“And that’s pretty much how it happened Mo,” Kim said, smiling at her friend while taking a drink of her latest soda—grape this time. “I called home and got permission to stay the rest of the weekend in Hawaii, and we just hung out and saw all the sights and had an amazing time. We met twice over the next week and then that weekend Corscan came to Middleton and we talked my parents into letting me intern for her. Which, by the way, I actually am doing, just not with the business stuff, so don’t look at me like that Mo.” Kim finished with a smirk.
“Hey, I didn’t say anything.” Monique grinned back. “But seriously, you’re ok with—”
Monique broke off as she heard the distant blaring of the washer alarm going off in the basement, the strident sound announcing the machine had finished the latest load of laundry. Standing up, Monique looked at Kim and said; “Just a sec, I’ll be right back Kim.”
“Ok Mo. Hey, you want me to get us something to eat while you deal with that?”
“Yeah, sure Kim, there’s a bunch of sandwich stuff in the fridge, along with leftover meatloaf, and we have a bunch of frozen stuff too.” Monique responded, knowing that although Kim was a walking disaster area when it came to cooking, she was actually pretty good when it came to putting together meals with anything that was already prepared for the most part. “Can you do up some French fries along with whatever else you come up with please?”
“Sure Mo, no problem.” Kim said while getting up too.
Monique went into the kitchen with Kim following along behind her before they split up as she headed to the basement so she could deal with the last load of Derek’s clothes. Thumping down the stairs, Monique quickly went into the laundry room and started digging piles of dried clothing out of the dryer, haphazardly dumping them into the clothesbasket in front of the machine. Once she was finished, she opened the washer and began lifting heavy clumps of wet clothing out of it and shoveling them into the dryer with annoyed grunts of exertion.
While she worked, Monique thought about everything Kim had told her over the last two hours. Despite the numerous questions she’d asked Kim while she was telling the story, and the surprising amount of… detail, Kim had given about most of what had happened with her and Corscan—Monique blushed remembering some of those details—she still wasn’t sure if her suspicions were founded or not.
At first she was all but certain she was right, but it seemed that every time her stomach was knotting up as she prepared to carefully confront Kim about it, her friend would spring some new detail about how she had gotten together with the older woman that appeared to blow her suspicions out of the water completely. By now Monique had no idea what to believe, but she knew one thing for sure; if she was right, this Corscan Mataii was very, very good at manipulating people, so she’d have to be extra careful about how she handled Kim if it did look like her suspicions were correct.
Monique sighed as she turned on the dryer and then picked up the heavily loaded clothesbasket, heading for the stairs. At this point, she knew she needed more information before deciding if she should confront Kim on her suspicions or not. She just didn’t know enough yet. She still had no real explanation for some of the changes in Kim; her friend might have started acting differently because of all the emotions she had bottled up inside her from finding out she was a lesbian and being worried other people would find out, but she didn’t think that could explain the confrontational attitude or what Ron had told her about on its own. No, there had to be more to it than that, and Monique would need to find out what that was before she could decide what to do next.
Struggling up the stairs, Monique came out into the kitchen to see Kim laying out various sandwich fixings on the counter. Giving her friend a grin, Monique lugged the overloaded clothesbasket into the hall and upstairs to Derek’s room, where she unceremoniously dumped her bother’s clothes onto his bed with the other two loads she had put there previously.
Monique grinned evilly as she stretched to work out the kinks in her back from carrying the heavy load all the way up to her brother’s room. The mountain of clothing almost completely covered Derek’s bed, and Monique knew the last load would finish the job nicely when it was done. Derek would either have to spend hours folding everything after he came home—hopefully exhausted—from his camping trip, or dump it all on the floor, which would never escape mom’s notice, and which would never be allowed to pass unmentioned either—Derek would face the work or the wrath of mom, and either way, Monique would have some measure of revenge on her brother.
