Chapter Two: Stunning Revelations
The car went quiet, only the sounds of the engine and the radio blaring some obscure rock tune keeping it from being completely silent.
Stan wasn’t sure what to make of the red head’s statement. Surely he was joking…? Right?
Kenny seemed to have read his mind as he chuckled nervously. “Ha, that’s…that’s a good one, Kyle. Man, what a joke. Like Cartman of all people would try to off himself…seriously, dude!” He punched the other teen on the shoulder playfully. “Good one.”
Stan found himself chuckling unsurely. “Yeah, man. I can see Cartman trying to kill someone else, but he would never try to end his own life! He enjoys being a dick far too much.”
As he spoke, he felt surer of this. It had to just be some odd joke that Kyle was playing on them…He stared at the other’s tense shoulders and the way his lips formed a terse, thin line. “It…it is just a joke, right Kyle?”
Kyle blinked jerkily and wet his lips before running his teeth over his bottom lip. “I wish I were, guys. I really, really do.” He glanced from the road to look at Stan, then up to see Kenny in his rearview mirror before focusing on the road once more.
Stan shared a look with Kenny. “But…but…why?”
Kyle sighed and gripped the steering wheel a bit tighter. He looked exhausted. “That’s what we’re going to go figure out.”
Kenny shifted uncomfortably. “No offense, man, I’m just as curious as you…but…” He looked pleadingly at Stan, who finished the sentence for him. “But why the hell do you think he’d talk to us about it?”
Kenny nodded. “Yeah. None of us parted in the best of ways.”
Kyle shook his head. “I know that.” He glanced sadly at Stan, who looked away ashamedly. “I know that…but, I got over it. We three managed to make up, right? So…so, why not try to make amends with Cartman as well? I mean, we were practically fucking inseparable in Grade school and Junior High…”
“Most of Junior High.” Stan corrected. “Things…things sort of went to hell towards the end of it.”
Kenny nodded, folding his arms over the back of the driver’s seat. “Yeah, man. When you announced that you were leaving to go to that Prep school, things changed. We all started bitching at each other, and Cartman sort of just…grew distant and angrier, like he couldn’t stand the sight of any of us...then a few weeks into summer, after you left, his Mom packed him up and left.”
“Really?” Kyle asked quietly. “I…I knew Stan and I had fought. I…I didn’t really think about how it would affect Cartman…or you, Kenny.” He glanced in the mirror, apologetically.
Kenny shrugged indifferently. “Don’t worry about it. Life’s never certain. I didn’t think any of us would be “friends forever.”” He glanced to Stan, and back to Kyle. “So…what did happen between you and Stan? You two stopped talking a long time before you actually left.”
Stan stared out his window, laying his forehead against the pane miserably. “That was my fault.”
Kyle looked over at him, sadly. “It was both our faults.”
The brunette shook his head. “No, Kyle. I was a dickhead. I…You were my best friend, man. I felt like you were abandoning me. Leaving me to face High School alone.” He smiled bitterly. “If I’d of been more reasonable I would have realized that I could still talk to you…You might have even been able to hang at South Park over the summers. I was stupid.”
He looked back to the red head, who was staring at him. “I’m sorry, man.”
Kyle smiled, an honest to god smile that spoke volumes…as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He didn’t look so tired anymore. “It’s alright, dude.”
“Uh…before you guys start hugging or some gay shit like that, could you pay attention to the road, please?” Kenny quipped anxiously. He had managed to avoid being in any accidents for nearly two years; he wanted to keep it that way.
Kyle jerked the wheel so that they were in the right lane again. “Sorry, sorry!” He fretted, and concentrated on the road once more.
Kenny gave a sigh of relief before leaning back into the comfortable leather seats of Kyle’s blue Yaris. “Damn. I’m still having a hard time picturing a suicidal Cartman. It…it just doesn’t fit in with the memories I have of him.”
Stan nodded, propping a foot up on the dash. “Yeah, man. It’s crazy.”
They drove in companionable silence for a moment as they passed a sign that welcomed them to North Park.
“So…how’d you find out? I mean, Kenny and I would have never known if you hadn’t of told us.” Stan asked curiously.
Kyle looked awkward for a moment, a small blush forming on his cheeks. “His Mom called me. She said…she said that Cartman was always talking about me. That he’d want me to know.” He glanced at Stan. “How weird is that?”
Stan just blinked confusedly. “Why the hell would Cartman want you to know? He barely tolerated you, and practically hated you when you left.”
“I know, it doesn’t make any se—“ Kyle’s sentence was cut off by Kenny’s sudden bout of laughter. “What?” He asked the blonde irritably.
“Fuck, man! He mentioned…but I didn’t think…!” He dissolved into laughter once more, holding onto his ribs.
Stan scowled at him, as Kyle tried his best to do the same by looking at the laughing teen from the rearview mirror. “Spit it out, Kenny.” Stan demanded.
Kenny sat up, eagerly. “The beginning of senior year of Junior High…” He glanced at Kyle, “a few months before you broke the news about leaving.” He looked to Stan. “Cartman was talking to me about, you know, sex and stuff.”
Stan nodded. “Of course, you were the resident expert on the subject.”
Kenny grinned. “Yeah, well, he asked me if I ever noticed guys. I told him yeah, that there was nothing wrong with that.” His grin broadened. “He left, looking really relieved. I figured he had started noticing guys in the locker room or something, but the thought never crossed my mind that he was noticing someone in particular…”
Stan’s eyes widened, “You don’t mean…” He turned to look at Kyle, who looked like a deer caught in the headlights, knuckles unbelievably white against the black steering wheel.
Kenny smirked, nodding. “I think Cartman had the hots for Kyle and never got over it.”
Author’s Note:
Lawl. There are going to be many pairings in this fic. You should know two, just by reading this chapter. =3
So, why DID Cartman try to kill himself? Is it something to do with these supposed feelings for Kyle? Or something else? I’d love to hear your opinions. 83
Also, I’m looking for a beta…anyone interested?
