Chapter 127
Zuko had gotten halfway back to town when they were met by a small squad of soldiers on Komodo rhinos. Korhi sat in the middle of them saddled and ready; a small pair of wrist chains were draped across her saddle, “Prince Zuko, we have been sent to escort you and the prisoner back to the ship. There was a skirmish with a few members of the resistance.”
“Very well, I need to return the ostrich horses.” Zuko replied staidly.
Katara kept an eye out for familiar faces as they rode back to the livery stable. The merchant was visibly rattled to see them and explained he ran a legitimate business that supported the Fire Nation. He relaxed when Zuko explained they were only returning their rented mounts.
“Zuko, will you ask the guards if my brother and Aang were injured in the skirmish? Were they able to escape or if they were taken back to the Ursa?” Katara asked acting as thought she didn’t recognize the boy mucking out the stalls or the man who took the animals’ reigns while praying they got the hint as Zuko clamped the cuffs over her wrists.
Zuko tested the chains binding her and asked the livery owner for a pair of blinders. He tied them on her head, blocking her peripheral vision and snorted, “Nice try, Katara.”
Tyro had nodded subtly and called to Haru, “Boy, stop gawking. You’re supposed to be cleaning the stall not spreading crap. At the rate you’re going I’ll have these animals ready for the next trip and you’ll still be knee deep in shit.”
Katara lowered her head in a single nod letting the tears fall freely down her face. Tyro had understood her message otherwise he wouldn’t have spoken to Haru like that.
Yes, Father,” Haru said biting his lips sullenly at his father’s scolding about spreading crap and being knee dip in shit. He stole another glance at Katara. She didn’t look sad or concerned or any of the ways she’d looked on the prison ship. She was crying but she looked just as relaxed as she had when she left his bedroom.
They made it to the ship without incident. Zuko took her with him to the stables to curry Korhi. She found a place where Zuko could still see her and held her brother’s hand through the bars of his cell. She couldn’t say anything about meeting Haru and Tyro to Sokka so she began lightly squeezing his fingers. When she was younger she would cry incessantly on the nights of the full moon. Sokka would hold her hand and squeeze her fingers fingers as way of letting her know everything would be okay. Sokka smiled at her and squeezed hers in return.
Zuko put up the brush and liniment and walked forward, “I’m finished Katara, we’re leaving.”
She reluctantly let go of Sokka’s hand and followed Zuko as the prince pulled the chains binding her wrist.
Azula began clapping when they walked past one of the conference rooms on the ship, “Well, Zuzu. I see you made it back. What’s the matter peasant? Upset we spoiled your picnic?”
Zuko stopped when he saw the Admiral and the ship’s officers in the room with Azula. He led Katara inside, “What are you talking about?”
“Oh you don’t know? Why don’t you tell him, Waterbender,” Azula probed.
Katara frowned in confusion, “Tell him what? We had a picnic.”
Azula smiled, “Really, what type of herbs did you buy at the market? A little birdie told me some of them were poison.”
“Can you blame me? You’d want to kill yourself too if you were raped every night.” Katara shot back angrily.
“If you’re planning to kill yourself why did you buy wraps and contraceptive herbs?” Mai asked shrewdly.
“It’s not something that can be easily done. It has to be something definitive or else my resolve is undermined by my self-preservation instincts. As for the other, I started my cycle,” Katara morosely admitted.
Zuko placed his hand under her chin and tilted her head to look at him, “Katara have you tried to…?”
She closed her eyes since she was unable to turn away from him; she was a Waterbender, drowning herself should have been easy.
“As happy as your death will make Mai, I need you to answer a few questions,” Azula barked at her before looking at the doorway, “Perfect timing Ty Lee.”
“Now that the both of you are here, who does this belong to?” Azula asked lifting a green headband.
Katara’s eye widened but Sokka’s face betrayed nothing.
“So you do know it,” Azula declared. “I’ll repeat my question, how was your picnic?”
Zuko’s jaw clenched, “So you were the ones that had us followed. I noticed the glare from the spyglass.”
Admiral Chu-hua leveled a steady gaze at him, “Really, did you happen to see who was behind it? I sent soldiers to find you after someone foolishly started a fight as a diversion to free the Avatar. They found the trail of your ostrich horse and the footprints of someone running the same direction on the cliffs. You two were coming out of the water when my soldiers attacked. The men disappeared underground.”
She added curtly, “Prince Zuko, my men did not have a spyglass. They found it and that headband lying on the dirt. They decided to stay above you to keep the high ground in case you were attacked. When did you first notice you were being watched?”
“I noticed after we got the horses and were halfway to the spot Katara suggested for our outing,” Zuko admitted.
“You let her choose the spot?” Azula frowned, “So tell me were you planning to ambush him with your accomplices?”
“No, we thought you ordered the Dai Li to follow us and cause a rockslide so our deaths would look like an accident so I took us out to a sandbar,” Katara replied.
Azula tapped her chin with her fingers, “Plausible idea. I admit the plan does have its merits. Pity I didn’t think of it.”
