The Reunion
“Knew I should’ve just slept in…”
Toph hated starting her day off like this as she walked into the crime scene. She knew the responsibilities that came with being named Chief of Police for Republic City, which is why she handpicked her own officers to assure she would have the best to work with. But it still didn’t change her having to deal with cases like this early in the morning. And it didn’t help that the crime scene was right outside Kwong’s Cuisine, a hotbed of criminal activity in Republic City.
She sighed hard as she approached her fellow officers. “Someone please tell me Yakone isn’t behind this.”
“No, he isn’t, boss.” Penga replied, turning to her Chief and former Metalbending teacher. “This attack happened late last night. No witnesses, one fatality and two put in the hospital.”
“Any statement from them?” Toph asked.
“We didn’t reach them in time, they checked themselves in.”
Toph sighed again. “Then I guess I’ll swing around there and get it myself. Anything else?”
“Just this, sir.” Ho Tam interjected, handing his Chief a piece of cloth. Toph was more surprised to see her largest officer out in the field, though.
“Finally decided to drop the desk work, huh?” She asked with a smirk.
“Actually, they were kinda short-handed on the beat.” He admitted.
“We’re still working on it, Chief.” Penga chimed in. “He’ll be a beat cop in no time.”
“Right, you two get on that.” Toph commanded. “I’m going to question the witnesses.”
It was at this moment the Metalbending Master was grateful for Republic City’s street structure. The closest hospital was just a few blocks away, and even though it only recently opened, she was sure that it was where the two wounded were taken. Toph was also semi-grateful for the case, giving her something to keep her mind off of her personal life. Her on-and-off again relationship with Kanto was switched to off, and she was in no hurry to turn it on anytime soon. Especially with the words they exchanged.
But she would worry about that later, right now she had assault and a murder to deal with. She ventured into the Hospital through the Emergency Room, and saw that it was fairly filled up. Half of the residents there Toph recognized from past cases, and they noticed her as well as they adverted their eyes, hoping she wasn’t there to haul them in. It gave her a warm feeling knowing that some of the scum and lowlifes in the world wanted no part of her in battle. But she refrained from using any fear tactics this time, as she didn’t have any warrant to back them up. What she did do was barge through the double doors and into the Patient Treatment Area, despite the objection of several Hospital Staff members.
“Hey wait, you can’t go in there!”
The woman’s words fell on deaf ears as Toph continued her search, eventually finding two young men who were being treated for burn wounds by a woman with her hair wrapped in a ponytail. With the Hospital staff trailing behind her, The Chief approached the three and folded her arms over her chest.
“I’m guessing you two had a bad night…”
The duo was visibly shaken by Toph’s arrival, but the Doctor only seemed annoyed. “Excuse me, what do you think you’re doing!? Can you give us a moment?”
“Nope.” Toph replied. “I need answers, and these two jokers are probably full of ‘em.”
“Can’t you see these two have 2nd-degree burns?” She asked.
“Nope.” Toph repeated.
Before the Doctor could go any further, one of her colleagues quickly rushed to her side, whispering in her ear the identity of the officer in front of her, and a bit of her legacy. Strangely enough though, the Doctor was left unimpressed. “So you’re the Toph Beifong. My apologies for the comment, but my question still stands. What are you doing?”
“These two runts know something about an attack last night.” Toph revealed. “I’m just here for standard questioning, Doctor…”
“Song.” The physician answered. “And can’t it wait until after I’ve finished?”
“Afraid not.” She answered bluntly, before turning her attention to the duo. “Now the Doctor tells me you’ve suffered some burns. Tangling with the Triple Threat Triad?”
“No, it wasn’t—!”
“Quiet!” The bearded one scalded. “We don’t know nothing, cop.”
“Sure you don’t.” Toph replied sarcastically. “Even so, you were spotted at the scene. So I still got the right to haul you in for further questioning. And who knows how long that can take…”
“You can’t arrest them in this condition!” Song argued.
Toph ignored the Doctor as she continued. “Plus we just took in a group of rowdy Firebenders. And you know how much of a riot our holding cells can be. Those burns can quickly turn 3rd-degree, and—!”
“Alright, we’ll talk!” The young man blurted out in a panic.
Toph smirked. “Good boy, now spill.”
“Look, we didn’t do anything!” He began. “It was this dame, alright? Came after us for no reason! Wearing makeup and some crazy getup. Tried fightin’ her off, but she was too quick.”
