Second Chances III
As the sun shined down unabated in the cloudless Republic City sky, citizens of the city strolled down the sidewalk, passing the establishment of a local rundown restaurant that had recently gone out of business. But behind that exterior was the base of operations for arguably the most powerful gang in the city, the Triple Threat Triad; a legion of Earth, Fire & Waterbenders all working together to control the criminal underworld with an iron, fiery & icy fist.
A singular metal door was the only access point to the Hideout. Mako knew this well as the knocked three times, and was answered by a guard sliding the eye slot open and glaring at him. “Mako…what’s the new poster boy for law & order doin’ here?”
“You know why I’m here.” Mako replied sternly. “Let me in, I wanna talk to Viper.”
The guard laughed at that demand. “Someone’s got his big boy pants on. Maybe some other time, when he ain’t busy.” The guard closed the slot and began to walk away, until he heard even louder poundings on the door. “I SAID he ain’t—!”
THOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!
The door exploded from its hinges, knocking the guard back into the wall and opening the entrance for Mako…and Chief Bei Fong. “I told you we should’ve started with the direct approach.”
As they stepped into the establishment though, the found themselves surrounded by almost a dozen members of the Triad, varying in Bending elements and abilities. “Stop right there, or we’ll bring down this whole building on you, Bei Fong.”
She smirked at that thread as she folded her arms. “Really, you must be strong if you’re able to do that. Then again I could just bring down the section of the building you’re standing in, while keeping my end upright.” The enemy Benders began to waver from her counter-threat, knowing who her mother is and her prowess as an Earth & Metalbender.
“Enough!”
From in front of them, the crowd blocking the exit separated enough to allow their leader, Viper, to enter the kitchen. “Well, if it ain’t Republic City’s Iron Cop. And what makes you grace us with your presence?”
“Last night there was an attack at the Pro-Bending Arena…” She told him. “…An assault involving one Earthbender, and almost 20 Waterbenders.”
“Aww…” Viper responded, feigning sympathy. “Don’t tell me Nuktuk’s been hurt.”
“YOU SLIMY PIECE OF—!”
Lin quickly put up her arm, restraining her Detective as she continued. “We both know that your group has the largest gathering of Waterbenders in Republic City.”
“But ya ain’t got no motive.” Viper responded. “My boys didn’t attack Bolin…but we ain’t shedding tears over him, either.”
“Then how do you know it was Bolin?”
“It’s a big city, but it ain’t that big.” Viper replied. “Word gets ‘round about big fights that go on. Shame too; maybe if he’d stayed with the Triple Threats.”
Mako was boiling over in anger, but he maintained his composure in front of his Chief, who did the same. “You know you mentioned earlier that your gang had no motive for the attack…but they did leave evidence…” She countered. “…Evidence linking several members of the Triad to being there that night. And since you’re also wanted for questioning in your involvement with Varrick, we’re gonna be continuing this discussion at Police HQ.”
An annoyed expression grew on Viper’s face as he scoffed at that proclamation and turned his back. His gang parted to each side to give him an exit. “Boys, why don’t you see these two Law Enforcers out…I got a business to run here.”
“You’re business is with me!”
As Viper disappeared into the back room, Lin gave chase, easily using her Earthbending to create a focused earthquake, causing Viper’s men to stumble and creating a pathway. Mako was right on her tail in the chase, but had the opening quickly closed on him as he was halted by 4 Firebenders. The rest of Viper’s men chased after his Chief.
“You really wanna do this?” Mako asked, stretching into a fighting stance.
“You think you’re hot stuff?” One of them replied. “You’re about to get a real lesson in bending, kid!”
“Trial by Fire!” Another one added.
“Alright…” Mako told them. “…teach me.”
Silence overtook the room as they remained motionless, each of them looking for any sign, any opening that would allow them to strike with little to no retaliation. After moments of waiting, one henchmen finally spots it in Mako’s shoulder twitch. He charged forward, his comrades following closely after him…and Mako’s bait was caught. Taking two steps back, he kneeled down and aimed his hands close to the floor, drawing up his Firebending to create a powerful wall of flames which stunned his attackers. As quick as it was summoned, it disappeared, giving Mako the opening he needed. Forming a fist, he shot a fireball at one disoriented attacker, sending him flying across the counter and taking him out of the fight, lowering the number to 3.
