April 19, Tuesday
“Aaaah! Monkey!” Ron screamed in terror, pointing to an open area in the upper reaches of the elaborate, demonic-monkey-idol bedecked and vine-covered ruins of the Incan ziggurat that loomed darkly before them, where a shadow seemed to shift menacingly in the fading daylight.
Kim just shook her head with a pained expression and growled; “Yes Ron, there’s monkeys. We’re in the jungles of Peru, about to confront a guy called Monkey Fist and his monkey ninjas in an ancient monkey temple; of course there’s goddamn monkeys!”
“Heh heh… sorry KP, but, y’know… maaaajor monkey issue overdrive here.” Ron said uncomfortably, his eyes darting nervously all over the monkey-themed temple, trying to watch everywhere at once. “How ‘bout I just stay out here and make sure no one sneaks up on us from behind?”
Kim raised her right hand to her face and closed her eyes, digging the tips of her thumb and index finger into either side of her forehead and rubbing hard in tight circular motions. She just couldn’t take this right now; it was too much.
It had been nearly three weeks and six missions since Corscan had told her the terrible truth about the weakness in her fighting ability, and she still hadn’t come close to reconciling with it. It just kept running around in her head and constantly forcing it’s way into her thoughts when she least expected it, let alone when she was actively dwelling on it. On top of that, she’d been having bad dreams off and on once or twice a week since then, a couple of times even full-fledged nightmares, and she couldn’t really remember a thing about them when she woke up, other than that she’d had them. And last but not least, four days ago she’d almost forgotten where she was in a meeting of the yearbook club and started talking to Alex Saffic about things she did not want anyone knowing she knew about now.
The rancid icing on top of the whole rotten cake was all the trouble these dark clouds were causing at home. With her emotions all twisted up in knots and her mom and dad starting to get on her case about the way she was acting because of it—plus the tweebs being their usual obnoxious, infuriating selves—Kim was starting to think of her home as less of a place of sanctuary and more of another thorn in her side. And because of that, she was also feeling guilty about feeling that way towards her family, because she knew it wasn’t really their fault. But she couldn’t bring herself to say anything to them about all the things bothering her; there was just too much risk that talking about any of it might cause all of it to come out into the open, and Kim was terrified of what might happen if her family found out she was Gay, let alone sleeping with a woman eleven years older than her.
That same fear kept her from talking to her closest friends Ron and Monique too; she was almost more frightened over the idea of them finding out than she was of her family doing so. That meant that the only one she had to talk to about these things was Corscan, and that was… not exactly disappointing, but… talking with Corscan didn’t seem to give her the same amount of comfort that talking to her friends and family did.
Corscan was supportive and concerned about what Kim was going through, but she never seemed to give Kim any real direction or answers when they talked about things like that. She’d tell Kim her own beliefs on a subject, and ask Kim how she felt and what she thought about what was bothering her, but she’d never tell her what she thought Kim should do, or try and suggest any solutions to her, other than that Kim needed to figure it out on her own. On top of that, despite being compassionate about it, Corscan flat out refused to let Kim hide behind any kind of sugarcoating or little white lies about what she was going through; she always told her the truth as she saw it and demanded the same from Kim.
And now, as if all of that wasn’t bad enough, on her first serious mission since she’d had that dreadful talk with Corscan, going up against Monkey Fist, one of the most ruthless super villains Kim knew of, here was Ron, pulling the same damn bullshit he always did and wanting her to baby-sit him through it, despite the fact that this was nearly the dozenth time they’d had to deal with monkeys! Kim just couldn’t take Ron yammering on yet again about something so idiotically insignificant as his issues with monkeys—issues that he had supposedly gotten over at least three times now—not when she needed to be focused on the mission.
“No Ron, you can’t wait outside!” Kim snapped. “We need to get in there now and stop Monkey Fist before he finds whatever it is that he’s looking for.”
“But Kiiiiim, there’s just s-hoooo many monkeys here, can’t I just—”
“All right, fine!” Kim shouted, starting to lose what little control of her temper she had left. “If you don’t want to deal with the god damn monkeys then I will! You stop Monkey Fist and I’ll take care of the stupid monkey ninjas while you do! Happy now?”
“What? M-me? Stop Monkey Fist?” Ron stammered.
“Yes you Ron!” Kim seethed, her anger boiling to the surface. “He’s your archenemy god damn it! You’ve beaten Monkey Fist more often than I have, and you’ve beaten him twice on your own! So you take care of him! I’ll run interference on the god damn monkey ninjas!”
“But KP, I can’t—” Ron started before Kim cut him off.
“Enough Ron!” Kim shouted while yanking out her grappling gun. “We don’t have time for this crap! You either go in there and stop Monkey Fist while I take care of the monkey ninjas or you go the fuck home and I’ll goddamn well do it all by myself!”
Ron stood gaping in slack-jawed shock while Kim fired her grappling gun at the upper levels of the ziggurat, embedding the pointed grapnel deep in the old stone of the temple. Before he could recover enough to say anything, she gave him a last angry scowl, tensed her arm, and triggered the retraction, the powerful device yanking her off her feet and pulling her up to the upper reaches of the temple, where she quickly detached the grapnel from the line and disappeared into the shadowy, crumbling entrance to the upper level of the ruin. Ron hesitated for several long moments before he shook his head angrily and, with a look of fixed resolve, entered the main entrance to the temple.
Fifteen minutes later both teens were carefully creeping into the central chamber of the temple, albeit on different levels, while Monkey Fist ranted and gloated in front of a huge triple statue of the Three Wise Monkeys of fable, though the one on the right had it’s hands several feet away from it’s ears, and the hands of the one on the left were several feet to either side of its mouth. Only the center monkey out of the three had its hands in their proper place, over its eyes.
