Chapter 295
The ride to the next town was tense. No one knew what to make of the prince allowing the Water Tribe concubine to slap him without repercussions or his claim that she possessed all the gifts of Fire Lady Nini. Fire Lord Soizin was a mortal who had passed but his grandmother Nini was a legend who remained with them. Most people knew not to speak of the rain that fell in the comet’s wake extinguishing fires that would have obliterated their islands or the female silhouette outlined in smoke standing next to Soizin, one hand on his shoulder to guide him and other outstretched ensuring his wrath did not harm his people. It would most certainly make sense for Prince Zuko’s Waterbender, the Avatar’s Waterbender, to possess some type of supernatural power for a mere peasant girl to exert so much control over them; it had not gone unnoticed how the little Avatar silenced himself and took a deferential pose when the Water Tribe girl was near him.The next town erased all of Katara’s negative feelings. It was empty. Nothing remained but three stone figures shaped to form a word in the common language spelling a single phrase, “We. Got. You.” Remembering Qiaolian’s words she was careful not to show her joy in front of the Fire Nation; she would not be the one paying for their anger.
Chu-hua’s group and the one flanking them camped in a circle an hour’s ride outside of the last town ensuring no one could get in or out.
Katara wasn’t surprised when that night, unlike the previous nights, Zuko rolled her beneath him. She had disrespected him in public; she should have known there would be repercussions. She was expecting the worse when he whispered, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I was just so angry about Aunty.”He shifted to look in her eyes, “Those men won’t say anything Katara. They’re afraid of you. I used Fire Lady Nini’s name for a reason.”“You’re relying on ghost stories and superstition to keep me safe?” Katara hissed angrily. She had heard the stories of the ghost who haunted the palace.Zuko quickly corrected her, “No, I am relying on myself to keep you safe. I am relying on their honor as insurance to keep them quiet. The men who are with us are the ones who lost family members. Governor Bong Cha selected them to escort us to our meeting point because they are familiar with the area and can report anything suspicious back to her as they retrieve their family members. Several of them had moved some of their families early enough to be injured in the attack. There was nowhere to put them so they were housed in the upper portion of the comfort rooms. You saved their lives with your ice bridges and treatment during transport.”Zuko tone changed as he continued to correct her assumptions, “Fire Lady Nini is not just a ghost who walks the palace. She is the mother of our national health system and rumored to be the origin of The Painted Lady. She told her son not to contact her when he ran; she would find him. She saw our people suffering under Irohulon’s rule and helped countless people on every island during her journey to locate Kozulon. She is the reason for the success behind his rebellion. The loyalty he received was an extension of the love and gratitude they felt for her. Nini trained healers in every village she went to. Our nation was still poor but as soon as she became Fire Lady she ensured a fully staffed medical clinic was within a day’s walk of each village on every island. As the nation grew more prosperous so did the number of clinics.“Despite being Water Tribe, Fire Lady Nini is still the most beloved Fire Lady among our people. She intervened to save those Agni was allowing to die. When people recover unexpectedly from illness there are those who still thank her. That day when Amayu had me take you away she overheard some of the injured whispering the water had done something to heal them. She tried to convince everyone it was merely the sensation of being surrounded by water and moving that led them to believe the water had done something to them but she could tell not all of them believed her. Not all of those women and children were from the Earth Kingdom. A few of them were pure Fire Nation. Only the poor marry for love and only the poor follow their husbands to war. There were enough of them to know of Nini, Katara.“I only told them the truth and reinforced what they’d seen with their own eyes and been told by their relatives. You saved a part of their family Katara. They will not betray you,” Zuko explained convincingly as he shifted their bodies so she was beside him. He kissed her forehead and whispered, “Go to sleep Katara. It’s been a long day and tomorrow might be worse.”
Katara was woken by Zuko whimpering beside her. His face was twisted and sweat dotted his brow. She gently shook him, “Zuko. Zuko, you’re having a nightmare wake up.”
