Benjamin Clawhauser sat behind the front desk of the ZPD, nearly vibrating with anticipation as the clock ticked down the minutes to the end of office hours. He shoved a pawful of cheese puffs into his mouth nervously as he waited, barely aware of his tail standing tall behind him, bushy and trembling with excitement. Today was the day. He was finally going to ask Judy to have dinner with him. That sweet little bunny had captured his heart like no other since Gazelle, and he was going to give it a chance.
He could hardly wait, he had planned out the whole thing over the last couple of weeks, making sure that every detail was absolutely perfect. That little bunny was just so darned cute; he couldn’t even stand it! ‘Oh, no no, not cute—adorable!’ he mentally chided himself and reached into the bowl of cheese puffs to continue his nervous eating. His paw found only glass and cheese dust as he searched, and he glanced over with furrowed brows and his lips pursed in disappointment.
The bell that signaled work’s end startled him, and he let out a shrill giggle, paws tucking up under his chin as he jittered happily. The few animals already leaving the building gave him a few odd looks and shook their heads, chalking it up as just something that the cheetah was wont to do.
He had to make sure he looked good though. He pulled up his phone in camera-mode and used it as a mirror, brushing the orange dust off from his lips, cheeks, and chin. In the middle of licking the cheesy deliciousness from his fingers, he spied Judy from the corner of his eye, already heading out the doors of the ZPD building with her partner, Nick, in two.
“Oh, goodness!” He fumbled with his phone, dropping it on his desk as he ran out of the building after Judy. If he didn’t catch her and ask her now, he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to. Boy, was she fast though. As he pushed open the door, she was already a ways down the sidewalk, a hop in her step as she chatted with the fox a few paces behind her.
“Judy! Judy, wait!” He jogged after her but was left panting and holding his side after a short ways. Chief Bogo kept telling him that if he lost some weight, he’d be able to run longer, but cheetahs were built for speed, not distance. He hunched over, winded, worried that the bunny hadn’t heard him calling out to her.
“Are you okay, Clawhauser?” Her voice startled him, and he glanced over at Judy, eye-to-eye with her in his bent position. She looked concerned, and an enamored smile spread across his lips as he felt her place a gentle paw on his shoulder.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he puffed, straightening up and grinning at her. “I was hoping to talk to you before you left for the day.” He wrung his paws together, hips wiggling with excited energy.
“Oh,” her purple eyes darted back towards Nick for a brief moment, the fox slouching contentedly against a nearby building. “Okay, sure. What did you want to talk about?” She smiled up at him, and he couldn’t help but mentally gush.
She was so kind and determined, and cu—adorable. How anyone couldn’t fall in love with that little bunny left him mystified. His inner musings must have been showing on his face as Judy shifted awkwardly, toeing the ground.
“Clawhauser?” she looked up at him uncomfortably, and he cleared his throat, giving her a sheepish smile. He must have been giving her dreamy eyes.
“Oh, Judy. I just wanted to say that everyone thinks you’re amazing! You solved all of the missing mammal cases; you found out why they were going savage, and you even caught the person behind it all!” He grinned at her, still awed at her bravery. “I mean, when you first got here I thought you’d be eaten alive, but you did it!”
“Thanks.” Judy looked both flattered and uneasy with his enthusiastic compliments, her cheeks pink and foot scraping the ground timidly.
“Anyway,” Clawhauser backpedaled, bringing himself back on track. “I was just hoping… that maybe you’d like to have dinner with me tonight.” He smiled at her hopefully with paws clasped together and shoulders bunched up. It felt like there were butterflies inside of his belly, and quite a lot of them for the size of it.
“Oh...” Judy looked up at him in surprise, her ears back in an emotion that Clawhauser couldn’t place. His hips stopped wiggling as she was silent, and his ears flattened. The butterflies even died.
“It’s… it’s alright if you don’t want to,” he blew a raspberry, “it’s no big deal.” He looked away from the bunny dejectedly, not wanting her to see the hurt clear in his eyes. He’d rather that she just said no than feel obligated to go to dinner with him. That would be so much worse than rejection. He’d rather go home and eat a whole pint of ice cream than that. There was cake batter with cookie dough chunks in his freezer that was just calling his name.
