“So? Are you gonna open that or what?”
Shego’s voice cut through the haze of confusion surrounding Kim, snapping her out of the daze she’d been in for who knew how long, staring down blankly at the letter looking up at her from atop the center suitcase in front of her, her name emblazoned across its face in sharp black ink. Blinking, she absentmindedly responded; “Yeah, yeah.”
Kim’s outstretched fingers trembled faintly as she reached for the letter with a slight hesitation, her nerves on edge as to what it might contain given the eerie, inexplicable situation she found herself in. Picking up the envelope, the heavy paper felt all the more weighty to Kim with the imagined gravity of its contents added to it, and she simply held the letter for a long moment, staring at it, before finally turning it over in her hands to find the back sealed with a single drop of pressed red wax.
Snapping the thin, irregular medallion of brittle wax in two with her thumbs, Kim opened the envelope and withdrew a single sheet of rich, creamy paper from it. Dropping the envelope back onto the luggage, Kim unfolded the letter carefully, holding it open with one thumb on the top crease and one on the bottom. Despite the light from Shego’s energy giving the page a greenish tinge, the black, neatly flowing print stood out in stark contrast, and Kim quickly recognized Corscan’s precise, gently curved and slanted printing from the few times she’d seen it before.
As Kim’s gaze traveled across the page, she could almost hear Corscan’s voice in her head, its smoked-honey tones bringing the words to life as she read them.
Dear Kim;
An’ that’s not just an idle pleasantry of etiquette darlin’; you really have become quite dear to me over the last few months; I truly hope you know that. I also hope that you’re willin’ to try an’ understand what I had to do here as well, an’ that you’ll be able to forgive me for it. I know this will seem like I’m abandonin’ you, an’ if I’m truly honest, I am, but you have to understand that it’s not because I want to Kim, it’s because I have to right now. If I could be with you, I would be; you have to believe me when I say that.
Unfortunately, I have responsibilities that go far beyond those you know about, an’ my first duty can’t be to my own wants an’ desires, as much as I’d like it to be. I’ve already strayed from the path considerably as it is, but I’ve never claimed to be a saint, an’ resistin’ temptation has never been my strong suite—an’ believe me Kim, you are a considerable temptation for me, in more ways than you could ever imagine. So, as much as I know it will hurt an’ confuse you, an’ as much as it hurts me to do that to you, I have to leave you for a time. But I promise you, I will return, an’ when I do, I’ll tell you everythin’ you want to know, an’ considerably more than that as well.
I’d tell you not to bother tryin’ to find me, but that’s pointless, since we both know you’d try anyway, so rather I’ll tell you that you shouldn’t let tryin’ to find me take up too much of your time, because you’re not goin’ to succeed. An’ I know that’s goin’ to make you even more upset, but you can’t let it get to you Kim, can’t let it become an obsession. Please, just let it go. Live your life to its fullest, if not for me, then for yourself.
I also expect you to keep up with your trainin’ Kim, all of it. Just because I’m not there or because you’re angry with me is no reason for you to stop. I’ve always believed in you; your strength, your intelligence, your determination, your dedication, they’re all remarkable, an’ I know you can accomplish incredible things with them.
Most importantly though, I want you to remember one thing above all else Kim; always follow your heart, that’s all that matters.
Corscan.
Kim read the letter twice, and then a third time, very carefully; just to make sure she wasn’t missing anything. After that she looked off into space, staring without seeing as she tried to make sense of it all, confusion and a wounded sense of desertion swirling through her disjoined thoughts. Once again it took Shego’s voice to cut through everything and finally snap her out of it.
“Well? What’d it say?” Shego asked impatiently.
“Hunh, what?” Kim answered distractedly, turning to look at Shego.
“The letter you just read at least twice, what’d it say? Do you know what’s going on now?” Shego repeated in greater detail.
Kim shook her head. “No, not really. I mean… kinda. But not exactly…” Kim trailed off, considering, and then with another miniscule shake of her head she raised her left hand, holding the letter out to Shego.
Shego took the letter from Kim and quickly read through it, her brow furrowing with confusion by the end, and then read it once more.
“Ooooh-kay. Shego confused now.” Shego said, looking up at Kim to find the girl looking back at her with a complicated expression of pain, confusion, and hints of rising resentment. “Does any of this make sense to you Kimmie?”
“Not really. I mean, I kind of suspected that Corscan was involved in some other things besides the work she did here, but I never really knew what it was, and I never really asked because it didn’t come up all that often. How could I have been so stupid?”
Kim’s voice wavered between anger and pain as she continued; “And how could she just leave like this, without telling me anything, without saying goodbye? What? Was she just using me? Was I just another distraction for her? Another fucking lay to add to the list of all the others? Did she even care about me at all?”
What Kim didn’t voice was the worry in the back of her head, the worry that she was currently drowning out with pain and anger, focusing on the most superficial aspect of what was happening instead. If Corscan was more than she seemed, as Shego suspected, as this sudden disappearance seemed to prove, then why had she come into Kim’s life? Had she been trying to use her for something? Get close to her so she could manipulate her, just like Kim knew she was highly skilled at doing? And if she wasn’t trying to do that… if it wasn’t all some big lie… if she really did care about Kim… then what had happened to make her leave like this?
It was that last possibility that Kim was trying to bury deepest, because it scared her the most. Corscan was the unstoppable force that had beaten both her and Shego with relative ease. She had power and resources to rival any of the organizations Kim had worked with in the past, and she wasn’t afraid to use them. Most of all, everything Kim had seen from Corscan told her she met her problems head-on. If she’d left because she was dealing with some sort of threat, how big was it that she had to disappear like this? And if she’d been forced to leave, was she in danger now? Corscan’s letter didn’t indicate anything like that, but Kim was sure… Kim thought she knew the big woman well enough to know that she would have tried to protect her from it if that was the case, and that engendered a maelstrom of emotions within Kim. Fear for a woman that she might not love, but whom she did care for very deeply. Guilt that her first impulse had been to mistrust and blame. Outrage that she would think Kim needed to be protected. And shame that she was angry with someone who cared for her enough to want to keep her safe.