“And she got in some lucky shots.” The older man added. “We don’t even know how that poor guy got burned.”
“I tell ya, if we were near the river, she would’ve never touched us!”
Toph grew confused by that last statement. “Wait, near the river…you two are Waterbenders?”
The two men lowered their heads in shame, answering her question as Toph laughed. “Ha! Thanks guys, think I just caught a break in this case. Someone from the department should be over to help out soon. And if not…guess you’re up the creek.”
She chuckled at her own joke, making her leave as she could feel Song sneering at her. “Nice to see you’re as compassionate as they say.” She commented.
“Bedside manner’s your thing, Doc.” Toph replied. “I’m in the Ass-Kicking, Name-Taking department.”
The night sky in Republic City was a sight to behold, as the city lights and the starry sky did their part to illuminate everything, giving the city a warm sparkling glow. Zuko cared little about it however, as he sat next to the window in his Suite at the Four Elements. Diplomatic matters summoned him to the city, but with those matters complete, his mind was left undistracted…and drifted to thoughts of Mai.
The banging on the door snapped him from his thoughts as he rose from his chair and made his way over to answer it. Opening the door, he was shocked to see the Chief of Police standing here. “Toph?”
“Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes.” She replied, moving past him as she entered. Though her look and height had changed, her sense of humor remained the same.
“Yeah, it’s been years.” Zuko noted. “I take it this isn’t a visit just to catch up?”
“Why can’t it be?” Toph teased.
“Because I know you.”
Toph smirked. “You’re right. Got a case, you’re involved.”
Zuko grew confused. “How?”
“Murder.”
Zuko’s look changed from confused to annoyed. “You can’t honestly think I would—!”
“I don’t, so calm down.” Toph interrupted. “But two knuckleheads at the crime did identify someone familiar being involved.”
“Neither I or anyone representing the Fire Nation—!”
“Can you let me finish?” Toph said, losing her patience. “The suspect was wearing makeup, a ton of it! And she had the ability to use Chi Blocking.”
Zuko didn’t need to hear anymore as he knew who Toph was referring to. “…Ty Lee. Toph, I haven’t kept in contact with her since the Kyoshi Warriors protected me from those assassins…that was years ago.”
“Kinda figured that.” She replied. “But the suspects were deadest on her description. Look, I heard you were in town for some political signing and I’d just thought you’d like to know. I know you probably got some meeting—!”
“Actually, I don’t.” Zuko interrupted this time. “The treaty’s been signed, so I’m basically done here…but thanks.”
Toph showed genuine surprise on her face. “Really? All the business taken care of and you’re here alone? Would’ve thought you’d be plowing Mai and expanding the Royal Family.”
Zuko let out a long sigh as he sat down on the couch in his room, sinking his head into his hands. “Mai and I are separate right now.”
“Sad to hear.” Toph responded, showing little interest. “I gotta get going. I got patrols on the lookout, but I know a few places I can get some info and—!”
“I’m coming with you.”
The Chief paused as she was halfway out the door and turned back to the Fire Lord. “Say that again?”
“I said I’m coming with you.” Zuko repeated. “It looks like my business here isn’t done. If Ty Lee’s in any kind of trouble, I’m doing all I can to help. Besides, if a Fire Lord can’t help my friends, how could he ever help his people?”
Toph paused for a second, seemingly in deep thought over Zuko’s proposal. She then chuckled to herself, before growing a very wide grin which unnerved the Fire Nation Leader. “Why are you smiling, Toph?”
“Because it took 15 years, but it’s finally happened.” She answered. “Pack up Fire Lord, we’re going on a Life Changing Field Trip.”
It took a while for Zuko to understand what she meant, but it all came back to him as he remembered helping to train Aang. “I thought we already did that on the island…”
“I didn’t mean mine, Scarface…” She clarified. “…I meant yours.”
“…And then Sokka climbed in the Badgermole’s mouth looking for Momo.”Both Toph and Zuko laughed over The Earthbender’s story, remembering it fondly as they walked the Republic City streets. “That was truly a unique wedding.” Zuko noted.
“One of the best ones I’ve been to.” Toph replied. “Shame I don’t get to see Twinkle-toes and the Ice Princess that much, anymore.”
Zuko nodded in agreement as he also recalled something. “You know I never did get an invite to your wedding.”
