The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship

Author's Note:
I have no idea what possessed me to come up with this, but it won't leave my head until and unless I write it down.. This one is going to go way off the rails from the TV series, but for the sake of placement follows immediately after the"Path of the Jedi".

Sabine Wren worked her way through the narrow aisles in Lothal's Capital City market. How dare they, she thought. I go through all that trouble to create my greatest masterpiece ever and all they can talk about is how 'dangerous' it was!
Even Ezra Bridger, who she privately considered her best friend, berated her. "It took you how long to do that? And in the middle of the repair bay? You could have been captured, or worse!"
"I knew what I was doing!" she had retorted, her anger twisting her normally-angelic tomboyish features into something decidedly demonic. "I'd been planning it for weeks!"
"You planned for weeks to spray-paint an Imperial Walker to look like an Endorian chicken? And Kanan says I have too much free time!"
And Hera and Kanan had been no better. "Sabine, you know better than this!" the Twi'lek woman had said. "Going out solo is dangerous enough, but this was entirely pointless!"
"We need to show the Empire that we're not afraid - that we're brave enough to stand up to them!"
"There's a difference between bravery and taking chances that shouldn't be taken, Sabine!" Kanan fired back. "What we do, we do for the people of Lothal! Not for vanity or pride or any other reason! I think it's high time you remembered that."
"I dunno," Zeb interjected. "I gotta admit the paintjob was an improvement. Always said those things looked like big wingless birds."
Hera sighed. "You're not helping, Zeb. Sabine, hand over your paint sprayers. You're going back to your quarters. We'll discuss this more tomorrow, after we've all had a chance to cool down."
She had stormed her way back to her quarters, but didn't stay there very long. As soon as everyone else was asleep, she slipped into a tight black long-sleeved shirt and matching leggings. She started to pull her boots on, but was afraid they would be too noisy against the deck plates. Ezra's a heavy sleeper and Zeb's snoring will keep him from hearing me, but I can't risk waking Kanan or Hera. Not to mention Chopper usually leaves his audio sensors on when he powers down for recharge. Oh well; the ground's soft enough. I should be fine until I get into town. Grabbing a small coin pouch and tying it around her waist, she donned a charcoal-gray overcloak and slipped out of her room. Her bare feet made no sound as she made her way down the corridors, the cold metal feeling oddly refreshing against her skin. As quietly as she could manage, she opened the hatch to the starboard docking ring, closed it behind her, climbed over the edge of the ring to hang on with her fingertips for a few seconds, then dropped to the grass below with a well-practiced tumble that left her without injury. Dusting off her clothes, she made her way towards the city.
Once inside, Sabine headed straight for the market. She wandered the stalls for a while, calming down from her rage. Well, as long as I'm out here, I might as well celebrate. But I need something more....colorful...
She eyed the wares of the various clothing vendors until something shiny caught her eye. It was primarily a garish neon purple, with various other shades of purple and pink running through the cloth and its metal trimmings. "How much?" She excitedly asked the bored-looking vendor while pointing at the outfit.
"That thing? Fifteen credits."
"Why so cheap?"
The vendor scoffed. "Because it's all the rage on Nal Hutta."
Sabine reached into a pocket of her cloak and slapped down a twenty-credit coin. "Sold. And you can keep the change."
Surprised, but not wanting to say anything to make her change her mind, the vendor took the outfit down and put it into a bag for her. "You need any shoes to go with it?"
The girl thought about it for a second, then said "That's alright - not gonna have 'em on long where I'm going anyway. Thanks!" and took off down the street, a giant grin on her face.
A few minutes later, Sabine was out of the market district and into one of the seedier parts of town - the type that most people avoided by day but flocked to at night when they thought they weren't being seen. Within a few moments she had spotted a likely candidate for her "celebration", ducked into a dead-end alleyway and hid herself in the shadows. If anyone back on the ship knew about this they'd really freak out..... she thought as she folded her cloak and put it on top of a nearby trash receptacle. Then she peeled off her shirt and leggings. She stood there a long moment, eyes closed, smiling as the cool air of the night washed over her naked flesh. The Mando girl had always had a bit of an exhibitionist fetish, but rarely got the chance to do something like this.
After she had enjoyed herself long enough, she reached into the shopping bag and put on her new outfit. It was about a size too small, which meant, in her eye, it fit perfectly. Stuffing her old clothes into the bag, pulled the cloak on and walked around the corner she had come from. Almost as an afterthought, she removed a cloth from one of her cloak's pockets and wiped the accumulated dirt off of her soles before walking up to the entrance.
A burly Echani male, his white hair cropped short, stood at the door to the dive bar whose flickering, half-burned-out sign advertised as the Drunken Gungan. For a reason Sabine couldn't figure out, the Gungan in question on the sign was dressed in the robes of a Senator. But she didn't have time to ponder over it before the bouncer stepped in front of her. "Aren't you a little young to be coming around here?" he asked.