While Kim wrapped herself in hot anger to keep cold dread at bay, beside her, unnoticed, Shego was struggling herself, traces of that inner battle written in her conflicted expression despite her efforts to mask it. After several long moments her features hardened for an instant, irritated, and she looked down, shaking her head and muttering; “I can’t believe I’m about to do this…”
Looking up at Kim, Shego took a deep breath and let out a long sigh before saying; “I don’t think you’ve got any worries there Kimmie.”
Turning to Shego, Kim’s eyes still flashed with resentment as she angrily said; “What do you mean?”
“I’m not saying there isn’t something up with yo— with Corscan. In fact,” Shego held the letter up in her left hand and fluttered it a few times, “this pretty much proves there’s more to her than what either of us knew. But all of this?” Shego gestured around the room with little rolling flourishes of her right hand. “Yeah, no matter how rich you are, you don’t abandon a multimillion dollar complex and relocate hundreds of operatives just because you can’t deal with your sex-toy right now, you just tell them to get lost, or ignore them, or whatever.” Shego shook her head. “And you don’t leave them letters trying to explain it as much as you can either… and you sure as hell don’t go to the trouble of teaching a notch on your bedpost the skills she’ll need to recognize that fact, or the perfect fighting style she’ll need to kick your ass for it.”
Kim’s expression softened slightly, calming in the face of Shego’s words, and the other woman gave a quick, soft sigh before continuing.
“So, unless she’s the stereotypical complete psycho mastermind type, which I seriously doubt even you wouldn’t have picked up on at least a little by now Kimmie, given how much you’ve been around her, then I don’t think what’s in this letter is complete bullshit. She might have some kind of agenda for you, I don’t know, but… I don’t think she was just using you if she did, or even using you at all. Everything you’ve told me and everything I know tells me it just doesn’t add up that way.”
“You really think so?” Kim asked hesitantly.
“As far as I know Kimmie. I mean, you’ve still got more to tell me, right? But I really doubt there’ll be anything to change my mind.”
Kim nodded slowly, and then looked around. A few moments later she softly said; “Thanks Shego… but… what does that mean then? Why… why is this happening? Why did she leave like this?”
“I don’t know Kimmie. Maybe something major came up and she had to leave to deal with it, or maybe it’s like the letter says and she’s off dealing with things that were building up while she was spending time with you. Who knows?”
Kim nodded and turned, looking around the room with a concerned, slightly sad expression. She’d spent so much time here, learning and growing in ways she could have never imagined. Now it was all gone, and she felt a little hollow and cold inside because of it. After a few long, quiet moments, Kim shook her head, her features growing determined as she pushed all of that aside. Whatever was going on, she was going to get to the bottom of it, and she wasn’t going to let anything stop her, not even her own fears and doubts. If Corscan had been using her, then she was going to show her exactly why you didn’t do that to Kim Possible. If she hadn’t, and was only off taking care of whatever her mysterious “responsibilities” were, Kim intended to give her a big piece of her mind over it at the very least. And if she was in trouble… well, Kim was certainly going to give her a piece of her mind over that too, before or after helping her out, as the case might be.
Turning back to Shego, Kim held out her hand, and after a second’s pause, the older woman handed the letter she was holding back to her. Then Kim reached down and picked up the envelope again, putting the letter back inside before stuffing the whole thing into her inner jacket pocket.
“So, was she right?” Shego asked, and at Kim’s inquiring look elaborated; “Are you going to try and find her anyway?”
“Damn straight.” Kim affirmed in a wry, amused tone. “I’m not going to let her get away with jerking me around if that’s what she was doing, and otherwise… well, do you really think I’d be ok with letting someone I’m close to go off to deal with something on their own if I can help?”
Shego snorted and shook her head. “No, I suppose not. Though the way you’re schizoing on whether you’re going to kiss her or kill her when we find her is pretty funny.”
“Now is not the time to be making jokes at my expense Shego!” Was Kim’s hard response in face of the older woman’s smirking comment, before she raised an eyebrow and dryly added; “And what do you mean when ‘we’ find her anyway?”
“All right, all right, no need to be getting your dander all up there Princess…” Shego answered in an amused and only slightly apologetic tone. “For starters, I’ve still got my own reasons for wanting to talk to her, remember? And, of course… there’s the fact that I’m thinking figuring out whatever we have going on between us is going to be a lot easier if you can figure out what’s going on with you and her too.”
Kim puffed derisively and dismissively said; “I don’t think so Shego. If Corscan has a problem with whatever we end up becoming, then she can kiss my ass, because there’s no way I’d put up with that kind of hypocritical bullshit.”
“Oh really?” Shego said wryly, raising an eyebrow. “And did it ever occur to you that I might be the one that has a ‘problem’ with it?”
“What do you mean Shego?” Kim asked, her eyes widening in surprise.
“Well in all the time we’ve known each other, when exactly did I ever come across as the ‘sharing’ type to you Kimmie?”
“Oh. So you mean… if we were to… then you’d want…”
“Well, what if I did?”
“I don’t know… I mean, it just never crossed my mind… I didn’t even think about it.”
“Oh god, I can’t believe how easy you are Pumpkin!” Shego snorted, her serious air cracking completely as she laughed at Kim’s uncertain expression. Shaking her head and still chuckling, Shego continued; “I don’t give a fuck about anything else so long as I’m getting what I want, and we’ve got a loooong fuckin’ way to go before I’d be thinking about something like that, even if I were so inclined to think that way, so relax Kimmie.”