“That’s because I never had one.” Toph answered bluntly.
“But Sokka told me you found someone…”
Toph was hesitant to answer, as she hated that the conversation turned personal, especially on her side. “You can say…Kanto and I are kind of like you and Mai.”
Zuko again nodded. “I think I understand…wanna talk about it?”
“I don’t remember you being so ready to listen when we were looking for Aang years back.” She pointed out.
“…Times change…” He responded honestly.
“You got that right.” She agreed, coming to a stop and putting her arm in front of the Fire Lord. “Hold it, we’re here.”
Zuko examined the building in front of them and the neighborhood they were in. Though Republic City was still being built and expanded upon, it was clear this area didn’t receive as much attention as the others. It was also clear that the criminal element took advantage of the blind eye shown to this area. But not everyone was oblivious to the goings on in this side of town.
“The Terra Triad.” Toph informed the Fire Lord. “A new gang that formed up a few months back. They ain’t done anything big enough to haul them in, but I’m betting they know about what went down last night.”
“Are you sure about that?” Zuko asked.
Toph shrugged. “Can’t hurt to ask.”
“And just exactly how are we supposed to get in?”
“Front door, genius.” Toph told him as they approached it. “I’m the World’s Best Earthbender and you’re the Fire Lord, it’s not like we can’t get in if we wanted to. Besides, if they fight back, then they know something.”
Zuko found himself unable to argue with that direct logic. “Kind of funny working without Aang.”
“Yeah, because his expertise with diplomacy & non-violence would really pay dividends here…” Toph sarcastically replied before slamming the side of her fist against the door repeatedly. “OPEN UP, RIGHT NOW!!!”
There was a commotion on the other side of the door, as several voices were overheard; a few of them in panic. A moment later, the door would swing open as a large, bald man appeared on the other side. “Whaddya want, Cop!?”
“What, I can’t drop by to say hi to my fellow citizens?” Toph replied.
“We didn’t do nuthin’!”
“Then you won’t mind me coming in.” She told him, barging inside fearlessly. Zuko followed behind her with his hood still on. He and the bald man exchanged glares, but the Fire Lord’s identity remained hidden. Toph led her friend down a long hallway, which at its end opened up into a spacious rundown restaurant. Paper lanterns hung low from the high ceiling, but not a single one was lit. Instead the room was illuminated by dim candles and the fists of a few select Firebenders. But the two didn’t need much light to see how many members of the Terra Triad had joined them.
“Stay here.” Toph informed the Fire Lord.
Zuko was concerned. “What? What about—?”
“Just trust me, and follow my actions.”
The Fire Lord was hesitant to do so, but he did comply with Toph’s wishes, remaining in the background as she walked forward and took a seat at the table in the middle of the room. A moment later, a representative of the Triad would emerge from the darkness, sitting down across the table from the Earthbender. “You Cops think you own the city now. You can go anywhere you want to, huh?”
Toph smirked as she recognized the voice. “Tong. Should’ve known you’d be the mouthpiece for your gang. It’s about the only thing you’re good at.”
Tong let out a mocking laugh as his response. “So tell me, what is the great and mighty Toph Bei Fong, Chief of the Metalbending Police doing…slumming in this neighborhood? You and your men got some ambush you’re planning?”
“Calm down, none of my officers are here.” Toph told him. “I just got a few questions.”
Several members of the Triad burst into laughter after hearing that. “So, the Chief wants to have a little chat? You know what, we’re all bored anyway so why not?”
Feeling confident, Toph kicked her feet up on the table as she crossed her arms and began. “Where were your playmates last night?”
“Out at a Pai Sho Tournament.” Tong promptly answered. “Who wants to know?”
“Someone who was murdered.” Toph informed them. “Burned to death, most likely by a Firebender. And I know out of all the scum gathered up in this city, you guys got the most Firebenders in your ranks.”
“Pure coincidence.” Tong replied, as several Firebenders showcased their ability by igniting their fists. “Don’t mean a thing though, since we had nuthin’ to do with it.”
“Sure you didn’t.” Toph said sarcastically. “My whole department knows you’re the Triad that operates in that part of Republic City. So I’m guessing that at least one of your crew saw what happened…and maybe even more.”
“You’re wasting your time.” Tong told her. “The Terra Triad doesn’t murder without reason. And we could care less about some painted up dame running around town.”
