Monique blinked a few times while staring at Kim, and then asked; “What’d’ya mean you think you tried to kill Shego? Either you did or you didn’t Kim.”
Kim sniffled, brushing away her tears as she looked back at Monique with watery eyes. “I don’t know Monique. It was all happening so fast and I’m not sure of anything.”
Monique moved up onto the couch with Kim and comforted her friend as best she could. There was a long period of silence while the girl slowly collected herself, but eventually Kim began talking, and the story came out of her in disjoined bits and pieces. The entire story, as much as Kim tried to stop that from happening, as much as she fought tooth and nail to avoid revealing the source of her twisted torment and shame. But Monique was too smart, too perceptive, and too determined to be put off with evasion and doubletalk. She noticed the gaps, questioned the inconsistencies, and Kim found the whole truth coming out under her friend’s persistent questioning.
After it was all over and Kim had finally gotten through her shameful story, she wiped her face and blew her nose noisily before setting aside her latest Kleenex ball and looking at Monique once more.
“So… that’s what happened. Shego was just there being Shego at the worst possible time and we fought and I don’t know if I did what I think I did or if it was just me trying to stop her or not. She fought me harder than she’s ever fought before Mo, and I can’t be sure of anything because of it… but… I think… even if I didn’t do it… part of me wanted to at least, and that… that’s just as bad, isn’t it Mo?”
Monique just shook her head in shocked disbelief. She was having considerable difficulty wrapping her head around everything Kim had told her—despite all of the fantastic revelations the girl had already unloaded on her today. It was just so unbelievable…
“That… that’s just totally fucked up Kim.” Monique finally said. “There’s just no other way to say it.”
“I know Monique! How could I possibly be thinking those kinds of things about Shego? She’s the only reason that Drakken can really manage to do anything and she’s one of my greatest enemies!”
“That might be pretty messed up all right, but I ain’t talkin’ about that girlfriend. I mean what you tried to do to her.” Monique said.
“What?”
“You can’t be tryin’ to do somethin’ like that to someone over something like that Kim! I mean, if you had to put her in the ground to save someone or stop her from doing something bad or something then fine, but this? That’s just totally fucked up Kim! Totally. Fucked. Up.”
Kim just stared at Monique in shock for a three count, and then burst into tears, bawling; “Oh g-god… I kn-know y-you’re r-right Mo! H-how c-could I… I ha— have… d-done that?”
Monique hesitated in surprise for a moment, and then moved closer to Kim, pulling the sobbing girl into a comforting hug and holding her while she cried, rocking her friend back and forth gently. As Monique stroked Kim’s hair softly, telling her in soothing whispers to calm down and that everything would be ok, she felt like a complete and utter asshole for what she’d just done.
Eventually, after a considerable amount of time had passed, Kim finally quieted and, a short while after that, drew back from Monique’s warm, comforting embrace.
“You ok now girlfrien’?” Monique asked softly, resting her left hand on Kim’s shoulder. When Kim nodded with a sniff, Monique continued; “Look, I’m sorry about what I said Kim. It was ferociously harsh an’ I shouldn’t ‘a done that to you. You’ve been through a lot these last few months and I can understand how you could have found yourself doin’ somethin’ like that. Can you forgive me?”
Kim shook her head and tried to talk, but she only managed a hoarse croak. After clearing her throat several times and then blowing her nose vigorously, Kim tried again.
“No. No, there’s nothing to forgive Monique; you were right about everything you said.” Kim smiled shyly. “A good friend will give you advice, but it takes a great friend to tell you what you need to hear no matter how much it might hurt you.”
Monique smiled and shook her head in wry amusement, her bright white teeth gleaming in her dark complexion as she grinned while responding; “Yeah, well, that’s me all right; talk first and think later.” After a long pause, Monique sobered and continued; “Well, here’s another thing you might not wanna hear Kim; you know you’re gonna have to tell Ron about all of this, right?”
“What? No way Monique! Ron would never be able to understand about Shego, not in a million years. I don’t even understand it!”
“Well, I was kinda talkin’ about ‘all of this’ in the general sense there Kim, but it’s good to know where your head’s at. But seriously girlfrien’, he deserves to know what’s going on with you, don’t you think?”
