“Lover…” Kim responded instinctively, and the comment was so offhandedly out of place and sudden it actually caused Shego to pause, asking; “What?”
“Corscan isn’t my ‘girlfriend,’ she’s my lover.” Kim answered matter-of-factly.
“Oh well excuuuuse me for not being ‘grown up’ and sophisticated enough for you Kimmie!” Shego replied, annoyed sarcasm dripping from her words.
Kim’s eyes flashed for a second before she sighed and surprisingly calmed, answering; “I didn’t mean it like that Shego. I’m not exactly sure what our relationship is, but ‘girlfriend?’ Yeah, whatever we are, that just doesn’t fit, ok?” Kim shook her head sharply, realizing she was heading way off track now and continued; “Anyway, sidetrack’s my bad, but seriously Shego, why do you want to go see Corscan all of a sudden?”
Shego gave an exasperated sigh before shaking her head and making a visible effort to calm herself, realizing that Kim probably didn’t know what she knew.
“Kimmie, your gir— errr, ‘lover,’ controls a multinational company that’s in bed with the US military-industrial complex along with Global freaking Justice, and if that alone wasn’t suspicious enough, also has more layers of security around its information than the CIA and employs top-tier operatives as god damn security guards. On top of that, Herculina is teaching you [The Way], a martial art—no, the martial art—that’s so fucking rare and closely guarded there’s only maybe a couple of dozen people in the world that know it, along with the handful of students they’ve judged worthy. Yeah, considering what happened to me with the whole getting hit by a freaking magic rock from the heavens and getting superpowers and all, I’m willing to put a lot more things down to coincidence than most people are, but even I know something’s up with your woman Kimmie, and I wanna find out what, ok?”
“I hardly think the fact that she has such good security considering the first part of your rant counts Shego, and why the hell should the second? So she knows [The Way], big deal. Why is that so weird?”
Shego shook her head and said; “It is a big deal Kimmie. You have no idea how hard it was for me to track down information on [The Way] after I left Team Go. I spent a fortune pursuing any scrap of information I came across, did dozens of favors for information brokers and fixers chasing down every rumor there was, every free minute I had was devoted to finding out more about [The Way]. It was almost an obsession, and even then it took me over a year just to track down the most well known Master of [The Way] there is. Getting that information almost got me killed two or three times in the process! [The Way] is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the entire world Kimmie! I could get my hands on the god damn US nuclear defense codes easier!”
“Oh… wait, what? You know [The Way] Shego?” Kim asked in surprise.
“No, not really. I’ve managed to get my hands on a few manuscripts and ancient scrolls and tablets that had some hints on them, a few outlines of general techniques and training methods, and I trained with a few lesser Masters that knew a secret or two here and there, but nothing concrete. Those few secrets improved my fighting ability by leaps and bounds—it’s no wonder you were able to take me apart so easily if you’ve been training with someone who actually knows [The Way] Kimmie—but in the end, I had to give up.”
“But why? You said you found a Master, didn’t you?”
“Oh yeah, I found a ‘Master’ all right.” Shego growled, scowling. “Let’s just say that didn’t work out too well and leave it at that Pumpkin. After that little… encounter, I decided I was better off letting it go.” Muttering under her breath, Shego added; “Better off for my health anyway.”
“Ok, ok, so I guess that Corscan knowing [The Way] is a little more impressive than I thought, but still, I hardly think it’s a reason to rush off and interrogate her or whatever the hell it is you wanna do Shego.”
“Oh god…” Shego shook her head and used her right hand to pinch the bridge of her nose for several seconds before looking up again and saying; “Look Kimmie, I know you’re a lot younger than me and all, and that you’re not exactly the best judge of what constitutes ‘normal’ given the things you’re involved in, and I know that you haven’t got nearly as much experience with the ahhh… darker? side of life compared to me—except for the few times you’ve needed to shine a light on it so you could go kick the crap out of it anyway—but still, come on; I know you’re smarter than this!”
Shego began ticking points off on her fingers. “Your Amazon mentor and lover controls a company that does business with the US military-industrial complex along with Global Justice—that, just does not happen under normal circumstances Kimmie, it just doesn’t, ok? The US government is not happy about having to put up with Global Justice operating inside their borders, and if they had any other choice they’d drop kick GJ out of the country so fast your head would spin, all right? So that alone sets off warning bells. Then we have the fact that this autonomous company that shouldn’t be doing business with both those groups at the same time, coincidentally has about as much security as they do. Now let’s just stop and think about that for a minute Kimmie—a private company with as much security as the CIA or GJ; a private company. Whose sole controller just happens to know the rarest martial art on the face of the earth. Oh, and let’s not forget that she also reached out a helping hand to you, the Kim Possible, drawing you into her circle, and apparently into her goddamn bed too for fuck’s sakes. And you don’t think that’s just a little suspicious there Kimmie? Now I’m not saying that I know what her game is, or even that she necessarily has one, but something is up with that woman, and I wanna know what it is, ok?”