It was then that Toph knew she had him dead to rights. “I never said the suspect was a woman, Tong.”
Caught in his lie, the speaker for the Terra Triad began to panic, backing away from the table. “Doesn’t matter anyway, we’re twenty Benders strong here! And you ain’t got nuthin’ but some clown in a hood as backup!”
Toph’s smirk grew even wider upon hearing that. “I think you’re gonna regret saying that.”
And on cue, Zuko slowly walked forward, coming to a stop behind the Chief and igniting his fists, revealing his identity to the Triad. The Firebenders immediately snuffed their flames as their cautiously backed up. Fear ran down their spine as they trembled uncontrollable, instantly recognizing the man in front of them.
“Lord Zuko.”
They spoke in a hushed tone, and bowed down out of respect and mercy. An act Tong himself wasn’t happy with. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?”
“Showing common sense, if you ask me.” Toph answered for them.
“GET UP!” He demanded, pulling two of the Firebenders up from their kneeling positions. “I don’t care if it is the Fire Lord! I don’t care who that Bitch brings along with her! No way that she can beat us!”
As soon as those words left Tong’s mouth, Toph’s smile left her lips. “OK, I’m done talking.”
Raising her feet, she stomped them on the ground viciously, causing an earthquake which rattled the entire building and sent the entire Terra Triad stumbling to regain their balance. She then hopped into the air and stomped the ground again, creating two large pillars of Earth. She then punched them at the Triad, sending them scattering for cover and on the defensive. The Firebenders retaliated by unleashing several Fireballs, all of them intercepted by Zuko’s flaming roundhouse kick. He would follow up with another that propelled a stream of fire, knocking down several attackers.
The rest of the gang opted to force the offensive, charging the two Benders and forming a perimeter around them. Both Toph and Zuko took notice and put their backs against each other, ensuring no attack would surprise them. Even surrounded and outnumbered though, the two showed their fortitude and warrior spirit. They hurled Fireballs and chunks of Earth at their targets, dwindling the numbers down one by one. Tong remained on the sidelines, and though he was a nonbender, it didn’t stop him from providing his own form of encouragement.
“FIGHT HARDER, YOU IDIOTS!!!” He commanded. “THERE’S ONLY TWO OF ‘EM!!!”
But the two continued to even the odds, breaking the perimeter and pushing the enemy back. Two Firebenders broke free and pushed an assault on Toph though, sending her backwards. They then took to the air, generating a dual fire blast intended to incinerate her where she stood. Toph had little time to react as the attack was unleashed, and a fire that could light the night sky engulfed her. But as her two attackers landed and the flames were snuffed, all they saw was scorched ground in front of them.
“Did we get her?”
The two would get their answer as a hole opened up in front of them, and their chins met the brunt of Toph’s fists. They were propelled into the air, before hitting the ground in an unconscious state.
“What do you think, match stick?” She replied.
Zuko held his own as well, using a Fire Bomb to take down a group of chargers, thinning the ranks even further. Unfortunately a blast to his right shoulder staggered and took him by surprise, as one Firebender looked to capitalize on it.
“Fire Lord don’t look so tough now…” He said mockingly. “Gonna give you a scar to match your other eye.”
That pain however, matched with the Fire Lord’s anger, would serve to awaken a dragon. “My father gave me this scar…YOU THINK YOU CAN DO WORSE!?!?”
With that final word, The Fire Lord unleashed a massive Breath of Fire attack, engulfing his attacker and sending him flying backwards, crashing into a wooden pillar which knocked him out. It was an attack that also served as a catalyst, setting half of the room on fire. Tong noticed the flames spreading and decided to save his own skin. But a quick roundhouse from Zuko floored him, and a moment later, he would find his neck under the Fire Lord’s foot.
“Where’s Ty Lee!?” Zuko demanded. Tong couldn’t answer as fear ran rampant through his body. But that wasn’t good enough for the raging Firebender, who pressed down harder. “WHERE’S TY LEE!?!?”
“ZUKO!”
He felt a right hand gripping his arm; it was Toph’s. “Grab the scum and let’s bail! This place is coming down!”