“And now, thanks to my unqualified brilliance, the final piece of the puzzle is in proper position, and I can finally open the one remaining lock and reveal the Mystic Eye of Trinity! Soon absolute insight shall be mine, and then there will be no one on earth able to stand against me! I will become supreme monkey king of the world!”
Monkey Fist broke into gales of laughter that rapidly climbed in pitch, until he was screeching like a monkey as he pressed down on the top of the heavy stone altar in front of him. All around the room, hanging from pillars and carvings or crouched on piles of rubble, black-masked monkey ninjas looked on silently with their shrieking master as the two stone hands of the last stature slowly moved away from its eyes. With a deep rumbling that reverberated throughout the entire room and caused a rain of dust and bits of stone to fall from the walls and high vaulted ceiling, the two hands crept apart until they stopped to either side of the statue’s head with a final heavy thud.
“At last! At last! The Mystic Eye of Trinity and absolute insight is mine!” Monkey Fist jumped on top of the altar and gazed up at the now-revealed upper face of the statue, a dark glee in his eyes as he beheld the third eye carved into the statue’s forehead, the hollow pupil of which held a golden circlet that glimmered faintly in the dim light of the inner temple.
“Ok Ron, you can do this. Kim’s counting on you… and hey, she’s right; you’ve beaten this guy before, you can beat him again; it’s no big.” Ron whispered to himself from where he was hiding behind a nearby pillar, trying to psych himself up.
Taking a deep breath, Ron stepped out from behind the pillar and lifted his grappling gun, firing it at the center of the third eye of the monkey statue. His shot flew true, and the heavy pointed grapnel smashed squarely into the center of the carved eye, cracking the stone and dislodging the circlet held in the carving. The bright golden circle slid down the smooth cable of the grappling line and just a few seconds later was dangling in the crook of Ron’s right elbow.
“Aaaah! What is happening?” Monkey Fist shrieked as the circlet seemed to slide through the air on it’s own, snapping his head around to follow it’s path and spotting Ron standing next to the pillar.
Ron passed the grappling gun over to his left hand and lowered his right arm, letting the circlet slide down to his extended finger before raising his hand and twirling the golden band around lazily. With a smug expression, Ron cocked an eyebrow at Monkey Fist and taunted; “Actually monkey dude, I think you meant to say that the Mystic Eye of Trinity is now mine, right?”
“Ron Stoppable,” Monkey Fist growled, the severe air of his angular features growing even crueler as they hardened, while his dark, narrowed eyes glimmered dangerously. “And I suppose that means your annoying little friend Kim Possible is around here somewhere as well, yes? Well, no matter, neither you nor her will be getting out of here alive; I will have the Mystic Eye of Trinity!”
“Au contraire my good monkey man,” Ron stalled even as he grew increasingly nervous about the monkey ninjas dropping down to the floor and starting to encircle him. “Not only will you not be getting this nifty little circle thingy, but getting out of here is the last thing on my mind.” Under his breath Ron continued; “Come onnnn Kim, where are you already?”
Monkey Fist cocked his head to the side, puzzled, and asked; “What are you babbling on about?”
Ron almost sighed in relief as he saw movement in the upper reaches of the room to his left. He was just able to make out a grim-faced Kim raising her grappling gun and taking aim at a section of the ceiling.
“Oh, not much,” Ron said casually as he gripped the circlet in his fist and triggered his grappling gun to retract. As the device pulled him through the air towards the face of the central monkey statue, he let go just as he was above the raised area in front of the statues, flipping over once as he fell to land in a crouch next to the altar Monkey Fist was standing on. “Just that I’m here to kick your hairy monkey butt! Wha-taaa!” Ron leapt up into the air from his crouch and spun around, lashing out with his right leg and smashing a shocked Monkey Fist’s legs out from under him.
Even as Ron landed lightly on his feet, Monkey Fist tried his best to recover from the surprise of being attacked by Ron of all people and safe-fall onto the hard stone surface of the altar, while the monkey ninjas that had been in the process of surrounding and closing in on Ron were already turning and preparing to rush him from the side and behind.
However, before they began their charge there was a dull chuffing sound and a split second later, Kim’s grapnel buried itself in the center of one of the arch supports holding up the vaulted ceiling. As soon as the grappling line drew taut, Kim swung down into the room with her legs held up at a ninety-degree angle to her body, plowing feet first into the group of monkey ninjas Spider Man style.
After bowling over four or five monkey ninjas and dissipating her forward momentum almost entirely, Kim let go of her grappling gun and quickly flipped over, pulling her limbs in close as she dropped to the floor and gently landing in a low crouch on the uneven stone surface. Once she was on the ground, Kim quickly assessed the remaining simians. The monkey ninjas were swiftly recovering, so Kim wasted no time in continuing her attack.
Springing forward, Kim landed in another crouch before twisting sideways, lifting her right leg and scything it out in a sweeping arc that ended with her foot slamming into the side of a monkey ninja’s head. Then she reversed the direction of her kick and chopped her leg back to the right, slamming her heel into another monkey ninja and sending it spinning to the floor with a dislocated shoulder while she followed through, using the momentum of her kick to spin herself back into her original crouch, only facing back the way she had come.
By now, two of the monkey ninjas she had first knocked down had recovered, though it looked like the others weren’t going to be getting up any time soon, so all that left were about fifteen of the simians, who’s attention was now definitely focused solely on Kim as they formed a loose circle around her.
Kim surged upright as a shrieking monkey ninja sprang towards her, preparing to snap-kick it out of the air, when suddenly she gasped as, at the last possible second, she noticed the killer monkey clutched an extended spear in it’s paws. Wrenching her body into a backwards spin instead, Kim felt the broad, razor-sharp spearhead brush across the heavy fabric covering her right shoulder and open it up like a Ziploc bag.