Kim sighed and looked at her lap. “I know Monique, I know. I’ve wanted to tell him for so long now, but I just couldn’t. I was too afraid of what might happen. But I guess now that I’ve told you everything it won’t be quite so hard… but…” Kim looked up at Monique again, her eyes pleading. “Will you be there when I do it Mo? I don’t… I don’t think I can do it on my own.”
“Of course Kim, you couldn’t keep me away if you tried.” Monique grinned.
“Thanks Monique, you’re a good friend. More than I deserve with the way I’ve treated you, that’s for sure.”
“Hey now! I don’t wanna hear none ‘a that kinda talk Kimberly Ann Possible, y’hear me?” Monique said sharply. “You’ve been goin’ through a lotta heavy stuff here Kim, some real deep shit, y’dig? An’ no one could go through all that kinda stuff without a few bumps and bruises along the way. So I don’t wanna hear you puttin’ yourself down just because you turned out to be a normal person just like the rest of us, a’ight? You made a few mistakes, but that’s nothing anyone else wouldn’t have done either if they were in your shoes, so just forget about it, ok?”
“Ok Mo. Thanks.” Kim said with warm appreciation before sobering. “But Mo, there’s one thing though… I meant what I said about Shego. Ron just wouldn’t be able to understand that. So can we just keep it between the two of us? Please?”
Monique sighed and answered; “All right Kim, if that’s what you want. But if you want my opinion, I think you should tell him everything. He’s been your best friend forever girl.”
“I know Mo… I’ll… I’ll think about it, ok? But for now… I’m just not ready, ok?”
“Ok Kim.” Monique answered with a nod of acceptance.
Kim took a deep, cleansing breath and released it in a long, controlled sigh before standing up and digging out her Kimmunicator from her back pocket.
“No time like the present I guess.” Kim said resolutely as she looked at Monique while sitting down again.
“Hang on a sec’ Kim.” Monique said, glancing at the mantle clock. “As much as I’d like you to call Ron over here right now, if you want me around when you tell him, then it’s going to have to wait. My aunt is coming by to check up on me in about an hour or so, and by the time Ron gets here there’d be no way you could tell him everything before she shows up. And girl, that’s not a conversation you want to have while she’s around, trust me on that.”
“Ok Monique, I guess I’ll have to wait then.” Kim said, secretly grateful for the reprieve. “At least it’ll give me some time to figure out what I’m going to say to him and how I’m going to say it. Will we be able to come here tomorrow Mo, or will your aunt still be around then?”
“Well, she’s staying over tonight, but she’ll have to leave for work in the morning, and my parents won’t be home ‘til way after suppertime at least, so if you come over around ten or so that should give us plenty of time to deal with you and Ron, ok?”
“Ok Monique.” Kim said, still happy that she was off the hook for another day. Idly she asked; “So, what do you want to do until your aunt gets here then?”
Monique pondered the question for a few moments, and then with a sly grin she said; “Well, we could always go up to my room and have sex ‘til she gets here.”
“What?” Kim gaped, utterly floored by the casual, nonchalant way Monique had just propositioned her.
“C’mon Kim, don’t tell me you ain’t thought about it.” Monique purred, leaning in and reaching across Kim with her right arm to steady herself on the couch, moving so close her firm breasts were just shy of grazing across Kim’s as she looked her deep in the eyes. “And you’ve got all this wicked deep experience now; c’mon girlfriend, hook a sister up.”
“Wha— no, I never… I mean… I don’t… I can’t…” Kim babbled; her mind still short-circuiting from trying to process what Monique was saying.
“What? You’re not attracted to me? Don’t think I’m hot enough?” Monique’s eyes flashed and narrowed as she pulled away from Kim, her expression twisting to huffy annoyance. “Or is it that you ain’t down with a fine black mamma like myself? Is that it Kim; you don’t like the sisters?”
“What? No! Of course not Mo! I like the sisters just fine! I mean—”
“So it is me then, is it?” Monique growled, cutting Kim off.
“No, of course not Mo! You’re ferociously hot, it’s just… you’re my friend. I can’t… we couldn’t…” Kim pleaded incoherently.
“Well friends help each other out Kim, so why don’t you help a sister out?”
