Chapter Two: First Step
Dib woke with a start to his landlady’s booming voice and her van door slamming. “What’s her problem, now…?” He unfolded himself and winced as his tight muscles relaxed. He glared at his tightly laced boots, considered removing them, and then decided he was too lazy. Growling at his landlady’s increasing noise, Dib walked over to the window. He stopped to rub at his eyes. Why had he slept with his stupid contacts in? Wait… Why was he sleeping in the hall? Dib stared blankly at his boots as realization hit him. He swore and quickly began patting the various pockets on his pants for his cell in hopes of calling Jake to apologize.
“Wait! I’ll move it! It’s okay!” Jake said hurriedly.
“Jake?” Dib blinked, cell forgotten. He watched at Jake backed up until he bumped into his Neon’s door.
“This ain’t no parkin’ lot, boy!” Dib’s landlady shuffled away from her car, which was parked haphazardly in the middle of the street. She stalked over to Jake, finger pointing accusingly at the worried boy. “You don’t even rent here! I’ve never seen you!”
Jake’s arms were raised defensively before him, “I’m just visiting a friend!”
“Don’t you lie to me, you little brat! I know your type! You’re here to go to that grungy club down the street. Well you have to park over there like everyone else, you hear me? Go pay their stupid fee!”
Dib rushed out of his house to Jake’s defense, slamming the door behind him. “Wait! Mrs. Lopez!”
The irritated woman glanced over her shoulder and grinned uncharacteristically. “Dib! Tell this cheapskate,” she thrust her finger at Jake, “my driveway is only for renters!”
“Mrs. Lopez,” Dib cautiously stepped between the large woman and his friend. “This is Jake. He’s my friend,” Dib smiled as sweetly as he could at her, and pressed up against Jake. He could feel Jake nodding his head enthusiastically.
“Oh. Well…” She slowly lowered her hand. “You’re a good kid, Dib. So I’ll let it go this time.” She sighed. “The other tenants could learn from you. Especially that Christina…” The name was said as if Mrs. Lopez had taken a gulp of strong cough medicine. She was glaring, eyes resting on the Neon’s tire.
Dib motioned for Jake to get in the driver’s seat while Mrs. Lopez was distracted. Coughing, Dib rubbed the nape of his neck. “She’s not that bad, Mrs. Lopez…”
“You’re too nice, child. But she knows what she did.”
Glancing over, Dib caught Jake attempting to keep his laughter from noticeably moving the car. “Um… Well, this will never happen again, Mrs. Lopez. We’ll…uh…just be going.”
The woman looked up and smiled eerily at Dib. “Ok. Well you two have a nice day, then.”
“Yeah… Thanks.” Dib couldn’t get into the Neon fast enough.

“I swear, she has bi polar or something… And that smile!” Dib’s boots were pressed up against the windshield as he slouched in the passenger seat. He would have shuddered if the action didn’t threaten to vibrate his lung into his ribs. “Are you still laughing?”
Jake managed to kill his laughter to sporadic giggles and a grin. “It wasn’t funny as it was happening, but in retrospect, it’s great stuff. I bet I looked like an idiot! Aw, if I could have only seen the look on my face.” He started laughing again, “I thought she was gonna go ninja on me!”
Dib laughed, “You’re so weird.”
As they came to a stoplight, Jake turned to smile at Dib. “Yeah, maybe, but that’s why you like me.”
Blushing, Dib struggled to change the subject.
Listening to his crush’s broken attempts to start a new conversation made Jake’s heart skip a beat. Did Dib like him after all? Jake mulled over the various ways he could ask Dib without being too graceless. The light changed green, and Dib was quick to announce it. Jake directed his attention to traffic and heard a small sigh escape Dib’s lips. Not knowing exactly what to make of the sigh, Jake changed the subject. “So, what did Christina do to make Mrs. Lopez so angry?”
Dib smirked, grateful to Jake’s sign of mercy. “It was right after she had moved in. I was going out with friends, and figured I’d invite her along. I didn’t know she was washing a shirt in the sink, and I guess she was too excited to remember. So we left, and by the time we got back, the running water had managed to ruin a lot of the tile and some of the carpet. It was a really gross smell. Anyhow, I felt responsible, so I helped with the labor to replace it. So now I know how to set tile and carpet. Just another thing to add to my list of useless abilities.” Looking up, Dib idly noticed they were stopped at a green light. He looked over to Jake to find him staring dreamily at him, absentmindedly running his tongue over his lip piercing. Dib blushed. “Green.”
