Chapter 172
It took Jin a moment to realize that most of the Fire Nation soldiers were still pointing and laughing at her while money exchanged hands. The two look-alikes in front of her were not among them. They were scowling. She realized one was slightly taller when he approached her, “You are lucky we were still wearing our armor and that you have bad aim. You would have been punished as a matter of principle if we had sustained even the smallest of cut. Your whole family would have suffered if you had injured the prince or his companion.”
The shorter one spoke next; he was broader and his voice was slightly deeper, “Prince Zuko has shown you exceptional kindness today. His father has killed people for doing less to his mother. He has even killed to protect Lady Katara and has burned down establishments owned by those who insulted her. Be grateful he didn’t feel she was in any true danger and that he is loyal to those who have shown him kindness.”
Jin’s mother overheard everything the two boys told her daughter. They had been sitting at the table with him. They didn’t seem to be maliciously making fun of her daughter or the girl who had been with them. They simply seemed to enjoy teasing their friend. They cringed and lowered their heads when the Prince had callously asked that the Waterbender sign the document protecting her. They raised them and rolled their eyes at the ceiling when he said Jin essentially meant nothing to them.
As if on cue they stopped in front of her, “Keep your daughter away from them. Prince Zuko means well but he loses his head where Lady Katara is concerned.”
The older woman nodded and approached her daughter. She crossly demanded, “Jin, go to your room. We’ll talk later.”
That snapped the girl out of her stupor, “But Mom...”
“Go Jin. I love you but I can’t look at you right now. Go to your room,” Kin repeated sternly.
“But Mom, I didn’t do anything wrong.” Jin argued, “You saw her. You heard what he said to me; what he said about me. Why am I the one being punished? I didn’t do anything wrong. Why do I have to go to my room?”
Her mother slapped her again, harder this time and yelled, “Because I said so! Now go to your room!”
Jin ran upstairs crying. She flopped on the bed and threw her arms around her pillow. A piece of paper brushed her arm. She realized it was an unused tea coupon for the Jade Dragon that she had been using as a talisman. Each night she’d hold it as she fell asleep wishing it would allow her to see Lee again. She ripped it up. He lied to her and her mother slapped her. He lied, the Waterbender betrayed them and yet she was one punished. It wasn’t right.
Jin snuck down the stairway using the activity of the restaurant as cover to sneak out of the backdoor. She didn’t go very far before she saw Lee and the Waterbender. She still couldn’t bring herself to call him Zuko. He and his slut were hugged up in an alleyway. She was walking over to confront them when an older woman that looked similar to Zuko appeared. Jin frowned as the older woman ruffled both their hair and kissed their foreheads. Jin bit her lips as the urge to cry became overwhelming. His mother approved of her.
She knew she couldn’t sneak back into the restaurant without being seen so she took a longer route down two different alleys to the hotel. She knocked on the seldom used kitchen door. When her friend Ami answered she burst into tears, “He’s here. Lee’s here.”
“But that’s good isn’t it?” Her friend questioned quickly ushering her in and dragging her down the hallway, “You wanted to see him so why are you crying?”
Ami stopped as it dawned on her that the only new arrivals were Fire Nation and there was only one who fits Lee’s descrption, “Nooo. No way. Lee? He can’t be, but you said he has a burnnnn scaarr…”
Her eyes became as wide as saucers and she shook her head in disbelief as she started jumping up and down, “Uh uhn, no way. I only saw one with a burn scar. The Prince. The Prince! You and the Prince of the Fire Nation?!”
“Jin, that’s…that’s…oh sweet Hou- T’u! You went out with a prince and have been in love with him all this time? Did he come for you? Do you want me to let you into his room?” Ami asked excitedly as Jin sobbed louder.
“Jin stop crying. He’s here. Lee’s here. Why are you crying?” she asked moving over to hug her. “It’s okay, Jin. It will be okay of you just talk to him.”
Jin shook her head wiping her nose on her sleeve.
“Don’t be so negative. Come on, I’ll sneak you up the back way and let you into his room. I’m sure once he sees you and the two of you talk everything will be fine. I don’t think they’ve made it back. I can let you in so you can surprise him.” The young hotel owner gasped in realization, “They haven’t made it back. Oh, Jin. I’m so sorry. How could I be so stupid? That’s why you’re crying isn’t it? He’s sharing a room with her.”
Jin nodded and the other girl continued to attempt to console her, “Maybe it’s not what it seems. I’ve been working here all my life. I knew about dirty sheets way before I knew what caused them. Both times they’ve been here the sheets have been clean. You know how boys are. If there was something between them there would have been all kinds of stains.”
Jin shook her head, “Lee’s not like that, Ami. He’s a gentleman. When we went on our date he was awkward and didn’t try anything. I had to kiss him. When I brought his hands to my chest he ran away. He didn’t even try to fondle me.”