Smiling to herself, Monique wandered back downstairs and put the laundry basket next to the door to the basement. Then she turned and sobered as she watched Kim industriously working away at making them lunch. Sighing, Monique thought; Well, back to work, before she put on another smile and went over to stand next to Kim.
“So, what’cha makin’ us Kim?” Monique asked, looking over the organized if somewhat messy piles of white bread, lettuce, sliced tomatoes & pickles, and… meatloaf? along with the mayonnaise and mustard jars on the counter in front of Kim.
“Fries are in the oven, and I’m putting together some double-decker meatloaf sandwiches Mo.” Kim answered distractedly, laying a couple of slices of bread on each of the two plates next to her.
“Coo. Anything I can do to help?”
“No, that’s ok Mo—unless you wanna get us something to drink, and set up some bowls and ketchup for the fries.”
“Ok Kim.” Monique replied before spending the next couple of minutes preparing the table while Kim finished making the sandwiches. The two friends sat down and started eating as soon as Kim was done, with the only interruption coming when Monique got up to serve the fries after the buzzer on the stove announced they were ready. As they ate, Monique asked Kim what Hawaii was like, deciding that small talk was better right now—and honestly, wanting to hear about the sights too.
After they finished eating, Kim and Monique did the dishes and were just getting ready to head back into the living room when the dryer called up to Monique from the basement with it’s annoying buzz.
“Hah! Last one Kim, then I’m all yours for the rest of the day!” Monique grinned as she hopped over to the clothesbasket and swept it off the floor, relieved to have finally finished all the work that had been dumped on her.
“Ok Mo.” Kim smiled back as her friend headed downstairs, and then she went into the living room. It was only a short time later that Monique came in and joined her after having carted the last load of clothing up to her brother’s room, plopping down in her father’s overstuffed recliner and sighing deeply as she went limp with relaxation.
“Damn girlfriend, but brothers sure do suck sometimes.” Monique snipped, though she was grinning as she did.
“Yeah, tell me about it.” Kim grinned back.
“Soooo… where were we?” Monique hedged.
“Talking about my ‘coming out party’ I think.” Kim snickered.
“Mmmm, yeah. So ahhhh… like I was sayin’, you’re ok with keepin’ all this on the down-low from your parents?”
Kim sighed and looked out the window. “No, not really Mo. I mean, it’s not like I want to tell them what’s going on; they’re my parents, and I do not want to talk to them about how I’m sleeping with an older woman. And…” Kim paused for a long time, and then continued in a quiet, trembling voice “I’m scared Mo. About what they’ll think of me now that I know I’m… Gay.”
“Hey, Kim, they’re your parents girlfriend, and your parents are pretty screwed up, but in a damn good way, y’dig? I am sure that when you decide to tell them, it won’t change a damn thing between you. Though they ain’t gonna be happy about all this lyin’ and sneakin’ around behind their backs.”
Kim turned back to Monique, blinking her misty eyes a few times. “Hey, I’ll admit I might be sneaking around, but I am not lying to them Mo…” Kim paused, remembering an argument she’d had with her mom just last month.
“Be that as it may young lady, we are still going to talk about your behavior lately.” Ann replied.
“Mom! I’m, just trying a few things out, ok? This is so not the drama!” Kim fumed.
“This is most definitely ‘the drama’ Kimberly. The changes in your appearance, these clothes you’ve been wearing, your attitude, and your language! It’s almost like you’re a different person sometimes!”
Kim just couldn’t take it, not right now. She’d had the same nightmare she’d been having for a while now again last night and barely gotten any sleep, she was frustrated by the fact that she still couldn’t remember any solid details about the damn thing, Bonnie had been extra bitchy today, she’d gotten a mission call from Wade on the way home, so the odds were slim to none that she’d get laid tonight like she desperately needed to, and to top it all off, the minute she got in the front door her mom had been there waiting to start in on her.