“Hmm?”
“The light. It’s green.”
Jake blinked, eyes clearing up. “Oh. Heh.” He coughed in embarrassment and took his foot off the brake.
“What ere you thinking about?”
“Definitely not you working without a shirt on.”
Dib laughed and Jake grinned. There was a brief silence before Dib glanced at Jake shyly. “So…when are you going to ask me out?”
“Why don’t you ask me?”
“Can it just be mutual?”
Jake smiled, “Yeah, ok. That works too.” He let his right hand slide off the steering wheel, hovering near Dib.
Dib sat up and gently took Jake’s hand. His lips curled into a soft smile as their fingers intertwined. Jake blushed and squeezed Dib’s hand.
“Hey… Why didn’t you wanna hang out today?”
Dib pulled his gaze away from their hands to look at Jake. He felt guilty as he watched Jake chew on his lip, waiting for an answer. “It’s not that I… Well, what I mean is…I sorta fell asleep.”
“Oh…”
Dib’s eyebrows drew together. He sighed, “Have you ever had a really close friend?”
Jake didn’t answer immediately, confused by the change of topic. “Yeah, sure.”
“Heh, of course you have…” Dib smiled, who could resist a friendship with Jake? “I know, let’s play ‘What If,’ ‘k? What if you never had any friends?”
Jake rose his pierced eyebrow and chanced a glance at Dib. “I suppose I’d be really sad.”
Dib had looked toward the road as soon as Jake had taken his eyes off it, not only for their safety, but to avoid his new boyfriend’s stare. “Yeah…” Dib suddenly spoke excitedly, smiling off into the distance, “Then, what if you suddenly had a friend? And it was a friendship from the last person you expected?”
Eyes on the road again, Jake said, “There’s nothing like friendship, no matter who you share it with. I’m sure it would be great.”
“Yeah, it was great…” Dib paused, curling his toes in his boot to watch the way the leather moved with them. Sounding lost, he continued, “And what if…after you were friends, they…left you?”
“Left me?”
“Like, moved?” Dib flinched at the way his voice broke, and squeezed at Jake’s hand without thinking. “Or…more like disappeared? Without saying goodbye.”
Jake was tempted to make a joke about imaginary friends to lighten Dib’s mood, but then he felt Dib squeeze his hand. Jake squeezed back. This game obviously wasn’t a game. “Hey, sometimes friends just go, yeah? If we were all still friends with the kids we knew back in elementary school, we wouldn’t feel the need to make new friends.”
Dib didn’t give a reaction, and Jake wondered if he was even listening. Opening his mouth to add more, Jake was interrupted.
“But Zim was my FIRST friend! I NEEDED him! There was no one else! Everyone else hated me… I had never had anyone to confide in until we were friends. I finally had a reason to go out.” Dib had taken his boots off the dash and they were now resting on the seat. “He left me… He could have said goodbye. Why didn’t he?” Dib tried to pull his hand away from Jake’s, but Jake held fast. “I didn’t know what to do after he was gone.”
Jake had long ago pulled into a café parking lot, and was now facing Dib. Lifting Dib’s hand, Jake planted the coffee-eyed boy’s palm against his cheek before mirroring the pose. Now that he had the other’s attention, Jake smiled softly and wiped at the tears that were ready to spill from Dib’s eyes. “It’s okay to lose someone, Dib, and I’m sure that Zim had a good reason.” Jake gauged Dib’s reaction and took his right hand off Dib’s to place it on his shoulder reassuringly. “You never know; Zim might come back one day.”
Dib nodded slowly and blushed at the affection Jake was displaying. His attention turned to Jake’s lips. He would like to be kissed by Jake, but he didn’t really want to remember this as their first kiss.
Smiling at Dib’s blush, Jake gently stroked Dib’s check and squeezed his shoulder. He leaned toward Dib, and although he saw the boy’s pursed lips ready for a kiss, he stretched to kiss his forehead, mindful of his lip ring. He whispered, “I promise, I’ll never leave you without saying goodbye.”