Much to Shego’s surprise, Kim didn’t fly off the handle again—although for a few seconds it looked like she was going to. Instead, for some unknown reason Kim found her ire quickly turning to amusement as well, and she smiled slyly as she suggestively asked; “Oh really? And what exactly is it you want Shego?”
Refusing to take the bait, Shego just shook her head with a soft snort, smiling as she turned to look at the five pieces of luggage they were standing next to instead, saying; “Well for one thing, to know what’s in these bags here.”
Snorting and shaking her head as well, Kim also turned her gaze toward the bags, responding; “Probably my clothes for one thing.”
“Ahhh… Kimmie? I’m a bit of a clotheshorse myself, but even if I emptied out my entire walk-in closet I’d only have a little more than what it would take to fill five bags this size, and you weren’t even living here. Just how much time do you spend shopping anyway?”
“I said ‘for one thing’ Shego.” Kim answered dryly. “And I actually did have—and needed—a lot of clothes here too. New school clothes for my social training, workout clothes, travel clothes for all seasons, and a lot of casual and dress outfits for going out to different kinds of restaurants and clubs too. Plus all the shoes to go along with them.”
“And why would you need all of that?” Shego asked, moving to the suitcase on the far left-hand side a second after watching Kim doing the same on the right.
“We’d travel all around the world when we went out.” Kim grunted as she hauled the first suitcase on her end out and then set it down on its side. “I mean it only took twenty minutes to get to New York City and less than an hour to get to LA.”
Shego blinked and then shook her head, softly muttering; “I gotta get me a sugar-momma like that…” under her breath before grabbing the first suitcase on her end, sliding it out and around in a broad arc that ended with the bag being tipped over and set down on its side in one smooth, continuous motion, all with far less effort than Kim had put into moving hers.
Opening the suitcase, Shego looked over to Kim a few moments later and said; “I’ve got a lot of what I’m guessing are school clothes here Kimmie, though… it’s kinda hard to tell with some of them.”
Kim glanced over from where she was squatting next to her own open bag, responding; “Yeah, those are my school clothes. All I’ve got are boots and shoes over here.”
Kim closed the suitcase full of footwear and dragged the next one out of line, flipping it on top of the first and opening it up to find it was filled with her going out clothes. On the other end of the remaining unopened bags, Shego grunted half with effort and half surprise, as she actually had to drag the next bag across the floor and set it down with noticeable exertion, despite her considerable strength.
“Damn, what the hell’s in this thing?” Shego asked idly as the heavy bag hit the hardwood floor with a dull thump.
At Shego’s utterance and the sound of the bag hitting the floor, Kim glanced over to her for a second and then quickly returned her attention to the bag in front of her, closing it up before moving to stand behind Shego just as she finished unfolding the big suitcase in front of her.
“Ok, heavy bit’s in here.” Shego said while unzipping the left-hand side divider. Flipping the heavy cloth panel back, Shego exposed a rigid canvas-covered framework inset into the main compartment, dividing it into several smaller ones. Lying diagonally across the top of it was a long, narrow, cloth-wrapped object.
Picking up the bundle, Shego raised an eyebrow as she felt its weight and heft, and then passed it back to Kim while asking; “Is there a particular reason why she’s leaving you a sword, or is she just strange like that?”
Kim’s eyes widened slightly as Shego’s comment reached her a second before her fingers closed around the cloth-wrapped sword, recognizing the familiar weight of it as she took the narrow bundle from the other woman, but she refrained from commenting until she could confirm her suspicions for sure.
While Kim unwrapped the sword behind her, Shego looked at the rest of the things in the compartments beneath where it had rested. She smirked at the dozens of sets of outerwear sports bras, cotton shorts, and white gym socks packed into one relatively small compartment, along with a pair of slightly worn yet mostly new-looking sneakers. Moving on, she quickly checked the contents of a black velvet bag in a thinner compartment on the opposite side, finding a half-dozen rattan Escrima sticks and a single pair of kamagong ones. It was the final broad compartment in the center that gave Shego pause however, for it held over a dozen heavy-looking cloth and Velcro tubes, each one hanging from a series of wooden dowels built into the compartment.
While Shego fingered the thick material, a puzzled expression on her face, Kim was looking at the sword she held, the cloth covering she’d unwrapped it from draped over her shoulder. A faint smile crossed her lips as she ran her fingers over the ebonwood hilt, tracing the delicate gold inlay that ringed it just beneath the stubby, barely functional crossguard, the center point, and just before the fat golden cylinder of the pommel. A moment later, Kim drew the sword, her smile growing as the greenish metal blade chimed with a familiar, distinctive metallic ring as it came free of its beautifully burnished rosewood sheath.
Kim was still smiling and idly rolling the long, straight blade around in lazy circles, the fat golden silk tassel hanging from the pommel trailing along behind it, when Shego asked; “So what the hell are these things anyway?”
Kim flipped her blade down to hold it off to the side of her leg and then turned to see what Shego was talking about.
“Oh, those.” Kim gave a single soft chuckle. “Yeah, that would explain why it was so heavy all right. Those are the weights I wear on my arms and legs while I’m training. I was up to two pounds now, and it looks like Corscan left the three, four, and five pound ones for me too.”
“Ok, makes sense.” Shego looked back over her shoulder. “So what’s with the sword then?”
“This was my favorite sword to use out of all of Corscan’s collection when I was doing blade drills.” Kim gave a soft laugh and grinned as she brought the blade up for Shego to see. “You’d probably like it, see? It’s green.”
Kim certainly didn’t expect the reaction she got from Shego when the pale woman saw the blade. At first Shego looked at it without really paying attention, but then her eyes fixed on the slick green blade and widened in surprise, and she twisted around more to get a better view, only to lose her balance and end up falling to her left, her hastily out thrown arm the only thing that kept her from toppling over completely instead of just thumping onto her shapely behind like she did.