That revelation was enough to snap Zuko from his rage. With regained focus, he grabbed Tong and the Firebender he attacked earlier and carried them over his should to the exit. Toph opted for a simpler approach, using her Earthbending to break a hole in the side of the building before moving the Earth underneath her unconscious foes to transport them to safety. It took all of her focus as she also had to create more pillars just to keep the burning rubble from crashing down around her. Her rescue a success, she beat a hasty retreat just as the roof collapsed in, barely making it out as Zuko met her at the entrance.
“And now I know how Katara’s roasts feel.” She said, quickly shedding her armor to cool herself. “Did everyone make it out?”
“Yeah.” Zuko replied, showing her bodies of the Triad members they rescued. “The ones still conscious made a break for it.”
“Figures.” Toph scoffed. “We better get outta here. Last thing I wanna do is explain another building collapse to the Extinguishers again.”
“Never thought I’d have to use this dump again.”
Toph uttered those words before kicking open the door to a fairly cramped Hotel room. She entered with Zuko right behind her, and tossed her upper body Metalbending equipment into a corner. Now wearing a tank top with, she stretched out her arms, enjoying the freedom that came from being out of her restrictive armor.
“This is where you live, now?” Zuko asked.
“Nope.” She answered. “Just a safe house I used for a case a couple months back. Have a seat…”
Zuko did, sitting down on the bed in the room. “We can lay low here, since my officers are probably surrounding my place looking for me.”
“I thought you’d want their help.”
“Not with this.” She told him. “I get enough flack for how I do things on the Force, I don’t need to drag down my men and women with me…even though they’re quick to jump in the line of fire.”
Zuko smiled. “Sounds like you got some good officers.”
“Yeah, yeah, just don’t tell them that. They might start wanting medals or something.”
The room grew quiet between them, as Zuko couldn’t help but reflect on his actions from just hours earlier. “Look Toph, I’m sorry. I just…lost it. I couldn’t control myself, and—!”
“You felt like burning the world?” Toph finished for him. Zuko nodded at her accuracy. “Considering your family, that’s understandable. And considering no one innocent got hurt, don’t sweat it.”
Zuko nodded in agreement. “So I guess we’re holed up here for the night.”
“Pretty much.” Toph answered.
“Funny thing is, after what we’ve been thought I don’t even feel tired.” He continued. “Guess I should find something to do…”
Toph nodded in agreement as the room grew silent for a moment, until she came up with an idea. “…wanna fuck?”
Understandably, the idea was jarring to the Fire Lord. “THAT’S your idea to pass the time?”
“You got a better one?” She asked.
“We’re friends, Toph. I don’t really want to ruin that—!”
“Calm down, Sparky Fists.” She interrupted. “I’m not saying let’s run off holding hands while we stare into each other’s eyes, or any of the junk Aang & Katara do. I just wanna get my rocks off.”
“I don’t even have an erection.”
“Can’t be that hard to get one with me.” She countered. “Look, you’re stressed, I’m stressed, all I’m suggested is we do something to get rid of that stress…that’s all.”
“I think I’ll pass.” Zuko replied. “Maybe we should just try to get some sleep.”
Toph simply shrugged and nodded, relenting to Zuko’s request as he crawled further onto the bed. It was small and narrow, barely able to fit two people onto it, but the Fire Lord decided to make the best of his sleeping accommodations. Considering he used to sleep in the dirt while helping Aang, this was considerably a step up. As he closed his eyes, he would be nearly jostled from the bed by Toph, who decided to jump in on her side.
“G’night, Fire Lord.” She said with a hint of sarcasm, closing her eyes as she placed her hands behind her head.
A quick glance from revealed that the Police Chief had almost completely disrobed, lying beside him topless, wearing only her panties. The glance also revealed that youngest member of Team Avatar had grown in more ways than one, and her armor did an excellent job of hiding a well-endowed bust. Zuko paid it no mind though, as he continued to lie on his back and closed his eyes to get some sleep. That position would only inconvenience him though, as he spent minute after minute in a restless state with his thoughts racing.
Several more minutes would pass before Zuko would become fed up. “She’s probably already out.” He thought to himself. “She’s always been the first to fall asleep…”
As the Fire Lord rolled over though, he would find that Toph switched positions as well. Facing away from him, Toph now had her firm backside pressed against Zuko’s crotch, as his hand inadvertently fell onto her breast. There was only so much a man could take…and Zuko had reached his limit.
“…and now I have an erection.”
Toph smiled, happy that her plan worked. “Would be a shame to let it go to waste…”