Kim knew that if it hadn’t been for the changes in her fighting style that training in [The Way] had caused, she would have used one of her usual leaping kicks against the monkey ninja, and if she had, she would either be seriously injured or dead right now.
Continuing her spin, Kim whipped her left leg up, out, and around to catch the monkey ninja with a spinning reverse roundhouse kick that buried her heel in the small of its back, just above the tail, slamming it out of the air to smash hard into two more of its brethren that were encircling her, as well as possibly breaking it’s spine, but Kim wasn’t sure about that—not that she particularly cared at this point, because now she saw that nearly half the monkey ninjas surrounding her were armed with various traditional and very lethal ninja weapons.
Normally Kim wouldn’t have been nearly so merciless with animals, but she considered monkey ninjas to be a special case. They weren’t just acting on instinct, or even training, monkey ninjas were smart, smart enough to take complex orders, cooperate with one another, learn Tai Shing Pek Kwar to a considerable degree of mastery, and apparently, smart enough to use weapons as well.
And the little bastards are vicious too! Kim thought furiously as she pulled her leg back out of the way of a ninja-to strike while simultaneously bending low to avoid a handful of shuriken thrown at the back of her head. Straightening, Kim kicked the sword-wielding simian hard in the head and then snapped her leg up and to the left in order to slam her foot into the chest of another monkey ninja that was leaping towards her in a shrieking but thankfully unarmed attack.
On top of her usual dislike of monkey ninjas, it also didn’t help that Kim was still on a high boil from her earlier meltdown with Ron, and none too happy about finding out Monkey Fist had armed the nasty little creatures as well—it played on all the fears, doubts, and confusion that had arisen within her since she’d forced Corscan to tell her what she knew three weeks ago. All of these factors combined to make Kim far less merciful than she otherwise would have been.
Meanwhile, Ron was having problems of his own fighting Monkey Fist. Unfortunately, the simian-obsessed egomaniac had just barely managed to safe-fall onto the top of the altar instead of taking serious damage, and it had only been a matter of seconds before he was spinning to his feet in a low crouch, lashing out at Ron with one of his lower hands as he did so, forcing the blonde to jump back instead of continuing his attack.
As soon as he was upright once more, Monkey Fist shouted; “You dare attack me?” but before he could launch himself at Ron in a fury, he gasped while his jaw dropped in shock once more as Ron shouted; “Can and do monkey dude!” and leapt back towards him with a jumping snap kick.
Monkey Fist threw himself off the altar just in the nick of time, leaping up to cling to the features of the center monkey statue with his left hands before turning and looking down at Ron with a malevolent glare of pure vehement rage. A second later Monkey Fist pushed off of the statue and spun around gracefully in midair, landing crouched on the near side of the altar just as Ron turned around to face him once more.
This time Monkey Fist didn’t bother talking, he just attacked, launching a barrage of axe hand and palm strikes and kicks with his upper and lower hands, along with several spinning backfists and sweeping kicks as his momentum from other attacks carried him around and into them fluidly.
Ron responded by blocking, leaping over, swaying to the side of, and ducking under the storm of strikes, holding Monkey Fist at bay and maintaining his position on the other side of the altar. He even managed to launch a handful of counterattacks as he defended himself, but for the most part, he was too busy keeping his footing and preventing Monkey Fist from getting a solid hit in on him to really do anything else.
As the two wielders of Mystical Monkey Power dueled on top of the central altar, Kim slammed a left backfist into the hardwood staff of a monkey ninja jumping up to attack her, breaking it in two and knocking the simian out of the air. In a continuous motion Kim took a step forward as it was falling and swept her right elbow up and around in a brutal arc, smashing it into the side of a second monkey ninja leaping in to attack her while she was distracted by the first, shattering several of its ribs and sending it spinning off to bounce along the floor several times before coming to a stop in a crumpled heap.
Twisting her hips so that her broad stance faced the first monkey ninja, Kim swept her right leg forwards like a pendulum and kicked it in the stomach just as it recovered its footing, sending it sailing over the heads of its brethren to land somewhere in the darkness far behind them. As Kim’s leg reached the apex of its forward sweep, she crouched on her left leg while bringing the right straight down in an ax kick, smashing through the shaft of the spear her target tried to block with as well as the creature’s collarbone, slamming it into the floor and unconsciousness.
While Kim pulled her leg back under her, she reached out to either side and picked up the pieces of the staff she had broken, sweeping them around her in a defensive pattern just as the chain of a kusari gama, a thrusting spearhead, and the blade of a ninja-to came in at her from various directions. Kim parried the ninja-to with her right stick, embedding the blade deep into the hardwood, while simultaneously deflecting the spear thrust with her left stick before snapping it up it to catch the kusari gama’s chain as it swept in towards her head.
As the weighted end of the chain wrapped around her left stick in faster and faster circles, Kim jerked the ninja-to attached to her right stick out of the hands of its wielder, tossing both weapons over her shoulder to spin off into the darkness behind her. Once she’d disarmed the sword-wielding monkey ninja, Kim backed away from the spear-wielding simian and yanked hard on the chain wrapped around her left stick, jerking the monkey ninja off its feet and through the air towards her.
As the monkey ninja flew through the air, it tried to recover enough to strike with the blade of its kusari gama, but before it could, Kim swept her right leg up and out to the left side of the flying simian, snapping her heel back in a hook kick that slammed into the side of the monkey ninja, breaking it’s arm and sending it spinning off over the heads of its brethren to land in a sprawl atop a pile of rubble.