“Holy shit!” Shego’s shocked exclamation echoed hollowly through the big room.
Kim immediately snapped the sword up and over her head, the green blade ringing with a harmonic chime as she twisted into a low, ready crouch in the direction Shego had been looking in, the sword angled down and point outward while she held the sheath vertically in front of her, arm relaxed and slightly bent, ready to block.
“What?” Kim shouted, her eyes raking across the room trying to find what had startled the other woman.
“No way! It can’t be!” Shego said while scrambling up to her feet. “It just can’t be! It has to be a fake!”
“What? What? What?” Kim questioned frantically, darting her gaze towards Shego in confusion before returning to scanning the room.
“That sword!”
“What about it?” Kim asked in annoyance, giving Shego an aggravated look while relaxing her stance, rising from her crouch and lowering the blade as she finally got what Shego was going on about.
“It can’t be… can it?” Shego said more to herself than Kim, her eyes never once leaving the sword.
“If you don’t tell me what the hell you’re going on about right now you’re going to get to see way more of this sword than you’d like Shego!” Kim growled, still angry over the way Shego had scared her.
Unexpectedly, Shego looked at Kim and almost hesitantly asked; “Can I see it?”
“Only if you tell me why the hell you’re so freaked out about it!” Kim snapped.
Shego actually had to give her head a little shake to get a hold of herself before she said; “Ok, you know that movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?”
“Yeah, I took Ron to it when it came out, why?”
“Well you remember the sword called Green Destiny that was in it? That sword wasn’t real, but it was based on an old legend of a sword called Promise of Spring, forged from the heart of a star that fell from the heavens by the hands of a master smith who’s name is lost in the depths of time—and unless this thing is some kind of knockoff, it looks exactly like what Promise of Spring is supposed to look like, and it sounds like it too, according to those stories.”
“Riiiight, and you think this sword is that sword, do you?” At Shego’s eager nod Kim snorted and shook her head. “And how exactly do you know all this anyway? Wait, no, never mind, it’s a green sword, right?”
“No, it’s not because it’s fucking green!” Shego snapped in disgust. “Just because I’m fucking green and I like the color green doesn’t mean I’m fucking obsessed with it! It’s because it’s a part of my heritage and because I know about a dozen fighting styles that originate in China.”
Kim felt a hot flush of embarrassment blossom across her cheeks, and she stammered; “Oh… sorry. I didn’t… wait, what do you mean ‘part of your heritage’?”
Shego shook her head and rolled her eyes to the ceiling for a moment, nearly seething with irritation as she loudly answered; “Hello?” Shego raised her right hand and pointed to her face. “You think I got these features because my parents were blonde-haired, blue-eyed Vikings from Reykjavík? I’m a quarter Chinese on my mother’s side!”
Kim’s flush was more from anger now, and she shouted back; “Hey! I’m sorry I made a thoughtless assumption but there’s no way I could have known that! So back the fuck off, because I’m not going to put up with you biting my head off for it!”
Shego ground her teeth together and let out a long, frustrated sound, her fingers half-curling into claws and tension trembling through her arms and hands, while Kim shifted her weight and lifted the blade of her sword in unconscious response to Shego’s aggressive posture. After several tense moments, Shego closed her eyes and forced herself to relax, taking several slow, deep breaths, visibly calming herself.
Letting her hands fall to her sides, Shego opened her eyes and, in a somewhat calmer tone, said; “All right, all right, I guess you’ve got a point, sorry. But you need to understand that this is a touchy subject for me Princess, for a lot more reasons than you could imagine, so it’s real easy to set me off because of it. About the only way you could have made it worse was to bring up cloning too.”
“Ok, I’m sorry too Shego, just like I said.” After a moment’s pause Kim couldn’t resist adding; “What does cloning have to do with anything?”
“Don’t start with me Possible.” Shego growled harshly in a tone to match the hard stare she shot Kim, and the girl quickly raised her laden hands, holding her palms up as best she could, responding; “Ok, ok, sorry I asked. Hot button topics; got it.”
Shaking her head, Shego looked at the floor off to her left for a moment before turning back to Kim and brusquely asking; “So are you going to let me see it or what?”
After only an instant’s indecision, Kim reversed her grip on the hilt of the sword and offered it to Shego pommel first.
With obvious hesitation now that the moment of truth was here, Shego slowly reached out and took the weapon from Kim, taking two steps back before twisting her wrist and swinging the blade around in an easy circle, a faint hum coming from the greenish metal as she did so. A moment later Shego swept the sword up into a looping figure eight pattern in front of her, the blurring green blade humming as she spun it so fast it would have been invisible if not for the shimmer the light from around her hands gave it.
After a dozen or more passes Shego snapped the sword out and down at an angle off to her right, a slow grin curling her lips as she listened to the resonant harmonic hum coming from the blade as she brought it to a dead stop. A second later Shego brought the blade up before her and began examining it closely, her left hand hovering nearby to provide more light, but never once coming close to touching the metal.
As Shego examined the sword intently, Kim was yet again struck by just how wildly beautiful the woman was with her undulating lime-green energy wafting up from her hands, her pale features showing a look of fascination Kim had never before seen from her, let alone the lively wonder that shone in the depths of her dark green eyes. Kim actually had to give her head a little shake in order to come back to herself after several long moments spent staring as Shego.
“Well, what do you think?”
Shego looked at Kim and answered; “Well, it’s really light, and it seems like it’s stronger than it should be, though you can’t really tell just by swinging it around.” Shego twirled the sword in a fast clockwise circle on her right, snapping it to a stop to make the blade hum resonantly. “It’s got perfect balance, and of course there’s that lovely little chime…” Shego bobbed her head side-to-side a few times, a faintly indecisive look on her face, and then said; “I can’t be sure unless you wanna let me try and cut a phone pole in half with it, but barring that, I’d lay pretty good odds it’s the real thing.”