She placed a hand over his mouth when he became louder and raised her voice to call him, “Zuko! Wake up!”His eyes popped open and her hand fell to the side as he jackknifed into seating position. She barely got out of the way before the sleeping mat and opposite wall of the tent burst into flames.“Zuko!”Katara’s screams and the fire quickly brought the others rushing in. Azula and Chu-hua easily suppressed the flames thrown at them. Katara wasn’t sure which or if both screamed, “What did you do to him?”“Nothing! It was a nightmare,” Katara yelled back at them.Zuko pushed his kinswomen away from Katara and pulled her into his lap. His fingers trembled and he began to mutter what Katara thought was nonsense until Azula laughed and Chu-hua replied in the same unintelligible words before leaving. Unlike Chu-hua, Azula lingered. Zuko often had nightmares as a child, many of them she contributed to but this was the first time he’d woken up throwing fire. The princess waited until her brother settled down to scoff, “Aren’t you a little too old to believe in monsters?”“Fuck you Azula,” he shot back angrily.Azula’s eyes widened. His words shocked her. Zuko cursed her. He rarely cursed anyone. She glared at Katara, at least he didn’t before the Waterbender came around. The princess downplayed her unease by saying, “Now, now brother dear, I know I am far more attractive than this sea slug but that practice was outlawed centuries ago. Besides brother or not, there is no way I’d be caught dead with a loser like you.”Azula left. On her way back to the tent she shared with Mai and Ty Lee she loudly demanded, “One of you Dai Li agents build a crib for the baby. Built the walls thick enough so if he starts screaming we won’t hear it and someone bring him a blankie. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll smother himself with it.”Zuko’s head dropped to his hands when Azula mentioned the word baby. He’d been dreaming of his. His child was alone and afraid in the darkness searching for him and Katara. Just as Zuko was about to reach their son he was swallowed by a whale. He felt the teeth pierce his bones and organs but he continued to struggle. He had to free himself so he could save his child. He was fighting to escape and reach their son when Katara woke him up.Uncle Iroh had often told him that the spirits were like his father - they spoke often but many times the true meaning of their words was hidden behind layers of personality and ego. Luckily it didn’t take much for Zuko to interpret this dream. Whales were the emissary of Kali and also an enemy to the early sailors of the Fire Nation. Only those willing to brave the whales and face them on the sea received the rewards of travel. Knowledge, spices, animals, riches, and exotic women only came to those willing to risk everything to obtain them.Kali had originally deemed him unworthy and took his child from him. Now after doing something to honor the dead she gave him a vision of his child along with one of her emissaries. She was giving him another chance to prove himself worthy of the gift of fatherhood but he would have to fight for it. Zuko glanced over to Katara. He had no doubt she would be his first obstacle. She had repeatedly said she didn’t want to bear his child but he also knew how much she wanted children. He knew if he proved himself to Kali and received her blessing, Katara, his child’s mother, would become his greatest ally.Zuko lifted his head and laid it on Katara’s shoulder and once again wrapped his arms around her. He could hear the earth shifting around them as the Dai Li followed Azula’s orders and built some type of shelter that he knew if he glanced at it from a distance would resemble some type of baby bed.If nothing else Azula was good at inspiring absolute obedience from her followers. Zuko squinted and craned his neck forward to get a better look across the room as the ground in one of the corners seemed to crumble. It stopped once it softened to the consistency of freshly tilled earth. Zuko shifted his left hand so that it rested on Katara’s stomach; it was as if Kali was inviting him to impregnate her. In the Fire Nation couples wishing to have a child surrounded themselves with baby things hoping to entice a person to be from the arms of Kali. Women having difficulty conceiving ate dirt from the most fertile part of their garden; those able to afford it had it imported from the most fruitful fields on the easternmost islands. Someone had softened the soil and he knew without being told that Katara would soon suggest they move the hastily ordered bedroll to that location. One of the female soldiers soon brought two. She had been placed on escort duty for one simple reason. She was pregnant and guilty of the crime of fraternization. She refused to name her child’s father so Mung had sent her away simply to see which of her comrades was panicked by her absence. If none of the males panicked then he would know the father was among the men accompanying her. Normally fraternization among division members was a serious crime punishable by court-martial but due to the unique circumstances at New Ursa, Governor Bong