It had been hard for Hamato Yoshi, Tang Shen and their daughter, Miwa, to adjust to their new life in Brooklyn—after all, they were an immigrant family from Japan. And when you enter a new country and apply for citizenship there, you're bound to face some challenges adjusting to life there, because it's not the same as the country you were born in. Both Yoshi and Tang Shen knew this.
It was even harder adjusting considering what had happened the night before they left for America, for the memories were burnt into their minds forever. The fight, the fire—how Tang Shen had thrown herself in front of her husband, only for Oroku Saki's spikes to strike her instead, leaving three scars on her back. It was a miracle that Tang Shen had lived, despite the deep wounds she had received—even more so when the couple found their daughter in the same exact spot her mother had left her in, with no signs of any harm done to the infant, thankfully.
That night had changed their lives completely, and it left them with no choice but to move to New York to start a new life. It was for the best, because in the end, who knows what Saki would've done had he found out that Tang Shen was alive, and still raising a daughter with him? Would he have tried to hurt Miwa as a way of getting back at Yoshi and Shen? They just couldn't take any chances.
At least it wasn't hard to Miwa to adjust as much as it was for her parents, thanks to the fact that she was an infant when they moved. Sure, the first month was hard, considering how noisy it was in Brooklyn even in the night, but eventually Miwa had begun sleeping more easily near the beginning of the second month. As months passed, as she grew into a toddler, it was clear that little Miwa was happy with life in New York—and that was all that Yoshi and Tang Shen could wish for their daughter. Seeing the toddler run around the park brought a smile to her parents' faces, warming their hearts as well.
Eventually, after a year had passed, Tang Shen and Yoshi adjusted to their new life in Brooklyn. Yoshi found himself a job with a payment that would be enough for him to support his family, while Tang Shen would go out to the store and buy food along with other necessary supplies with Miwa. Things seemed to look better for them in Brooklyn than it did in Japan, even if their living conditions were different in America—there was nothing more they could ask for.
Until one night, when Yoshi had carried a tired Miwa to her bedroom, Tang Shen couldn't help but watch, finding herself yearning for something—upon seeing her husband tuck in their daughter, Tang Shen found herself yearning for another child. She wanted to experience the feeling of holding a baby again—caring for an infant, watching as they grew up; she wanted to relive that again, but she knew she couldn't do it with Miwa now, as the little girl was no longer a baby. Tang Shen loved taking care of her daughter, but the way she raised her now was different that how she had raised her a year ago—taking care of a toddler is different than taking care of a baby.
Aside from that, Tang Shen felt like her family was a little small compared to others she'd seen in the past year of living in New York. She had seen families with more than one child—whether it was two children, three, four or even fire—and every time, she would look at her family and feel as if it were incomplete. Tang Shen felt as if there was something missing, something important…like another child. It just didn't feel right for her to only stop at one child, especially since almost every other kid at the park had at least one sibling, while Miwa was an only child.
Miwa had even asked her mother one day why she was an only child when all the other kids she saw playing in the park had siblings. "I don't get it," the little girl had said. "Why am I the only child?"
Tang Shen had been surprised at her daughter's question, but told her in response: "Some families just have one child, for many reasons."
Shen was thankful Miwa didn't ask any questions pertaining to that topic after that, but her child's words never left her memory.
Sometimes, Shen wanted to ask Yoshi his opinion on having a second child, but she didn't want to ask it out of the blue only for him to (possibly) move around the topic. Then again, they'd never really talked about it before, so really, what did she have to lose.
Still, it wouldn't be appropriate to randomly ask him a question like that, so Shen planned on asking Yoshi on Friday once he came home from work, when they'd both settle down and have their usual conversation.
And so, the week went by. When it was finally Friday, Tang Shen couldn't help but feel anxious as she looked at the clock, waiting for her husband to arrive home. What would he say in response to her question? There were so many possibilities, but she knew one thing was certain: she couldn't keep it in any longer. She had to tell him, even if he ended up saying no—she would've at least let her thoughts out. That was all that mattered.
Shen finally heard their apartment door opening. She walked over, and there Yoshi was. "Welcome home, Yoshi," she said quietly. The woman mentally cursed herself once she realized how shaky her voice was. Damn it, Shen! You had to ruin the atmosphere already!
"Tang Shen," Yoshi said, once he took notice of the change in her voice's tone, "is there something wrong?"
"Well…" Shen trailed off for a moment, not sure how to respond.
"What happened?" her husband asked. "Are you alright? And Miwa – how is she?"
"Miwa is fine," she answered, gesturing to her daughter's room. "She's in her room. And I am fine – physically, at least."
While Yoshi was relieved to hear that nothing bad had happened to his daughter and wife while he was away, he still was concerned for his wife upon hearing the last sentence. "Something is on your mind – something that is troubling you," he guessed. "What is it?"
Tang Shen sighed. "Alright, I'll tell you." She beckoned for him to follow her into the living room, and so he did. When they sat down together, Tang Shen began, "So we've been living here for a year now. And during our time here, I've seen many different types of families. However, one thing I've noticed about these families is that they usually have more than one child. After a while, I couldn't help but feel like our family was incomplete, like we were missing something…like, another family member."
Shen took a deep breath before finally saying, "I want another child, Yoshi."
The man looked at his wife with a shocked look on his face. He didn't expect her to say something like this, but he knew from how she'd said it, she was serious. "You want another baby," he said. It wasn't a question, but it wasn't really a statement either.
"Yes," Shen said. "Is that a problem…?" She thought to herself, Maybe I shouldn't have said anything after all.
But her worries ceased once a smile made its way across Yoshi's face. "Of course not," the man said. "I would be lying if I said I didn't want the same thing."
"You mean…?"
"Maybe a new addition to the family isn't a bad idea—in fact, it sounds rather nice."
"Oh, thank you, Yoshi." Tang Shen hugged him tightly.
Yoshi returned the hug, before pressing a kiss to his wife's cheek.
Tang Shen pulled away from the hug, and stared into her husband's eyes, while he stared into hers. Yoshi gestured to their bedroom, raising an eyebrow as if he were to ask Shen if she wanted to 'make do like rabbits.' Shen caught onto what her husband meant and let out a laugh, before nodding.
And so, they headed to their bedroom, closing the door behind them. The two helped each other rid themselves of their clothing – and before they knew it, their clothes were scattered across the floor while the two of them were now in bed.
"Are you really sure you want this?" Yoshi asked suddenly. "We can wait and try some other time, if you're not ready now—"
Tang Shen interrupted him by pressing her lips against his. After a few minutes, when they pulled apart, she said: "Yes, I'm sure."
"Alright," was all Yoshi said.
And soon enough, the couple gave into their desires that night. Their bodies entwined, skin pressed against skin, the burning passion felt as he sunk himself inside of her – it was a moment they would never regret, for sure.
In the morning, Yoshi awoke first. He looked down and saw that Tang Shen had rested her head on his chest. He kissed her forehead, and then wiped some sweat off his forehead.
Tang Shen's eyes opened, and she looked up at Yoshi. "Good morning, Yoshi," she whispered, smiling.
"Good morning, my love," he whispered back. "Sleep well?"
"Oh, yes. I slept very well." Shen then paused, before placing a hand on her belly. She knew that she wouldn't know for sure if her and Yoshi's attempt worked or not until weeks later in the month, but all she knew now was that there was the possibility that a little life was growing inside of her. Filled with hope, she thought, I hope they will rest well, too, so they can have a chance to grow.