Shego flipped the sword around, reversing her grip on the hilt, and took a step forward, holding it out to Kim. After she took the sword back, Kim returned it to the sheath, saying; “That’s cool. Hmmm, I wonder if I should keep using it then? I’m guessing it’s probably pretty valuable…”
“D’oy. Priceless more like it.” At Kim’s look Shego added; “I mean priceless in the sense that no one’s ever tried to sell anything like it before, so you can’t really put a price on it. If I was to take a guess, I’d saaaay… well, it was made before China became what we consider China now, so you could probably sell it legally… I’m not as up on legal auctions but… if I had to put a number on it… maybeeee… forty or fifty? Assuming no one came in and dropped a crazy ‘I have more money than sense’ bid on it anyway.”
“Oh wow…” Kim looked at the sword in her hands. “I guess it’s going up on my wall then. No way I could bring myself to use a fifty thousand dollar sword, no matter how spankin’ it is.”
Shego rolled her eyes and shook her head, snorting half in disgust, half in amusement.
“Ahhh… Kimmie? That’s forty or fifty million, not thousand.”
Kim’s head snapped up and she gaped at Shego, feeling slightly lightheaded. “Y-you’re joking, right Shego? This thing’s not really worth f-fifty million dollars, is it?”
“If it’s real it is.”
“Well then there’s no way it’s real!” Kim all but shouted forcefully, an edge of panic in her voice. “It has to be a fake!”
“Well, let’s go find a phone pole and find out then.” Shego responded eagerly with an enthusiastic grin.
“I am not letting you try and cut through a phone pole with a fifty million dollar sword Shego!”
“I thought you said it was fake?” Shego smirked.
“I… well… it… Shego!” Kim rambled in frustration.
“Oh relax Pumpkin. If it’s fake it doesn’t matter, and if it’s real it doesn’t matter either, because obviously your she-mountain of a ‘lover’ wanted you to have it, so it’s not something she couldn’t part with. Just take it and use it however you want; it’s yours now.” Shego snorted and shook her head. “And I can not call her that anymore; it’s just too fuckin’ weird, so whether it ‘fits’ or not, get used to me saying ‘girlfriend,’ because that’s what I’m using from here on out.”
“But Shego, it’s fifty million dollars!” Kim responded franticly.
“Oh come on Princess, like you don’t already have a ridiculous amount of high priced toys? You think all those rides you get come cheap? Or those jetpacks you and the buffoon use? The other high tech gear? Laser lipstick, fiber optic digital electronic lock pick, your cute little ‘Kimminicator’? All that stuff is worth crazy amounts of cash if you keep in mind it’s cutting edge tech and all the R&D that went into it. So yeah, I’ll admit that sword might be the most expensive toy you’ve ever gotten, but if you don’t have a problem using all that other junk, you shouldn’t have a problem with this.”
“Don’t call Ron that!” Kim snapped instinctively, before shaking her head slowly. As freaked out as she was right now, she could still recognize that Shego did have a point, however crazy the situation was. Slowly Kim calmed down, dialing back from the verge of panic to merely being uncomfortable with the situation.
Sighing, Kim pulled the cloth covering for the sword off her shoulder and began wrapping it up again. As she did, she said; “I’ll figure out what to do later.”
“Well, you could always let me keep it for you if you’re not comfortable having it around.”
Kim looked up and gave Shego an exasperated, bone-dry look, one eyebrow raised, and Shego snorted, breaking into a broad grin.
“Hey, can’t blame a girl for trying.” Shego smirked.
“Yes, I can.” Kim muttered dryly, though she was smiling a little when she did.
Stepping over to the suitcase, Kim squatted down and carefully set the sword back into the compartment in the same diagonal position as before. After that she paused, looking up to Shego and asking; “What was in the bag?”
“Escrima sticks. Half-dozen or so rattan and a couple of ironwoods.”
Kim gave a soft snort and smile, turning to zip up the compartment again. After that she unzipped the other side to find her traveling clothes—jackets and pants mainly, along with a few shirts. Zipping it back up, Kim was in the process of folding the suitcase together so she could close it up again when Shego suddenly swore behind her.
“Fucking Christ! What the hell is it with these things?”
“What?” Kim looked over her right shoulder to see Shego turning the last suitcase around with noticeable effort.
“This thing weighs almost as much as that one does!” Shego griped, toppling the bag over with her foot a moment later, the deep thump of its impact on the floor easily felt by Kim through her shoes despite being over six feet away.
While Kim finished closing up the bag in front of her, Shego did the opposite to hers, and had the suitcase opened by the time Kim came over to squat down beside her. Shego unzipped the side closest to her and flipped it open, revealing more of Kim’s going out clothes.
Pausing for a second as she looked the collection over, Shego couldn’t help smiling as she said; “Hmmm, not too bad Kimmie. Your fashion sense actually isn’t nearly as crappy as I thought it was after seeing some of the things you wear while you’re coming after Drakken and me.”
“So what was that, a backhanded compliment or insult there Shego?” Kim said dryly, duck-walking over to the far compartment.
“Hey, even you’ve gotta admit the stuff you usually wear while you’re off saving the world is pretty low on the style front Kimmie.” Shego responded while zipping up the compartment again. The left side of her mouth curled as she added; “Althoooough, I’ve gotta admit that blue silk sheath dress you wore a few months ago was pretty smokin’. You should do upscale undercover more often Princess.”
“Oh really?” Kim half smiled as she opened the compartment on her side. “Well, for your information, I’m more concerned about function over style when I’m out saving the world Shego.”
