Shego rolled out of bed at the crack of noon, scratching her head with a yawn and wandering over to the bank of lockers near her cot to put on a sports bra and shorts before quickly braiding her mussy hair and tying it off at the end. Then she grabbed a handful of PowerBars and a big bottle of water and went over to her desk, gnawing on one of the compressed slabs of honeyed granola while setting everything else down, including herself.
As she pulled her chair in closer to the desk, Shego tapped the spacebar on her keyboard to bring her computer out of sleep mode, then opened her bottled water and took a drink while waiting for the system to warm up. As soon as the twenty-four inch widescreen monitor went from a fuzzy blur of smeared colors to its usual sharp crispness, Shego clicked on her encryption wizard and checked the readouts on the triple-redundant software before connecting to the Internet via the system’s satellite uplink.
Activating the forwarding randomizer, Shego started eating another PowerBar while she waited for the program to bounce her connection through another three miscellaneous satellites and twenty-seven servers before it was ready. Once her connection was sufficiently convoluted, Shego activated an array of anti-trace software packages and set them to running in the background before finally clicking on an icon of a small black orchid tucked away in the upper right hand corner of her desktop.
As the program started to run, Shego had time to take another drink and finish off her PowerBar before the entire screen turned black, indicating it was ready. She eyed a third PowerBar before giving her head a little shake and hitting the invisible “connect” icon that she knew would be in the lower left-hand section of the screen this time. After waiting a minute or so, Shego gave an irritated little grunt and picked up the PowerBar she’d previously eyed, leaning back in her chair and starting to eat it while she waited.
Shego was starting to work on her fourth and final bar when the black screen in front of her suddenly shifted to a virtual view of rolling, sunlit hills filled with thousands of black orchids, all growing under a soft blue sky that had several wispy clouds streaking it. Shego leaned forward and was just about to start typing in her password when her fingers froze above the keyboard, hovering motionless as she saw the field ripple as a virtual wind blew through it, sending undulating waves across the landscape as the orchids swayed back and forth gently.
“Phew, that was close…” Shego whispered under her breath, knowing that a windy day in the field meant a different password needed to be used.
Typing in the correct password, Shego only had to wait a few moments before a crisp female voice speaking in cultured British tones asked her; “Ahhhh Shego, to what do I owe the pleasure of hearing from you on this fine early summer’s day? Might we be getting a little restless love?”
“What makes you say that?”
“Well, I haven’t heard news of your illustrious employer Dr. Drakken once more gracing one of the world’s many lovely detention facilities with his presence, nor do I see any robot armies marching down the street when I look out my window, and I haven’t heard a peep from you in almost two months, since you asked me to round up those diggers and brokers for you. All in all I’d say that it appears all’s quiet on the western front, and I’m quite familiar with how much that gets on your nerves if it keeps up for longer than you’d like.”
Shego smiled faintly as the woman she knew only as Black Orchid spoke, watching the orchids in the virtual field react to her voice, forming erratic waveforms that undulated through the simulated flowers like ripples in a pond, only more chaotic.
Orchid had been her primary fixer since nearly the beginning of her criminal career, and over the last five years Shego had developed as close a relationship with the woman as was possible given their respective professions. During the course of several unpleasant past incidents, Orchid had proven herself trustworthy and loyal—far more so than usual for someone in her line of work—and Shego had grown to consider her one of the few friends she had. As a result of both that and her being the criminal equivalent of Shego’s manager, the woman knew her quite well indeed.
“Actually I’ve been involved in a few personal projects of my own, and they’ve all kept me more than busy. Speaking of which, I need you to do a few things for me.”
“At your service Shego, as always… for my usual fee of course.” Orchid responded jovially.
“I need more diggers; the best available this time, and as many as you can get—well, within reason anyway. I also need you to set up meets with Big Daddy Brotherson, the Kraken Society, and Neon Spyder in the next few days. And I need all of it as soon as you can manage.”
“I see. My my my, whatever are you doing Shego? Not thinking of finally going solo, are we? Well, never mind, none of my business really.”