As Shego spoke, Kim felt a swell of conflicting emotions rise up in her. The greatest was irritation over Shego’s whole attitude while she was laying out her reasoning, quickly followed by a strange sense of… warmth and pride, when Shego made specific reference to her being “the” Kim Possible. She’d always suspected that although the green-hued woman obviously had a low opinion of her moral choices, Shego had considerable respect for her abilities otherwise, despite combat banter to the contrary, and it felt good to actually have her confirm that suspicion, even if it was in a rather offhanded manner. It was the small, coiling threads of doubt, fear, and suspicion that started rising up in her as Shego talked that were the worst though.
Despite everything she’d experienced with Corscan, and the way she trusted the woman to the point of forming such a close bond with her so quickly, hearing smart, cynical, super villain Shego lay everything out like that was unsettling, because given what she already knew about Corscan, it made sense, as much as she didn’t want it to. There were a lot of things about Corscan that Kim hadn’t given much thought to because she hadn’t particularly cared, but now… now that she was forced to think about it, she didn’t like the implications at all. Because of that, Kim found herself becoming defensive as her reaction solidified, stubbornly choosing confrontation over a more reasoned response.
“Look Shego, I’m not saying you don’t have a point with Corscan being unusual, but considering the kind of people we both deal with on a regular basis, I don’t see how that matters.” Kim’s eyes narrowed. “A point I do see however is, exactly how in the hell do you know so much about her anyway?”
“Oh, well… errr, I ahhh… might have…” Shego stalled, recognizing the look in Kim’s eyes and realizing she was in trouble, before her answer came in a low, unintelligible mumble.
“What was that Shego? I didn’t hear you.” Kim said sharply.
“I said I did a lot of digging into her and that company after you kicked my ass, all right?” Shego shouted before continuing in a lower if no less forceful tone. “And I learned a lot more when I went to have a little talk with her after that.”
“What, you were spying on us? And just what do you mean you went to have a ‘little talk’ with her? When?” Kim grilled Shego just as forcefully, her body tensing and her hands curling into fists.
“Hey! I’d just taken a beating from you that would have hospitalized anyone else, and I was pretty sure you were trying to kill me at the end of it too! So yeah, I damn well went looking for some fucking answers Kimmie! So don’t get all high and mighty on me, because I goddamn well know if the same thing had of happened to you, the first thing you’d have done was call up your little nerdlinger friend to find out what the hell was going on!” Shego shouted back aggressively, her own body tensing as well.
Suddenly on the defensive for real now, Kim gaped and groped for a response, but before she could say anything Shego rolled right over her; “The answers I got only raised a crapload more questions, like what the hell was going on with you, her, and that company, and whether or not they were responsible for your new attitude—I mean hell, for all I knew they were brainwashing you into an assassin or something! So I figured I’d just go straight to the top for my answers. Once I got a look at Herculina in the flesh, it was pretty obvious that she was responsible for your new ass-kicking skills, but I thought I knew what I was doing and confronted her anyway.”
“Needless to say,” Shego continued, scowling, “that didn’t go too well. So after barely managing to get away, I went underground to file all the rust off me and get back into fighting shape, so I could go round two with the both of you, and now here we are.”
Shego stood back and crossed her arms under her breasts, staring at Kim and still scowling.
Despite her instincts pushing her to continue the confrontation, Kim felt the fight bleeding out of her. Shego was right; in her situation Kim would have likely done the exact same thing. Closing her eyes and taking a deep, cleansing breath, Kim bowed her head slightly and released it in a long, controlled sigh, forcing herself to relax. Then she looked up at Shego and said; “Ok Shego, I guess you’re right. I don’t like it, but I’d have probably done the same thing in your shoes.” A second later Kim gave a wry smile and added; “Actually, I’d have probably done a lot worse in your shoes.”
Shego couldn’t help smiling at that, giving a soft snort and raising an eyebrow as she asked; “Oh really?”
“Hey, I’m hardass enough to keep up with you now, aren’t I? I’d hate to see what I’d be like if I were evil too.”
Shego felt a little shiver run down her spine, mostly uneasiness with just a hint of quickly ignored excitement, and she replied; “Yeah, well, let’s not think about that, shall we?” A moment later Shego uncrossed her arms and gently said; “Seriously though Kimmie, how well do you really know her?” Shego twisted her hands and lifted them slightly, palms out to Kim, adding; “I’m not trying to make trouble, I’m just asking you to be honest with yourself and really think about it, ok?”