Kim swept her leg back down as the monkey ninja flew away from her, grabbing the chain of the kusari gama and jerking the weapon towards her as she did. Kim dropped the chain and caught the shaft of the kusari gama before the weapon could slam into her, then quickly tossed her left stick into the air and grasped the chain of her new weapon instead, snapping it down to release the stick before weaving the weighted chain around her in a defensive figure eight pattern.
While Kim fought the mob of monkey ninjas, Ron was faring less well against Monkey Fist. The Tai Shing Pek Kwar master was pressing his advantage of better footing on the altar—thanks to his lower hands—and gradually throwing Ron more and more off balance with his steady and unending onslaught. Soon Ron had no choice but to leap off the altar backwards or suffer a lower hand buried in his stomach.
Monkey Fist immediately leapt after Ron, who turned and ran with the angry Lord in hot pursuit as soon as he landed, ambling along on all fours in a ground-eating pace that slowly narrowed the gap between him and his prey. Unfortunately for Monkey Fist, he was more focused on catching Ron than where he was going, and a second later he gave a sudden gasp of surprise as Ron jumped up and sprang off of the huge pillar he had been barreling towards, flipping over the shocked Monkey Fist to land in behind him as the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master threw his arms up and tried to soften the impact as he plowed into the pillar.
“Heh, looks like you don’t do so well on all fours Monkey Fist. Maybe you should trade those things in for a nice pair of kitty cat paws or something.” Ron taunted as he jumped back in and landed a few glancing blows on Monkey Fist before the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master could recover.
“How dare you!” Monkey Fist roared as he spun around and attacked Ron once more. “I have become the pinnacle of perfection with these hands; the ultimate monkey master!”
“Yeah, maybe the pinnacle of sick and wrong,” Ron grunted as he was forced back on the defensive by Monkey Fist’s furious assault.
“Do you really think that you can defeat me Stoppable?” Monkey Fist growled as he lashed out with his left upper hand and snagged hold of the Mystic Eye of Trinity, trying to jerk it out of Ron’s grasp.
“Why not? I’ve done it before.” Ron quipped with false bravado before he vented a yowling kiai and launched into a desperate flip-kick, surprising Monkey Fist yet again and clipping him soundly in the jaw, breaking his grip on the golden circlet and sending him staggering back from the impact.
As Ron landed, he saw pure, unbridled rage blazing from Monkey Fist’s cruel, dark eyes, and all he had was a moment to squeak; “Oh crap!” before the enraged Tai Shing Pek Kwar master charged him, unleashing a furious onslaught of powerful blows on the panicking teen.
On the far side of the room, Kim continued to face off against the five remaining monkey ninjas. She’d only managed to take out two since getting the kusari gama, and fear was starting to give her anger a run for its money as the primary emotion in her head now, because the monkey ninjas that were left were fighting her very carefully, using team tactics to keep her off balance while the vicious little monster with the spear kept trying to skewer her with it repeatedly. Kim had already taken a shallow gash across her tight stomach and only narrowly avoided having her right calf ripped open instead of just her cargo pants.
Snarling, Kim ducked low as a monkey ninja launched a flying kick at her head, knowing better by now than to pay any more attention to it than that as if flew past. She kept her main focus fixed firmly on the sadistic little monster with the spear and tracked the other monkey ninjas as best she could with her peripheral senses.
As another monkey ninja tried to land a flying punch on her, Kim took a chance and lashed out with the chain of her kusari gama, coiling it around the creature’s arm and twisting around into a spin, turning the monkey ninja into a huge flail while simultaneously dislocating its arm. After a few passes to keep the other monkey ninjas at bay—especially the one with the spear—Kim released her shrieking prisoner to fly through space and bowl over one of his black-clad brethren, sending the both of them rolling away in a bouncing heap of flailing limbs.
As soon as she released the monkey ninja she’d trapped, Kim rushed the one with the spear, knowing she only had a second or two to turn the situation to her advantage before the others recovered. The little creature stood its ground and thrust the head of its spear at her torso as she ran in, but Kim was prepared for that, and swept her kusari gama down and around in an arcing block that not only kept her from being impaled, but also let her trap the spear by levering its shaft against the shaft and blade of her own weapon.
The instant Kim had control of the spear, she quickly pivoted forwards so her left side faced the creature and grabbed the spear shaft, making sure her hand was well past where the blade of her kusari gama was locked against the hardwood. Once she had a tight grip, Kim raised her left leg and launched a brutal side thrust kick down into the creature’s right shoulder, crushing it and causing the monkey ninja to scream in pain as it released the spear.
Unlocking her kusari gama from the spear shaft, Kim hurled the spear off into the darkness behind her and stepped closer to the shrieking monkey ninja, chopping her weapon down to slam the back of the blade into the top of the creature’s head. The impact of the metal-covered shaft knocked the monkey ninja out instantly with a cloth-muffled thump that was more felt than heard.
Turning, Kim had just enough time to duck under the flying kick of one monkey ninja while she used her right leg to block a charging punch from the other. Having finally gained some measure of safety, Kim leapt over the head of the monkey ninja in front of her and did three forward handsprings, following the chain of her kusari gama and gathering it up from the floor as she went. As Kim came out of her last handspring, she twisted around in midair so that she landed facing back towards the two remaining monkey ninjas.
The last two monkey ninjas approached Kim warily, their innate savagery tempered by their recent experiences with the redhead. As they split apart and started to circle around her, Kim feinted by flicking two loops of the gathered chain of her kusari gama at the one on the left while she sprang towards the one on the right.
The monkey ninja tried leap out of the way as Kim launched a backhand swipe at it with her kusari gama, but that was a feint as well, and as soon as it was committed to its leap Kim lashed out with her left leg in a roundhouse kick. The crook of her foot and shin swept into the monkey ninja’s side and knocked the wind out of it before knocking it out of the air completely, the impact with the floor finishing the job as it sent the simian into unconsciousness.