Shego snorted softly and answered; “No, nothing like that. I’m digging into that woman again, Corscan Mataii. Full bore this time; I need to know everything there is to know about her, down to the color of the drapes in her room when she was six.”
“Oh really love? And would this be business or pleasure?”
Shego raised an eyebrow, even though Orchid couldn’t see it, and responded; “And why the hell would it be pleasure?”
“Well, you do like your men big and burly, so I figured you might have decided to try the same with your women.” Orchid finished with a short laugh.
Shego gave her head an exasperated shake and rolled her eyes before saying; “I meant more along the lines of the stalker overtone gathering this much information on someone I was interested in like that would imply Orchid!”
“Oh that.” Orchid gave another amused laugh. “Well now, you can’t expect me to be thinking like that, now can you? With your lifestyle and the risks involved, I’d rather be much more likely to think you’d be like everyone else in your position, now wouldn’t I love? As a matter of fact, just a few months ago I brokered the exact same sort of background check for a client who’s not even in the business; they’re only fantastically wealthy. It’s the world we live in love, and there’s no getting around that.”
“You’d be surprised.” Shego murmured with a soft smile, thinking of Kim. The girl might have thrown her in jail repeatedly—might still throw her in jail actually—but Shego knew Kim would never take advantage of her like that. In a louder tone she said; “Yeah well this might be personal, but it’s not personal like that, ok?”
“All right love, all right; no need to get testy.” Orchid’s voice was apologetic, but still held a faint undertone of amusement. “I’ll find you the best diggers money can buy, and set up your meetings as well. Would you like me to inform the dealers of your interests when I contact them so they can come prepared, or would you prefer to handle that bit on your own?”
Shego pondered for a moment, then answered; “Yeah, tell them what I’m going to want them to look into. It might drive up the price, but better they get on it ASAP instead of delaying it just so I can save a few bucks.”
“Right-o love. Is there anything else you’ll be needing?”
Shego opened her mouth to respond in the negative, and then paused as a sudden thought popped into her head.
“Actually yeah, there is one more thing. Hang on a second, ok?” Shego finally said while firing up her web browser.
“All right love.”
Shego spent the next few minutes running searches and narrowing her parameters until she found exactly what she was looking for. Once she did she forwarded the link through her connection to Orchid and said; “I need you to arrange delivery of one of these to this address.”
Shego typed in the address through the interface as well, and after she did, there was a long pause on the other end before Orchid responded in a surprised, inquisitive voice that bordered on amazed.
“Oh reeeeally?”
“Yes, really.” Shego responded dryly.
“And would you perhaps be willing to tell me exactly why I need to be preparing for the Apocalypse this is surely a sign of, or shall you be tormenting me with my own curiosity instead?”
Shego would have snapped “none of your damn business” to anyone else, but Orchid was a friend—and more to the point, as a friend, saying something defensive like that to her would have piqued the woman’s curiosity even further, so instead Shego said; “Just evening some scales Orchid. You know how much I hate being in debt.”
“Mmmm, I see. Well then, I’ll be sure to get this done for you. Oh, and will this be a rush job as well then?”
“Sooner’s better than later, but no real hurry, no.”
“All right then. I’ll contact you with the relevant times, dates, and locations once I’ve arranged your meetings love. Talk to you soon.”
“Talk to you soon Orchid.” Shego responded, hitting disconnect and then closing the communication program afterwards.
Once the program shut down, Shego went through the far less convoluted but nearly equally secure process of contacting the various investment firms she had handling her more liquid assets, instructing her proctors to transfer a generous thirty million into several of her operating accounts, just to be on the safe side—better to have the money on hand now and not need it than to need it later and not have it on hand.
After she was done, Shego shut down her Internet connection and stood up, turning to survey the grungy underground lair around her. With a sigh she headed towards the stairs; bathroom, a couple of hours working out, a couple sparring with the Synthodrones, shower, get dressed, and it would be right around time to call Kim.