Kim opened her mouth, and then closed it a few seconds later without making a sound. Internally she was squirming and fidgeting, even if it didn’t show on the outside. She’d spent upwards of thirty hours a week with Corscan for over four months straight now, but… as much as she hated to admit it, although she had gotten to know Corscan really well in some ways, the woman was a complete mystery to Kim in others—not because she was guarded, but rather because Kim had never really thought to ask her anything like that. Now that Shego was asking, Kim had no choice but to recognize that there were serious gaps in her knowledge of Corscan.
“All right Shego,” Kim sighed, “I’ll admit I don’t have those kinds of answers. But I do know Corscan, and she’s never once tried to hide anything from me that I know of. I’ll be the first to admit that she’s definitely not like most other people, but I’m sure you’ll see that there’s nothing weird going on with her. Well, other than the usual weirdness that comes from her just being who she is anyway.” Kim gave a knowing, amused smile. “So if you really want to talk to her then I guess we can, but only if you promise to behave yourself!” Kim finished sharply.
“Me, promise to ‘behave?’ Cha’, right!” Shego snorted derisively.
“Shego.” Kim’s eyes narrowed as she stared at Shego with a hard look.
Shego rolled her eyes and sighed before responding; “Fine, fine, I promise to ‘behave,’ all right? Are you happy now? Jeez!” Kim smiled, nodding, and Shego growled before asking; “So can we go now?”
“What? You seriously want to do this right now?”
“Yeah, that’s what I said, wasn’t it?”
“Shego, it takes nearly two hours to get to CI headquarters in a jet that goes over mach one. Do you have a jet that goes mach one? Because it’s already past nine o’clock now, and I can’t spend all night flying around the country just to satisfy your curiosity; I’ve got school tomorrow!”
Shego rolled her eyes and responded; “No, but I’ve got a crappy hypercombustion engine powered, turbojet boosted black helicopter that I can push to six hundred and fifty if I have to. Couple ‘a hours there, couple back; no problem.”
“Yeah, except that won’t give me enough time for sleep once I get back, since I really doubt you’re gonna be satisfied with a quick ten minute chat or anything, right Shego?”
“So we’ll stay over somewhere along the way then and I’ll drop you off at school tomorrow morning! There, problem solved.”
Kim gave a soft huff of amusement and shook her head. “You’re just not going to let this go, are you? All right, fine, fine, but I’ve got some phone calls I need to make first, ok?”
“Go right ahead Princess; you’re the one on a timetable, not me.” Shego smirked, stepping back to the picnic table and sitting against it, watching Kim nonchalantly while picking up her lemonade bottle and taking another drink.
Snorting, Kim took a few steps away from Shego and dug out her cell phone. After checking her signal strength and finding it to be surprisingly pretty good—unbeknownst to her thanks to there being a cell tower just three hills over from the observatory—Kim called up Monique’s number and hit connect. It was only one and a half rings before her friend answered the call.
“Kim! What’s the sitch girlfriend?”
“Hey Mo, isn’t that my line?”
“Don’t be playin’ with me girl! Did you meet Shego yet? Was she there? Was it a trap? Tell me what’s happening, now!” Monique demanded in a fast barrage of questions.
“Ok, ok, calm down Mo. Yeah, Shego’s here with me now, and it definitely wasn’t a trap.” Kim grinned.
“And? And?”
“Well, we had a little talk, and… came to an… understanding, of sorts. Look, I hate to leave you hanging like this Mo, but I just called to let you know I’m ok and that there’s no need to call out the cavalry, ok?”
“I—” Monique cut off suddenly, and Kim thought she heard a frustrated growl and then a sigh in the background before Monique spoke again. “Ok Kim, but you know I’m waitin’ to hear this, right?”
“Yeah, I know Mo.” Kim chuckled. “I’ll talk to you as soon as I can, all right?”
“You’d better Kim, you’d better. Talk to you soon.”
Kim laughed and replied, “Bye Mo.” before hanging up. Then she quickly called up Corscan’s private number and hit connect. After a dozen rings dumped her into voice-mail, she finally gave up and dialed Hui’s number next. Another dozen rings led her to voice-mail once more, and Kim was frustrated, but this time she left a message telling Hui she was going to be coming down tonight. Then she called Corscan’s line again and left the same message for her too. A moment later Kim paused, looking at her phone, and then checked her own voice-mail, only to find no messages waiting for her.