"I get the feeling that never stopped anyone before," she replied, pulling a fifty-credit coin from her cloak and placing it in his palm. This night's getting expensive, she thought, but it'll be worth it. I'll just have a little less paint for a few weeks.
The bouncer stared at the coin for a few seconds, then pocketed it and stepped aside. "Enjoy your evening, ma'am."
"Oh, believe me...I will."
Once inside, Sabine removed her cloak and handed it, along with the bag, to the disinterested girl working the reception desk, which was little more than a cheap folding table covered with an equally-cheap tablecloth sitting in front of a row of tall lockers. The girl took a rubber stamp off of an inkpad, dialed a number onto it and stamped it on the back of Sabine's left hand. She then wrote the number down on a piece of paper, pinned it to Sabine's belongings and placed them in a locker. Unseen to the young girl, however, was the receptionist tapping a small button built into the floor with her foot. Once the Mando entered the bar proper, she at once felt both horridly underdressed and excited - almost as much as being in combat.
Her outfit, such as it was, was drawing the attention of several patrons. The top was akin to a metal-trimmed bathing suit top and the bottom piece was nothing more than a metal belt with two long, ovoid pieces of pink-and-purple shimmersilk trailing down the front and back, stopping just above her ankles. It was clear to everyone in the room that she was wearing absolutely nothing underneath the scant garment. The top was tight enough that her small-but-perky breasts were pushed up and squeezed together, making them appear larger and creating a modest amount of cleavage, and if she wasn't careful how she moved the belt would slide down and reveal a generous view of her backside. On her upper arms were sparkly purple coiled-metal bands with pink winding through them in a semi-chaotic manner. Her wrists and otherwise-bare ankles sported similar bands. Capping the whole thing off was a black leather collar with a ring attached for a leash.
Feeling the eyes of half the bar on her made her nipples go hard, which forced them to rub against the cold metal lining of her top and adding to her rush. She felt a tingle in her loins that she hadn't felt in far too long, and she knew that when she did eventually go back to the Ghost, she was going to be spending a lot of time in her quarters - just not for the reason Hera wanted her to. Ezra would have a heart attack if he saw me like this. Not that he ever will now - not after what he said.
Full of confidence, Sabine strode over to the bar and hopped up on a stool, crossing her ankles. "What'll ya have?" the extremely-busty barmaid asked of her, her eyes glancing briefly to the small, blinking red light under the counter and then over to the receptionist, who nodded briefly.
"Gimme a lomin ale," she replied, tossing a credcoin on the counter. Seconds later, a clear glass taller than her hand was wide was placed on the counter, filled nearly to the brim with a gold-colored liquid. The Mando girl smiled, then downed the entire glass in one shot, gasping a little as the above-room-temperature liquid burned her throat and then warmed her stomach.
She coughed once, then ordered another. The barmaid leaned over, her breasts nearly spilling from the off-the-shoulder halter top she wore and said "How about something a little more.....stimulating?"
Sabine grinned. "What did you have in mind, my dear?"
The barmaid reached into her cleavage and pulled out a small vial wrapped in black paper. "Straight from Kessel. First one's on the house."
Sabine picked up the vial and uncorked it, the spicy, pungent smell making her head spin. "Well, you only live once," she said, tipping the vial up and dumping the glitterstim onto her tongue. The popping, crackling sensation took her by surprise, but that was soon drowned out by the influx of thoughts and emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. It took her a few minutes to realize that they weren't her own.
The next few minutes were a blur, but Sabine eventually started to sort through the mental haze and find control of her mind and body again. Just as she was about to order another drink, the bar's band took the stage and began their own rendition of the Huttese song "Lapti Nek". As the bass kicked in, she found herself swaying to the music. Before too long, she had hopped down off the stool and began moving and grinding her lithe, nubile young body to the beat.
Eventually she hopped up on a table that was occupied by several men in the uniforms of Imperial troops - including one in a gray walker driver's coverall who looked like he'd spent a great deal of time stripping a great deal of paint off of something and had not yet cleaned his uniform. As the song hit full swing, she was barely conscious that she might be giving her impromptu audience more of a view than intended, but thanks to the effects of the glitterstim she both knew and didn't care. Let them look, she thought. It's not like they'll ever get to do more than that.
Before too long a crowd had gathered around her, passing her drinks and credcoins left and right. The walker driver was holding a white cloth to his nose to catch the blood that was gushing from it. The more inebriated she got the less she cared who saw her, and was seriously contemplating taking her top off.