“Hey, you can do both if you try; just look at me.” Shego grinned.
Kim paused just before pulling back the panel on her side of the suitcase, looking up at Shego and saying; “Until two days ago you’ve worn the same thing for what? Five years at least? That’s not exactly keeping up with fashion there Shego.”
“Hey! My outfit’s a classic!” Shego snapped defensively.
“And yet you changed it.” Kim cocked her head slightly.
“I changed a few details, not the basic design!”
“Awful defensive there Shego.” Kim grinned smugly. “So, you think you might wanna lay off the shots about my fashion sense now, or am I going to have to keep giving as good as I get?”
“Yeah, fine, whatever…” Shego answered dismissively, continuing in a muted grumble; “I was trying to give you a compliment.”
“What was that?” Kim asked as she flipped back the divider in the suitcase to expose several piles of books in the compartment, all neatly done up with cloth ties.
“Nothing. So… books? Why’s she leaving you books?”
Kim glanced at the titles, smiling as The Art of War, The Decline of the Roman Republic, and War as I Knew It jumped out at her.
“Gotta keep up my training, right?”
“The hell is she training you for, World War Three?”
“Among other things.” Kim smirked as she started closing up the section again.
“Seriously?”
“Well no, not specifically, but yeah, tactics, leadership, logistics, social skills, long term planning; the whole package.” Kim gave a straining grunt as she tried to pull the suitcase shut from her awkward position, and Shego reached out a hand and helped flip the side over to her.
“Thanks.” Kim said as she started zipping the bag shut before doing it up. A few moments later she stood up and Shego followed suit, asking; “So, what now?”
“I’m not sure.” Kim checked her watch; it was twelve thirty-six. “I guess I should call Wade before it gets too late.”
“What, like it’s not too late already?”
Kim snorted and grinned as she replied; “You don’t know Wade. He’s an eleven-year-old super-genius with one of the most powerful home computers on the face of the earth right there in his room. I don’t think Wade even does sleep.”
Shego snorted, and Kim pulled out her Kimmunicator only to pause a moment later, lowering it as she looked over to the older woman.
“Ahhh, Shego? You think you could turn that off until I’m done?”
“Hmmm, wha’?” Shego said, puzzled, before following Kim’s gaze down to her brightly glowing hands. “Oh!” Shego looked up with a smirk. “Whassamatter Kimmie? Don’t want your little friends knowing about us?”
“Not until I have a better idea what ‘us’ is, no.” Kim answered honestly, before dryly continuing; “And even when I do, I’m not likely to spring it on them with a casual ‘oh yeah, Shego’s here with me too’ out of left field either.”
Shego just smiled and shook her head gently, dismissing her power and plunging the room into comparative darkness—though in actuality, it was still brightly lit by the moonlight streaming in through the geodesic dome high above.
“Thanks.” Kim said before triggering the direct line to Wade on her Kimmunicator.
“No problem.” Shego teased Kim with the down-to-the-wire return mere moments before the connection went through to Wade, quieting and standing with her arms crossed while she waited for the girl to finish.
“Hey Kim, what’s up?” Wade said as he came on screen, a chocolate chip cookie in one hand and a glass of milk in the other.
“Getting ready for bed Wade?” Kim asked with a smile as she saw that the boy was wearing his blue flannel pajamas.
“Yeah, more or less.” Wade smiled before taking a bite out of his oversized cookie and a drink of milk. After swallowing, he continued; “So I’m guessing you didn’t call me to say goodnight. What’s going on?”
“Well, it’s a little confusing Wade.” Kim started hesitantly. “Corscan… Corscan’s gone. She disappeared.”
“What do you mean, ‘disappeared’?” Wade asked intently, setting his cookie and milk down on the side of his desk.
“I mean she left the CI complex and took everyone with her. The place is completely empty now, except for some office furniture and supplies. The only things she left behind were a letter and some other stuff for me.” Knowing that Wade would ask, and thinking he might need to know for other reasons, Kim went on; “The letter said she had to go away for a while to deal with some sort of mysterious responsibilities of hers, and that she would be back. She also said I wasn’t going to be able to find her, and I shouldn’t get too caught up in it because of that.”
“Heh… obviously she doesn’t know who she’s dealing with.” Wade said smugly, lacing his fingers together and stretching his arms out, cracking his knuckles. A moment later he paused and added; “You do want me to try and find her, right?”
“Please and thank you.” Kim replied. Across from her, Shego had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing, and it took everything Kim had to stop herself from shooting her a look over it.
“You got it Kim.” Wade grinned as he turned his attention to the computer screen on his left and started typing furiously on his keyboard. After a few minutes he looked up and said; “Ok, I’ve hacked into a few monitoring satellites, let’s see what we have here…” a few moments later he continued; “Well, it looks like you’re right Kim. There are no signs of activity at the CI complex as far as I can tell, and the residual heat and electrical activity is nonexistent. Unless there’s a shielded area, the entire place looks abandoned. I don’t see anything out of the ordinary in the surrounding area either.”
Wade returned his full attention to Kim once more and continued; “That’s the best I can do for now Kim. It’ll take me a while to find which satellites passed overhead since you saw her last and then backtrack to their data stores so I can get the last few days’ images. I’ll also start running traces on financial activity and hack into the company’s internal records to see what I can find there. I should have something solid for you by the time you’re done with school tomorrow, if not sooner, assuming I get lucky.”
“Ok, thanks a lot Wade. Oh, and the last time I saw her was Thursday, not Friday, just so you know.”
“Got it.”
“I guess I’ll talk to you tomorrow then. G’night.” Kim said.
“G’night Kim.” Wade answered. At the last minute, just before he broke the connection, he smiled reassuringly and added; “And don’t worry Kim; it’s only a matter of time before I find her, trust me.”