It was unusual that she couldn’t get through to either of them, but Corscan always let her know if anything was going on that would put her out of touch, so Kim wasn’t worried, aside from the fact that she was going to be dropping by unexpectedly… with Shego. Shaking her head, Kim almost reconsidered, but in the end she decided to keep going. No matter how this played out she might end up annoying someone, but she knew that Shego was far touchier than Corscan was, and she really didn’t want to push her not fifteen minutes into whatever relationship they were forming here.
Kim put her phone away and turned just in time to see Shego finishing up the last of her lemonade.
“Ok Shego, I guess if you really want to do this then I’m ready.”
“What? No call home to let your parents know you’re going to be out all night Kimmie?” Shego smirked as she stood up again.
“No, if you must know, I already told them I didn’t know when I’d be getting back tonight, since I had no idea what this little meeting of ours was going to be about.”
Shego gave a soft nasal huff of amusement and said; “Heh, ok Kimmie, let’s get this show on the road then.”
Kim nodded, turning and starting to head towards Shego’s bike. She’d only taken two steps when there was a sudden flare of green light from Shego’s direction, almost immediately followed by a loud, sharp explosive crack from above. Kim immediately threw herself into a diving roll, coming up facing Shego in a low crouch, ready for anything.
Shego, on the other hand, was standing with her right hand shrouded in a wreath of undulating lime-green energy and hanging forgotten at her side, while she looked up gaping at little pieces of flaming something-or-other that were raining down from midair onto the new grass several yards away from her.
“Shego!” Kim shouted angrily. “What the hell was that for?”
“Hunh, what?” Shego said distractedly, still looking at a spot in midair. “I dunno…”
“Seriously Shego, the hell?” Kim said sharply, standing up and only half relaxing from her readied stance.
Shego shook her head and glanced at Kim before holding up her energy-enshrouded hand, staring at it in confusion. “No, seriously Kimmie, I have no fucking idea what the hell just happened.”
Kim’s brow furrowed at Shego’s bewildered tone, and she straightened, relaxing fully as she accepted that Shego wasn’t messing with her.
“Well, what happened?”
Shego shook her head again and said; “They haven’t put out the garbage cans yet, and I didn’t wanna leave the bottle, so I hucked it into the air and tossed off a high powered bolt to fry it, but… I don’t know… it blew up for some reason.” Shego shook her head once more, still staring at her hand.
“Ummm… I’m just guessing here, but, that’s not what was supposed to happen?”
Shego kept looking at her hand, turning it back and forth and shifting the position of her half-curled fingers, her expression now one of consideration as she answered Kim in a distracted tone. “No, with the level of power I put into it and the way it was focused, it should have slagged the bottle into a carbonized lump. Unless…” Shego held her hand up in front of her face, the aura of power around it seeming to pulse and writhe while thick streamers undulated off of it like smoke. “No… it couldn’t be… could it?”
Kim stood quietly, not wanting to distract Shego since this seemed so important to her. As well, she was oddly fascinated with watching the pale green woman as she stood there lit by her power. Kim never really had the chance to just watch Shego while she was using her powers before, since that usually involved her trying to use them on Kim, and the girl had to admit that the sight was quite enchanting. Shego’s scintillating energy was truly beautiful in its dangerous-looking way, and so was the pretty woman who wielded it.
Despite being fascinated, after a little while Kim couldn’t help hesitantly asking; “Shego? Is something wrong?”
“Hunh? What?” Shego answered, distracted. “No, just gimme a minute here Kimmie.”
Shego turned further away from Kim and brought her other hand up, her power igniting around it as well, and a second later she extended both arms and sent a barrage of lime-green lances of fire streaking out into the night sky. As the energy bolts shot out over the forest far below the overlook, they eventually petered out and lost cohesion about two to three hundred feet away, bursting in nebulous swirls or flares of radiant green light.
Looking at the display intently, Shego twisted her hands slightly and launched another stream of bolts out into the night, this group looking just a little brighter and somehow sharper, and all traveling over three hundred feet before flaring in sharp bursts of energy accompanied by dull fwooshing sounds.
Cocking her head, Shego pondered for a moment. Then she broadened her stance, holding her arms at shoulder height, bent inward with one hand facing down and the other facing up, hovering about six inches apart from one another. A moment later a small ball of pale white-green energy began forming between her hands, and it quickly grew to the size of a large beach ball as Shego spread her arms outward.
Kim recognized the attack after a second; Shego had thrown the same type of energy ball at her during the annual super villain trade show and convention at the tri-city convention center last fall. A few moments later, Kim wasn’t so sure anymore, as she watched Shego… compress, the big ball of energy with her hands somehow, pushing it back down to the size of a baseball once more, while the energy grew slightly darker and more… solid looking.