“God damnit mom! So I’m wearing some different styles and I swear a little now, so what? I don’t drink,” except for a little wine with dinner every now and then, “I don’t do drugs,” except that one time in Jamaica just to try it, “I don’t party,” except for the clubs we’ve been to, “ I’m getting my pilot’s license, my grades are the highest they’ve ever been, and I save the damn world on a regular basis, so could you please just cut me some goddamn slack here?” Kim snapped before storming upstairs.
“Kimberly Ann Possible, you get right back here this instant young lady!” Ann shouted at her daughter’s retreating back.
“I can’t mom, I have to go stop an insane genius with a Napoleon complex from freezing the world’s oceans solid!” Kim ranted back, aggravated beyond belief.
Ann stood at the bottom of the stairs, glaring up at where Kim had vanished from her line of sight, grinding her teeth in impotent frustration for several seconds before shaking her head and shouting; “We are not done yet young lady!”
Ann heard Kim shout “Fine, whatever!” before her daughter slammed the door to her room so hard it sounded like a gunshot.
Kim looked down at her lap. “Ok, so maybe I’m lying to them a little, but I am not lying to them about anything major. I’m just… y’know, going with ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’ They don’t ask and I don’t tell.” Kim looked up at Monique again. “I mean seriously Monique, would you tell your parents you were sleeping with someone?”
“My parents? Hell no… but your parents? I don’t know Kim, I think I might.”
“And if that someone was a woman eleven years older than you?” Kim asked dryly, raising an eyebrow as she did.
“Ooooh-kay, so, maybe not then. But really Kim, you’re going to have to tell them eventually; you can’t keep this a secret forever.”
“Hey, I can do anything, remember?” Kim joked for a second, but then quickly sobered and sighed. “I know Monique, but, it’s… hard. I mean, you practically had to beat it out of me earlier, and you’re my best girlfriend and I know you don’t think anything about stuff like this, but it’s my mom and dad Mo. My very old, parental, so not ready to deal with this drama mom and dad. How can I tell them I’m Gay? I mean… I might be able to get through it with mom, but dad? No way, I’m just not ready for that yet Mo. I might not ever be…”
“Hey, I ain’t sayin’ you should do it tonight Kim, I’m just sayin’ you should really think about it more. I’m pretty sure they’d understand. I mean, out of every adult I know, your parents are… well, honestly Kim? They’re crazy girlfriend. Your parents are certifiable with what they’re willing to let you do because they trust you. But hey, it works for you guys, and it’s a good kinda crazy, y’dig?”
“I know Mo.” Kim smiled.
“So ahhhh, what does Corscan think about it? I mean, she came up with this whole internship thing so you could hide what you were doing from your parents, right?”
“Well, sorta Mo, but not exactly. I mean, I was the one that asked how we were going to keep getting together enough for her to start teaching me [The Way] and, y’know…” Kim trailed off.
“Have hot, mind-blowing sex with each other?” Monique teasingly finished in a dry tone, trying to keep Kim relaxed and at ease.
“Ummm, yeah, that.” Kim answered, blushing far less than Monique would have expected. “Anyway, when I brought it up, Corscan suggested the whole internship thing, but when she did, she did ask me if I’d rather just tell them the truth.”
“You’re shittin’ me.” Monique couldn’t believe what Kim had just said; she was totally shocked.
“Hunh, what?” Kim’s attention snapped fully to Monique when she heard her tone. “Oh god no Mo, not that. I meant about the training and everything. But I wasn’t sure my parents would let me do it if it was just for my ummm… hobby, so to speak, so we decided to ahhhh… hedge the truth a little by being ambiguous about exactly what I was interning for. We let my parents think it was about the business end. Y’know, the whole ‘great opportunity’ for a young lady who wants to get into a good college and have something impressive to put on a résumé. At least…” Kim trailed off again, looking down.
“What?”
