Hours later after they had finished eating and she had washed Zuko’s semen out of her and was once again lying naked in his arms her mouth formed the words her heart had been pondering since much earlier, “Do you believe them?”
“Do I believe what?” Zuko asked while absently stroking her derriere.
“Do you believe what your mother said about intercourse? That it is a special act between loving couples and nothing should pollute the sanctity of the marriage bed?”
The hand on Katara’s bottom stilled as did the rest of Zuko. He quietly asked, “Do you not believe I love you Katara?”
She shook her head, “People who love other people don’t do what you did to me. They don’t hurt them the way you’ve repeatedly hurt me.”
“I believe them but also know the world we live in isn’t the world she wanted to create. I once asked a person I respect a great deal and whose wisdom I’ve come to rely on what would they do if they had to choose between their morals and protecting a loved one. Their response was what good are morals if you can’t protect a loved one? I know you don’t believe me when I say what I love you, but how many times has the sun risen and I wasn’t holding you? How many nights have passed and I wasn’t there to protect you? When you were in jail I slept in the magistrate’s office. I had four guards sent to the Boiling Rock for attempting to violate and sell you.”
Katara’s eyes widened.
Zuko’s lips twisted into a sad smile, “Where do think I got the idea?”
“When I let you go, I followed you. There are wild animals in the forest Katara, it was dark and you were easy prey. Did you never wonder why none of them approached you? You had hurt me so bad, but I would have hurt worse if I had let something happen to you. The pain I’ve felt these past few days would have been so much worse if I had let those stones hit you. You are smaller. They hit my shoulders, but they would have struck your head. I can’t lose you Katara. If I had to choose between death and a life without you, I think I would rather be dead.”
Zuko brushed her hair away from her face, “I know this isn’t what either of us wanted, but it is what we have. I don’t think I could love you more if I had made a different decision when we were under Ba Sing Se and we were consensually married.”
Katara tilted her head to get a better a look at him, “Why would you? Why would you have chosen differently under Ba Sing Se?”
Zuko adjusted their position so her head was pillowed on his bicep, “I was tired Katara. I was tired of fighting, tired of running, tired of chasing the Avatar. I was simply tired. You offered me a chance to escape; so did Azula. I knew she was a sociopath but she was my sister. All I had wanted for the past three years was to go home. It wasn’t after I got there that I realized that all really I wanted was a safe place to rest.
“I had that in Ba Sing Se – in the home I lived in with Uncle and in the caverns with you. You were the first person to touch my scar with kindness. I’ve never forgotten that feeling. Your fingers were cool and gentle. You had this look on your face that made me believe you could take it away along with every bad thing that had ever happened to me.” Zuko took her left hand in his right and circled the ring he put on it, “I think that was the moment I started to fall in love with you. If I hadn’t followed my sister I think I would have followed you.”
Katara raised her eyebrow skeptically, “Followed us? I thought you were tired of chasing?”
“I was. I am,” Zuko looked around the room before pulling her closer and whispering into her ear, “The Avatar has to learn three foreign elements but he only had two teachers.”
Katara closed her eyes and nodded, misunderstanding him. He would have been following his uncle not her. Toph had already told them she’d asked General Iroh and he agreed to be Aang’s Firebending teacher. She opened them and asked, “If you had joined us, do you think we would have become intimate?”
Zuko chuckled, “If I had joined you, Uncle would already be Fire Lord and as my wife you would be acting Fire Lady. We’d ascend to the throne after he decided he could no longer postpone his dream of running a tea shop. It would most likely be in Ba Sing Se since it’s far enough away he wouldn’t constantly be bothered by me seeking advice on issues of state and government.”
His voice grew pensive, “If I had joined you Katara do you think you could have been happy with me?”
Katara smiled sadly and caressed his cheek before rolling over, “You didn’t join us, so I cannot say.”
Zuko lifted her hair so he was not lying on it. He kissed her shoulder and reached around her to interlace his fingers with hers, “It does not matter if you are unsure. I know that no matter the circumstances, I would fall in love with you.”
Katara told herself it was only because she was naked and covered only by a thin sheet to protect her from the slight chill in the air that she pulled his arms tighter around her and wriggled closer to him.