Kim watched Shego grow and compress her ball of energy over and over again, and every time it was a little bit bigger when she finished pushing it down, and every time it seemed to take a little more effort for Shego to do so, while the energy kept growing darker and darker until it started looking almost like a spherical mass of swirling green-hued liquids. After about twenty seconds, Kim also noticed the energy ball now had a faint white-green aura around it that was giving off small arcs of what looked like green electricity.
At the thirty-second mark, a faint sheen of sweat had risen across Shego’s features, and she had a fixed look of concentration on her face as she continued her efforts. By now the ball was the size of a volleyball at maximum compression, and long arcs of green lighting were constantly licking out from the sharp white-green aura surrounding it.
“Ahhh… Shego? Whaaaat exactly are you doing there?” Kim asked nervously.
Shego grunted and, in a strained tone, responded; “Not… exactly the best time to be… asking questions Princess. This isn’t… easy to do. Takes a lot… of concentration, ok?”
Kim nodded, though Shego didn’t notice, and bit her lip slightly, wondering what the hell Shego was up to. By now the ball was nearly basketball-sized on the compressions, with green arcs of electricity continuously dancing off it like one of those novelty plasma globe lamps you could buy at the mall. Twenty seconds later, Shego’s face was twisted into a snarl of concentration while her arms trembled, wavering in and out slightly as she struggled to hold the now foot-and-a-half wide sphere of crackling energy between her hands. A second or two later Shego growled with effort as she thrust her arms outward, sending the sphere hurtling off into the air like a radiant, globular missile.
The sphere of swirling, multihued green energy and its accompanying sharp white-green corona shot through the sky trailing streamers of bright green electricity, traveling nearly two hundred yards before erupting in a tremendous explosion. A thunderous crack followed immediately by a powerful roar accompanied a boiling cloud of burning green energy shot through with heavy lances of jagged green lighting, the whole of the terrible display blossoming outward nearly fifty feet in every direction, dissipating into a visible green shockwave that continued another fifty feet before it faded out completely. A moment later a powerful blast wave of air roared across the overlook, whipping Kim and Shego’s hair and loose clothing around them for several moments before finally dying down.
Kim blinked several times from the wind, her astonished stare still fixed on the point where the sphere exploded, while Shego did the same—though without the amazement. A second later a broad grin crept across Shego’s face and she raised her arms high before yanking them in tight to her sides in exaltation, elbows bent and hands fisting as she vented a jubilant; “Yesss!”
Shego whooped and hopped up and down a little, almost dancing, while she gleefully exalted; “Ye-ah-ha! Sweet!”
A moment later Kim finally shook her head, snapping out of her dazed state and focusing on Shego’s antics.
“Shego! What the hell was that?” Kim demanded.
Shego grinned as she cheerfully answered; “That, Kimmie, is the strongest blast I know how to make with my powers, and it went twice as far and blew nearly a third bigger than it ever has before. More importantly though, after throwing it I didn’t feel like I was going to throw up or pass out like I usually do. Heh heh…”
“But… what? Are you saying your powers have changed? Gotten stronger?” Kim asked, confused.
“Oh hell yeah Princess,” Shego held up her glowing right hand, smiling wickedly as she looked at it. “It’s gonna take me a while to get the fine tuning down, but I’m definitely channeling my power easier now. That’s why that bottle exploded; I sent too much energy at it. I mean, technically my powers haven’t gotten any stronger per se, it’s just less of an effort for me to call them up now, so doing things I had to really strain and concentrate on before isn’t nearly as hard now.”
“But why? How did this happen Shego? Do things like this usually happen with your powers?”
“Ah, nope. Not usually.” Shego answered, lowering her hand and extinguishing her power, leaving both women in relative darkness once more. “But I’m pretty sure I know how it happened. Y’see Kimmie, my powers give me two kinds of advantages. The obvious one is my ability to summon energy and focus it in different ways to get different results, right?”
Kim nodded, a dim shape moving in the darkness to the other woman, and a moment later Shego continued; “The other advantage is that I’m a little faster and more agile than I should be, considerably stronger, and a hell of a lot tougher, with crazy amounts of endurance and a healing ability that’s not even close to being human.”
“You heal faster than normal?” Kim asked, surprised.
“Faster and better Kimmie. As long as whatever it is doesn’t kill me right away, I can probably survive it and heal perfectly anywhere from twenty to a hundred times faster than normal, depending on what the damage is. That is, assuming complications don’t kill me anyway.” Shego responded, casually wandering towards her motorcycle as she did.
“Complications?” Kim asked while moving towards Shego’s bike herself, fascinated.