Shego paused on the stairs, smiling wryly and shaking her head over that last thought. Her life was nothing if not a never-ending cavalcade of the bizarre and unbelievable. Moving once more, Shego kept smiling; at least this weirdness hopefully promised to become something good…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kim finished changing, exited the girls’ locker room, and turned, heading for her hall locker, when Monique fell in alongside her. As she did, Kim smiled faintly; Monique had been watching her closely in every class they’d had together, they’d eaten lunch together, and after school she’d sat in the bleachers watching Kim during the last practice of the year—though really it was more a casual meeting of the cheerleading squad than an actual practice—all while visibly growing more and more impatient as the day went on.
“So you done for the day girl?” Monique asked.
Kim gave a soft snort and responded; “Yes Mo. As soon as I clean out my locker we can go, ok?”
Monique grinned and said; “Hey, there’s a time for patience and a time for… not. And this is definitely one of those ‘not’ times, y’dig?”
Kim gave a soft laugh and Monique joined in. A minute or so later they stopped at Kim's locker and Monique waited while Kim collected the handful of things she still had left in it—unlike Ron, Kim had taken most of her things home last Friday when finals had ended.
Just as Kim was finishing up, she heard Monique all but purr; “Ooooh, here comes that tall drink ‘a hawt ‘n yummy…”
“Hmmm, what?” Kim looked up to find Monique staring past her down the hall. Glancing in the same direction, Kim paused for a moment as a tall, handsome young man walked up to the pair. As he came to a stop she smiled and said; “Oh, hey Eric. What are you still doing here, waiting for Ron?”
“Well, actually, no…” Eric replied, “I wanted to talk to you Kim.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yeah, I was wondering… well, I was wondering if you had a date for the prom yet.”
“Oh, ahhh… oh.”
Kim blinked. Eric had transferred to Middleton High around mid-spring, nearly three months ago. Since then he and Ron had become fairly good friends, and Kim had gotten to know him somewhat by association. Even so, until this very moment she’d never suspected he was interested in her. Then again, she hadn’t exactly been paying much attention to things like that anymore—outside of her social training anyway, and she’d never tried to hone those skills on her friends; it would have been too… awkweird to try manipulating them like that.
“Actually, I don’t even know if I’m going to the prom Eric.” Kim said hesitantly. “I mean, it’s only junior prom for me and I’ve been pretty busy lately, so I haven’t been thinking about it. I guess if I do go it’ll probably be with Ron, like we usually do.” Kim paused, then lamely added; “Why do you ask?”
“Well, if no one’s asked you yet, I was wondering if you’d go with me. I mean, if you’re going to go; no pressure or anything…”
“Oh…” Kim paused, franticly trying to come up with something that wouldn’t be too harsh. “Well, it’s very nice of you to ask Eric, but I don’t think so, I’m sorry. You’re a great guy and a friend, but I’m just not interested in any kind of relationship right now, and I wouldn’t want to give you the wrong idea, ok?”
Kim didn’t like lying to Eric—more because of the way what she said still left things too open to interpretation than anything else—but she couldn’t think of anything else to say that wouldn’t come out too hard on him, and he really was a great guy. If it wasn’t for everything that happened in the last few months and her discovering the truth about herself, he was exactly the kind of guy she would have loved to go out with. But now…
I mean what else am I supposed to do? Kim thought dryly as she waited for Eric’s reaction, hoping he wouldn’t take it too badly. It’s not like I can say; “Oh, sorry Eric, I’m Gay now.” Aside from the fact that I don’t want anyone else to know, he’d probably think I was lying about that just to blow him off! No, this is the best I can do. Oh, I hope he isn’t hurt too much…
Eric’s face fell a little—and for the barest instant, Kim could swear she saw a fierce irritation flash in his eyes before it vanished as if it never was—and then he said; “Oh, well, that’s ok Kim, I understand. Maybe we’ll see each other there and you can save a dance for me, all right?”
“Ok Eric, bye.” Kim said as Eric turned and started heading for the exit, and he held up his right hand in an over-the-shoulder wave and responded; “Bye.”