Kim followed through with her kick, lowering her leg as she used her momentum to bring her around to face the last remaining monkey ninja. As soon as she recovered her stance, Kim crouched, ready for anything, but the lone monkey ninja was still a dozen or more feet away from her, watching her carefully with wide, frightened eyes. A moment later the monkey ninja turned and ran, heading for the deep pools of darkness that had gathered in the fading light.
Damn it! Kim growled to herself before springing after the fleeing monkey ninja, sprinting along the temple floor and then skidding to a halt as the simian started scampering up a pile of rubble.
Quickly spinning the chain of her kusari gama, Kim launched the weighted end at the monkey ninja just as it leapt over the top of the pile. The weighted chain spun around the creature’s left leg just above its ankle and Kim yanked hard, bringing the monkey ninja up short before dropping it onto the top of the pile. Pulling on the chain, Kim quickly reeled in the shrieking simian in jerking three-foot steps while it frantically scrabbled at the rubble.
Once Kim finished dragging the monkey ninja off the pile and onto the floor in front of her, she stepped on its back before it could turn over or scamper away. Then she bent over and quickly hogtied the beast with the chain of her kusari gama. After a few moments listening to it shriek on endlessly, Kim also slammed her weapon into the back of its head in order to shut it up.
While Kim had been just a little shy of fighting for her life dealing with the last of the monkey ninjas, Ron was coming ever closer to being in the same position with Monkey Fist. From the moment the enraged Tai Shing Pek Kwar master had launched his furious assault, Ron had been pushed further and further into full defensive mode, until he was full out fleeing the incensed Monkey Fist, leaping and running from the attacks far more often than attempting to block or trying to dodge them while remaining in one place.
As Ron led Monkey Fist on a wild chase through the growing shadows of the temple, the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master left a trail of cracked and shattered stone behind him from the powerful strikes that smashed into pillars, walls, and chunks of rubble as Ron evaded them. Despite Ron’s evasive expertise however, it was only a matter of time until Monkey Fist had forced Ron into an obstructed area of the room where his only way out was past Monkey Fist.
Monkey Fist sprang forward and lashed out at Ron with a right axe hand, but Ron rolled under the blow and tried to leap out into the room past Monkey Fist. As he was jumping away however, Monkey Fist continued to turn with his blow, sweeping his right leg up into a reverse roundhouse kick. Instead of striking Ron though, Monkey Fist used his lower hand to grab the teen’s leg just above his ankle and hurl him back into the obstructed area of the room.
Bouncing and rolling across the floor, Ron kept a tight grip on the circlet in his right hand so as not to lose it, and did his best to keep from taking any real damage other than having the wind knocked out of him.
As Ron came to a stop he looked up to see the room spinning around him. A moment later Monkey Fist landed nearby and loomed large and menacing above him. The Tai Shing Pek Kwar master’s eyes gleamed darkly as he savored the moment for a second, then he reared back with his right arm and thrust his rigid fingers straight down at Ron’s face.
Ron desperately threw himself to the left, narrowly avoiding the strike, and while Monkey Fist was open, he pulled his legs up under him and braced with his left while lashing out with his right, burying his foot in Monkey Fist’s side and sending the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master staggering back from him. As Ron got to his feet, Monkey Fist recovered from his pain and shock and lunged forward, launching another series of arm and leg strikes at the teen.
Having almost nowhere to go, Ron had no choice but to stand and fight, blocking and dodging as much as possible while trying to strike back as best he could. As he stood toe to toe with Monkey Fist, Ron noticed that a considerable amount of Monkey Fist’s attacks were designed to put him into position so that he could make a grab at the Mystic Eye of Trinity in Ron’s right hand.
“Y’know,” Ron grunted as he blocked another of Monkey Fist’s strikes, “for a guy who thinks I don’t stand a chance against him,” Ron ducked under an axe hand backfist, “you sure do seem to be tryin’ awful hard to get this thing away from me Monkey Fist.”
“Bah!” Monkey Fist snarled. “That just shows your painfully inadequate grasp of tactics Stoppable!” Monkey fist launched a spinning back kick at Ron. “If I can get the Mystic Eye of Trinity from you now, then I will possess the means to crush you in a matter of moments instead of having to deal with your insufferable delaying of the inevitable!” Monkey Fist punctuated his statement with a series of punches.
“Oh really?” Ron said as he weaved back and forth while blocking. “Because I was thinking it might be more along the lines of you worrying I’ll beat you again like in the past.”
“You may have beaten me before Stoppable, but that was only because I previously underestimated the full measure of the power that should by all rights be mine and mine alone!” Monkey Fist growled while swiping at the circlet once more. “If you had not stolen Mystical Monkey Power from me then you wouldn’t stand a chance in combat with a true master of Tai Shing Pek Kwar! And even with Mystical Monkey Power the best you can do is slowly stave off the inevitable, because unlike you, I do not spend every day lounging about while digesting ungodly amounts of processed cheese food products!”
With that rising shout, Monkey Fist launched into another attack pattern, striking at Ron several times before he managed to get through his guard and sweep him off his feet. Slamming his lower left hand down towards Ron’s chest, Monkey Fist ended up grasping Ron’s left forearm instead, as his teen foe managed to get his arm in between him and his attacker before the blow landed.
“It’s only a matter of time now Ron Stoppable!” Monkey Fist growled gleefully as he pressed his weight down on the now desperately struggling teen. “First I’ll have the Mystic Eye of Trinity and after that, the world!” Monkey Fist’s eyes narrowed. “And most surprisingly, I think that finally removing the thorn in my side that is your bumbling ineptitude will bring me almost as much satisfaction as taking over the world will.”