“Yeah, like if I were to fall off a cliff out in the middle of nowhere and break every bone in my body, I could theoretically recover as good as new without any medical attention, but I’d starve to death before I did. Or like how if I lose my liver I’ll slowly die from all the poisons building up in my system before I can grow a new one. That kinda stuff.”
“Wait, what? You can grow a new liver?” Kim asked, amazed.
“Well it’s not like I’ve ever done it before, but I’ve had other parts of me go missing and grown them back just fine, so I assume I can—just so long as I get put on dialysis ‘til I do anyway.”
“Wow. But… what does any of that have to do with why your powers are working differently now?”
“I’m not completely sure, but I’m nearly certain it’s because apparently, it’s a two-way street.” At Kim’s grunted “Hunh?” of confusion Shego continued; “Well, I always thought it went one way, right? Because I had the energy, it enhanced my physical condition. However, it looks like my physical condition enhances my energy abilities too.”
“Ahhhh, still not getting it Shego.”
“Well the thing is Kimmie, with my powers I was in better shape than most Olympic athletes, but without them? Yeah, not so much. At best I was only in pretty good shape. But now, now I’m actually in the best shape of my life, and even without my powers I’m in great shape. I’m pretty sure that because of that, I can channel my energy easier now. Two-way street, see? My powers enhance me physically, and my physical ability enhances my powers.”
“Well that’s ferociously unfair.” Kim grumbled. At Shego’s look she elaborated; “You disappear for a month and a half and come back with a new superbuff bod and your powers are better too? I’ve been training for over four months now and aside from getting hard and cut I’ve barely gotten any bigger at all!”
Shego chuckled and responded; “Well, I hate to burst your bubble even more Kimmie, but I’ve only been training for about a month. It took me a week to fully recover from what you did to me, and it took a couple of days to get back on my feet after my run in with Herculina too.”
“A month? Son of a—” Kim looked away from Shego, shaking her head and grumbling. When she looked back a few moments later, her expression was still annoyed, but a second later it shifted to amusement as a sly grin slid across her face.
“She kicked your ass but good, didn’t she?”
“No shit Sherlock.” Shego shot back in an aggravated tone. “At the time I thought I was doing pretty well all things considered. It wasn’t ‘til afterwards that I started to realize she’d only been playing with me. Now that I know she’s a Master of [The Way] it all makes sense though.”
“Ahhh, Shego?” Kim grinned. “I hate to burst your bubble, but Corscan isn’t a Master. She’s a few steps under that according to her.”
“You’re shitting me.”
“Nope, I shit you not.”
“Well I guess that makes a little more sense. From what I’ve seen even if they were holding back, there’s no way a Master would have let me fuck her up that much unless they were a masochist or something.”
“Yeah well—wait! What do you mean ‘fuck her up’ Shego?”
When Shego didn’t immediately answer, instead reaching for her helmet on the handlebar of her motorcycle, Kim grabbed her arm just above the elbow, hard, and harshly demanded; “I said, what do you mean by ‘fuck her up’ Shego?”
“I mean,” Shego growled, yanking her arm free of Kim’s grip, “that I might not have been trying to kill her, but I sure as shit wasn’t using kid gloves either.”
“What? So you… hurt her? Really hurt her?” Kim questioned furiously, her face hard and eyes narrow while her hands clenched into fists.
“I was getting my ass kicked in a fight with someone I didn’t know from Eve, of course I fucking hurt her!” Shego shouted angrily. “On top of which, the bitch was fucking asking for it! And I mean she was literally fucking asking for it, going on and on about how I didn’t stand a chance against her unless I came at her with everything I had! So don’t get all righteous with me Possible, because you’d have done the exact same god damn thing in my place!”
“I would not—” Kim responded furiously before breaking off. “I mean—” Kim’s hands unfolded, her rigid fingers forming slightly trembling claws while her expression twisted to aggravation. “I—” Kim looked down and to the side while venting a muted, exasperated screech of frustration, her tensed arms shuddering violently as she did. A moment later she looked up and raked her fingers back through her hair, holding her head tightly while taking several deep breaths.
As much as she was furious with Shego for hurting someone she cared about so deeply, Kim couldn’t deny the truth of Shego’s words, because that was exactly what Kim had tried to do to Corscan when she was fighting her during their competition. The only reason she hadn’t succeeded was because lacking super powers—unlike Shego—Kim had had no way to get past her superior skill and technique. But she’d still tried, just like Shego—and it hadn’t even been a real fight!
Taking one last deep, cleansing breath, Kim sighed, lowered her hands, and looked at Shego, calmly and contritely saying; “Alright Shego, you’re… you’re right, ok? I know what Corscan’s like, and if she did anything to you like what she did to me, I’m actually surprised you didn’t try and kill her. I’m sorry.”