Kim watched Eric leave, feeling just a little sad for him. As she watched him go, Monique stepped up alongside her, watching as well. The moment he was out the door, the dark-skinned girl shook her head slightly and said; “Mmmm… it’s a damn shame it is. Fine boy like that goin’ all to waste.” Monique gave a soft sigh.
“Well it’s not like I’m encouraging him or anything.” Kim said. “What am I supposed to do, avoid him or give him the cold shoulder or something?”
“I know, I know, I’m just sayin’…” Monique responded.
Before either of them could say anything more, they heard Ron’s voice behind them.
“Hey ladies, was that Eric I saw leaving there?”
Kim and Monique turned around as Ron walked up to them, and Kim said; “Yeah, it was.”
“So what’d he want?” Ron asked as he set his backpack down, leaning it up against the lockers next to him.
“Poor, misguided boy asked our girl here to the prom.” Monique said before Kim could even open her mouth.
“Oh. So what’d you say?” Ron asked curiously, looking at Kim. Kim widened her eyes slightly and inclined her head at Ron, giving him a “hello?” look, and he scratched the back of his head while looking at the floor, ruefully responding; “Oh yeah, right. Sorry.”
“So… what are you going to do about the prom anyway Kim?” Ron asked, looking up again.
“Honestly I haven’t been thinking about it Ron. I guess we’ll be going together like we usually do, right?”
“Well ahhh… actually, I was thinking of asking Zita to go with me Kim. I mean, assuming no one’s asked her yet. I know it’s kinda last minute, but it’s taken me this long to build up the courage to ask her—but I’m going to do it tonight for sure, no matter what! I think… maybe…” Ron gave his head a vehement shake. “No! No, I will damnit! As god is my witness, I will ask her to go tonight!”
Kim smiled at Ron’s indecision, encouragingly saying; “That’s great Ron! I’m sure she’ll say yes.”
“Yeah, assuming she hasn’t had a date for weeks now already.” Monique said dryly. Kim shot Monique a sharp glance and a low, harsh “Mo!” and Monique hastily added; “But as long as she doesn’t I’m sure she’ll say yes. Girl does seem to like you for some reason after all, an’ it never hurts to try, right?”
Ron smiled and responded; “Thanks guys, I—”
Before Ron could say anything more, he was interrupted by Wade’s sudden appearance on the communications rig in Kim’s locker—the only thing she hadn’t taken home for the summer yet.
“Hey Kim.” Wade said in a miserable tone that carried an edge of frustration as well. “I’m sorry I didn’t call you sooner, but I’ve been having some real problems here…”
“Oh, man, Wade! What happened to you? You look terrible!” Ron said before Kim could respond.
Ron’s assessment might have been harsh, but it was also accurate. Wade’s hair was mussed, his eyes were slightly dark and puffy, and his face had a harried, haggard air about it. Kim also noticed that the young genius was still wearing the now rumpled blue flannel pajamas he had on last night.
“Yeah Wade, what’s the sitch? You really don’t look that good…” Kim added herself.
“I’ve been up all night trying to find any information I could on Corscan Kim, but I’m coming up empty on every front. Even though it’s impossible, it seems like there’s nothing out there on her…”
“That’s ok Wade, I’m sure you’ll find something soon, but you really shouldn’t have stayed up all night; you need your sleep.” Kim said, while at the same time Ron intently asked; “Corscan? Why are you trying to find out stuff about Corscan?”
Both Kim and Wade ignored Ron as Wade replied; “No, you don’t understand Kim; I can’t find anything on Corscan anymore. All the information I came up with when I first started investigating her months ago? It’s not there now. The records of her past, the schools she went to, her driver’s license, birth certificate, Social Security number? All of it’s gone. There’s no record of her involvement with Corsair International either. The company files list some guy named Reggie Silver as the president of operations for the last eighteen years, the complex outside of Macon isn’t part of their assets anymore, and all the staff that were working there aren’t in the records either! The company headquarters is listed at an address in Macon now too.”