“Yeah well, I think that shot about my ‘bumbling ineptitude’ insults you more than it does me monkey dude,” Ron grunted and wheezed out while holding off Monkey Fist.
A second later Ron had to jerk the circlet away from Monkey Fist’s upper right hand once more as the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master snarled, leaned in, and made another grab for it. Realizing that in his current position Monkey Fist was right about it only being a matter of time until he got what he wanted, and still seeing no sign of Kim, Ron had no choice but to go with his backup plan.
“Rufus!” Ron shouted.
Monkey Fist’s eyes widened and he split his attention between trying to crush Ron’s arm into his chest and looking for the hairless rodent he was sure would be attacking him any moment now. Unfortunately for Monkey Fist, that wasn’t Ron’s plan at all.
It was only a few moments later that Ron saw Rufus scamper out from where he had been lurking in a pile of rubble and watching the fight nervously. As soon as Ron saw his friend waving at him with his short little front legs, Ron smiled and shouted; “Catch Rufus!” before throwing the Mystic Eye of Trinity like a Frisbee.
Rufus leapt up and snagged the golden circlet out of the air, spinning around with it twice to dissipate the momentum before landing on the pile once more. Then the hairless mole rat jumped down to the bottom while raising the circlet high above his head, slamming it down between two pieces of stone and wedging it upright between them as he landed. After that both Monkey Fist and Ron lost sight of Rufus for a few seconds as he scampered back up the far side of the pile.
“Aaaah! No, stop that immediately!” Monkey Fist shrieked as he heard a muffled, high-pitched “Hi-yah!” from behind the pile and saw a huge slab that was precariously balanced above the Mystic Eye of Trinity shudder and teeter forward slightly.
Monkey Fist tried to rush over and stop Rufus from dropping the stone on the object of his desire, but as he started to turn away, Ron grabbed his leg above the ankle with his right hand while taking hold of his lower hand with his left and twisting hard, sending Monkey Fist slamming sideways into the stone floor of the temple. As soon as Monkey Fist was down, Ron scrambled up and around while grabbing his other leg and putting the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master into a Scorpion Deathlock.
As Monkey Fist tried to simultaneously get out of the unorthodox GWA hold and claw his way across the floor to where the circlet was despite it, Rufus repeatedly jumped up and kicked the slab, rocking it back and forth more and more until finally, it toppled over. Monkey Fist watched in horror as the heavy stone fell down onto the circlet and crushed it with a heavy, grating thud. There was a brief, brilliant flash of warm golden-orange light from beneath the stone, and then it faded away, leaving only darkness once more.
“Way to go Rufus!” Ron cheered, and Rufus gave him a thumbs up from atop the pile of rubble.
A few moments later Ron paled as Monkey Fist vented a primal roar of fury from beneath him and reached up, ignoring the pain in his lower back and legs and grabbing Ron by the shoulders before heaving the teen off of him with nothing more than pure, engaged brute strength.
Ron flipped through the air twice and slammed hard into a stone pillar before dropping to the floor in a heap. Pain blossomed across Ron’s back and he was having trouble breathing as he staggered to his feet. Blinking, Ron shook his head, trying to clear it as the room seemed to sway back and forth while twin images of a seething Monkey Fist stalked across the floor towards him.
“You have defied me for the last time!” Monkey Fist roared, lashing out with an axe hand strike that Ron barely avoided. The blow passed so close it rustled the teen’s hair, and when it impacted on the pillar behind Ron, stone shattered in a spray of newly formed gravel from the power of the strike.
“Aaaah! KP, heeeelp!” Ron screamed as Monkey Fist continued to advance, murderous wrath burning in his cruel, dark eyes.
High above the scene, Monkey Fist wasn’t the only one who was angry right now, as Kim squatted in darkness on a broken pillar, trying to ignore the burning pain of her wound, made even worse as sweat ran down her slick stomach and into the long, shallow, but profusely bloody gash.
God damn it! I take down twenty monkey ninjas—twenty—half of them armed to the teeth and out for my fucking blood, and in all that time he still hasn’t taken down the one guy he’s beaten before? Kim seethed, her eyes narrowed in cold rage as she watched Monkey Fist stalking Ron. On top of which he had to destroy a priceless archeological artifact instead of just keeping it away from him, and now instead of stepping up and finishing the job he’s bawling for me like I’m his fucking mother! It would serve him right if I just let Monkey Fist pound on him for a while!
“She can’t save you Stoppable!” Monkey Fist lashed out with a series of arm strikes that Ron was barely able to turn aside. “Your little friend Kim Possible is nowhere to be found. Maybe my monkey ninjas finally managed to finish her off once and for all, or perhaps she has become as tired of your constant foolishness as I have. Either way, you’re all alone now, and soon, I will make an end of you!”
With that last growl, Monkey Fist attacked once more, unleashing a constant, relentless barrage of strikes upon Ron that slowly but surely strained the teen’s guard to the breaking point as he was steadily forced back from the onslaught. Monkey Fist struck with sweeping axe hands and brutal palm thrusts, simple snap kicks using his lower hands and more elaborate sweeps and spinning kicks as well, until finally, he opened Ron’s guard enough that a spinning back kick slammed his lower right palm into the boy’s right side with thunderous force, driving the wind out of him completely.
As Ron staggered to the left from the force of the blow, he gave a soundless cry of agony and instinctively pressed his right arm into his side. This was exactly the wrong thing to do as Monkey Fist swept his right arm up towards the opening in Ron’s defense, his axe hand strike slashing in on a direct course to shatter Ron’s skull.
Ron twisted to the right and threw up his left arm desperately, the awkwardly angled position less a block than just an attempt to get something between his head and Monkey Fist’s attack. The move came just in time, but the impact smashed Ron’s arm back out and sent him spinning to the ground several feet away.