“I… but… you… I don’t… you can’t seriously…”
Kim was still babbling in confusion when Monique’s serious expression suddenly crumbled, the dark-skinned girl breaking into a huge grin and laughing as she snapped her hands up, pointing at Kim with both index fingers while saying; “Hah! Gotcha girlfrien’!”
As Kim sat gaping at Monique yet again, the girl laughed even harder as she continued; “Awwww yeah girl, I had ya goin’ big time! You should have seen the look on your face!”
As Kim’s mind finally caught up with what was going on, she grabbed the pillow next to her and hurled it at her friend while indignantly shrieking; “Mo!”
Monique raised her arm and deflected the incoming missile while laughing even harder at the look on Kim’s face. “Oh yeah, that’s it all right! ‘I like the sisters just fine Mo!’ Bwaahahahaaa! ‘You’re ferociously hot Mo!’ Aaaahahahahaaaa!”
“Monique!” Kim shouted again, extremely annoyed over her friend’s prank.
Monique was laughing so hard now that she lost her balance and slipped off the side of the couch, landing on the floor with a shriek and a thump, but she never once stopped laughing despite the sudden drop. Soon tears were streaming down her face from the mirth flooding through her while she shuddered and began gasping for breath, and even Kim found her mouth slowly curving into a smile over her friend’s antics, despite her best efforts to resist it.
“Oh god— oh god— I can’t— can’t breathe—” Monique gasped between gales of laughter and bouts of frenzied giggling. “I’m gonna— gonna pee!”
“Yeah well, serves you right.” Kim reprimanded Monique grumpily, despite the grin on her face and the chuckle afterwards.
“Ok— ok— breathe Mo. You gotta— hee hee heeeee… gotta breathe girl!” Monique panted to herself between fits of hilarity.
Kim just shook her head and crossed her arms beneath her breasts, leaning back on the couch and watching as her friend slowly, unsteadily regained control of herself. Eventually Monique calmed, and sat with her left arm draped over the couch while she wiped the tears from her face with her right forearm. Then she looked up to see Kim staring down at her with one eyebrow raised testily.
“You done now?” Kim said dryly.
Monique looked up at Kim silently for the span of several heartbeats and then roared; “I like the sisters just fine!” before collapsing into another fit of uproarious laughter that had her literally writhing on the floor and curling up with its relentless, incapacitating power.
Kim just gave an exasperated sigh and shook her head with a wry smile while her friend laughed herself silly at Kim’s expense, chucking over Monique’s antics and laughing herself when Monique cracked her knee against the coffee table with a sharp “Ow!” of pain while she was rolling around on the floor in her fit.
Finally Monique’s laughter began to slow again, until at last, she literally dragged herself up off the floor and onto the couch with only a few giggling bursts here and there. Sitting back with rumpled clothes and frazzled hair, Monique looked at Kim and giggled again, shaking her head slowly.
“Oh come on girl; that was funny an’ you know it.” Monique giggled.
Kim just snorted and shook her head, responding dryly; “Yeah, ok Mo, whatever…” Kim paused for a few moments, watching Monique, and then her eyes flashed with humor while her mouth twisted into a sly grin. “Just be glad I didn’t catch on to what you were pulling there Monique.”
“Oh, an’ why’s that?” Monique asked in an amused tone.
“Oh… nothing much. Just that the best counter to turn the tables on your little prank? Yeah, that would have been for me to have grabbed you and crammed my tongue down your throat in a full-on French, now wouldn’t it Mo?” Kim’s grin twisted wickedly.
Monique’s eyes widened in surprise, and after a few moments she said; “You wouldn’t have…”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. I mean, it’s not like I’m competitive or anything, right Mo?” Kim responded with feigned innocence, pausing a moment before slyly adding; “And I’m a really good kisser now, so you just might have gotten more than you bargained for too.”
Monique sat gaping at her friend in amazement for several moments before slowly shaking her head and smiling ruefully. “Ok, ok, point taken. Mo shouldn’t be playing with fire if Mo doesn’t want to get burned, right? Damn girl, I’ve got a feeling things are going to get a whole lot more interesting with you from now on—an’ that’s sayin’ something considering what it’s been like having you for a friend so far.”
Kim smiled back and both friends enjoyed a laugh before she said; “So what do you really want to do now Miss Casanova?”