Kim looked up and answered; “Well, I didn’t think of it at the time, I mean, it just seemed obvious that she was talking about the training, but… jeeze Mo, now that I really know what she’s like… god, I think you may be right. She might have meant telling them the truth about everything.” Kim shook her head in disbelief. “Wow… I’m glad I was oblivious to that. I might have actually been crazy enough to try it…”
Monique couldn’t help laughing at the expression on Kim’s face. “Well, I think you’re safe now girlfriend; you’re way too bottled up to let anything slip.”
“Gee, thanks Mo,” Kim said dryly.
Monique just smiled.
“So, Kim… I’m wondering… how are you dealing with it anyway? I mean, the whole ahhh… what? Open relationship? Thing you’ve got going on with her. I mean, it’s been three months and you’re still seeing her, so it’s got to have come up by now, right? It’s not bothering you is it?”
“Well, I gotta admit Mo, it… it’s giving me problems, but, not the way you’d think. I mean, ok, it’s seriously weird knowing that the person you’re with might be into other people too, but, it’s kinda comforting to know that you don’t have to worry about them ever leaving you for someone else either, y’know? But the idea of sharing like that… yeah, I’ve gotta work at it, and it’s hard, but… it’s not too bad. I still have no idea if it’s right for me or not, but… I’m sure I don’t hate it either. It doesn’t feel wrong, just… weird, and really hard, and… ok, maybe a little wrong, but not wrong wrong, just… my instincts, y’know? I’ve gotta fight them; try not to be jealous or possessive, to let go knowing I have nothing to lose by doing it, y’know? Of course, it helps that I like Hui, and that I know Corscan doesn’t love her like that. I’m not sure I could handle it if she had someone she really loved or that I didn’t really like.”
“Well, that’s cool and all, but, I was kinda talking about the other thing, y’know?”
“Oh, that,” Kim blushed and looked away from Monique. “Well ahhhh, no, can’t say I’ve got any real problems with that…”
Monique inclined her head towards Kim and watched her as if she were looking over the rims of some imaginary glasses. A moment later she raised an eyebrow and cocked her head slightly, murmuring softly to herself. Then she repeated herself more loudly.
“No way! Girl you did not! Oh my god you did, didn’t you? You did! I can’t believe it!”
Kim’s blush increased dramatically, and she quickly looked at Monique and then away again. “I don’t know what you’re taking about Mo.”
“Don’t’choo try an’ play me girl! You know damn well what I’m talking about!”
“I… well…” Kim sighed. “Ok, you got me Mo.”
“Damn… Kimberly Ann Possible in a threesome, who’d’a thunk it?” Monique paused, then added sharply; “It was only a threesome, right?”
“Yes Mo, only threesomes. Jeeze!” Kim grumbled as her blush slowly faded.
“Wow. So how the hell did that happen? I mean, how did she ask you anyway? I can’t even imagine how you’d try and talk someone into that.”
“Well ahhhh… it wasn’t exactly… her, that asked.”
“Oh no… girl, you are not telling me it was you…” Monique trailed off, just staring at Kim. Eventually her friend nodded, and Monique said; “I just can’t believe it. How the hell… I mean seriously Kim, you have got to tell me how that happened.”
Kim sighed and shook her head. “It just sorta happened Mo. I mean, it’s not like I went there thinking; ‘Ok, tonight I’m going to ask her if we can have a threesome with someone’ or something.”
“It was about a month and a half ago, on a Monday. I went down to CI headquarters like any other day; I did my homework on the plane and had a little something to eat, and once I got there Corscan put me through my training routines and then we talked about tactics and strategy for a couple of hours. After that we had dinner together, and once we were done, instead of moving on to something more relaxing before… y’know, bed, Corscan told me that it had been a really long, really busy weekend for her, and she hadn’t had any time to spend with Hui, so she needed to do that instead of staying with me for the rest of the night.”
