet.
“So what about it?” Jim asked, and Tim added; “Yeah, what do you want to make sure we don’t go in your room while you’re gone or something?”
“No—though I don’t want you tweebs going into my room while I’m gone.” This time Kim’s growl was anything but good-natured. After grabbing a box of cereal that was mostly sugar and chocolate held together by as little fiber as possible, she continued in a calmer tone; “No, it’s that I’m going to be leaving sooner than I thought… this afternoon actually.”
“Really? That’s great!” Tim grinned broadly as Kim headed back to the table. Jim eagerly followed up with; “Do you need any help packing? Wouldn’t want you to miss your flight!”
“Gee, don’t get all choked up about me being gone or anything.” Kim’s tone was bone dry as she plunked the cereal box down on the table and turned toward the fridge.
“Well it’s not like we haven’t seen you lately or anything.” Jim grumbled as he started pouring a heaping mound of cereal into his bowl. Tim continued; “Yeah, we just spent a whole week straight with you around; there’s only so much we can take!” As he took the cereal box from Jim and started filling his own bowl, he continued in a lower tone; “I mean, maybe in a few weeks or something…”
Kim paused in the act of opening the fridge door, looking over her shoulder as she asked; “What was that?”
“Nothing!” the twins chimed in stereo.
Kim hid her smile by returning her attention to the fridge, getting the milk and orange juice. By the time she turned around and headed for the table, she’d schooled her face to a carefully neutral expression.
“You monkeys want toast with that?” Kim set the two pitchers she was carrying down in the center of the table as she asked the question.
“Yes.” was Jim’s answer; “No.” was Tim’s, then they both harmonized; “And we’re not monkeys!”
“Suuuure you aren’t…” Kim murmured to herself, smirking as she turned to get a pair of glasses for the twins before putting some toast on for Jim. By the time the toast was done, so was the coffee Kim had put on earlier, which was convenient, given that Ann was just walking into the kitchen with James right behind her, both Possible parents still in their housecoats and pajamas in their usual display of weekend morning leisure.
“Goooood morning everyone.” James spoke with a cheerful tone and grin. “Mmmm, is that coffee I smell brewing?”
“Yeah dad, it just got finished a minute ago.” Kim responded while setting Jim’s toast and a bottle of strawberry jam down in front of him.
Ann paused a few steps into the kitchen, taking in the scene before her with a growing smile, while James navigated around her, making a beeline for the coffeemaker.
“And what’s going on here?” Ann cocked her head slightly as she smiled warmly at her children.
“Nothing!” the twins responded loudly, almost drowning out Kim’s “Just feeding the monkeys mom.” eliciting a harmonized follow-up bellow of “We’re! Not! Monkeys!” from Jim and Tim.
Kim just smirked while Ann affectionately chided; “Don’t tease your brothers Kimmie.”
For the next forty minutes or so, Kim had a nice, long, leisurely Saturday morning family breakfast with her parents and brothers, but eventually it came to an end.
“Well, I still have a pile of stuff I need do…” Kim stood up from the table reluctantly. “I’ll be back in time for lunch though; see you then.”
“Ok honey.” Ann smiled softly while at the same time James replied; “See you later Kimmie-cub.”
Leaving the kitchen, Kim went up to her room and got her cell phone and Kimmunicator. After that, she called Wade first, only to be stymied when, after nearly two minutes, he still hadn’t answered her.
“Maybe he’s sleeping in late…” Kim murmured to herself as she broke off the attempt. “I’ll try again later.”
Switching over to her cell phone, Kim called Monique while checking to make sure the door to her room was shut securely.
“Hey girlfrien’, what’s up? You back all right I assume?”
“Yeah, got back last night Mo.” Kim responded with a grin. “Look, are you working today?”
“Ummm, yeeeeah,” Monique’s tone was hesitantly curious, “but I don’t go in ‘til one. Why, what’s going on?”
Kim paused for a second, taking a breath, and then answered; “Well, I decided to do it Mo. I’m going to move in with Shego and see how it goes, see if we can make a go of it or not, even if it is kinda risky.”
“No way! Get out! Really?” Monique all but squealed in gleeful disbelief. “Well I gotta say, honestly didn’t think you had it in you Kim, even with your… ah-hem, recently expanded horizons, shall we say?” Kim could tell Monique was grinning wryly even though she couldn’t see her. “Way schway girl, way schway.”
Kim’s brow furrowed. “Way schway?” She questioned dryly before giving her head a shake, half-growling; “And why exactly didn’t you think I’d do it?”