“You’re damn straight I’m—wait, what? Did you just apologize?” Shego asked, surprised.
“Yeah Shego, but don’t take it the wrong way. I’m sorry I blew up at you, but I’m sure as shit not happy you hurt a woman I care about either. I understand why it happened and I can accept it, but I don’t like it, ok?”
“Ummm… yeah. Ok. Whatever you say Pumpkin.”
After a few moments just staring at each other, Kim finally gave a soft little huff of a sigh and said; “One thing I don’t understand though is why she didn’t tell me anything about it.”
Shego snorted and responded; “Oh yeah, right. Like that would have gone over soooo well. ‘Oh, by the way Kimmie, your archenemy dropped by over the weekend and carved all these nice cauterized slashes into me, wasn’t that nice of her?’ I mean hell; you almost lost it right now just hearing about it way after the fact. Hate to see what you’d have done going off half-cocked in the heat of the moment Princess—and if your woman knows anything about what you’re like, odds are she was thinking the exact same thing.”
“Yeah I guess—wait, ‘cauterized slashes?’ What the hell did you do to her Shego?”
“Snake Style with my energy focused in full cut mode. Like I said, I wasn’t trying to kill her, but I wasn’t playing around either. Even then I was just barely holding my own. I should have known something was up when she stayed so strong for so long after taking all that damage. Damnit!” Shego shook her head, scowling at her oversight.
Kim struggled with her anger and queasy discomfort over Shego having hurt Corscan like that, the muscles in her jaw twitching as she clenched her teeth tightly to keep from saying anything. A few moments later she blinked twice as a sudden thought hit her, the surprise shocking her out of her wrathful state.
“Shego, when exactly did all this happen anyway?”
“Exactly a week after you kicked my ass Kimmie. Errr, wait, no, I went to talk with your lady friend on Saturday, when I knew you wouldn’t be around, so I guess it was eight days if you wanna get picky, why?”
“Well, you say you…” Kim swallowed before continuing, “cut her up pretty bad, right?” Kim waited for Shego’s nod before going on. “Well, I don’t remember seeing anything wrong with Corscan around that time—or any time for that matter. And trust me, I would have noticed a bunch of burns and slash wounds or even scars on Monday, because we went nice and long that night just like we always do after I’m away for the weekend.”
“Oh really?” Shego snorted with an amused smile, but Kim was still too distracted to notice what she’d said even then. Still smiling, Shego continued; “Well, it’s a little impressive, but not particularly surprising Kimmie.”
“Hunh? What do you mean Shego? You say you cut up Corscan pretty bad during your fight, but two days later I don’t find a mark on her—how can that not surprise you? How can you explain that?”
“Ahhh, well, A, you say she’s close to being a Master of [The Way], and B, she’s Bill Gates rich, so yeah, not too surprising at all Kimmie.”
“Ok, how in the hell do those two things have anything to do with each other or what we’re talking about Shego?”
“[The Way] isn’t just about pounding the living hell out of people Kimmie, it’s also learning how to bring your body, mind, and spirit into perfect harmony with one another. Anyone who can hack just the physical training alone learns to control their body at levels close to Eastern Yogi Masters. Y’know, the whole hibernation, stop your own heart, jam a railroad spike through your thigh without feeling anything deal? If you’re actually halfway good at [The Way], it goes beyond even that. There are old legends about Masters of [The Way] fighting on at full strength way past the point where they should have dropped over dead. I remember one where a Master fought his way past the Imperial Guard, and then used his own trailing intestines to strangle the Emperor to death before finally dying from the disemboweling.”
“Ewwww!” Kim’s face twisted in disgust. “I did not need to hear that Shego!”
“Hey, you asked.” Shego responded with an amused little smirk.
“I asked how being rich and close to mastering [The Way] applies to Corscan not being hurt two days after your fight, not to hear horror stories thank you very much!” Kim snapped back.
Shego’s smile broadened and she chuckled softly before answering; “Well Kimmie, if you were paying attention, you might be able to get a clue. You know [The Way], you can get your body to do some crazy stuff, right? Not much of a step to think that could be used to speed up the healing process too. Throw in the fact that she can afford stupid levels of cutting edge medical technology and I’m not too surprised there wasn’t a mark on her. She probably spent the rest of the weekend in a nutrient tank or something like that.”
Shego’s smile twisted into a half-smirk as she remembered the one time she’d spent in a nutrient tank. It wasn’t nearly as pleasant as movies like Star Wars and Starship Troopers made it out to be. Breathing through a mouthpiece for a few days straight sucked, and the oxygenated mixes were even worse from what she’d heard, because you felt like you were drowning for hours before you finally adapted, not to mention having to cough all the solution out of your lungs once they took you out of it. If Corscan had gone through any of that, then it gave Shego at least a little satisfaction over their fight.
