The Only Survivors
Katara’s eyes darted opened, only to see black, she was blindfolded. She heard the groaning of someone next to her. They seemed to be leaning against a wall, her arms were chained to the wall and held above her head. “Katara,” she heard in a whispery to her left. “What’s going on?” It was Toph.
“I don’t know, I can’t see.”
“Oh no, what a nightmare,” Toph said more dryly the earth she loved.
Katara managed a laugh, even now Toph could be sarcastic.
They heard a door opened, and someone moving across the room. “Okay, they will see you now,” He said. He unlocked Toph’s chains first. Katara smiled, big mistake.
Toph instantly slammed a block of the wall into the guard once freed, knocking him out cold. She then tore off Katara’s chains with her metalbending. Katara tore off her blindfold, they were in some kind of dungeon. Katara saw the door open ahead, she and Toph darted for it, they darted down the hall it lend to. Then they went through another and another and another, the halls were constantly turning and twisting. Katara’s only instinct was to get out of here. She heard a bell being rung, no doubt they had sounded some kind of alarm. She saw another door, much bigger than the others. She prayed this was their exit. She tore opened the door.
Inside was a great chamber, in which the walls were lined with rows of chairs, and on the wall, on an elevated platform, on a large chair. Sat the young avatar.
“AANG!!!” Katara shouted. Katara then became aware that all of the chairs, had people in them, and all had their eyes on her.
“Who is this that dares address the great Avatar Aang!” Shouted a woman in the crowd. She then realized most of them were woman. Though she spotted a few males in the crowd. “It is alright, Jing Nu, they are friends of mine, and I suspect your captives.” He said with a raise of his hand.
“Aang, what is going on! Where’s Sooka and the others?" she shouted.
“Katara its alright,” Aang said calmly. “Sooka and the others are fine.”
“Yea Katara, we’re right here!” Shouted a familiar voice from across the room. Amongst the crowd, Katara could see Sooka and the other’s sitting in chairs.
“Twinkle toes, what is going on?” asked Toph, obviously annoyed by the whole situation.
Aang opened his mouth to answer, but was interrupted by a women known as Jing Nu. “What’s going on is, the end of the world is near. From what the Avatar tells us, the Fire Nation now rules the entire world. It's empire now completly covers the earth like a venomous plague.”
Katara felt a sting in her stomach as she heard these words. “Who are you?” Toph asked.
“We are the last of the Air benders, a people long thought to be extinct.”
Katara stiffened. “How is that possible?”
The woman sighed. "That is a long and difficult story, one full of tragedy and death. Before the attack by Fire Lord Sozin. The Air Nomads were at peace with nature. In fact we were about to reach our spiritual peak when it happened. Our temple was viciously ambushed by firebenders, luckily, a group of several dozen women and several escaped into the undertemples. Those who weren't killed and were interrogated refused to reveal its location. We tried to get as many people into the passages lending to the temples as possible. Out of fifty thousand of monks, two hundred and thirty survived. The Air Nomads largest temple fell. Thinking they had beaten us, the firebenders left to raid our other temples, desolating our great empire. Over time, we have lived in secret, never leaving the safety of these catacombs. We have built underground villages, though with difficulty, for we are not earthbenders. Our people eventually began to grow again, more children we born and we have now a more equal balance of men and women than before. Then, using the military we have had to forge in this destructive time. We learned of the works of the Avatar, who is still young, unchanged by time. We were curious as to how this happened, and then what happens? You fall right into our laps. We though by your dress you were fire nation, for they still come here sometimes. So we attacked you, though the Avatar has answered all of our questions.”
Katara’s head was spinning with this information. Aang obviously sensed this, for he called the meeting to order. The monks filed silently out of the room, most casting mysteriously glances at Katara as they passed her.
When all had left, it left her, Aang, and the gang alone in the room. “Your rooms are down the hall,” Aang said, pointing to one of the doors. “Their the first ones, so you can’t miss them.”
“What about you?” Sooka asked.
“I’m going to my room,” he said walking towards a door opposite to the one he directed them to.
Katara watched as they filed out. Toph then asked. “Katara, are you coming?”
“No, I’m gonna stay awhile,” she said softly.
“Suit yourself,” said the blind earthbender.
Toph, left leaving Katara alone, she was worried about Aang, she wished there was something she could do to help him.