Kim looked at the black screen for a moment after the image had collapsed in on itself and the tiny white dot had faded away, smiling softly as she did. Then she looked up while putting the Kimmunicator away, saying; “There we go Shego, we’ll have some answers by tomorrow.”
“Oh really? And you’re sure about that, are you?” Shego replied, a pale specter of contrasting dark and light as she stood in the moonlight.
“What do you mean?”
“You really think he’s going to be able to come through for us in less than a day?”
“Of course. Wade’s the best.”
“Then why haven’t you come knocking on Drakken’s door?”
“What are you talking about?” Kim asked, confused and a little exasperated.
“Well, he broke himself out of prison months ago, and I assume that between us trying to nab Nakasumi and you and me butting heads at the Bermuda Triangle Club, you’d kinda, y’know, want to stop whatever wack plan he’s got going on and all, but yet, I don’t seem to recall you showing up at our front door like you usually do. Now why is that?”
“Oh, well… I guess…” Kim trailed off, and Shego prodded her along with an inquisitive hum. “Ok, it’s because we have no idea where he is right now, all right? Are you happy? What does that have to do with anything anyway?”
“Well, for one thing, because your girlfriend seems to be a whole lot more on the ball than Drakken is, so if you can’t find him easily, I’m guessing you’re not going to find her easily either, right? And for another, well… you needed to have that in mind so that if I’m right, you don’t get as bent out of shape over it as you would otherwise when you don’t get your answers right away.”
“Oh… well… ummm, thanks? I guess.” Kim replied a little self-consciously. A second later she added; “So, what? You don’t think we can find her then?”
“If I thought that I wouldn’t waste the effort. I’m just saying that we need to keep things in perspective, and I know how hard it would be to find me if I went to ground. Nothing I’ve seen from Herculina so far suggests this is going to be any easier, so it’s going to require some real effort on our parts, right? Or ahhh, to be more precise, on the parts of your little friend and me.”
“Oh, and what am I supposed to be, chopped liver?” Kim responded testily.
“You’re supposed to be the globe-trotting, world-famous teen hero that can’t deal with the kinds of people big, bad super villains like me can deal with without a whole lot of extra trouble.” Shego replied wryly. “It’s just a fact that I can move in different circles than you can Kimmie, and I know people that will deal with me who’d never help you in a million years. Well, not without paying them triple or more for it anyway…”
Kim sighed. “I guess you’re right, but I’ve never been very good at waiting while other people are doing stuff.”
“Well get used to it Pumpkin, because that’s what this is going to be a whole lot of unless we get a lucky break.”
Kim just shook her head and asked; “So what now then?”
“Well, youuuu should probably start lugging this stuff back to the chopper. I’m gonna go take a look around a few parts of this complex before we go. I thought I saw a couple of things when I was here before that didn’t add up, but at the time I had other things on my mind.”
“What, you’re just going to leave me here to do this all by myself?”
“Are you asking for help?” Shego questioned with dry amusement.
“Are you offering?” Kim countered just as dryly.
Shego just smirked and walked over to the suitcase next to Kim, picking it up with only a modest effort. Just before turning to go get the one with the weapons and weights in it as well, Shego gave Kim an amused, teasing smile and murmured; “There, don’t say I never did anything for you Princess.”
Kim watched Shego pick up the second bag with a soft, curling smile of amusement. A second later she shook her head and quickly moved to pick up a pair of bags herself, grunting with effort as she hustled to catch up to the other woman.
As they went out into the corridor, Shego ignited her hands once more in order to light their way, and once Kim’s eyes adjusted to the brightness, she could see how easily Shego was carrying her load. Despite the weight of the heavy bags she held, the new, bigger muscles in Shego’s arms were barely standing out in detail, unlike Kim’s own arms with her lesser load, and she moved as if barely encumbered by the bags she held.
Shaking her head again and smiling to herself, Kim was amused by how little that bothered her. Less than half a year ago she would have been trying to carry all three of the remaining bags while appearing to do so as effortlessly as Shego was, just to prove she could. Apparently being around Corscan so much had helped her out considerably in the acceptance department as well.
It took Kim and Shego over five minutes to get outside and carry the bags all the way back to the helicopter. Once they got there, Shego set hers down and opened the back door before turning to Kim and giving her a sly grin along with a wink, saying; “Back in a flash Kimmie.”
Before Kim could respond, Shego turned and took off back the way they came, sprinting in a dead run that carried her away at a remarkable speed, with only the gleaming trails of lime-green energy streaming from her hands keeping her from vanishing into the night all but instantly.
Kim just shook her head and started loading the luggage into the back of the helicopter. She’d only managed to finish hefting the second of the heavy bags Shego had been carrying for her into the aircraft when she saw Shego’s energy appear off in the distance again, and by the time she heaved one of the lighter bags up and shoved it in with the other two, the older woman had returned, the last suitcase slung over her shoulder and not even breathing hard, let alone sweating.
Grabbing the remaining bag left on the ground, Shego tossed each of them into the helicopter in turn with little effort, swinging the door shut and then turning to look at Kim afterward. A second later she smirked and said; “What? Nothing to say? Not even a dirty look? I guess you are growing up Princess.”
At the look Kim shot her over that, Shego rip-snorted into a short laugh, grinning broadly as she said; “That’s more like the Kimmie we all know and love. I was starting to get worried it might not be as much fun to be around you anymore.”
Raising an eyebrow, Kim grinned wickedly—and with the barest hint of malevolence—saying; “Oh, I’m much more fun to be around now Shego, you just wait and see.”
Shego blinked at the abrupt change in gears, along with the incongruity of what Kim had just implied, still very much unused to—and just a little unsettled by—that attitude coming from the girl she’d only just recently associated with rainbows and puppies—albeit hard-assed rainbows and puppies. Before she could say anything, Kim brushed past her, heading for the complex, idly tossing “So, you said there’s something you wanted to see in here?” over her shoulder as she went.