When Ron hit the floor, he almost passed out from the multiple waves of pain that were rolling through him. He’d gasped when Monkey Fist had hit him, the inhalation turning his bruised ribs into bands of agony burning into his side, the axe hand strike itself had cracked his elbow and sent a lancing spike of torment shooting up his arm, and finally, the impact with the floor bruised a considerable amount of flesh as well as sending the air out of him again, further aggravating the excruciating pain in his ribs.
Ron frantically tried to recover and move as Monkey Fist loomed over him, but he couldn’t seem to do anything other than pant and gasp as his limbs shuddered in violent twitches and jerks. Looking up at Monkey Fist, all Ron could do was desperately pray that Kim would find him in time, silently pleading for deliverance from the dark simian angel of death that was preparing to take his life from him.
Unbeknownst to Ron, high above him Kim’s eyes widened as she saw the look of absolute terror and helplessness wash over his features. Her anger dropped away from her, shattered like glass by the sudden coils of icy fear that twisted around her heart, cutting off her breath and filling her with dread.
Oh my god, what the hell am I doing? Kim screamed in her mind as Monkey Fist crouched over Ron and raised his right arm, cocking it back until his hand was next to his face and straightening his fingers to steel-like rigidity.
“And now Ron Stoppable, it’s time for you to die!” Monkey Fist snarled a split second before Kim shouted out “Monkey Fist!” at the top of her lungs.
Whirling around and looking up at the sound of the shout, Monkey Fist barely had time to leap back out of the way as Kim came hurtling down out of the darkness. As Monkey Fist landed several feet away in a low, on-guard crouch, Kim slammed into the floor in a kneeling position where he had been standing, her right fist hammering into the stone and cracking the heavy slab down the center.
A split second later Kim’s head snapped up as the explosion of white-hot fury that had burst forth as she attacked finished pounding through her, burning away all the icy tendrils of fear in her with its fiery rage. Without even a pause, Kim sprang over Ron and did a single forward handspring to land facing Monkey Fist, her fern-green eyes blazing and a snarl of hatred twisting her features.
Despite the intensity of the unexpected ferocity pouring off Kim, Monkey Fist wasn’t fazed; he was still far too angry and focused to be intimidated by an irate little girl facing him, no matter how good she was. Unlike Ron Stoppable, Kim Possible had never once beaten him on her own. There had always been some outside factor that accounted for her victories over the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master—usually at the instigation of that fool Ron Stoppable.
“Well now, this should be interesting. I wonder how long you can manage to last against me in your con—” Monkey Fist managed to get out before Kim reached him with two gliding, grounded steps.
As Kim snapped a forward kick at Monkey Fist, trying to bury her right heel in his sternum, the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master felt just a flicker of concern over both the way Kim hadn’t bothered to try any of her usual pathetic banter on him, and that she hadn’t attacked with a flying kick like he’d expected her to use to close the distance between them. Monkey Fist quickly dismissed his concerns however, even as he slapped her foot away and swept a right horizontal axe hand at her head.
Monkey Fist was a bit more surprised when Kim swept her leg down in a smooth, controlled motion after his deflective block while simultaneously chopping two short sideways axe hands of her own into his forearm, stopping his strike on her almost as soon as it was begun. Even as her leg was still coming down, the girl grabbed his striking arm with both hands, holding his forearm in a tight grip just below his elbow and above his wrist, and used the momentum from her descending leg to turn and pull him around by the arm in a full circle before slamming him face-first into a nearby pillar.
Kim kept up her attack on Monkey Fist, not stopping at his impact into the hard stone surface of the pillar. Letting go of his arm with her left hand and sliding upright from her partially extended position, Kim hammered three brutal jabs into the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master’s right kidney. Then she slapped her left hand on his shoulder and levered his arm back even further, grinding his face into the pillar and hyperextending his shoulder until, with a dull, stomach-churning pop more felt than heard, she dislocated the joint completely.
Kim was far from done however. Letting go of Monkey Fist’s now useless arm she slammed her left forearm across his shoulders several times before the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master finally managed to stagger out to the side so he was no longer trapped between Kim and the pillar. Kim lashed out with a savage side kick to the small of Monkey Fist’s back as he staggered away, sending him sprawling across the floor.
Gasping for breath, Monkey Fist still managed to recover from his sprawling tumble despite his crippled right arm, and he came spinning around to see Kim stalking forward with that same gliding, grounded stepping he had never seen her use before today.
Snarling and ignoring the pain in his shoulder, Monkey Fist swept into a low, deep reverse sweep kick with his right leg, intending to attack with a rising punch the moment the girl leapt over his attack and take her out of the air in order to regain the initiative in the fight.
Unfortunately for Monkey Fist, Kim didn’t jump. Or rather, she didn’t jump very far, barely hopping up an inch or so as his attack came in and pulling her legs up so she was falling knees-first toward the floor. Monkey Fist’s eyes widened in fear as time seemed to slow for him. Kim twisted slightly in the air as she dropped, and pulled her left leg slightly higher than her right, so her right knee and shin were leading as she fell towards Monkey Fist’s oncoming leg. Kim’s fall brought all her weight down on that leading knee just as the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master’s leg began to pass under her, striking his lower shin and shattering his tibia and fibula like dried twigs.
Once Kim’s left foot absorbed the rest of the impact of her fall that Monkey Fist’s broken leg hadn’t, she sprang up and stepped in towards him, grabbing a handful of the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master’s black gi just as he sucked in a huge lungful of air. Even as Monkey Fist vented his scream of agony, Kim was slamming the first of three downward-angled elbows between his left shoulder and neck, the last of which snapped his collarbone.
