Reviews for Borealis: A Zutara Story

Wow, I have a lot to say about this story. At times, I felt physically ill reading this but for some reason I continued. Maybe the strength of your writing and the world building. Zuko and Katara's relationship wow. It goes through this cycle where they have consensual sex and seem to be getting along but then outside factors cause Zuko to rape her or Katara starts to descent into self-loathing and lashes out at Zuko. It's so terrible but I don't see how they can be with anyone else aside from each other. Zuko has raped her multiple times which is sick but he was truly helping to protect her from the conduct we have seen from other privileged nobles. Those nobles as he's said multiple times would treat her much worse than Zuko. I don't doubt that Zuko loves her and I feel that at this point Katara loves him too. But Zuko is an abused, traumatized child with a very strange and violent family history. While Katara is also deeply traumatized person with a complex that her culture's ways are the only right way. You have Zuko's family and even dieties themselves remarking about how they were made for each other. Zuko's Water Tribe ancestors and Katara's Fire Nation ancestor also ties them together. But they've hurt each other in so many ways. They both have been physically violent towards each other and even though Zuko is physically aroused by those instances they don't occur in the space of mutual sexual understanding. You have Katara playing mind games with him by being very open about her goals of killing him eventually (Zuko doesn't value his own life but still it's jarring) and the fact that it was she who aborted their child. I know Katara is on a crusade to eventually kill Zuko but what value does that have when he doesn't value his own life. I feel like it would be a better strategy for her to spend the rest of her life with him denying him love even though she loves him too but is too proud. And yet, they support each other and truly understand each other in a way other people don't. You've darkened the war by having the Water Tribes also commit atrocities and having Katara and Sokka be happy at seeing a massacre of Fire Nation people. Yes, the Fire Nation also does those things but an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. You've also made Ozai more human by giving him a deep obsession for his wife/tragic death and showing that in his twisted mind he thinks he's helping his kids. Azula is also slowly losing her mind. Iroh is in the wind with Toph but he himself is deeply tied to the oppressive regime. He's hurt and killed foreigners along with Fire Nation people. You've also shown time and time again that Zuko and Katara are both actually powerless. You have Chung-hua who will kill Sokka and Katara and even Zuko to achieve her goals. You have Ozai who will likely kill them along with Zuko's cousins because Zuko killed the scientists. You have Katara's people who will definitely not accept her because of the things she has done and had done to her. I know that you've been playing around with whether they will have children. But Zuko's visions, the doctor saying she may be able to, and even Katara berating Mai by saying she will help her child gain the throne over Mai's children all point towards her and Zuko eventually having a child. I know this won't end happily ever after but I hope they will end as happily as possible. They can never go back to the old world, after the war everything will change even mationsl borders and cultures become blended. These characters need to accept that they can never go back to the past and have to make a life from the broken pieces of their present. At their core, Zuko and Katara are both terribly broken people and I feel that they are now codependent and really cannot live separately from each other.

Hi, I absolutely love this story. I found it back in highschool and read all of it up to the latest chapter at the time, I think it was 290 or so. Anyway i took a look at it again about a month ago, and am up to speed with 311. I really hope this story keeps going and gets finished at some point. It'd be a shame if it was abandoned after years of work. There is one thing I would like to suggest, and that's more description for new characters, especially OC's. Aside from that, I would like to congratulate you on such a good story, and i look forward to the next update.

Thank you so much for the update, I though you have abandoned the story. Wow the update includes some of really dark parts. You are really destroying Katara, but also teaching Zuko to take care of things he really loves.

    Welcom Back!!!

Chapter 299: Poor Katara having to sit around as they plan to sack another city, even if its just to find the ones who killed some of there people. She knows whats gonna happen and can do nothing.

WOW that got dark, it may of been a mercy cimpared to what would have been done to them but still, DARK. New chapter, new found hate for fire nation.

Wow creepy prophecy there eh?. And damn the old evil creepy broad has some moves.

Chapter 300: Welp, the dark times they keep a coming. Small act oif mercy by Chu-hua of all people, if only just slightly.