“Wait you did what? Are you crazy? He’s Fire Nation! Beside you don’t just hand your boobs to some random boy!” she shrieked outraged. “What were you thinking?”
Jin justified her actions between sniffles, “You don’t understand there were so many girls who liked him. They were a lot prettier and older. I had to do something to get his attention.”
“Jin, rule number one from your perverted cousin and my perverted brother. If you put out to get attention you’ll get put out right after he puts it in. It’s true that most of the girls who pass through here are the ones doing the leaving, but you get the idea. Once they’ve dipped their sticks they don’t think anything more about them.”
“He’s lying! I didn’t sleep with him!” Jin yelled.
“You can say that because he ran away! What would you have done if he actually wanted to play with your titties? Would you have let him screw you to keep his attention from the girls that are older and prettier?”
“No!” Jin replied adamantly. “We wouldn’t have gone that far.”
Her friend raised her eyebrow speculatively as if unconvinced of Jin’s statement.
“I wouldn’t have. Besides, it doesn’t matter. He’s with the Waterbender,” Jin huffed finally admitting the truth and bringing on another round of tears.
Her friend smiled deviously at her, “Do you want me to distract her and let you into their room? Their sheets have been clean so maybe you can use your feminine wiles to sway him?”
Jin’s eyes widened, “But you just said…”
“I know what I said, but all’s fair in love and war. You’re in love; we’re at war. He’s Fire Nation, and she’s a traitor so that makes everything fair,” she shrugged.
“Besides you said you wouldn’t put out. Guys like girls that give them a little to think about and make them hope for more. You know a little taste of milk but not the whole cow-pig?” she said elbowing Jin. “Just flash him some boob and rub his thigh a little bit. Make him uncomfortable but not happy.”
“I can’t believe you are telling me this,” Jin said shuddering as she wiped her nose.
She shrugged, “You were gone. This town is full of old people and babies. You know what my parents think of Ming. I had to hang out with someone. Those rockheads were the only two people close to my age.”
“But Yick and Yuck?” Jin said using the childhood nickname she’d given her cousin and Ami’s brother while her face screwed up in disgust.
“Look do you want me to sneak you into his room or not? You can hide in the closet while I ask her to …I don’t know… help me move some water or something. Just stop crying. No man wants a snot monster. Go clean yourself up while I make sure I can get to you know what we used to play in,” she said tilting her head towards the secret passages in the hotel.
Jin nodded and walked to her friend’s washroom. She blew her nose and cleaned her face; pressing the cold wet towel against her eyes hoping it would staunch the flow of her tears.
“Here put this on,” Ami said opening the door and handing her a dress.
Jin looked at the garment and handed it back, “I can’t wear this, your grandmother made this before she passed. It’s supposed to be your wedding dress.”
“I’m too young to get married and I have no prospects. You do. Granny had started on yours so I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if you wore it to get Lee. She loved you and considered you her grandchild too.” Ami insisted. “Now stop crying, put this on, and let me do your hair.”
Jin nodded and wiped her face again. After Ami did her hair she carefully put on the simple but elegant dress. The two girls lifted the mattress to reveal a pair of stairs and pulled it back over the frame once they were in the secret entrance. Once in the basement they turned and followed a different set upstairs.
“It’s a good thing Poppa Lau used to be a freedom fighter before the Fire Nation decided there was nothing they wanted here, huh?” Ami joked trying to ease Jin’s nervousness.
“Yeah, I remember how angry your mom got when he showed us these and taught us how to get around. She never knew if we were somewhere playing or if something had happened to us,” Jin replied somewhat guilty that she had left without telling her mom. The months they were in Ba Sing Se after the invasion had been difficult on her mother. Kin had dressed in shapeless clothing and floured her hair pretending to be an elderly widow without a family. She lived in fear someone whose child or wife had suffered the unthinkable would reveal that she was much younger and hiding a teenage daughter. Jin didn’t have much time to regret her actions before they arrived at the entrance to the room.
Ami slid back the small viewing panel in time to see Zuko and Katara enter the room. She placed a hand to her lips and waved Jin over, “Now we can see if he really does like her or if it’s just more Fire Nation propaganda that he’s screwing the Avatar’s Waterbender. You know what they said about Omashu and the North Pole but look how that turned out.”
Nacho: Thank you for the constructive criticism. I’ve seen the stories with a mile between each paragraph and some that are really difficult to read because they are too close together. I’m trying to find a happy medium between those extremes.
Chapter length is something I do struggle with. I’m trying not to write myself into a hole by getting too close to the part I’m still writing but I want to post at a decent pace because I know how it feels to wait on the next chapter. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