Train your little monsters to use weapons? Almost have them kill me? Try to kill my best friend? You sick, sadistic bastard! I’ll show you what fighting really is you psychopathic freak, and teach you a lesson you’ll never fucking forget! Kim raged in her head as she hauled the screaming Monkey Fist to his feet and kicked him into another nearby pillar.
If you choose not to kill or seriously harm the people you’re fightin’, you’re limitin’ your options… Corscan’s voice echoed through Kim’s mind.
Before Monkey Fist could fall Kim sprang across the distance between them and slammed both her forearms across his chest, smashing him back into the pillar and holding him upright while she alternated driving her right and left knees up into his short ribs two or three successive blows at a time.
There’ll come a time when you’re faced with the choice of havin’ to kill, or allowin’ somethin’ else equally bad to happen…
Once she’d felt bone break on both sides, Kim stopped kneeing Monkey Fist and held him with only her left arm, taking an elongated stance so she could smash her right elbow into the side of his head. As she followed through, Kim whipped her forearm back and sent a backfist into the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master’s face, splitting open his lips and shattering his nose.
What if someone kidnaps your family an’ the only way to stop them from bein’ hurt is to kill? What if someone’s about to hurt your friend Ron, or even kill him, an’ the only way you can stop it from happenin’ is by killin’?
Kim hauled Monkey Fist up the pillar with both arms and slammed him back into it again with a wordless shout of fury.
There isn’t always another way…
Kim smashed her right elbow into Monkey Fist’s head once more and backfisted him again on the follow-through before slamming an overhand into the bridge of his nose, breaking it even more in an erupting geyser of blood.
Mercy isn’t some kinda God-given right Kim; it’s a gift that you should only give to those that deserve it…
As Monkey Fist started to slide down the pillar, Kim kept hitting him in the face and head over and over again, until she was crouched over him and using both her arms to pound blows into him at a downward angle.
“Kim! Kim! KIM!” Ron’s shouts finally penetrated the murderous haze that had filled Kim’s mind, breaking her out of her furious drive to keep hurting the bloody, unconscious form of Monkey Fist.
Panting like a racehorse and with sweat streaming down her in rivulets, Kim looked over to Ron and saw him and Rufus staring at her with shock, concern, and fear in their eyes.
“He’s had enough Kim, you can stop now!” Ron said, his voice desperate, and Rufus added “Un-hunh, un-hunh!” with an enthusiastic nod of his head.
Kim looked down at Monkey Fist again, studying the angular features of his battered, bloody face and seeing her own hands and arms as well, covered in the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master’s blood. Kim’s face hardened as she considered.
Mercy isn’t some kinda God-given right Kim; it’s a gift that you should only give to those that deserve it…
After several long, drawn out moments, Kim slowly unclenched her fists and stood up, taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly. Monkey Fist might be a deranged, psychopathic bastard, but he was beaten now, and Kim wouldn’t take his life now that he was helpless. Kim knew that Corscan would have killed the Tai Shing Pek Kwar master from the start, and so would most other people in her position, but she just couldn’t do it; it wasn’t in her nature to do something like that to a defeated opponent.
Suddenly, concern and guilt flooded through her, and Kim turned and sprinted across the floor to where Ron was trying to get back to his feet. Skidding to a halt, Kim helped Ron the rest of the way up while saying; “Oh god Ron, are you ok?”
“Y-yeah, I guess so. I mean, aside from the blinding pain and all, heh heh…” Ron answered with a forced grin, cradling his arm and right side.
Kim’s eyes went wide as she panicked, digging frantically for her Kimmunicator while asking; “Are you really hurt Ron? Do you feel any sharp pains in your side? Are you having trouble breathing? It doesn’t feel like anything’s building up in your lungs, does it?”
“N-no, nothing like that KP, just hurts like heck when I try to take a deep breath is all…” Ron said reassuringly.
“Good, good.” Kim said as she triggered the direct line to Wade on her Kimmunicator once she got it out.
“Wade! We need a med-evac at this location ASAP!” Kim said urgently the instant Wade appeared on screen. “Ron’s hurt… and… I suppose I am too…” Kim finished idly, not particularly caring about her own injury.
“What? How bad is it Kim?” Wade asked with concern.
“Ron says he’s ok, but he was hit pretty bad, so I don’t want to take any chances.” Kim answered.
“What about you Kim?” Wade asked anxiously, finally noticing all the blood that was on her.
“I’m ok Wade, it’s no big.” After a moment Kim added. “Oh, and Monkey Fist and about twenty or so monkey ninjas are going to need medical attention too.”
“Ok Kim, I’ll call in Global Justice then. They should be there in about an hour if I have anything to say about it.” Wade answered fervently, deeply concerned now.
“All right, thank you Wade.” Kim answered before ending the call.
Looking up at Ron, Kim once more asked; “Are you sure you’re ok Ron?”
“Yeah Kim, just a little shook up right now. Heh… looks like I’ll be able to get out of gym class for a few weeks though.”
“Oh thank god,” Kim replied, relief flooding her voice before it turned to contrition, guilt eating her up. “I am so sorry Ron, I never should have done that to you, never should have let that happen. Can you ever forgive me?”
“Who to the what now? Kim, you didn’t do anything I should be forgiving you for. If anything I’m the one who should be apologizing to you for not getting the job done this time.” Ron answered.
“Oh god Ron, I’m just so glad you’re ok.” Kim teared up as she very carefully but fiercely hugged her best friend tight.
“It’s ok Kim, really. Everything’s ok.” Ron said softly, but his troubled, fearful brown eyes betrayed his words as he looked over Kim’s shoulder at the bloody, battered, broken form of Monkey Fist where it lay at the base of the pillar, the dark-clad form blending into the growing shadows of the temple as the gloom slowly overtook the remaining light in the room.