-Dang Katara just cant catch a break, even when she tries to do some good it backfires in some way that results in pain for another.

-And Zuko still on that delusion that she would want to be even further associated with his people after all the things she has seen them do.

-And Zuko is so indoctrined that he just accepts it as a way of life.

    chapter 301:

-NICE another update.......aaaaand still spiraling down this dark ass tunnel lol. You have certainly returned with a vengeance.

-The balls on katara my God. She saw what this women was capable of and still had the stones to say what she would do to the fire nation.

-And there thats FN hypocrisy and lack of understanding the term 'karma'. They commit God knows how many war crimes but its just par the course as far as they'er concerned, someone does it back to them?, Oh then they are viscious criminals.

-gah two steps forward, three steps back Katara. He is the last guy you should be getting advice from.

    Chapter 302:

-Okay not so dark this time around it seems.

-okay nce breather chapter and Katara trying to discover who she was, is, and could be.

    Again welcome back.

This story is a bold, fascinating new take on the Avatar world and I enjoy reading it very much but it can also be very, very depressing.

Katara is never going to give up or assimilate with the Fire Nation, which means that she's never going to be more than a 'resisting captive'. This limits her ability to help anyone that is not Fire Nation to taking drastic steps (like howling like a wolf) that then forces Zuko to do something that puts their relationship into new lows.

Then there follows a 6-12 chapter cycle of Zuko and Katara being depressed and violent towards one another, death threats from Katara and Katara eventually finding a pragmatic reason to tolerate Zuko again. There's very little sense of advancement in their relationship, just an endless cycle, with each cycle resulting in more shame and guilt piled onto Zuko and more bitterness and 'drastic-ness' piled onto Katara.

Zuko always seems to be reacting to things that happen around him and (other than the occasional picnic) never seems to show any initiative. Contrast this with Azula, who's always up to SOMETHING, and Zuko almost seems like he's passively coasting along in life until something causes him to violently attack someone or other.

If it wasn't for his friends and allies actively helping him and his ability to make public speeches once in a while, there'd be absolutely no contest that Azula has more leadership qualities. Will we ever see 'active' Zuko in this story?

    Yay, you are back! :)
As always I really love your lore. Was the doctor on the Ursa wrong about Katara getting children? Somehow I wish Katara still can bear children, but I'm not sure if Zuko will ever deserve such gift.
Your description of the effects of a war were disturbing, but also sadly realistic.

I hope you will update sooner next time, I really thought you abandoned the story, which sadly happens more often than not.

    Welcome back

    chapter 291:

-Iroh and Toph getting me all choked up over here.

huh surprisingly no tragedy or rage inducing moments in this chapter.....oh god what are you planning.

    chapter 292:

-Holy info dump batman! But it did give us some tidbits on her life so understandable.

-AH so this is why the last chapter was so low on the angst scale lol.

Meh, Karma. Seriously if they had not committed countless atrocities and visisted misery on so many I 'might' feel some sympathy but this blowback has been a long time coming. Katara is a much better person than I am too not throw a parade or do a victory dance. You don't start a war and conquer land and not expect the locals to never come looking for some payback.

    chapter 293:

Wow you went balls to the wall with these updates. creepy funeral procession.

    chapter 294:

-Huh, that Villager has an odd way of looking at things, being grateful that the fire nations actions keep sending them victims of the war to maintain their population? Unless I read that wrong.

-admittedly it was smart to give up the ones who destroyed the FN colony, certainly keeps their asses out of the fire.

-And fire nation moral dissonance and hypocrisy raises it head again.

-Clever move by Katara, it's a mercy in comparison to what the men would have faced otherwise.

    Chapter 295:

    - “We. Got. You.” Jesus they might as well have Earthbent a giant middle finger and left it there lol. Tide is starting too turn.

-Loving this whole spiritual/mythology angle you got going on.

-Wow Azula is a little shit.

-Zuko still off in his own little world despite knowing Katara's feelings on him and his people.

--sigh- Katara, falling again into the temptations of the flesh. Comfort is comfort I suppose though.

Again, glad too see you back, been a while. Can't wait for the next chapter.