Cha had devised a more suitable punishment for those guilty of that crime - marriage.Marriage was in direction conflict with the fraternization laws which meant that she would be relieved of her duties as a Fire Nation soldier and thus receive no pay until she was able to qualify as a member of New Ursa’s colonial peacekeepers. He had no doubt her would be husband could support her but she’d be unable to send money to her own relatives back home. He also had no doubt Kali was using her to speak to him. In the Fire Nation pregnant women were considered embodiments of the goddess herself. They were asked to stand belly to belly with a friend having difficulty conceiving in hopes the child in her stomach would call a friend from the spirit world to the empty womb. The sheets of all marriage beds were sewn by pregnant women; not the ones in which the first consummation took place but the ones the couple would sleep on night after night until they no longer wished to have children. Even the poor subscribed to some form of this custom. If they were unable to afford a full set of sheets they would ask a pregnant woman to sleep on their bedding or sew a design onto their bedding.Bedding delivered by a woman who’d proven to be fertile while stationed in a barren place was a sign that could not be ignored.Katara rose to take the bedding and ending up standing directly in front of her. A sudden chill came over Zuko as he watched the two of bodies touch as they maneuvered the cumbersome load. He wasn’t sure of her official title or rank but this woman had become one of the Sunshine officers – soldiers who spent their free time caring for the refugee children. If anyone could call a child to Katara it would be her.Zuko thanked her and slipped her four gold coins. The four gold coins should be enough to take care of her family until she had returned to a condition suitable to work. He and Katara cleaned the room, removing the charred remains of their old bedding and refreshing the water in the depression the Dai Li had left as a makeshift wash basin before lying down.Zuko rested his head against Katara’s shoulder and closed his eyes. He could see their child crying in the darkness waiting to be brought to the light. He angled his head to nuzzle his lips against the skin of her neck. He kissed her gently several times before sucking deeply and making his mark on her. He made his way up to her lips and she rolled over to meet his affections. Amidst the slow tangle of tongues their bodies shifted and their hands began to explore.Katara placed her hand on Zuko’s wrist when his hand slipped beneath her waistband, “We shouldn’t.”After a moment Zuko replied, “I know.”He wrapped his arms around her back hugging her tightly before rolling them over. Their limbs tangled and the light weight sleeping uniforms did very little to hinder the sensation of his crotch grinding against hers. They kissed and rocked until Zuko’s ears were rewarded by the sound of Katara’s quiet moans. This time when he tugged slightly on her waistband she didn’t protest. She lifted her hips allowing him to slide her clothes down. She parted her legs, making room for him as her hands traveled to his sides, over his buttocks helping Zuko push his pants low enough for her ankles to complete the job. His torso landed heavily on her as he kicked his ankles managing to get one free while using his knees to spread her legs farther. Katara arched her back when she felt his hardness between her legs searching for her center and whimpered softly when he pushed into her.Afraid he was hurting her, Zuko forced himself to pause and called her name, “Katara?”She whimpered again in response. Her arms tightened around his shoulders, using him as leverage to lift her hips and pull him deeper. Once he was completely inside her she began to roll her hips beneath him. Zuko’s eyes rolled back in his head and bit his lips fighting the urge grab her hips and thrust. There was nothing he could do to top the sensation of Katara working herself against him. The feel of her phoenix fluttering its wings around his dragon as her whimpers turned into deep moans became too much to ignore. He slowly pushed forward as she rolled her hips upwards. He was rewarded with her heel digging into his inner thighs, nails digging into his back, her teeth bumping against his, the way her body trembled, as a sound he never imagined she would make for him tore through her lips. It was all forgotten the moment she pushed back against him and clamped down. What began as slow movements ended in a frenzied meeting of flesh. The urges simmering beneath their travel induced celibacy came to a rolling boil that left both parties exhausted. They fell asleep waking only to enjoy each other once more as they night gave way to day. They heard the Tsungi horns playing reveille just as they were once more drifting off.Katara swore a curse beneath her breath before groaning, “I hate your people.”Zuko snorted a laugh as he sat up, “I know. Believe me I’m not too fond of them either right now.” Zuko leaned down to kiss her cheek, “The faster you get up the faster you can go back to sleep on Korhi.”