“C’mon Kim, you’ve always been a little on the… reserved, side, when it comes to relationships, an’ this ain’t no one night stand or fun time roll in the hay and you know it. You coming to a decision so fast, and makin’ the one you did, well… can’t say I saw it comin’. But it’s a good sign girl; means you’ve got your head on the right track to make it work if y’can.”
Kim’s expression softened and she smiled. “Thanks Monique.” A few moments later, in a puzzled, curious tone, Monique asked; “Just one thing Kim… what does this have to do with me going to work today?”
“Oh! Yeah, ummm, the thing is, I’m leaving this afternoon.” The last part came out in somewhat of a rush. “I talked my parents into it yesterday on the long ride home, and then when I called Shego she wanted to get started right away, so, she’s picking me up this afternoon in her hover-jet. I’m leaving right after lunch.”
“Say what? You mean you’re leaving before we even get a chance to have some face time? Well that sucks outright!”
“Well, yes and no. I’m all ready to go; I got everything done last night since I had to stay up late—”
“Ummm, why’d you have to stay up late?” Monique cut Kim off with the question.
“Time difference; gotta be able to get to sleep tonight, which will only be in about eight hours or so. Now can I finish?” Kim waited for a quick three-count before continuing. “As I was trying to say, I’m meeting Ron at Bueno Nacho in a little while to hang out for a couple of hours before we head home for lunch with the family, and I want you to come too. I can be around to pick you up in about a half-hour if that’s ok.”
“Hell yeah that’s ok! I’ll be ready and waiting girlfriend, you can count on it!”
“Ok then, I’ll see you soon Mo.” Kim said before hanging up and heading for the door, putting both her phone and Kimmunicator away in her pants pockets as she went. Passing the living room on her way to the front door, Kim loudly announced; “I’m heading out to get Ron and Monique; we’ll be back in a couple of hours or so!”
“Ok Kimmie.” came James’ response, while Ann said; “Have fun dear.”
Before taking her mom’s minivan, Kim made sure her motorcycle was tucked away in a corner of the garage as close to the wall as she could get it, where it would be out of the way while she was gone. Throwing a tarp over the bulky machine, Kim covered it up neatly and then got into the minivan, pulling out of the garage and onto the street, heading directly for Monique’s.
Once she collected Monique, Kim headed straight for Bueno Nacho, though at a sedate pace as her friend tried to cram in as much talk about moving in with Shego as she could during the short trip. Arriving at the restaurant, the pair entered to find Ron nowhere in sight—though admittedly, Kim was a little early. After getting a light snack and sitting down at a booth with a good view of the front door, the pair continued their conversation until Ron showed up about ten minutes later, grinning and waving to them as he enter the restaurant.
Grabbing a small order for himself, Ron slid into the booth with the girls a few minutes later, while Rufus emerged from his owner’s pants pocket to hop up onto the table, appropriating the occasional scrap of food from everyone’s trays while following the conversation with a bucktoothed grin and bright ebony eyes.
With Ron’s arrival, that conversation shifted to general talk about Europe and the opportunities there—including Ron’s own good fortune, which took Monique by complete surprise, given it was the first she’d heard about it.
“So Kim’s going to Italy, and you’re going to Paris France? For the whole summer?” Monique’s tone was dry envious disbelief.
“You got it!” Ron grinned, while Rufus nodded vigorously, adding “Un-hunh, un-hunh!” The blonde teen continued on; “We’ll only be a few thousand miles apart, with no ocean between us!”
“Hundreds Ron; we’ll only be a few hundred miles apart.” Kim said dryly, before pausing, a faint look of concentration on her face. “Actually, it’s not ‘a few’ hundred, it’s more like eight hundred or so. But still less than a thousand.”
“Whatever,” Ron casually dismissed, “the point is we won’t be on two separate continents. Heck if it’s only eight hundred miles we should even be able to get together a few times outside of missions; that’s only like, what? Ten, twelve hours driving with those crazy European speed limits?”
Kim grinned. “We’ll see what we can do once we figure out our schedules, ok?”
The conversation continued for well over an hour before Kim found herself in the bathroom along with Monique.
“So you gonna tell him now?” the dark-skinned girl asked as she washed her hands, looking at Kim in the mirror.
“Tell him what?” Kim counter-queried, honestly confused.
“You know; that the real reason you’re going over to Italy is because you’re shacking up with…” Monique glanced at the door and then ended her question with a nasal hum that sounded somewhat like Shego’s name.
“Oh! No, not yet.” Kim sighed. “I mean, it’s just going to be so hard, and I know there’s no way he’ll be able to understand it—hell I barely understand it!”