Monique snorted, gave a slight shake of her head, and swept her arm out to indicate the piles of Kleenex, snack food wrappers, and pop cans strewn about the area around the couch and coffee table while answering; “Well, you could help me clean up all this mess we’ve made, and then we could go figure out something for supper and get it started I suppose.”
“Much more reasonable.” Kim grinned, standing up and heading for the kitchen. “I’ll go get a garbage bag.”
“Ok.” Monique answered, sliding off the couch to squat down and begin gathering the pop cans she’d knocked onto the floor when she’d hit the coffee table during her fit of laughter.
It only took the two friends ten minutes to collect the garbage and then straighten up the entire living room, but as they were heading into the kitchen to start in on getting supper, both girls heard the familiar chirp of Kim’s Kimmunicator.
“Hang on a sec’ Mo.” Kim said as she ran back into the living room, picking up her Kimmunicator from where she’d left it on an end table next to the couch. Triggering the receive button, Kim saw Wade appear on the screen a few seconds later.
“Hey Wade, what’s up?” Kim said.
“Hey Kim, sorry to interrupt your weekend, but I just got a hit on the site from an anonymous sender using an Internet café in New York City. The sender claims to be an undercover DEA agent, and they say that they overheard the crime boss they’re working for as part of their cover acting as a proxy for Señor Senior Senior, hiring a team of mercenaries to break his son out of prison. The operation is supposed to happen sometime tonight Kim, and the only reason the agent contacted us is that by the time they could manage to contact their superiors, and then have them pass the information along to the proper authorities, it would have been too late to stop it.”
“Señor Senior Senior’s trying to get Junior out of prison, eh? Well, we can’t have that now can we Wade.” Kim said with a wry smile. “Do you have a ride lined up for us yet?”
“Yeah, I knew you’d want to move on this one ASAP Kim, so I set you up with a Global Justice hover jet. Unfortunately, that burned our last marker with GJ. We won’t be able to use them anymore unless you build up some more favors with them Kim… or you’re willing to owe them, as the case may be.” Wade finished apologetically.
“It’s no big Wade, we’ll get by. Can you have Ron meet me at my house as soon as he can get there?”
“Will do Kim. Good luck.”
“Thanks Wade.” Kim smiled at her young friend before she ended the call. Then she turned to see Monique standing a few feet away from her, watching quietly.
“Hey Mo, guess you’ll have to make dinner without me.” Kim apologized.
“Hey, it’s no big girlfriend; you just go get ‘em, y’dig?” Monique grinned, and Kim smiled back at her in return.
“Will do.” Kim said cheerfully, and then added; “Thanks Mo. I’ll see you tomorrow unless something else comes up, ok?”
“Ok Kim, see you tomorrow.” Monique answered, and Kim turned and headed out the front door with a quick, determined stride. Within moments she was getting on her bike and kicking it over, revving the engine a few times before putting her helmet on and turning to wave at Monique where her friend was standing in the doorway watching her.
Monique waved back at Kim with a smile, and after she did, Kim took off up the street in a long catwalk, quickly disappearing from sight. Shaking her head and grinning, Monique murmured; “Man that girl’s crazy.” in an amused tone before going back into the house and shutting the door behind her.
Nearly nine hours later, Monique was dragged out of a sound sleep by an insistent and irritating noise that just wouldn’t go away. She’d been having the strangest dream too; she and Kim were on the couch and she pulled the same prank she had earlier today, only somehow she ended up making out with Kim instead, and then her parents had come home early and caught the two of them in the hot and heavy act. After that it had gotten really weird, with her frantically trying to explain what was going on only to have all of her family tell her “It’s ok, we’re all gay.” Then they’d all somehow ended up in a mountain field in airy sun dresses—even her father and brother—singing The Sound of Music, while below them Kim, Ron, and Rufus used sticks of French bread and exploding banana cream pies to fight off Bonnie, Brick, and several of their nastier “in crowd” cronies who were all dressed in Nazi uniforms.
Monique forced her eyes open as the annoying sound drilled into her head again. Cell phone. That was it; the sound was her cell phone ringing. Monique thrust an arm out from under the covers and slapped her hand around on the night table, knocking over several small objects in the dark as she clumsily searched for the shrilling phone. Eventually Monique found her phone, bringing it to her ear after flipping it open and hitting receive with a reflexive, ingrained skill that belied her drowsy state.