As Shego amused herself with those thoughts, Kim pondered the information and Shego’s conjecture herself, nodding reluctantly after a few moments. “Ok Shego, I guess that explains it. Only… what’s a nutrient tank?”
“Oy…” Shego shook her head slightly and rolled her eyes. “Haven’t you ever watched a science fiction movie were they’ve got someone floating in a big tank or tube full of liquid? With or without a breathing line? Well, nowadays that isn’t science fiction if you’ve got enough money Kimmie. I don’t know all the details, but usually the liquid is primarily a nutrient solution that also carries drugs and other compounds to speed up and improve the healing process.”
Kim nodded, and Shego continued; “Now, if we’re done with all of this, we’d better get going. Here, take my helmet.”
As Shego handed Kim her helmet, Kim asked; “Why are you giving this to me?”
“Because out of the two of us I’m the only one that can come through getting her skull cracked open relatively ok?” Shego responded dryly, smiling wryly as she finished.
“Oh, yeah.” Kim said in a half laugh.
As Kim was turning the helmet around and checking out the style before putting it on, Shego hesitated, watching her for several long moments until, just as Kim was about put it on, she said; “Wait.”
Kim looked up to see Shego taking off her heavy bomber jacket, revealing her shirt to be a quarter-sleeve T as she did so. A moment later Shego thrust the jacket towards Kim, saying; “Here, take this too. You’ll freeze to death in that light jacket otherwise.”
Kim raised an eyebrow for a moment before making an exasperated face while giving her head a little shake, saying; “Ahhh, and you won’t in just a t-shirt?”
“Well, less than you, yeah. My powers regulate my body temperature better, so I can take hot and cold conditions easier. Won’t keep me from freezing to death or anything, but it’s enough that I’ll only be a little chilly on a short trip like this.”
Kim just kept looking at Shego intently, measuring her words and making no move to take the jacket. After a few short moments under her gaze Shego growled; “Just take the damn jacket Possible!”
A second later Kim snorted softly and gave a tiny smile, taking the jacket and saying; “All right Shego.”
“That’s better.” Shego grumbled, turning and getting on her bike before flipping up the kickstand and checking over the high performance machine, getting ready to start it up.
Kim’s smile broadened as she turned away from Shego to keep her from seeing it, and after stepping to the rear of the bike, she set Shego’s helmet down on the back of the seat before pulling on the heavy coat. As soon as the worn but well cared for fleece lined leather covered her, the lingering warmth of Shego’s body still carried by the slightly oversized jacket immediately began sinking into her, and Kim couldn’t help but pause, pulling the jacket tighter and deeply inhaling the rich scents of leather and Shego as she did, luxuriating in them for several long moments before finally turning and putting on Shego’s helmet as well.
Once Kim was ready, Shego kick-started her bike, revving the powerful engine a few times before letting it settle into a rumbling purr. Then she looked back at Kim and raised an eyebrow slightly. Kim grinned under her helmet and got onto the bike behind Shego, wrapping her arms around the older woman’s narrow waist and pulling herself into Shego’s strong back.
As soon as Kim was on the bike with her feet up on the rear pegs, Shego carefully pulled off the grass at a well-controlled pace. When the bike went over the curb and thumped down into the parking lot, she sped up considerably, smoothly pulling out of the lot and onto the long, winding road leading back to Middleton. Once Shego was out on the open road, Kim gripped her more tightly as their speed steadily increased until they were flying through the night, the trees to either side of the road blurring past them in a dark smear.
As Kim held herself tight to Shego’s back, she felt the other woman’s warmth everywhere she was pressed against her, and she couldn’t resist resting her head against Shego’s shoulder and closing her eyes, just floating in the strange comfort of the other woman’s presence, while the movements and vibrations of the bike helped gently lull her into a state of relaxed contentment.
This is completely crazy, Kim thought idly, but I just don’t care. It feels too good, and I want to find out where it goes. Heh… if anyone ever told me I’d be crushing on Shego I’d have thought they were nuts—funny how things change. Enemies one day and… well, not sure what we are now, but we can be something more than that for sure, I know we can!
As the bike sped through the night, Kim kept drifting in her happy, carefree state, wishing the moment would never end, that she and Shego could just drive on through the darkness forever, untouched by any of her usual worries or the concerns of the outside world. She knew that wasn’t possible of course, that harsh reality would intrude upon them soon enough, but right now, she was living in the moment, and that’s all that mattered…