“What’s more, every single stored satellite image of the area the complex is built on out to a half-mile in every direction has been altered somehow, so that they only show empty fields and wilderness. And I mean every satellite image Kim; all of them… well, except for the NSA, Pentagon, and Global Justice systems anyway; it’s going to take me a while longer to gain access to those and see if it’s the same with them too.”
“What? You can’t find anything?” Kim asked in a shocked voice.
“No Kim, I can’t. And that’s crazy. Practically impossible. Everything that goes up on the web gets copies of it spread out through countless servers and caches just from the way the Internet works, how the information is stored and accessed and shared, but there’s nothing there. They got rid of it all, every last trace of it. None of it exists anymore. You can’t do that in just a few days… at least, not without an enormous amount of computing power and a team of specialists who are at least close to my level of ability. It’s driving me crazy trying to find something they missed, or even figure out how they did it all without leaving any digital footprints behind. It’s unbelievable.”
“Oh wow. I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble Wade, I never though it would be that hard. Listen, I want you to promise me you’ll get some rest and not obsess on this, ok? You can’t let yourself get so wrapped up in it that it affects you this badly, all right?”
“Kim, I have to figure this out. It’s not just that I want to help you, I need to figure out how they did this. I need to come up with something to counter it. This is what I do; I’m one of the best coding specialists in the world—probably in the top ten—and I can’t just let this go without figuring it out!” Wade responded passionately.
Kim shook her head with equal determination and firmly responded; “I get it Wade, but Corscan’s letter said I can’t obsess on this, and that applies to you too. You’ve got to keep it all in perspective. This puzzle isn’t going anywhere, and you running yourself into the ground isn’t going to help either of us figure it out, right? I want you to promise me you’ll stop for now and get some rest and some food, since I’m sure you haven’t really eaten either, have you? Once you’re rested up and fully recovered you can go back to working on this again, all right?”
Behind Kim, Ron said “Letter? What letter?” but Monique shushed him and he quieted down, though he was practically radiating frustrated curiosity now. In front of Kim, Wade stubbornly said; “But Kim, I—”
“No Wade.” Kim cut the boy off firmly. “This is not a negotiation, understand? I’m not going to let you do this to yourself. You can do what I say or I can come over there and waste both our time making sure you do it, but you will do it, understand?”
Behind Kim, Monique gave a small amused and impressed grin, murmuring; “You go girl!” while Ron’s curiosity lay forgotten for a moment as he looked at Kim in surprise. He’d seen—and experienced—Kim “laying down the law” before, but usually when she did it, it was with an angry determination some might even call bitchy, or a slightly patronizing air that was reminiscent of the one she used while babysitting. This was different. It was simple determination that brooked no argument. No, it wasn’t even that. It was like Kim expected to be obeyed… no, knew she would be obeyed, and anything else wasn’t even an option. It was strangely disconcerting to Ron… and just a little scary.
“I…” after a moment of gaping silence, Wade’s mouth closed and he bowed his head in defeat. A moment later he raised his hands and raked his fingers through his hair, leaning back in his seat and holding his head while looking at the ceiling with a frustrated half-groan, half-sigh. After a few seconds he laced his fingers behind his head and looked back to Kim once more.
“All right Kim, I guess you’re right. I’m going to get something to eat, relax a little, and go to bed—but I’m gonna be on this first thing next morning, ok? I will figure this out, both for you and me, got it?”
“Fine Wade, just as long as you take care of yourself, ok? See you tomorrow then, bye.” Kim said just before Wade leaned forward and turned off the transmission with a quick; “Bye Kim.”
“Ok, would someone please tell me what the heck is going on now?” Ron demanded insistently the minute Wade’s image collapsed to a white dot in the center of the black screen.
Kim sighed and turned to Ron, saying; “I went down to Corscan’s last night for… a few things, and when I got there, she was gone. The whole place was empty. Everyone was gone along with all the major equipment in the place. All that was there was some office furniture and a bunch of things Corscan left for me, along with a letter she’d written.”