“Well it ain’t gonna get any easier the longer you wait either.” Monique’s voice was dryly rebuking.
“I know, I know…” Kim sighed again. “Look, I just want to make sure this is going somewhere before I tell him, ok? I mean, if it doesn’t work out there’ll be no reason to say anything, right? I can just pretend it never happened. It’s not like Shego’s going to say anything to anyone…”
“Mmmmhmmm… you just keep tellin’ yourself that girl.” Monique’s response was even dryer than before, though her amused grin took a little of the sting out of it.
Leaving the bathroom, the pair reformed the trio with Ron—quartet if you counted Rufus—and returned to the previous conversation for a while longer before leaving Bueno Nacho, piling into the Possible minivan and driving back to Kim’s house in good cheer. On the way, Kim called Wade again, only to get a slightly less unusual automated video message from his system announcing he was unavailable to take the call, but would get back to her as soon as he could.
Back at Kim’s house, the group joined the rest of her family around the dining room table, having a great big lively lunch and impromptu going away party for her, the only pauses coming right after they ate, when Kim had to go upstairs and brush her teeth one last time before putting her toothbrush and the rest of her toiletries into a smaller carry-on bag, adding it to the pile of luggage by the front door when she came back downstairs, and then about a half-hour after that, when her cell phone rang.
Pulling out her phone, Kim’s brow furrowed slightly as she saw “unknown caller” displayed. With a hesitant tone she answered it with; “Hello?”
“See Kimmie? Told you I knew what I was doing.” Shego’s voice was smug. “No custom ring tone a few minutes before your ride shows up to raise any questions. To whit: I’m en route; I’ll be in front of your house in about ten minutes, ok?”
“All right then, thank you very much for the information.” Kim replied in a carefully neutral tone before hanging up, turning to everyone as she put her phone away and announcing; “That was my ride; they’re going to be here in about ten minutes.”
Kim’s family and friends burst into a flurry of chaotic action, her mother and Monique descending on her with a barrage of questions over last-minute details of what she may have forgotten to pack, while her father and Ron headed for the front door to take all her luggage out to the end of the driveway, and the twins ran around like crazy, basically getting into everything while really doing nothing. It was really a rather minor miracle that Kim made it out onto the front lawn with everything ready by the time Shego arrived.
“I’ll call you as soon as I get settled in.” Kim said after giving Ron a hug. “Which… might not be ‘til sometime tomorrow with the time difference.”
“Don’t sweat it KP.” Ron grinned.
Turning to Monique, Kim gave the dark girl a hug of her own, saying; “And I’ll be calling you soon too, because I’m going to get Wade to make you a special Kimmunicator so we’ll be able to talk regularly, ok?”
“Thanks Kim, and you make sure you enjoy yourself in Europe, y’hear?” Grinning, in a soft, wicked whisper into Kim’s ear Monique added; “Really enjoy yourself, if y’ catch my drift.”
Smiling and chuckling, Kim released Monique and answered; “I sure plan on it!”
Turning to the twins, Kim squatted down in front of them; “As for you two… don’t you dare go into my room or get anywhere near my bike while I’m away, understand?”
Both boys sighed and resignedly responded; “We won’t.” While they were looking down at the ground as they answered, Kim took advantage of their distracted state and grabbed up the both of them in a tight hug.
“Augh! Lemmi go!” Jim shouted while Tim yelled; “Ewww! Le’go!” Still squirming and trying to get free, they harmonized; “Gahhh! Girl germs! Get her off! Get her off! Mom! Dad!”
Smirking, Kim released her brothers, standing up as they stumbled back from her, shivering, making faces, and hunching their shoulders in revulsion. Moving over to her parents, Kim’s smile softened as she looked up at them.
“I’m going to get Wade to send you some Kimmunicators too, and I’ll stop by whenever I get a mission call that takes me near Middleton, all right?”
“All right Kimmie-cub.” James smiled. “You be sure to have fun while you’re away,” his tone turned stern, “but don’t forget you’re there to learn as well!” Sobering, with an even greater authority and a wagging finger he added; “And, don’t forget that things are a lot different over there too; I don’t want you spending too much time with any of those European boys, you understand? Make sure you listen to your guides and chaperones.”
Despite a faint blush, Kim had to fight to keep from laughing or smirking. “A-all right dad, I promise I won’t spend too much time with any boys over there, European or otherwise.” Behind her, Monique had to bite her tongue to stop herself from laughing, while Ron rubbed the back of his neck and tried to appear to be idly looking back at the house.
