Chapter 187
When Zhao 1 and 2 caught up to Zuko he was fighting a small group of Earthbenders. Some were demanding to know the location of the women and children the scouts had found after the battle while others were attacking the jail.“I’m getting help,” 2 screamed as he ran back to restaurant. His cry of battle stations had everyone flooding the street and joining the battle. The skirmish was quickly over. Everyone fighting was soon captured and a group of soldiers on eelhounds went after those trying to escape. The women and children they’d captured earlier had been wrong. They didn’t think anyone would come for them.Azula smirked, after the unexpected absorption of the 74th, Zuko’s claim of bedding the peasant, and the death of so many loyal to her she wasn’t sure how to get her plans back on track. Sing Se’s appearance several nights ago and her confirmation the captured women and children were part of her group not the ones they’d hope to lure out allowed her to regroup. She could still build a power base in this area and use it as a launching point to Ba Sing Se if her father declared Zuko his heir. Two familiar faces huddled among the confused travelers confirmed everything was solidly in place. She demanded that all of the townspeople be brought outside to witness the executions and waited for the puppets inside the restaurant to play their roles.“No, don’t kill her! Please Princess Azula don’t kill my cousin!” Jin screamed rushing forward and pointing to a slightly older girl. Her aunt and uncle grabbed her pulling her back while nudging for their son to go and get her mother. Jin’s mother arrived ten minutes later. She had been ill ever since she and Jin arrived back from getting Jin’s arm reset. She was walking stiffly and claimed she was sore but couldn’t remember what happened. Neither of them could answer what had taken so long. They’d left in the early afternoon but hadn’t returned unto the wee hours of morning.Kin also identified the girl as one of Jin’s cousins from her father’s side. She lived a few streets over in the Lower Ring of Ba Sing Se with her parents. She bowed, “Prince Zuko, I know this is rude and very presumptuous of me to ask this but as she was coming to live with us as a member of our household may she also be granted your protection?”“Well brother, you were slumming with them, is this peasant part of her family?” Azula asked pointing her fingers to form lightning.Zuko knew nothing of Jin’s family but Katara had also come outside and he knew that seeing another person struck by lightning would make her remember what was done to the Avatar. He shrugged, “Yes, this peasant belongs to that one.”“What about my husband? I was recently married,” the pretty newcomer explained pointing to plain round-faced man with no other remarkable features.Unlike Zuko, Chu-hua wasn’t so easily fooled. She could tell Azula was up to something because the princess uncharacteristically asked Zuko before striking, “We are not executing anyone tonight. I need to interrogate them first. Take everyone to the jail and move the Avatar and Water Tribe boy to my room at the hotel.”
Sing Se smiled at how easily she was accepted into her new home. Her new cousin and aunt had convinced everyone else she was a member of the family and encouraged them to treat her as such. She and Yong were prepared to convince the doubtful owner but four words from his wife killed his protests, “We need the help.”
Dutiful child was a role Sing Se played very well. She even followed the woman, Kin, down the hall she rushed to the latrine. There was a small amount of true concern in her voice when she asked, “Auntie are you all right?”In between retches the woman answered, “I think it’s just a stomach bug. Ask my sister-in-law for a bit of limestone and baking soda in a bit of water?”Sing Se did as requested then quickly returned. She was curious to learn if the folk remedy that cured most stomach ailments would halt her body’s attempts to purge itself of 6 men’s swallowed semen and the harsh contraceptive herbs she’d been given to ensure there was no evidence of what had been done to her.
Ming waited until the rest of her family including the new members were fast asleep before grabbing a small bucket to sneak out of the house under the guise of getting water. The man who had propositioned her was already beneath the short tree when she reached the designated meeting point. She chattered nervously, “I’ve never done this before. I..um... mean I have a child so I have done this, but I’ve never done this for money.”
The slender Fire Nation soldier who’d offered her twenty silvers and to meet him in the meadow next to the one gnarled tree smiled, “I figured you hadn’t. That’s why I offered to pay so handsomely. What changed your mind? I was beginning to think you weren’t coming.”“I have a child to think of,” Ming said quietly as the man kissed her neck and put his hand under her shirt. When it was over he gave her another ten coppers. She hadn’t been with a man for several years and apparently she’d been tight as a virgin. She accepted the compliment and made sure there was no one around when she washed off the scent of sex and hid her money. She too had recognized the woman calling herself “Sing” as well as her supposed husband. The two members of the Dai Li had been having lunch in the same restaurant as her child’s father when she finally found him. She heeded her aunt’s warning about the danger of causing a public scene and followed him back to his home. By then her belly was showing its roundness so he quickly sent her away with several jewels, bank notes and money. The bank notes were no longer any good now that the Fire Nation had seized the city but she still had the jewels and money hidden away. It was enough to make it to Omashu and buy a small house using legitimate routes but wouldn’t cover bribing the officials, smugglers and living expenses.Ming wasn’t surprised Sing was waiting when she snuck back into her home. Ming gestured to the pail of water explaining, “I got thirsty. The water from outside is so much colder this time of night than that we brought in earlier. It’s very refreshing on a hot night like this. Would you like some?”Sing accepted the offered cup after watching the other woman finish one. It was just as cold and refreshing as promised. Sing attributed the light sheen of wetness on the other woman’s chest as exertion. The water bucket was heavy enough that Ming was carrying it with both arms. Sing relaxed and smiled, “Next time if you want I’ll help you carry it.”Ming laughed, “I wouldn’t dare ask a newlywed to leave her the arms of her husband. It’s bad love karma.”“Bad love karma?” the undercover Dai Li agent repeated skeptically.“Woe unto those who dare part what Hou-T’u united but blessed are those who trouble not the bonded,” she repeated echoing the words of a fortune teller she’d met on the journey to see her child’s father.“Thank you, I needed to hear that,” Sing Se Feng replied with a smile. It was genuine this time. After acting as Azula’s spy and brainwashing several caravans of refugees into spying for the Fire Nation she was starting to question if she was truly helping the people remaining in her beloved city or only the Fire Nation. She had prayed to the spirits for guidance after seeing what the men she’d grown up admiring gang raping an Earth Kingdom woman. They had behaved no better than the Fire Nation soldiers whom she’d subtly advised to die quickly in battle. Azula had placed her in the home to protect Jin’s virtue but she facilitated the rape of her mother.Sing Se settled back into bed and didn’t protest when Yong slid close to her. “They are good people, Yong. They still believe in the tenets of Hou-T’u and family; let’s try our best not to hurt them.”He nodded then pressed an innocent kiss against her shoulder blade, “Anything for you future queen of my beloved city.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