“Ha! I knew it! I knew something was up with her!” Ron declared with self-satisfied intensity, and a hint of perverse glee as well.
Kim frowned and, with slightly narrowed eyes, sharply responded; “What are you talking about Ron? And why is it that every so often you seem to have a problem with Corscan?”
“What? No…” Ron backpedaled, raising his palms in a placating gesture while thinking furiously. “I just meant that I knew something was up because of the way you’ve been acting today, kinda out of touch and all. I mean, what else could it have been?”
Kim opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say a word, she was interrupted by a peculiar, strangely familiar musical sequence of electronic beeps, which it took her a moment to realize were coming from her cell phone.
While Ron and Monique looked on with as much confusion as Kim herself had, the redhead dug her phone out of her pocket and flipped it open. It wasn’t until she saw who the caller was—S.G.—that she finally recognized the familiar tone; it was the opening riff to the old rock song Bad to the Bone.
Groaning, Kim closed her eyes and lowered her head slightly, shaking it gently as she smiled and gave a disbelieving, amused chuckle. A moment later she looked up and hit receive, bringing the phone to her ear and saying; “Hey, what’s up?”
“Hey Kimmie, just checking in like I said I would. You are finished school by now, right?” Shego responded, her voice clear over the receiver.
“Yeah, I’ve finished everything for the day.” Kim answered, closing the door to her locker.
“So how’d your little friend do then? Has he called you with any useful information yet?”
Kim was just about to answer when she noticed Ron watching her, and realized she couldn’t speak freely without raising questions she didn’t want to answer right now. She needed a distraction—which was highly ironic all things considered, though Kim was hardly in a position to appreciate that irony.
Kim’s mind raced, and a moment later she told Shego; “Hang on a second.”
Turning her attention to Ron, Kim shifted her phone to her left hand and dug out the letter Corscan had left her, handing it to him while saying; “I’ve got to take this call Ron, but here, read this, ok?”
Ron nodded, taking the letter from Kim, and as he was focused on opening it, Kim shot Monique a telling glance, and the dark-skinned girl nodded to her in return. After that Kim took a few steps away from the pair while Monique moved in closer to Ron, concentrating on him now as he unfolded the letter. Once Kim was sure she was covered, she brought the phone up to her ear once more.
“Still there?” Kim asked.
“No, I hung up. That’s why you can hear a dial tone instead of my voice.” Shego responded sarcastically.
Kim ignored the barb, quietly saying; “Wade’s run into trouble finding anything. He says that all the information that used to be out there on Corscan has vanished, and that it would be nearly impossible to do that without a lot of resources to do it with. He also said that someone’s altered the images from every satellite he’s accessed so far, replacing the CI complex and the surrounding area with empty fields. Oh, and that reminds me; the company records say that someone named Reggie Silver has been the head of the company for the last eighteen years now, not Corscan, and all the staff at the complex aren’t in the employee files either. For that matter neither is the complex itself.”
Shego responded with a soft, impressed grunt and then said; “Well color me impressed. Of course I could pull off the same thing if I wanted to spend the money. Well, maybe not in just a few days given the sheer volume of stuff about me out there, but still…” Shego paused for a moment, then continued; “All right, I’ve started the ball rolling on my end too, but given the way things work in my world, it’s going to take a few days to really get going. I’ll call you if something unexpected comes up before then, but otherwise I doubt anything will happen. We can get together sometime Wednesday night and compare notes, all right Princess?”
Kim was silent for several moments, considering. Since it was prom night, she’d be able to get away from home without any questions, and it had the added benefit of keeping most of Middleton high’s student body busy, so there’d be far less chance of anyone who knew her seeing her out meeting Shego either. Of course, it also meant that she really would miss out on the prom, but as she said to Eric, it was only her junior prom anyway, and she really hadn’t been thinking about it much either.
Nodding to herself, Kim finally answered; “All right, I’ll meet you Wednesday then, but where?”
“No idea, but I’ll think of something by then…” Shego responded.