Mai was unable to hold her words, “What is wrong with you, Zuko? You won’t even talk to me, but you let her choose a picnic location in the middle of the water? You jumped into the bay with a Waterbender who wants to kill you?”
“Katara won’t kill me. She knows she’d be signing her brother’s death certificate. Isn’t that right, Sweetie?” Zuko said confidently and kissed her on the forehead.
“As infuriating as I find the love lives of spoiled teenagers, how long do you think you were being watched?” Admiral Chu-hua interrupted.
“I’m not sure,” Zuko admitted sheepishly.
“Neither am I,” Katara said looking at the floor.
“Oh for the love of Agni, please tell me you two really weren’t having a picnic while an unknown but suspected hostile person was spying on you?” the commander acting as ship’s first mate yelled.
Zuko and Katara had the good sense to look guilty.
The man turned his attention to Sokka and leered, “What about you, boy? Do you know the owner of this headband? You had a good view of the town square did you see anyone you recognized?”
“No,” Sokka replied curtly.
“Ty Lee isn’t there some type of way to read people’s auras to see if they are lying?” Azula bluffed.
“What?” The acrobat said before catching herself, “Oh, yeah. They’re lying. Both of them, total liars.”
“They know whose it is. Don’t you cutie?” Ty Lee said poking Sokka in the belly button.
“What is his name, Katara?” Zuko asked authoritatively.
“I don’t know,” she replied.
“You don’t know or don’t want to admit that one of your comrades saw what we did today? How about I tell your brother? Don’t you think Sokka wants to know what his little sister did today?” he threatened.
She looked up at him, eyes wide, “Zuko don’t.”
“Then give me a name and your brother will never know,” Zuko said harshly.
Katara shook her head, “I can’t.”
Zuko removed the blinders he tied to her head earlier and loosened the bindings on her hands then turned her head towards Sokka, “Can’t or won’t? Look at your brother, Katara. Don’t you think he’ll be interested to know what these hands were up to before I chained them?”
Katara tried to turn her head away but Zuko’s grip on her chin was firm. He turned her so that her back was against his front and he stepped closer to her. “Give me the name.”
“No!” Katara barked. Then realized she had just admitted to knowing the name of the person who owned the headband.
“I thought you didn’t know him,” Zuko said, as his hand began steadily creeping up her stomach towards her breast, “Tell me his name or your brother finds out just what your friends found so interesting that they decided to watch the show rather than try to rescue you.”
He smiled viciously, “Sokka, did you know that your sister fits perfectly in my lap?”
“I thought it was my imagination until this afternoon when she straddled me without being asked to. She just sat right down and made herself comfortable on my crotch. I’m not complaining, but normally she’s not so forthcoming. Forthcoming, that’s a good word don’t you think so Katara?” Zuko inquired huskily after nipping her earlobe. He ran his tongue over the shell of her ear and whispered, “Don’t you think you were forth coming today?”
Zuko removed his shirt, “See not a single mark. Well I do have a few scratches on my back and love bites on my front, but that’s to be expected considering how much Katara enjoyed-”
“Shut up Zuko!” Katara yelled snapping her head back to silence him.
Sokka frowned. Zuko was right. He did look different. Every time he’d seen Zuko since they’d been captured the other boy looked like he’d been fighting. There were always several bruises and scratches on his face and neck. Now his face was clear of any marks, but there were hickeys on his neck and chest. Katara had healed him and sucked on him.
There were few times in his life when Sokka used what he called his big brother voice, but his words dripped with sibling authority as he told her, “Don’t say anything else, Katara.”
“What’s the matter, Katara? Don’t want your brother to know you initiated what we did this afternoon or that you actually like riding my dragon?” Zuko taunted as he slid his face against hers.
“Shut up Zuko. Sokka don’t listen to him. He’s lying,” Katara pled as Zuko’s hands roamed her body pulling her closer to him.
Zuko laughed and looked at the Water Tribe boy’s expression. “I don’t think he believes you, Katara. These passion marks speak for themselves. Your brother knows that your mouth has been all over me. I bet he would like to know what else was all over me too?”
Zuko stopped talking to Katara and addressed Sokka instead, “I’m sure you don’t know this, but your sister makes these little sounds when she gets excited. At first it’s slow deep breathing like someone who’s just fallen asleep. Then they start to get fas-”
“Shut up, Zuko!” Katara screamed as she once again attempted to headbutt Zuko. Sokka was starting to look at her like something he’d found on the bottom of his shoe.
“-ter and so does the way her body moves. The things this girl can do with her hips. Sokka, I’m telling you. You drew the short straw when she was born as your sister,” Zuko continued as he rolled his pelvis against Katara’s backside.
“Don’t say a word, Katara,” Sokka growled angrily. His expression was getting darker and darker but his glare wasn’t directed at Zuko. He was still looking at her.
“She starts making these little high pitched whimpers and moans when she’s close. That’s when she starts scratching and biting. It’s like she’s trying to just pull everything inside her. When she com-”
“HARU! His name is Haru!” Katara sobbed unable to take the growing look of disproval in Sokka’s eyes.