“No, Clawhauser, I’d love to. It sounds like it’ll be fun.” He felt Judy’s paw gently touching his own, and he looked back to her hopefully, a grin spreading as he saw her kind smile pointed up at him. She said yes! O-M-Goodness he could feel the excitement welling up within himself again.
“It’ll be so much fun! It’s going to be perfect.” He quivered happily and shoved his paw into his pocket, coming out with a slip of paper that he had prepared earlier in the day. “This is the address, how does 8 o’clock sound?” He gave Judy an embarrassed smile as she took the paper from him and looked at the orange dust that was now on her fingers.
“Oops,” he chuckled timidly and snorted. “Cheese puffs.” He gave his paw a few licks to clean off the rest of it before he wiped it on his uniform.
“8 o’clock sounds great, Clawhauser. I’ll see you then.” She smiled at him before she bounded off down the sidewalk, leaving him grinning to himself.
“See you then,” he whispered, purring happily as he watched her catch back up with Nick. Those two seemed to get along so well, how they talked and laughed together, and how Nick placed his paw on the small of Judy’s back as they walked off.
Clawhauser’s brows furrowed as he placed a paw over his mouth, lightly biting into his knuckles. Oh no, he wasn’t stepping on Nick’s toes was he? Were Nick and Judy already a couple? He should have asked, but there was no way he could now. That would be awkward, and they were already leaving. He sucked in a deep breath and headed home. He couldn’t worry too much about it; he had a dinner to prepare.
His home was a studio apartment a flew blocks away from the station, within walking distance so that he could at least get some exercise per day. The front door led directly into the open room, a large kitchen and dining room on the right side, and a small living room and enclosed bathroom on the left. First things first, he needed to take a nice hot shower.
He stripped as he walked to the bathroom, stopping on the way to slowly step out of his pants and briefs. He didn’t want to fall again, that had been embarrassing. He bundled up his uniform and brought it up to his nose, giving it a curious sniff.
“Yech.” He made a face and dumped the wad into the hamper outside of the bathroom door. He’d have to swap to his secondary uniform and do some laundry soon from the looks of the hamper. He opened the bathroom door and squeezed between it and the sink, sucking in his gut just to make it. He closed the door and let out his breath, his figure going back to its rotund form.
How cramped it was between the door and the sink was annoying, but the large, walk-in shower at the back wall made up for it. He showered quickly but carefully, making sure to clean every inch of fur and under every fold, the whole time ecstatic that Judy would be over in just a few hours. He washed with a scentless soap, hoping that his own musk might be more pleasing than the scent of artificial flowers.
He turned off the water and tapped a nearby button, spooking just slightly when the jets of air kicked on to blow his fur dry and fluffy. He purred to himself as he paused to look into the mirror hanging on the back of the door. Judy was so small, and he was so… large. Would she be able to look past it? She didn’t seem to mind his appetite at least.
“It’s going to be great. This dinner will convince her, Benjamin,” he reassured himself with a resolute smile and squeezed out of the bathroom again to dress into something nice and start making dinner. He had a lot of prep and cooking to do, and he wanted to make sure it was all finished by the time Judy came knocking on his door.
It was only a few minutes to 8 o’clock as Clawhauser set the little round table that served as his dining room off the kitchen. He meticulously set plates, silverware, napkins, and champagne flutes on opposite sides of each other, and a small round candle right in the middle to add a gentle glow to their dinner. He had thought about getting flowers, but Judy knew so much about plants, and he couldn’t tell the difference between a peony and a tulip.
He kept dinner warming in the oven and the champagne chilling in a nearby bucket of ice as he nervously sat on his side of the table, waiting for Judy to arrive. He was grinning, ears perky and body quivering earnestly for the first few minutes, but as five minutes became ten his grin started to fade, and as ten minutes became fifteen his ears had flattened, and his body had stilled. He bowed his head and stared at the table, blinking away approaching tears.
