Chapter 138
Katara left the shop trembling. A skin walker was a Water Tribe term, so was wendigo. A skin walker was any human that shape-shifted into an animal or demon. A wendigo was an evil spirit with an insatiable appetite for killing and human flesh. Katara had overheard her dad telling Gran-Gran he had been possessed by the spirit of a wendigo after her mother’s death and the purification ritual was unsuccessful.
During the exorcism the demon told the sages the creature was born of Chieftess Kya’s spirit. It was the manifestation of her anger at the Fire Nation and her dying wish to protect her children. Hakoda would never desire to eat human flesh, but would crave the way it felt on his blade. It would lie dormant and die with Hakoda unless her children were in danger. If it awoke, no power on earth would stop it until they were safe.
Zuko felt her shaking beside him, “Katara, what’s wrong?”
“Zuko, what is a Rakshasa?” Katara asked quietly.
“It’s a shape-shifting demon that eats people,” he explained before asking, “Don’t tell me you believe what that old man said?”
“Zuko I travel with the bridge between the spirit world and the mortal realm. I saw Avatar Roku destroy his temple. I fought against the forest spirit that kidnapped my brother. I saw La rise up from the spirit oasis. Yes, I believe in demons,” Katara confessed. She especially believed in this one. Her father was willing to sacrifice himself on the day of the invasion to let them escape. He would go to ends of the world to find her and Sokka. He would think she betrayed them. He would disown her for giving her body to Zuko.
Zuko wrapped his arm around her and kissed her forehead, “Don’t worry, Katara. I won’t let the demon hurt you.”
Katara lowered her head. Her father would not physically hurt her. The Southern Water Tribe punishment for sex outside marriage was marriage. The punishment for cavorting with the enemy was banishment. The punishment for betraying a friend was shunning. She would be shunned by her people and banished to the Fire Nation to marry Zuko.
“Katara, I promise, I’ll protect you. There has to be some sort of candle and smoke exorcism thing that will work. Besides I heard demons were scared of salt and fire,” Zuko reached into his boot and pulled out a small pouch, “It’s salt. Uncle Iroh told me to always keep a bundle in case we found food in an unexpected place.”
Katara laughed. The Prince of the Fire Nation carried salt in his shoe. She thought it was bad Sokka carried meat tenderizing herbs in his.
“What? Salt is an herb essential to life. Its use goes back to the very beginning of humanity. There are drawings of the ancient Sun Warriors harvesting it from the caves exposed by low tides on our islands,” Zuko defended.
“Thank you for the history lesson Professor Zuko. I was laughing because my brother carries around meat tenderizing herbs and Toph carries around a rock that she swears is a miracle seasoning, but neither one of them has sense to carry around any food for longer than it takes to eat it. I’m guessing that you are the same way,” Katara giggled when Zuko blushed at her explanation.
“What’s the purpose of carrying food if you’re not going to eat it?” He asked logically.
“What’s the purpose of carrying food if you’re going to eat it ten minutes after you buy it?” she parried.
“I can’t help it if I get hungry! I’m still growing. Look at my feet. Uncle says the abnormal length to leg ratio means I still have a few more inches until I grow into them,” Zuko said passionately.
“What are you a polar dog puppy? Oh, oh. I’ll be right back,” Katara doubled over laughing then screeched before running into the closest building. Zuko followed then stopped abruptly when he saw her running into the restroom.
He waited awkwardly in the hallway then barged in when he heard screaming.
“Can’t fight your own battle Fire Nation whore!” a large unkempt woman wearing a hog monkey pelt screamed at Katara while swinging a sword at her.
“Stop, I don’t want to fight you!” she screamed back, “Please just put down your weapon and go back to your people.”
“What people? The ones who died fighting the Fire Nation in Ba Sing Se or the ones who are on the run for doing so? My cousin lost her restaurant earlier this morning because of you! My family and I no longer have a place to go thanks to you and that silly little Avatar we trusted. He didn’t even know his own companion was a Fire Nation sympathizer” she yelled thrusting her sword while charging Katara. She was engulfed in flames after taking two steps.
Zuko looked from his hands to the woman that Katara was trying her best to heal then back to his hands. Katara was screaming for him to turn on the water in the faucets, but he could only stare at his hands. He interfered with a one on one fight between two women. He attacked from her behind. Katara had put out the fire, but woman had stopped wheezing. She was dead. He killed her.
Katara looked at him in horror, “You killed her.”
“I had to. She would have killed you. That sword move is called the Impaler. You wouldn’t have been able to heal yourself. She would have killed you. I had to. Please believe me, Katara. I had to,” Zuko insisted.
“You didn’t have to do anything! I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself. She’s dead because of you!” Katara fired back angrily.
“I know she is. I didn’t mean to kill her. I just saw that you were in danger and reacted. I didn’t mean to kill her; I only wanted to protect you. I’ve never killed anyone. Katara, please you have to believe me, I didn’t mean to kill her. It was an accident. I just saw her running at you with that sword. She was going to kill you. I couldn’t let that happen,” Zuko said kneeling down beside the dead woman and grabbing Katara’s hand.
Katara knocked it away and continued trying to heal her, “Don’t touch me you monster. You disgust me. You’re nothing but a murdering rapist.”
“Katara, no it’s not like that. I didn’t mean to,” Zuko stammered
“You’re pathetic Zuko. Always going on about honor, but you attack a woman from behind. What kind of man does that? You’re nothing but a coward, a pathetic little coward not even worth his sister’s respect or his daddy’s love. No wonder you were banished. I wouldn’t want to claim a disgusting spineless worm like you for a relative either,” she said venomously
“Shut up Katara! I did it to protect you!” Zuko explained.
“You don’t want to protect me. You don’t give a damn about me. If you did you never would have had the ridiculous idea of making me your concubine. This whole scheme is nothing but a pitiful excuse to get laid because you’re a hideous pariah that can’t get a woman otherwise.”
“Shut up!” Zuko screamed as Katara’ words cut into him
“Your own fiancée doesn’t even want you and I can’t blame her one single bit. I wish you would have let her kill me, then I wouldn’t have to swallow my bile while I lay beneath you or resist the urge to scrub my own skin off wherever you touched me.”
“Shut up Katara! Please just shut up!” Zuko screamed covering his ears with his hand and shaking his head.
Katara snatched his arms away and spat in his face, “Dying would have been preferable to living as your walking fuck toy. At least then I would still have some dignity and self-respect instead of having to spend another moment in your presence or commit another act of bestiality in your bed. Your touch sickens me Zuko. You sicken me. You can stop pretending to be human. I know you’re nothing but a monster underneath; a murdering raping monster.”