“Well… I didn’t really feel like sleeping alone that night, and honestly, I was kinda curious too, so… I asked her if Hui would mind if I came along and, y’know, just kinda… watched.” Kim blushed a little again, and then looked Monique in the eye. “It wasn’t that I was planning on doing anything more than that, and it wasn’t like I was going there to watch them to get off on it or anything; the main reason I asked was that I wanted to see how I felt while I watched them. I… I wanted to see if I could handle seeing Corscan with someone other than me, y’know?”
“So anyway, she talked to Hui and she was ok with it, so I went along for the ride so to speak. Once we were there, it was a little weird seeing Corscan and her being so close, and like I said Mo, I had to really wale on my instincts not to be tweaked by it, but after a while I sorta got a little used to it, and once I did… well, it started to turn me on Mo. Like, really, really turn me on—way more than I would have expected it to. Soooo… once they started getting into the serious stuff, I sorta couldn’t help… kinda… taking care of myself too…” Kim was really blushing now, and once again, Monique was grateful her dark complexion kept her own blush hidden.
“Anyway, it was kinda hard for them not to notice, and once they did, well, Corscan just smiled and went back to what she was doing, but Hui… I think I understand what Corscan meant about how she deserves more than Corscan can give her. Hui sorta… I don’t really know how to describe it Mo, but she sorta… involved me in what they were doing without actually doing anything. It was just a look here and there, a… a sense of… invitation… she gave off, like she was connecting me to them somehow.”
“Watching her with Corscan, I knew she knew I was excited by it, and that she enjoyed how she was helping make me hot, that she was happy because I was enjoying myself because of something she was doing… no, happy’s not right… she was… I don’t know, content? Pleased?” Kim sighed. “I don’t know… like I said Mo, it’s really hard to describe what it was like, but the connection was there, and I knew that she wanted me to enjoy myself as much as she was, maybe even more.”
“After a little more time watching them, I couldn’t resist wanting to do more than just watch, so I asked if they’d mind me joining in, and, well, obviously they didn’t—though it took a while to get past Corscan’s roadblocks…” Kim grinned at the memory.
“Say what?” Monique asked, confused.
Kim gave a soft huff of amusement and smiled at Monique; “For someone so spontaneous and easygoing about some things she can be downright anal when it comes to other stuff. ‘Are you sure you want to do this? You don’t have to if you don’t want to. You won’t be able to undo it…’ blah blah blah-ba-dee blah blah. You’ve gotta jump through a dozen hoops sometimes, y’know?”
“Well, hey, at least she seems to be looking out for you.”
“Yeah, I guess.” Kim answered, still smiling.
“So, you didn’t have any regrets then?” Monique asked carefully. “I mean, you’re not bothered by it or anything?”
“Not… exactly Mo.” Kim looked away as her expression sobered. “I mean, there’ve been a few times where I was a little uncomfortable with what I was doing, or a bit worried about what I was going to be doing beforehand, but for the most part, I’m ok with it. But afterwards… it’s weird Mo. I don’t really regret it, but… it’s like I’m worried about not being worried about it, y’know? Like I should be having trouble with it, that I should regret it, and because I’m not really, it bothers me.” Kim sighed and looked back to Monique. “Does that make any sense Monique?”
“Yeah, I think so Kim.” Monique responded before pausing for a while, gathering her thoughts. Yet again Kim had told her something that could go either way; that seemed to both absolve and condemn the woman she was seeing. Monique sighed; there was no getting around it; she was going to have to try and draw more information out of Kim, and it was going to get harder to do so without making her suspicious about it.
“So Kim, I know you’ve been having a hard time with being afraid people would find out about the changes you’ve been going through, but girlfriend, that can’t be all of it. I mean, I know you get wrapped up in stuff sometimes, but for a girl wanting to hide stuff you sure ain’t goin’ about it any way I would, y’dig?”
“What do you mean Monique?” Kim asked, confused.
