After four straight hours of intense labor and another hour in recovery with her husband, Eddie and Futura, Jessica was resting in her own room. She had sent Jake to the waiting area to retrieve their companions. They had been waiting very patiently, and she didn’t want them to worry. Eddie was now sitting in one of her guest chairs, cradling their oldest daughter. Futura stood cooing over the bassinet that held the youngest girl. Jessica had just finished breast-feeding their son, the smallest and ironically, the oldest of the three. Now he lay against her chest, dribbling milk and sleepily sucking on his fist. He had a shock of bright red hair. Their daughters were blond, already looking just like their father. Their son was a wonderful little surprise who looked exactly like his mommy.
When their new friends arrived, Jessica sat up to greet them. “Hi guys and girls,” she greeted. She sounded tired, but very content. Jake lifted his youngest daughter from her bassinet, and Jessica buzzed for the nurse. Jake handed the infant to Janine. Eddie stood and handed her older sister to Alice.
“Oh Jessie, they’re all so beautiful. What are their names?”
“Well, we’ve just been talking about that. Jake and I were planning to name our daughter after my mother, Chloe. When we found out that we were having twin girls, I named the second child Zoë. That left us needing a name for our son in the last couple days, and we still hadn’t given any of them middle names.”
“Well, our son’s first name is Joseph,” Jake interjected. “So his nickname can be Joey, keeping Jessica’s rhyme scheme. Futura said she wanted to beodmoodmother, not a namesake.”
“Besides, Futura’s not my real name anyway. It’s just a nickname they gave me because your tongues haven’t evolved the musculature to pronounce my true name.”
Jake and Jessica cracked up at their expressions at that little tidbit of information. “And Eddie wants to name his own son Edward Spenser III someday, so his name’s off-limits too. Joseph Jake is just too much alliteration, so Jess came up with a brilliant solution.”
At that moment, a beautiful young Puerto Rican nurse entered. Jessica greeted her in perfect Spanish, telling her that she was ready to announce the children’s names so that they could record them for the birth certificates.
Jake pointed to the baby that Janine held and said “Triplet C, second daughter: Zoë Janine Kong.” Janine’s jaw dropped then her eyes shone with tears of gratitude. She whispered, “I don’t know what to say. I’m so honored.” Jake kissed her on the cheek. “Thank you for all your help, Janine.” Egon shook Jake’s hand, clearly moved by the honor bestowed on the woman he loved. “And congratulations on the engagement you two.”
Everyone looked at Janine and Egon in shock. She chuckled and held up her left hand for them all to see. “You don’t miss anything, do you Jake?” He winked at her and proceeded with the baby roll call. He pointed to the other little girl. “Triplet B, first daughter: Chloe Alice Kong.” Alice smiled and blushed.
“You barely know me.”
“You barely knew us, but you risked your life to save my family anyway. Now our kids will have a constant reminder of the lady who did so much for them.” He smiled warmly at her. “Thank you.”
Finally, Jessica cleared her throat to add her contribution. “And that leaves our son. Naturally, Jake took the easy job of naming our girls.” He smirked and rolled his eyes. “We had two incredible women to thank and two little girls to name, but I had four wonderful, courageous, heroic men to thank and only one son. So after a lot of thought, I’ve decided. Triplet A, first-born son: Joseph Raymond Peter Egon Winston Kong. Screw convention! He’s got six names.”
To express his disapproval over having such a long name, little Joey spit up all over his mother’s hospital gown. “Joey! When you get older, you can call yourself J.R. but for now, your mother has spoken!” They all laughed, and Jake took him from Jessie so she could clean herself off.
“That’s what you get for giving him a name that has initials that spell ‘junior puke’.”
She scowled at him. “They do not! J-R-P-E-W-K spells . . . . . oh shut up!” she laughed. “I’m not renaming him!”
“As well you shouldn’t.” He grinned and handed his son to Ray with a warning, “Watch out. The girls are laid back like me, but this one has his mother’s knack for not holding back on the rudeness when he’s pissed off.”
Jessica chuckled and retorted, “You know, I’d flip you the bird, but that’d only prove you right.”
Ray held little Joey gingerly, while the infant’s other namesakes gathered in close to look down at him. Joey stared up at them with wide, curious eyes. Then he blew a spit bubble, farted, and wailed at the top of his lungs.
Winston’s deep voice resounded in amused laughter. “What is it about kids? We got a better reception at some of those birthday parties, huh Ray?” Ray nodded absently. Joey had stopped crying just as quickly as he’d started. He closed his eyes and went to sleep in Ray’s arms, once again sucking his fist.
“Hey don’t forget to record that in your baby book: Joey’s first fart,” Peter chimed in.
“Don’t be sick Peter,” Egon said.
Not being sure that they’d remember la Ego Egon told Eddie and Jake to keep the jumpsuits as a souvenir. Jake and Eddie told them to keep the dematerializers. Ray said that they could never take something so expensive for just a couple of jumpsuits. “Nonsense,” Eddie replied. “We’re all in a fight for the rights of the living. We should share technology to help further the cause.”
“Well put.” Egon responded with a smile. He had an idea. He took his and Ray’s PKE meters and handed them to Eddie. “Jake seemed to have an excellent grasp of these when we searched the riverfront. He can teach you how to use it. I hope they’ll be useful to you.” Eddie smiled broadly and thanked him.
The nurse then announced that Jessie needed her rest and that everyone but Jake had to leave. They all wished the new parents well. Futura offered to baby-sit as soon as possible then vanished in a burst of light. In this crowd, the only one surprised by the sight was the nurse.
Everyone else left by more conventional means, leaving the Kongs alone with their new little tribe. The room had two beds, so Jake would be spending the night with his wife. He was already bitching about the six weeks he had to wait for sex, so it was a good thing they wouldn’t be in the same bed.
Before they all left, Jessica asked Tom to return the next morning with his camera. He and Eddie were driven back to the Waldorf. Egon and Janine took her car to Brooklyn for the night. Winston dropped Peter off at Dana’s apartment, and then went to Kel’s brownstone. No one was surprised at all that Alice decided to stay with Ray at the firehouse for the night.
When he got back to the hotel, Eddie kicked off his boots and stripped off his souvenir jumpsuit in the doorway of his hotel room. He didn’t even take off the jeans and T-shirt he wore underneath before dropping onto the bed. It had been an exhausting week, and he hadn’t slept more than two hours a night in days. He was almost asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
As he drifted into blissful slumber, he thanked God for his three beautiful godchildren and for sparing the life of his dearest friend’s wife.