‘She said that she’d love to have dinner with me… I can’t believe Judy would just lie like that.’ He sniffled and wiped at his eyes as he stood from his chair. He was just about to take the champagne flutes from the table as he heard a soft knock at the door. His ears perked up at the sound, and he glanced at the door skeptically before he shuffled towards it, leaving the flutes in place.
It was Judy! She stood there, and embarrassed flush on her cheeks. The pink matched her evening dress beautifully, and Clawhauser couldn’t help but stare at her in awe. She was so gorgeous, and the thrill of having her actually show up for dinner had shoved away his feelings of doubt and despair completely.
“I’m so sorry I’m late, I had some trouble finding the place. I thought it would be a restaurant or something,” she said awkwardly, her shoulders raised sheepishly. “I tried calling.”
Clawhauser gasped and raised a paw to his mouth. “Oh, gosh. I left my phone at my desk.” He’d been so preoccupied about their date that he’d forgotten to pick his phone back up. He felt horrible having doubted Judy, but he shoved the feeling away with a broad smile. “But I’m glad you’re here. Come in, come in. Everything’s ready!” He chortled happily and gestured towards the table, closing the door behind her.
He bit his lip against the urge to giggle as he watched Judy smooth her dress beneath her and shyly sit at the table, her purple eyes glancing back at him. He dimmed the light just slightly and practically pranced up to the table. He felt amazing, and he hoped that Judy would enjoy their dinner together as much as he knew that he would.
He took their plates into the kitchen and pulled the food from the oven: salmon roasted with lemon, onions, and herbs with a side of steamed vegetables and brown rice. He carefully brought the filled plates to the table and placed them in front of both Judy and his own chair before he fetched the champagne. He gently worked the cork from the bottle, removing it with a barely audible pop and without any messy foaming.
Judy actually looked impressed with him, and it made his heart soar as he poured both of their drinks and finally sat down, lighting the candle last. He grinned at her, but it slowly faded as he noticed her awkward smile and how she poked at the food in front of her.
“Is something wrong?” he asked, brows raised in worry as he worried his lower lip between his fangs.
“No, it’s all wonderful… I just… I don’t really eat fish. Or, you know, meat,” she said as she prodded the salmon with her fork, the look on her face less than pleased.
“Oh my gosh, I didn’t even think of that.” His ears flattened, and his shoulders dropped. He felt both silly and awful about it. “I’m so sorry, Judy… Here!” He quickly left for the kitchen.
“It’s okay, Clawhauser. I mean, some bunnies eat meat,” Judy offered as he came back with a third plate.
“They do not, Judy Hopps. You’re just trying to make me feel better,” he giggled and delicately scraped all of the vegetables and rice onto the new plate before placing both fish onto his own. He smiled as he placed the veggie plate back in front of her, glad when she giggled with him.
“Okay, so I don’t know any bunnies who do… but one of my brothers did eat a bug once.” She smiled back at him fondly, and he purred in delight.
“Ugh, that’s so gross,” he mumbled as he stuffed a bit of fish in his mouth, completely missing Judy’s wrinkled nose at his own eating habits. They ate in relative silence for a few moments until Judy picked up her champagne flute to take a sip, her nose twitching as the bubbles tickled it, making her laugh.
Clawhauser laughed with her as he took a drink of his own, the bubbly feel of the drink matching the feelings that bubbled up within him. He sighed wistfully at her, absentmindedly continuing to eat his fish as he watched her with dreamy eyes.
“You look so pretty in that dress, pink is so your color,” he said with a small smile, watching her fidget from the compliment.
“You look really nice, too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in anything but your uniform before,” Judy stated as she looked the cheetah over. He was wearing a formal green button-up and black dress pants; dressed up, but not overly so.
The rest of the meal was awkwardly silent, neither one of them sure what to talk about during their meal, although Clawhauser was content just to watch Judy enjoying hers. By the time they were finished, they had gone through the whole bottle of champagne, and Judy was quite a bit tipsy even though Clawhauser had drunk quite a bit more than the much smaller bunny across from him.
“Thank you, Clawhauser. You’re a pretty good cook.” Judy smiled at him, and he purred, setting a large paw gently on one of hers.