“That’s my girl.” James hugged Kim warmly. A moment later Ann joined him, saying; “You behave yourself over there Kimmie, and mind your manners. And be sure to take care of yourself and stay safe, all right?”
“I will mom.” Kim answered, hugging her parents back.
“I’ll miss you honey.” Ann said softly but fiercely.
“I’ll miss you all too mom.” Kim whispered back just as intensely.
After a few long moments, Kim and her parents finally broke apart. James cleared his throat quickly and said; “Well, let’s not keep your ride waiting any longer Kimmie. I’m sure whoever’s flying that thing has better things to do than wait around here while we draw out our goodbyes all day.”
“Sure dad.” Kim smiled softly and blinked a few times, her eyes ever so faintly misty.
As Kim approached the entry hatch of the currently off-white and silvery-grey paneled hover-jet, there was a brief moment of panic for her when Ron and her father wanted to help carry on her luggage, but Kim managed to deal with it by suggesting they help by passing the bags up the stairs and in to her bucket brigade style. Even so, with Ron nearly inside the main cabin as he passed bags to her along the short corridor leading to it, Kim was relieved to see Shego slouch down in the pilot’s seat until Kim could barely see her from where she stood in back.
Once her luggage was on board, Kim stood in the doorway and waved to her family and friends, neither her nor them having to shout as they gave their last goodbyes over the relative quiet of the hover-jet’s turboprops. After several long moments, Kim reluctantly closed the hatch on the scene in front of her, checking it to make sure it was sealed properly before heading back into the main cabin.
“All set now Kimmie?” Shego’s voice came from up front, where she’d straightened and was looking back at Kim from around her seat.
“Yep.” Kim replied, moving over to where she’d put her luggage and opening the door to the rear cargo compartment, intent on stowing the unsecured bags more properly. As she picked up the first suitcase, she sensed the vibrations in the deck change, and even though she felt almost no sensation of movement thanks to the high-tech plane’s inertial dampers, she knew Shego was taking off by the slight difference she’d noticed.
By the time Kim finished dragging the second of the big, heavy suitcases into the rear section of the plane, heaving it up onto a sturdy built-in storage rack to join the first, Shego reached the high altitude that was best for supersonic flight, and brought the hover-jet up to its maximum safe-speed, turning control over to the autopilot once she had. After that, she slid her seat back from piloting position and stood up, heading back to where Kim was just getting underway with her third bag. Grabbing the last two suitcases by their heavy-duty handles, Shego picked them up and joined Kim in back, easily sliding them onto the rack as if they were nothing. Turning to Kim, she gave a slight smirk and dusted her hands off.
“Think you brought enough with you Pumpkin, or should we go back for the kitchen sink?”
Turning to Shego, Kim blinked, pausing as she finally registered the faded black t-shirt, hiking boots, and most importantly, the equally worn denim overalls the pale woman was wearing.
“Hey!” Shego bristled, immediately recognizing the “what the hell?” expression on the girl’s features as if she’d read her mind. “I had limited options to work with for something to wear while lugging around your big-ass dusty luggage, all right? It was either this or my work suit…”
“I didn’t say anything…” Kim raised her hands in a placating gesture that she totally destroyed a moment later when she absolutely couldn’t stop herself from adding; “farmer Brown.”
Still struggling to resist and still failing, Kim snorted and chuckled outright over Shego’s increasingly aggravated expression.
“Oh come on Shego, lighten up. You know as well as I do that all you need to complete the look is a pitchfork and a big straw hat.”
Strangely enough, Shego looked away suddenly, and Kim couldn’t tell for sure, but she thought she noticed a faint darkening of green in her cheeks.
“Oh, tell me you do not have a big straw hat.” Kim grinned.
“No I do not have a big straw hat!” Shego snapped, turning and stalking out into the front cabin while petulantly mumbling under her breath; “It’s only a small one.”
Kim sighed and shook her head gently, following after the older woman. “C’mon, don’t be like that.” When Shego glanced back at her she put on a contrite expression and continued; “Look, I’m sorry, ok? Really. It’s just another one of those weird things like you and Smarty Mart that don’t seem to make any sense, so they make me laugh, all right? But there’s nothing wrong with it and I really shouldn’t have.”
“Damn straight,” Shego groused, “you don’t see me doing that.”
“Excuse me?” Kim crossed her arms beneath her breasts, her dry tone matching her expression and raised eyebrow. This time Kim was sure Shego was blushing a little when the otherwise pale woman finally responded; “Ok, ok… maybe not.”