Mako was quickly put on the defensive though, as he dodged a roundhouse kick from one aggressor and block vicious strikes from the other two. Backing up, the Detective quickly scanned his immediate area for anything to use in defense; and found it in the form of a Wok. He grabbed the cooking utensil and put it to quick use, blocking a straight punch with it. As the attacker reeled and shook his hand in pain, Mako followed up with a shot to the gut, and then the nose before backing up. It didn’t finish the job, but it gave him more breathing room. Another attacker pressed forward, and the two began to parry each other’s strikes. Soon, Mako was able to go fully on his attack, launching a flurry of punches that the henchman could barely parry. Faster & faster his fists moved, until they appeared to be on fire. A moment later they would be, as Mako used his Firebending to ignite his fists, causing the enemy Firebender to stumble back, shaking his arms wildly as he tried to put out the flames on his sleeve. Mako used that opening to deliver a Fire-fueled spin kick which immediately floored him. 2 down, 2 to go.
The final two were determined not to end up like their comrades, and attacked in unison. Mako used his agility to avoid their Firebending, but he could feel the heat from their attacks. They were well trained, but still sloppy in their technique. Their movements were telegraphed but their flames still burned fiercely. Reeling back, Mako used a desperation maneuver and fell backwards, causing the two to miss on their flame-fueled haymakers. He then performed a kip-up, jumping back to his feet and hitting them both with a point-blank blast of fire that launched them across the kitchen area. They both crashed into a wall of pots & pans, having them avalanche down on top of them. Mako cautiously examined them; noticing their shirts were burned and their chests singed, but they were still alive, just unconscious.
“If you can’t stand the heat…” He quipped, smirking to himself over the snappy comment before remembering his Chief was chasing Viper. Rushing out through the door he came in, he sprinted down the alleyway until he reached the main street, where he spotted Lin crashing out of the restaurant through a window. A moment later, a truck sped out from around the corner, speeding down the road. A quick glance in the side mirror revealed that Viper was in the passenger’s seat.
“He’s getting away!” Mako said.
“No he’s not.” Lin replied.
Using her Earthbending, she stomped the street in front of her, causing a large pillar of earth to shoot up from the ground; instantly knocking the truck over on its side. With their fugitive incapacitated, the two walked over to make the arrest…until the doors to the back of the truck busted open. A moment later, almost a dozen of Viper’s men flooded out from the vehicle, creating a wall in front of the Triad leader as he jumped atop to tipped truck.
“That’s the problem with you cops, you always wanna do things the hard way!” He raged. “I got the best Earthbenders I could find guarding me, Bei Fong! Even your mother couldn’t take on these numbers herself! But I guess being rock-headed runs in the family.”
Seeing the opposition in front of her, she remained steadfast. “You’re right, my mother did need help at times…”
Just then, the sound of galloping footsteps echoes through the streets…gallops that belonged to a Polar Bear Dog. A moment later Naga would appear from around the corner behind Lin. She stopped short of the police barricade, as her rider leapt high into the sky with a boost of Airbending, before landing right between Lin and Mako with breathtaking grace & force. The Avatar had arrived.
“…guess having friends in high places runs in the family, too.”
“WAIT!!!”
The sound of tires screeching filled the air as a Satomobile followed Korra’s path from around the corner. It pulled up to a stop right next to Naga as the door swung open and Bolin jumped out. Arm still in a sling, he found himself in front of the barricade with no way to walk through; so he resorted to his bending, raising an earth pillar that launched him over and allowed him to land beside his friends, ready to fight.
“NOW Team Avatar is ready to rumble!” He declared.
“Bolin, what are you doing here!?” Mako asked.
“Hey, I didn’t stand on the sidelines for our Pro-Bending match, I’m not doing it now!” He answered.
“But your arm is still in a sling!” Mako argued. “I thought Korra was supposed to—!”
“Long story, tell you later.” Korra interrupted. “Right now, let’s bust up these jerks!”
“Not yet.” Bei Fong chimed in. “Too many civilians…most of them with cameras.”