“Ok, but I’ll need to know before the last minute so I can be ready. Right after school on Wednesday at the latest, all right?”
“All right Kimmie, I’ll make sure to let you know by then. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Kim hit disconnect and closed up her phone, turning as she put it away to find that Ron was just finishing up with the letter. Stepping back to her friends, Kim asked; “Well, what do you think Ron?”
“Obviously something’s up with her big time KP, but I don’t have a clue as to what that is, sorry.” Ron answered, before his expression shifted to apprehension as he added; “You don’t think…” Ron trailed off suddenly, shutting his mouth with an audible click.
“What is it Ron?” Kim asked intently at his abrupt pause.
“Well… it’s just… I mean I don’t want to… say… anything that might…” Ron trailed off again, reluctance clearly evident upon his features.
“Spit it out Ron.” Kim demanded.
“It’s just… you don’t think she might have… gone evil do you?” Ron’s last words came out in a quick, anxious rush, obvious apprehension in his eyes as he spoke.
Behind the pair, Monique winced and couldn’t resist a low, murmured; “Oooo boy, you done stepped in it now.”
To the great surprise of both friends, Kim just sighed, her face falling slightly, and looked down at the floor. In a soft voice laced with traces of sadness, worry, and even a hint of fear, she responded; “I don’t know Ron, I really don’t know. I don’t think so, and I don’t want to think so, but I can’t rule it out. There’s a fair amount of evidence against that, but not enough to be sure…”
Shaking her head, Kim looked up at Ron again and said; “Look Ron, I really don’t want to dump all of this on you right now, with you planning on asking Zita to the prom tonight and all. But if you’re not doing anything tomorrow could we get together and talk about this? I can’t really do much until Wade or… any other leads come through, but I’d like to try and work out as much of it as I can, and I’d like to hear what you think too.”
“No way KP! I’ll come by tonight!”
“No Ron!” Kim said firmly. “You heard Wade, and there’s no reason you should have to change your plans because of this. I don’t like it, but this is going to take a while to work out, so there’s no big rush, ok? I want you to go do everything you had planned tonight, understand me? Tomorrow’s soon enough to talk about what’s going on with me, all right?”
“I don’t know…” Ron said hesitantly, and Kim’s expression hardened, prompting him to near immediately cave. “All right, all right! But promise me we’re going to talk about this right after school tomorrow, all right?”
“Ok, right after school then.”
“I don’t suppose you’d be willing to… ditch tomorrow, like nearly everyone else will be doing, right?” Ron asked hesitantly.
“No Ron.” Kim’s irritation was clear in both tone and body language as she crossed her arms while answering. “And ‘nearly everyone’ is not going to be ditching tomorrow either.”
Ron at least had the good grace to look properly contrite, rubbing the back of his neck and self-consciously murmuring; “Ah, heh heh, yeah, right. Well, I had to try…”
“Mmmm…” Kim hummed dryly.
“Well, I guess I’ll get going then; gotta get ready for tonight after all.” Ron paused, then added; “You’re sure you don’t want me to come by later?”
“Yes Ron, I’m sure.” Kim said firmly. “Now get out of here already.”
“Ok, if you’re sure.” Ron picked up his backpack and headed for the front door, grinning as he looked over his shoulder and said; “Wish me luck ladies.”
“You go get ‘em tiger!” Monique grinned, while alongside her Kim added; “Good luck Ron!”
A moment later Kim turned and picked up her backpack, making sure she had everything before closing it up.
“All right then, I believe we had a ‘date’, right Mo?” Kim grinned as she turned back to Monique.
“Ahhh yeah, lead on girl, lead on. You’ve got plenty to tell me and I don’t want to wait any longer than I have to to start; who knows what else might come up?”
Monique grinned back at Kim as she hefted her own backpack over her shoulder, and Kim laughed as they both started heading for the door, each of them eager for the coming conversation and hoping nothing else would interrupt their plans for the rest of the day.

This abuse control system is run in accordance with the strict guidelines specified above.
