Chapter 211
Without hesitation, Katara nodded against his shoulder, “I want our fairy tale to perfectly happy since we can’t.”Zuko smiled, “Every time we went to market your stall would sell out way before mine. Guys would line up to get your attention and try to impress you by buying food they’d end up giving away. You did like enough of them to go out with some of them.”“Your stall would take longer to sell out but it was always more crowded. There were always girls with low cut tops and dresses asking you to help inspect their melons,” Katara added.“Inspect their melons really? You’ve been reading way too many trashy romance scrolls,” Zuko snorted.“Well fine, there were just as many girls flirting with you as there were boys flirting with me,” Katara amended. “We went out with a few of them and some of them actually turned into short lived relationships. One guy tried to prove he was a tough guy by picking a bar fight. I broke up with him after saving his dumb ass and healing him. I left the next guy after he showed up for a date with a basket of dirty laundry for me to wash.”She became defensive when Zuko started laughing when she said that. “What are you laughing at Prince Hot Pants? Your floozies didn’t give you much better luck. The first was one of the spectators from our battle so she knew who you were. She was expecting to date the prince of the Fire Nation not a simple farmer. It didn’t take you long to get rid of her.”“The next,” Katara giggled, “the next was a total whore. Five minutes into your first date she started ripping your clothes off; she completely demolished your new shirt. After a few more weirdoes we learned don’t tell people what village we lived in. We casually dated after the market closed. Our next relationships seemed to work a little better for the both of us. They were nice, respectable and took the time to get to know the real us. We thought we’d finally had a chance at love so we told them where we lived. “We didn’t think it was odd that we lived together. Neither did the villagers or our exes. These two didn’t really like the idea but they liked us enough to put up with it; at least they did for a few months. They realized how close we were and gave us an ultimatum. We had to choose between them and our friendship. We tried but we’d lived together for four years and been best friends for longer than that. We couldn’t give that up.My boyfriend came to my clinic and broke up with me that morning. I pretended like nothing was wrong because I wanted your relationship to work. Your girlfriend broke up with you later that night. You were late for your date and you made the mistake of telling her it was because you were worried about me. You were upset when you got home so did what we normally did when both of us were unhappy. We fought.“After the adrenaline wore off you told me what happened. I started laughing when I realized we were both dumped. You thought I was crazy until you realized I was crying. You hugged me and told me don’t cry. He didn’t deserve me; anyone who didn’t trust me didn’t deserve me. We’d hugged several times over the years, but this hug felt different,” Katara said quietly as she opened her eyes to look at Zuko.“It felt different for me too. I’d always thought you were pretty but just sitting with you under the stars felt right and brought me a sense of peace I’d never known,” Zuko truthfully added.Katara’s voice still contained the fuzziness of sleep but her words were strong when she said, “I kissed you. You froze. I thought I’d made a mistake but you kissed me back. I kissed you again.”“With tongue?” Zuko asked hopefully bringing his face closer to hers. “Yes you horny-goat-lizard, with tongue,” she replied before pressing her lips against his to give him a demonstration. Her voice was husky when broke the kiss to speak, “We spent all night talking, cuddling and kissing.”“The next time I went to market I rented one of the larger spaces at the end so we could set up side by side,” Zuko murmured kissing her gently once more, “Everyone was shocked that I gave up premium market space to flirt with the girl who sold inferior vegetables. They were even more surprised when they realized we left together that day and came back in the same cart a week later.”Katara chimed in, “But they weren’t surprised when my stomach started to rise almost a year later.”Zuko’s breath hitched, “You had my baby?”Katara shook her head, “Babies. We had twins, a boy and girl, a Waterbender and a Firebender. Our daughter had my eyes and your face but our son had my face and your eyes.”“They were perfect. Any child you give me will be perfect, bender, nonbender, boy, or girl. It would have been perfect because it was yours,” Zuko whispered against her forehead.Katara nodded, “Those were the first. Like clockwork I got pregnant every other year and each time had twins; a boy and a girl, a Waterbender and a Firebender. We had ten children total. Five boys. Five girls. Five Waterbenders. Five Firebenders. Our babies were perfectly matched and balanced like us.”“Ten,” Zuko repeated in amazement. He placed his hand over her stomach “I bet our little house was crowded but happy.”“It was happy but we weren’t crowded. The first time I got pregnant our Earthbending neighbors added a room to our house. After I had twins they expanded it. They did that time each time you gave me another set of babies. After the third time our neighbors stopped betting over the sex and if it would be twins. We lived in our own little world and we were so happy. So very incredibly happy,” Katara murmured closing her eyes.“But we can’t live happily ever after yet,” Zuko insisted. “Our parents haven’t met our children.”He continued speaking as Katara adjusted his arm so she could lay her head on his bicep, “Six months after we left our families began searching for us. The war almost started again because your father and Chief Hakoda stormed my homeland thinking we’d kidnapped you.”Katara’s sleepy mumbles were garbled but Zuko thought she said, “That sounds right, Dad is moving heaven and earth to find us. I can endure a bit longer. I just have to be strong for Aang and Sokka. The wendigo is coming.”He dismissed her words as nonsense and began speaking, “They were surprised to learn I was missing as well so they joined forces. They found us in Ba Sing Se. We’d taken our children for an educational visit. Our friends agreed to watch our garden and our animals but only for a month. We convinced the group that had found us to come back with us. It took a while for them to learn our routine but once they learned how to run the farm, the vegetable stalls, take care of our animals and get comfortable with our neighbors but once they did we set off for our homelands.”“Our children had heard stories about the war and the evil deeds of the Fire Nation so they almost passed out when I commandeered the larger Fire Nation ship instead of taking the faster Water Tribe ship like we had planned. We went to the Southern Water Tribe first,” Zuko said in between yawns.“They met Gran-Gran, my parents, and went penguin sledding. They also got their first taste of authentic Southern Water Tribe sea prunes,” Katara slurred as her lips became as heavy as her eyelids.“Yeah then we went to the Fire Nation. They almost had heart attacks when we snuck into the palace. My uncle had retired as Fire Lord and he was playing hide and seek with Azula’s and Lu Ten’s children when he saw us in the secret tunnel. He forgot about finding them and dragged us to his quarters. He kept all twelve of us hidden and swore his most trusted servants to secrecy before allowing them to outfit us.”That night he took us to the dining hall with him. All of the adults were speechless but the children teased him about losing the game. Uncle covered it up and said he’d won, ‘I went looking for my grandchildren. I found them. I am the master of hide and seek I went looking for you sneaky little rascals and found these long lost scamps,” Zuko mumbled as the lack of sleep finally caught up with him.A few unintelligible sentences later after all their children left home to explore the world and others returned to raise their children in the house they grew up in Zuko joined Katara in slumber. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