She narrowed her eyes and turned her gaze as Bolin as camera flashes went off behind him. “Heheh…my adoring public?”
“BOLIN! BE CAREFUL!!!” Ginger cheered from afar. “DON’T GET HIT IN THE FACE, WE HAVE A PHOTO SHOOT SCHEDULED LATER!!!”
“This can go one of two ways, Viper!” Lin told the Triad leader. “You can hop off that truck and be taken into custody at Police Headquarters…or you can resist, and be dragged there unconsciously.”
The options were right in front of Viper. He had 10 of his finest Earthbenders standing in front of him, warriors that could easily apply for Dai Li if they were in Ba Sing Se. But across from them stood Republic City’s top cop, a dozen of her finest men including her newest detective, and the Avatar herself. Viper knew Bei Fong wouldn’t hold back in a Bender brawl, but Korra’s presence could be disastrous for him. So he opted for a safe decision, hoping it would pay off later.
“Well…looks like ya got me. STAND DOWN, BOYS!”
Conceding defeat, the Triad Leader hopped off the truck and placed his hands behind the back of his head, as did his men. Cautiously Bei Fong’s men moved in, taking each one of them in cuffs and moving them over to awaiting police cars. Viper was the last to be taken in as 3 officers escorted him, with Lin looking on, ready for any sign of escape. As he passed by, Mako noticed a smirk on the Triad leader’s face, one that could be construed as confidence. Once Viper was in the back of the car like his men, she turned to her young detective.
“And that is why you go by the book, Mako.” She reminded him, before walking off to join her men on the ride back.
Mako nodded, but his mind was still on Viper’s expression, and what it meant. He almost didn’t notice Asami rushing up to him. “I thought for sure Viper wouldn’t give up without a fight.” She said. “I guess he finally smartened up.”
“Yeah…” Mako responded, a faraway look in in his eyes that didn’t go unnoticed by the heiress.
“You OK?”
“Yeah…I’m fine.” He said, looking back at Asami to reassure her. “Just…thinking something over. I’m glad you got here with backup when you did.”
“Not a problem, bro.” Bolin chimed in. “Team Avatar’s always there when needed.”
He accentuated that statement by putting his arm around Korra, who responded in kind. The good feelings between the four would be broken up however, as a 5th wheel made her presence known again.
“BOLIN!!!”
The Earthbender once more found himself smothered by the arms of his mover star opposite, Ginger. “You were magnificent out there, sweetie! So heroic!”
“But…I didn’t even fight.” Bolin reminded her.
“But those ruffians were so scared of you!” She laid her head on his chest and embraced him, making sure that the cameras would catch this photogenic moment as the other three members of Team Avatar looked on in disbelief; Korra mostly in disgust.
“You know what…I need to get some air.” She said, departing from the group.
The flashing lights blinded Bolin of what was around him, but as they finally ceased he was able to spot Korra disappearing around the corner. Sensing something was wrong with her, he immediately separated himself from Ginger.
“Bolin?”
“Uh, I gotta go.” He told her. “See Pabu…needs to be…groomed…and there’s a special groomer…that I have an…appointment for! Yeah!”
Ginger’s expression was a confused one. “But what about the photos?”
“You can take them for me!” Bolin shouted as he rushed off past his brother and Asami. Realizing that more limelight would be shined on her, Ginger indeed posed for several dozen more photos as the two remaining members of Team Avatar looked on.
“Well…that was strange.” Asami noted.
“Actually, that’s normal for Bolin.” Mako replied as he walked over to his Police motorcycle. “Need a lift?”
“I was just about to ask you the same.” Asami replied; reminding him she had her own Satomobile.
“Oh yeah…right…”
“OK, something from that stand-off earlier is really bothering you.” She surmised. “Tell me.”
He knew she was right, and he wasn’t able to keep it to himself for longer. “This was all a little too easy. I mean, The Triple Threat put up a fight, but I use to work for them. Whenever they sensed the law, they would either move to another location or triple their security. They put up a fight, but…”
“It felt like it was for show?” Asami finished for him.
Mako nodded. “And then Viper’s face, he was grinning; like it was all part of the plan.”
She had seen him like this before, when her company was besieged and almost bankrupt from robbery and he was determined not to let it happen. He felt there was far more to Bolin’s attack and she saw that same determination in his face.