Kim shook her head, smiling softly. “That’s better… and as long as it isn’t mean spirited there’s nothing wrong with a little teasing either.”
Shego snorted and shook her head a little more sharply than Kim, grinning wryly as she looked away for a second. “We… are going to make a very strange pair if this all works out between the two of us…”
“Heh… and what’s ‘normal’?” Kim grinned, and a moment later Shego faintly shook her head again and smiled in amusement, before turning and stepping over to the pilot’s seat, where she squatted down to rummage through the side compartment.
Moving closer, and after a few moments watching, Kim idly commented; “Y’know, that outfit actually wouldn’t be half bad, if you were to lose the boots… and the shirt…”
Looking back up over her shoulder to find Kim grinning down at her, Shego paused for a moment, her right eyebrow rising, and then dryly commented; “And that wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that you could easily see down my top from there if I wasn’t wearing a shirt, now would it?”
“No-noooo, of course not,” Kim’s grin broadened, “entirely coincidental that is…”
Shego snorted and shook her head, returning to her rummaging with a smirk and a dry; “Suuuure it is…” After a few more moments, she finally found what she was looking for and stood up again, turning back to Kim while holding a big three-ring binder and an almost equally large soft-covered book.
“Now, you said you’ve been working on getting your pilot’s license for the last few months, right? How far along are you on that?”
Kim blinked, then responded; “I passed all my certifications for a Private Pilot Certificate with ratings in Night Visual Flight Rules, Instrument Flight Rules, Multi-Engine Craft, Turbine Engine, and most of the various design feature ratings, but I still need to log another twenty hours of flight time before I qualify to get it, and…” Kim paused, her gaze wandering as she looked somewhat embarrassed, “I still need to pass my Prop Driven rating too.”
“Ok, that’s pretty go—” Shego broke off for a moment, her brow furrowing in confusion, “waitaminute… how, exactly, do you not have your Prop rating yet?”
“Well… I ahhh…” Kim dithered, blushing faintly, “I haven’t really flown much in the way of things with propellers. I mostly learned on Excalibur jets while flying back and forth from Corscan’s.”
“So… you… learned how to fly… on supersonic jets. Have I got that right?” Shego shook her head in incredulous—and slightly amused—disgust. “Do you ever do anything the easy way Princess?” Sighing, Shego shook her head again. “Well, anyway, I guess we’ll be using a Piper Cub to get around in for the first few trips we take.” A third shake of her head seemed to recover Shego completely. “And you’re certainly well enough along that you should be able to understand these without any help.”
Shego held out the binder and book to Kim, who hesitantly took them from her.
“What are these for?”
“Technical manual for the helicopter I’ll be getting you like I said I would,” Shego tapped the binder with her right index finger, then indicated the book; “and a flight manual for helicopters. I don’t intend to start with you until you’ve done your homework and you’re up to speed. I had enough of those kinds of headaches to last me a lifetime while teaching Mego how to drive thank you very much…”
“Ok, so… wait, what? Helicopter?” Kim was just a tad confused from the chaotic barrage of shifting topics over the last minute or so.
“Yeah, you said one of the things you were worried about if you moved in with me was being able to collect the bu— your little chum, for your world-saving escapades, remember?”
“Oh, right.”
“Well, weather permitting, in one of Drakken’s crap-copters you can get anywhere on the face of the earth if you’ve got twenty hours to kill tops, so that shouldn’t be much of a problem—once you learn how to fly it anyway. Speaking of which: we’ve got about a two-hour flight ahead of us, so get to work. I want to start as soon as possible so you won’t have any excuses to back out of this.”
Kim blinked as Shego turned and sat down in the pilot’s seat, digging out a fashion magazine as she settled into its comfortable padded contours. An instant later Kim shook her head, irritation tingeing her voice as she dryly responded; “Shego, I’m here. I’m not going to be making any excuses or trying to ‘get out’ of anything. I wouldn’t be here if I was.”
Shego chuckled softly, a wry smile on her lips as she spoke without looking up from her magazine. “You say that now Pumpkin, but you haven’t even lived with me for a day yet. Maybe you should wait and see before you go making promises, hmmm?”
Kim gave her head an irritated shake and sat down in the copilot’s seat without responding, opening the flight manual to the first page and starting to read with a fixed, stubborn expression on her features, determined to prove Shego wrong.

The AFF system includes a rigorous and complex abuse control system in order to prevent improper use of the AFF service, and we hope that its deployment indicates a good-faith effort to eliminate any illegal material on the site in a fair and unbiased manner. This abuse control system is run in accordance with the strict guidelines specified above.