“Well, y’know most folks that want to keep people from finding out something’s up with them tend to, y’know, act normal and try not to draw attention to themselves. That is why they call it ‘keepin’ it on the down-low’ after all. But girlfriend, you’ve pretty much been doing the exact opposite there now haven’t you?”
“Now, I know that keeping things bottled up like you’ve been doing can cause stuff to leak out in unexpected ways, but… seriously girl, that can’t be all of it. I mean, the way you talk now, ok… I could see that. Maybe even some of the clothes, but the rest of it? Sorry Kim, but I just can’t see it. Unless there’s… something else bothering you, or… you’re still not telling me everything?” Monique trailed off into silence, deciding to stop pushing and see what Kim said now.
Kim smiled ruefully and nodded. “Yeah, ok, so you’re right there Mo. If you really want to know, the clothes… well, ok, some of them are just something I want to try out, but for the most part, it’s part of my training. Well, sort of. Not really, but kinda…”
“Say what?” Monique prompted, quite confused now.
“Well, part of it is about things Corscan wants me to learn and part of it is about things I asked Corscan to show me how to do. If it was just the stuff she wanted to show me it wouldn’t be nearly as bad.” Kim smiled.
“Still lost Kim.”
“Ok, well, first you need to understand what it’s like to be around Corscan seeing her in action. It’s like… I don’t know, like nothing can throw her off her game; she’s a social chameleon, always confidant and relaxed no matter where we go. Whether we’re at some high-class charity dinner in L.A. or a rave in Madrid or a pub in Dublin or a Jazz club in Chicago, she just seems to fit in perfectly without even trying.”
“There was this one time we were in New York, at this laid-back dance club, and she went to the bar to get us something to drink—no Mo, not alcohol; the only thing I’m drinking is a little wine with dinner every now and then, and I’m not even sure I’m going to keep doing that given how bad it tastes sometimes. Anyway, while she was away, I overheard these jerks on the other side of a hanging vine divider talking about how she looked like a freak with her stripes and being so muscular. Said she looked like a guy, was probably a dyke, stuff like that, y’know?”
Monique nodded and Kim continued her story.
“When Corscan came back, they were still going at it, and I tried to lead her away before she could hear them, but it didn’t work too well. So, instead of getting angry or upset like I was, she just smiled and said; ‘Come on, I wanna show you something. Just play along…’ Then she led us around and we approached the guys from a different angle so they wouldn’t know we heard them. Over the next half-hour or so she completely turned their whole attitudes around. Seriously, it was like watching some kind of magic trick; after a while they were all over her, chatting her up and wanting to dance; the one that was the worst jackass was practically in his friend’s faces trying to block them while he hit on her. It was just amazing.”
“After it was all over, I asked her how she did it, and she told me that some of it was natural ability, like the way she can read people, but that a lot of it can be learned if you’re willing to try. She called it ‘owning your sexuality,’ y’know, making what you’ve got work for you? She told me that she could combine it with my leadership training if I wanted to, but, that it would require some… seriously radical steps if I wanted to get anywhere with it quickly.”
“Well, you know me Mo,” Kim smiled, “never one to back down from a challenge, right? So, that’s what the clothes are all about; they’re designed to change the way people react to me based on my appearance, each style in a different way. Right now my job is just to carefully watch the way everyone reacts as I change appearances from day to day and learn how to read people better, as well as paying attention to how the way I look effects their different reactions. Once I start getting that down, and Corscan has taught me enough social techniques, I’m going to have to start trying to overcome those reactions and get them to act differently than they should, to learn how to project the image and attitude I want despite how I look.”
“Soooo… what? It’s all just some big social experiment?” Monique asked.
“Heh, more or less Mo. I mean, some of the things I’m wearing I kinda like, but for the most part, I wouldn’t be caught dead in them unless they really fit what I was doing. If I didn’t need to do it this way in order to learn this stuff as fast as I could, I’d definitely still be wearing my normal stuff mainly.”