“Megeneh?” Monique mumbled into the phone incoherently.
“Hey Monique, is that you?”
Monique cleared her throat forcefully and tried to think more clearly. “Hunh? Ron, is that you?”
“Yeah Mo, it’s me.” Ron answered.
Monique raised her head and squinted at her alarm clock. Then she dropped back down onto her pillow and growled; “Boy, you’d best have one hell of a good reason to be callin’ me at nearly two in the morning, or you’d better start running now Stoppable, because you’re going to need that head start!”
“Oh ahhh, yeah. Heh heh… is that what time it is Monique? Ahhh, sorry, I just got back and I wasn’t thinking about the time.”
“Just get on with it Ron!” Monique grumbled forcefully.
“Oh, well ahhh… I was just wondering if maaaaybe you might have happened to… y’know, talked to Kim today? Like you were planning to I mean?”
“Yes Ron, I talked to Kim today. Why?”
“Well it’s just that I hadn’t heard from you and Kim seemed… I don’t know, a little different. Maybe. I think.” Ron answered.
“What do you mean, different?” Monique asked, alert now.
“Well, she seemed a lot more like her old self. I think. Sometimes it’s hard to tell with the way she’s been acting now, but I don’t think I was imagining it.”
Monique smiled. “That’s good to hear Ron, real good to hear.”
“So what happened then? Did you find out what’s going on?” Ron asked eagerly.
“Oh I found out a whole lotta things Stoppable, but you ain’t getting’ anything outta me.”
“What? Why not Monique?”
“Well aside from the fact that you called me at two in the morning, the stuff Kim and I talked about isn’t something I can tell you Ron. She’s going to have to do that herself.”
“Awww! C’mon Monique, you can’t do this to me! I’m the one that helped set the whole thing up! I’m the one that’s been going crazy trying to figure this all out! You’ve gotta tell me!”
“I ain’t gotta tell you anything Stoppable, so you’d best be backin’ off, y’dig?” Monique growled threateningly. Then she sighed and silently counted to ten before continuing in a softer tone; “Like I said, this is something Kim needs to be telling you herself, ok Ron?”
Ron made another aggravated sound over the phone and then sighed himself before replying; “All right, all right, I understand Monique—but can you at least tell me if you have any idea how long it’ll take until she does? Or if she’s going to at all? C’mon Mo; ya gotta give me something here! Please!”
“Well, I suppose I could tell you one thing Ron.”
“Yeah? Yeah? What is it Mo?” Ron begged eagerly.
“Don’t be makin’ any plans for tomorrow, ok?”
“Really? Booyeah!” Ron’s excited shout was so loud Monique jerked the phone back from her ear. “You’re the greatest Monique! I never should have doubted you! You rock! Totally, totally rock!”
“Yeah, I’m the greatest all right… but Ron?”
“Yeah Mo? What is it?” Ron asked eagerly.
“If you ever, and I mean eeeever call me again this late at night, you’ll need that bald rat of yours to do exploratory surgery in order to find your phone where I shove it up you, y’dig?” Monique said in an even tone of menace.
“Ahhh… yeah, yeah, I understand completely Monique. Sorry ‘bout that. Really sorry. It’s just that I’ve been so worried and—”
“Ron, I’m hanging up now so I can go back to sleep. Understand?” Monique cut Ron off firmly before he could say anything else.
“Ok Mo, sorry about that, you have a good—” the rest of Ron’s goodbye was cut off by Monique hitting disconnect. Then she turned the ringer off on her phone and closed it before stretching out to put it back in its charger. As soon as she was sure it was in the cradle, Monique scooped her pillows under her chest and head and collapsed back into bed with a sigh, hugging them as she twisted and jerked back and forth, trying to get comfortable once more while grumbling to herself.
“Damn crazy white boy callin’ Mo at two in the morning. Can’t figure out his own damn problems, oh no, he’s gotta come to the sister for help.” Monique’s voice twisted into a high-pitched, squeaky parody. “Oh help me help me wise black mamma; I ain’t knowin’ what to do on my own. Please, please, ya got’s’ta help me because I’ll never figure it out without a sister’s insight!”
“Dumbass crazy cracker…” Monique mumbled as she started to drift off to sleep, but she was grinning broadly as she did.