Shaking her head, Shego turned and caught up to the girl, responding; “Yeah, there was a small section in the center of this place that had some major communications hardware on top of it, all just coincidentally hidden away by the surrounding architecture so you could only see it if you were up on top of it looking down.”
“So what do you think was there then?” Kim asked.
“No idea, that’s why I want to check it out.” Shego replied.
It took about twenty minutes for Shego to figure out how to get to the area she’d seen from outside, with Kim and her passing through two security strongpoints on the way. Once they entered the area through what looked to be a reinforced heavy bulkhead doorway past the second strongpoint, Shego nodded to herself, saying; “Yeah, I’m sure we’re near the place now Kimmie. You ever see what was in here?”
“No, but this is where all the heavy security forces were stationed, I do know that from when I got lost in here once.”
“Heavy security?” Shego inquired intently.
“Yeah; full body armor, helmets, sidearms, close combat gear, and those submachine guns you see on that show Stargate.”
Shego gave a soft whistle and said; “FN P90s, eh? That’s some serious firepower all right. Looks like this is the place to find clues at then… if there are any anyway”
Kim nodded, and the two women spent the next half-hour searching the heavily fortified but completely empty area. Unlike other parts of the complex, every room here was completely bare, with only power sockets and couplings, open connection ports, and less faded spots outlined on the floor to say where equipment had once stood. The only thing of interest the pair found were two large underground rooms labeled “power generation” in yellow-outlined red block lettering on the doors. Each room had several bare spots in it that were about ten feet by six feet in size, all standing next to extremely heavy power couplings that seemed big enough to supply the entire complex.
“Well that’s interesting.” Shego commented with a slightly raised eyebrow upon seeing the setup.
“What?” Kim asked.
“This place reminds me of the power supply rooms in Drakken’s lairs. He uses some kind of miniature nuclear reactor though, and it’s about twice as big as any of these things would have been, though it would have taken about the same amount to power a place this size. I wonder why they were off the grid anyway?”
“Well, I know that they were researching new energy sources for the hover bikes, so I guess it’s no surprise they might have had something like that, but I couldn’t tell you why they were using it. Maybe it was cheaper than getting their power from the electric company like everyone else does?”
“Maybe…” Shego looked pensive. “But the number one reason you stay off the grid is so that no one can tell how much power you’re using. After all, that’s how you kept finding us until Drakken wised up, and it’s how the government and other organizations keep a lookout for suspicious activity too.”
Shego shook her head and then looked at Kim.
“Aside from this and those crazy oversized connection ports running to the gear up on the roof, I don’t think we’re going to find anything else here, but if you wanna keep looking…”
“No, that’s ok Shego. I think you’re right. Besides, I’ve got to get home if I want to get any sleep before school tomorrow.”
“Oh yeah, forgot about that. Well, I suppose we could stay at a hotel over in Macon if you want.”
“Are you… asking me to spend the night with you Shego?” Kim grinned with salacious playfulness, one eyebrow raised suggestively.
After a second staring at the girl, Shego shook her head and dryly responded; “Noooo, no I’m not. And given that I don’t want to have to beat you off with a stick, I guess we’re going back to Middleton then.”
Kim just laughed at Shego’s obvious—if not particularly great—unease over her attitude, following along behind the other woman as they made their way out of the complex. While they walked, Kim watched the way the small strip of Shego’s exposed lower back moved as her hips swayed back and forth, wishing that Shego was wearing something a little less loose than those baggy jeans she was in—something like her usual suit for example—so that she could appreciate the view all the more.
By the time they reached the helicopter though, Kim’s thoughts were turning away from lustful distraction and towards sleep, as it was nearly one fifty, well past her usual bedtime and very close to her late bedtime.
Yawning as they approached the helicopter, Kim asked; “Do you mind if I get some sleep in back on the trip back?”
Shego glanced at Kim, ready to make a crack about not being the girl’s chauffer, when she noticed the faint traces of weariness in Kim’s features. Sighing, Shego responded; “Yeah, sure Princess. I did drag you up here for nothing after all.”
“Well it wasn’t all for nothing Shego.” Kim said as she climbed into the helicopter. “We found out that Corscan left a day before we would have otherwise, if not longer, and I know that the sooner you start looking, the better your chances of finding someone, right?”
“I guess so.” Shego responded as she got into the pilot’s seat and shut the door on her side, dismissing her energy once it was closed.
While Shego strapped herself in and started up the now dimly lit helicopter, Kim carefully climbed into the back section and moved the luggage around so it was all secure and leaving the full-length couch seat that ran along the back wall empty. Sitting down, Kim waited until Shego had taken off before lying down on the seat, finding it surprisingly comfortable and big enough that she barely had to curl up at all to fit.
Shego glanced back as she heard Kim moving around, and a moment later Kim saw her reach over and pick up her bomber jacket from the copilot’s seat, throwing it back to her while saying; “Here, I don’t need you complaining it’s too cold to sleep on the way back.”
Smiling in the darkness, Kim squirmed around a little as she covered her torso and arms with the bulky jacket, curling up again and quickly finding herself growing warm and sleepy with the heavy leather and fleece covering her. With the gentle vibrations of the engine running through her body and the thrum of the rotor serenading her, Kim drifted off to sleep with the soft scent of Shego surrounding her and filling her head.

Note: Well folks, this is the last of the pre-written chapters I’ve got done. Now you’ll have to wait for me to write them as I go, which will take much longer. Two to three weeks each probably. But keep that feedback coming in, because even though it can’t make me write faster, it is the thing that’ll make me keep writing on days where I’d rather be doing something else instead. ;) :p