“Ooooh-kay. Well, that’s a little messed up, but yeah, that’s definitely you when you get a bone between your teeth all right.” Monique said. “But… that doesn’t really explain the other stuff Kim. The way you’re kinda ignoring everything that’s going on around school because of what you’re doing, or the swearing, and the way you’re kinda… aggressive now, y’know? I mean hell, you threatened to put Brick through a wall just two days ago girl; what’s up with that?”
“Oh, that…” Kim said, turning away and looking distinctly uncomfortable again.
“Yeah Kim. Even with everything you’ve told me, it just isn’t like you at all.” Monique lowered her voice, speaking with gentle caring. “Are you sure there isn’t anything else you’re not telling me that’s bothering you? I mean hey girlfriend, you can tell me anything at all now, right? So if there is something…”
Kim sighed and said; “I know Mo, and there is…” before trailing off and looking up at her friend sharply, her eyes narrowing slightly as she intently examined Monique’s features.
“Hang on a minute…” Kim said suspiciously. “What’s the deal Monique?”
“What do you mean Kim?”
“Ever since I told you what’s been going on with me, you’ve been trying to steer this conversation in some direction, haven’t you? You’re trying to find out something without actually having to come out and ask me, aren’t you?” Kim said tightly.
“I…” Monique trailed off with a sigh. Either she’d screwed up somewhere along the line and been a little too obvious, or Corscan really was teaching Kim how to read people. “I’m sorry Kim, you’re right.” Monique apologized contritely.
“Why Monique? After what you did this morning, what could you possibly want to ask me about that you wouldn’t just come out and ask me?”
“I’m sorry Kim, really I am, but… with everything that’s been going on with you, the way you’ve been acting, and then you show up this morning looking like you’ve gone ten rounds with a biker gang and wanting to bail on me… I had to drive you into a corner until you had no way out to finally get you to talk, and once I do you tell me you’re in some kind of open relationship with a woman over a decade older than you…” Monique slid forwards until she was perched on the edge of her chair, leaning towards Kim. “Well, there was only one thing I could think of that would explain it all, especially with what Ron told me happened a few weeks ago with you and that Monkey Fist guy, and—”
“Oh god!” Kim blanched and looked away, a pained expression on her face. “He… he told you about that? Oh god, I should have never… never let that happen, never done that to Ron, but… that day everything seemed to be coming down on me all at once and he was just being Ron at the worst possible time and I couldn’t deal with it… I just… lost it…”
Ooooh-kay… looks like I have to have a little talk with Ron about keeping secrets from people he should be telling them to too… Monique thought to herself before softly saying; “Kim, I really think you should tell me everything, ok? Just in case Ron left out anything and so I know everything that led up to it too. You really will feel better if you talk about it Kim.”
Monique hated having to take advantage of the obviously emotionally vulnerable state Kim was now in over being confronted by whatever happened with her and Ron while they were going after Monkey Fist, but she didn’t have a choice. She wasn’t going to let any opportunity to find out if she was right about her suspicions or not pass by; she cared far too much about Kim to let herself give in to weakness now.
“O— ok Monique, you’re right; I need to tell someone about this.” Kim answered, forgetting for the moment that she had just been on the verge of confronting Monique herself. “Part of it has been about my being afraid people would find out about me, but… there’s more Mo. There’s a lot of good things about being with Corscan—great things—but, there’s some bad stuff too, besides just that, and… there’s something else Mo, something… something really bad… and I just don’t know how to deal with it… I don’t even know if I can deal with it…”
Monique felt her stomach twisting up in knots at the pain and desperation in Kim’s soft, wavering voice, convinced she was right now, and scared to death over it. She held her breath and remained perched on the edge of her seat as Kim went on, unwilling to do anything that might break Kim out of her current state of willing confession.
“I guess… I guess I should tell you about everything as it happened, just so you know how it’s all been building up for me.”
“Ok Kim, whatever you want.”
Monique carefully leaned back into her chair while Kim began to tell her tale.