“You can call me Benjamin, you know… or just Ben,” he said softly, rubbing the pad of his thumb against her palm and smiling back at her shyly. “Do you want to watch a movie?” he asked with a wiggle, not wanting her to leave just yet. ‘Besides,’ he told himself, ‘she shouldn’t drive home like she is.’
“Okay… Ben.” She giggled a little from the champagne and gripped his paw tightly as he excitedly lead her to his futon. He had picked out the perfect movie for the night: “Pawcahontas”, the story of an early tribe of beavers fending off the invasion of wolves from across the sea, but despite it all, a beaver and wolf fall in love. It was so romantic.
He started the movie and sat on the futon with her eagerly, his legs crossed as his tail curled around the smaller bunny, still holding her paw. His heart was aflutter as they watched the movie together, but it nearly skipped a beat when she leaned into him, resting her head and free paw against his paunch.
His toes wiggled against each other delightedly, and he slowly let go of her paw to wrap his arm around her. He held her close, gently rubbing her fuzzy side.
“Benjamin,” she spoke softly, and he looked down at her, worried that maybe he had gotten too affectionate for her liking. But her large purple eyes were warm and admiring as she looked up at him, her long ears relaxed back contentedly. “You’re a really nice guy, you know.”
He flushed at the compliment and squeezed her a little closer. “And you’re a really amazing bunny, Judy.” He smiled but backpedaled quickly. “I don’t mean that you’re amazing because you're a bunny… or in spite of being a bunny, I just mean…” he flustered, but looked down to her affectionately. “You’re amazing, Judy, as an individual.”
She laughed at him, and his ears flattened. He knew he had blundered that up, but he didn’t think she’d make fun of him for it. He looked away from her slightly, tucking his chin down into his neck folds embarrassedly. He felt Judy standing up on the couch beside him and wondered if she was going to leave before he felt her paws settle on his chest, and her lips press against his own.
He gasped shakily and set his paw on her back, closing his eyes and moving his lips against hers. It was everything he had wanted it to be: soft and romantic with a little bit of nose rubbing. She was tender and sweet, and it was far more intoxicating than any champagne could manage.
Judy broke the kiss as she sat back down to catch her breath, softly nuzzling her head against his belly. This was absolute bliss. He purred loudly with closed eyes and a tender smile until he felt Judy’s paw drop below his belt. He gasped sharply as he felt Judy’s small paw grope him through his pants, a thrilled shiver running through his entire body.
“Oh! Goodness, Judy…” He looked down at her mischievous face. Whether her cheeks were still pink from the alcohol or what she was doing, he wasn’t sure, but he knew that he needed to be. He gently took her paw into his own, pulling it away from his lap. “We’ve had a lot to drink, and I’m not sure we’re thinking all that clearly,” he said softly, rubbing the back of her paw with his thumb. He wasn’t feeling the alcohol due to his large size, but he knew that it had gotten to the little bunny.
“I wouldn’t want anything to happen that you might regret.” He gave her a small kiss on her forehead, worried that her feelings for him might pass with the alcohol, but much more worried about taking advantage of her in the meantime. He couldn’t do that to her, even if it was his only chance at being with her.
“But, Ben!” Judy insisted, but he tenderly placed a finger against her lips.
“No ‘buts’, Judy. Let’s get some sleep, and we’ll see if you feel the same way in the morning,” he whispered, climbing off of the futon to adjust it into a sleeping position. He could see the disappointment on her face, but he tried not to let it get to him. He wasn’t one of those predators.
He turned off the tv and the movie as the credits were rolling, pulling out his pillow and blankets from underneath the futon to set up for Judy. He dimmed the lights the rest of the way to off and readied himself to sleep on the floor until he felt Judy’s paw on his cheek.
“At least cuddle with me?” Her brilliant purple eyes pleaded with him as much as her soft tone, and he felt some of his resolve melt.
“Okay, Judy.” He crawled onto the futon next to her, still fully clothed, and held her close as she nuzzled under his chin, her body curled up against his chest and belly. He purred as he slowly drifted off to sleep, content just to feel her next to him.