“Well, if that’s the case, we better get to the bottom of it.” She concluded.
“Asami, I can’t let you—!”
“You’re not letting me.” She interrupted. “Bolin’s my friend, too. If not for him, I would’ve never met Varrick and my company would probably be in the ground, so I’m helping. We can swing by my office to pick up some things we might need.”
Mako could only smile and nod as she rushed over to her motor vehicle. “I always did have a problem saying no to you.”“It’s one of the things I like about you.” She responded, climbing into her Satomobile. A moment later, she pulled off from the police scene with Mako hot on her tail as they sped off towards Future Industries.
Harmony Tower still stood as one of the most beautiful monuments of Republic City, even with its additions. Unalaq’s attack on the City caused much of the plant life to come under his control, and the tower was an example of it as gigantic vines still remained wrapped around its metal construction, along with most of the spiritual plant life renewed by keeping the spirit portals open. Korra never had the opportunity to observe how her decision changed the world visually until today, as she stood on the observation deck. As she gazed onto the transformed cityscape below her, she could take comfort that perhaps this decision was the right one.
“It’s beautiful…” She said to herself.
It was a welcome distraction for her, but it didn’t completely take away from the real reason she was up there. “What am I doing…how did I get myself into this?”
“You can blame…my mover…if it helps…”
Turning around, Korra spotted Bolin leaning nonchalantly against the observation deck entrance, with a grin on his face, and his chest heaving. “You…ran all the way up the stairs, didn’t you?” Korra asked.
“Possibly!” Bolin huffed. “And…there’s a good chance…I ran…five blocks…to find you!”
He stumbled forward, almost completely out of breath as Korra caught him before he could fall. “Bolin…”
“Hey…this is the spot…we came to…on our date…”
It didn’t occur to Korra until he said it, but he was right. Even though she didn’t consider it a date, it was one of her best memories of arriving in Republic City. Glancing down at the buildings below her, she immediately recognized the view, even with it being daytime. “Yeah…still amazing.”
“So…is this the part where you break up with me?” Bolin asked.
Korra sighed. “No…I don’t know. I don’t know what to do.”
“Well…what do you want to do?”
It wasn’t an answer that came easy to the Avatar. “Bolin…Bolin, I like you…I just don’t want another disaster.” The Earthbender furrowed his eyebrows as he turned to her. “I mean, I rushed in with Mako because I felt something, and look how that ended up.”
He nodded his head in agreement. “Yeah…”
“Plus, you’re already with Ginger.”
It was then that Bolin stood up on his own as he turned away from Korra. “Yeah, me and Ginger, well…maybe I’m crazy, but I’m getting the feeling she’s just using me to get her name in the paper more.”
Korra had to fight off instinct telling her to confirm Bolin’s suspicions, as Ginger’s actions have all pointed to that revelation. “It’s possible. So you’re saying you don’t like her?”
“…yeah.” Bolin answered. “Even when we kiss, I don’t really feel anything…OK the first time we kissed I felt something, but after that—!” Seeing a slight look of annoyance, Bolin took the best course of action and moved on. “Korra, when I kissed you…what we did last night—!”
“I know.” She interrupted. “I just…I don’t want to make the same mistakes again.” Korra continued. “I don’t want to end up heartbroken…or do anymore heartbreaking.”
Turning back to Korra, he puffed his chest out and held his head high. “Then you can call me Iron Heart.”
He pounded his chest where his heart was twice to show her he meant it…and then rubbed that spot as it throbbed in pain. Korra giggled as she put her arms around the buff mover star and kissed him, as he embraced her.
“You’re not gonna quit, are you?” She asked.
“Blame Toza.” He replied. “He’d bury me if I thought about quitting at anything.”
“Then…how about we just take this slow?” She suggested.
Bolin smiled. “Like an Aardvark Sloth in a heat wave.” They punctuated their newly ignited relationship with another kiss, but a short-lived one as a thunderous blast rattled the area along with their ears. They turned towards the source of the explosion to see a line of smoke rising into the air, coming from familiar building.
“That blast…” Bolin noted.
Korra nodded. “It came from Future Industries.”