At that moment, another cloaked figure entered the bar, this one accompanied by four heavily-muscled bodyguards dressed in black and sporting BlasTech DL-44 heavy blaster pistols. They stopped at the reception desk, where the girl said "The girl on the table," and went back to being bored out of her skull as they walked past her.
The person under the cloak watched Sabine for several long moments, while the guards seemed more interested in keeping any of the patrons away from their charge. Sabine's graceful, undulating movements had definitely captured their boss's attention, and the shimmersilk doing its own enticing dance though the dingy, smoke-filled air of the bar only added to Sabine's natural beauty.
As the song began to die down, the cloaked person raised a hand and pointed a finger at Sabine, whispering "Now" to the guards, who promptly pushed through the crowd and picked Sabine off the table, as well as the scattered credits she had received as "tips". One of them pushed a large-denomination credcoin to the barmaid, who nodded and pocketed the coin as if this were routine.
"WHOOO! Well, 'bye, everybody! Looksh like I gotta go! Shee ya later!" Sabine yelled to her new fans. "I'll be back ash shoon ash I can! WAHOO! She who controlsh the shpice, controlsh the univershe!" As they went by the reception desk, the girl checked Sabine's handstamp, then gave her cloak and bag to one of the other guards as they passed through the door and into the night. The last thing Sabine saw before falling unconscious was the Echani bouncer counting out a large number of credcoins.
***********************************************************************************
The next thing Sabine knew, she was in a large, comfortable bed in a dim, well-appointed room lit only by a half-dozen candles in metal holders strategically placed along the walls. One large window, covered by a heavy maroon curtain, sat opposite the double doors that were being closed by the cloaked figure. The girl let her head fall back to the soft satin pillow and closed her eyes, still in a spice- and liquor-induced euphoria.
"A young girl such as yourself really shouldn't even be in such a place," she heard a woman's voice say, "but some of you inevitably do, and always that one particular cantina. I don't see the draw of it, myself, but the employees are more than willing to turn a blind eye for a few credits, which serves my purposes." Sabine opened her eyes to see the cloak being removed, but she couldn't force herself to focus and everything remained blurry, even as the woman walked over to her and pulled one of Sabine's eyelids fully open, as if to examine her pupils. "Oh, dear...they gave you that awful glitterstim. I told them not to do that anymore; it makes things so much less enjoyable. But there's nothing to be done for it, I suppose." With that, the woman began to undress.
The effects of the spice had worn off, so Sabine was no longer receiving any thoughts or emotions from her unexpected companion. But the woman's intent was quite clear...and Sabine didn't care. A flick of a switch unseen to the Mando girl brought soft, barely-audible music to the room. "No reason I can't still 'set the mood', as they say. I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself regardless, but I prefer, if nothing else, the illusion of romance." The woman, now fully nude, leaned over Sabine and placed a light, gentle kiss on the girl's lips, then sighed. "So young....so soft.....it's no wonder I keep doing this."
The woman's hands caressed Sabine's flesh, trailing down to the hidden clasp on the front of the metal top and pulling it apart. Removing the garmant altogether, she could not stop herself from cupping and caressing the young girl's breasts, playing over the hard, pebbly nipples with her thumbs and watching her arch her back at the contact. "M-more..." she mumbled, still vaguely tasting alcohol on her own breath.
"As you wish, my sweet," the woman replied before leaning into take one nipple between her lips and suckle upon it. Sabine shrieked in pleasure, her whole body trembling. She clasped the woman's head to her chest, as if pleading with her not to stop. Eventually, the Mando girl calmed down and her new lover worked down her slender body, kissing and licking every inch of taut, young flesh until she reached the metal belt that held up the barely-existent skirt. Pulling it down and off of Sabine's legs gave the woman another surprise.
"My, my, my - that's a new one. Never knew a girl your age who'd started shaving already. Not that I mind, of course...." She pried the girl's legs apart and laid down on her stomach, eye-level with the moist, puffy mound. "And you got all excited dancing in that bar, didn't you? Naughty, naughty girl....." She blew a light breath of cold air across the flesh and watched as Sabine's back arched up off the bed, her fingers and toes curled so tightly they tugged on the bedsheets and her hips shook uncontrollably. "You're a sensitive one, too. I'm willing to bet you don't do this very often. Or much of anything...would explain the bar. You were acting out, weren't you? I did that more than once in my own youth. Probably explains why I do what I do now. Oh, but listen to me - I may as well be talking to myself. I'll just shut up and get right to it."
Tenderly, she used the fingers of one hand to pry Sabine's lips apart to reveal the soft, pink inner flesh, as well as something she wasn't expecting. "Well, well, well; you just keep surprising me. You really haven't done this before, have you? Well, far be it from me to take that from you. I'll just be gentle." She flicked her tongue out, lapping at the tiny hood that covered Sabine's most sensitive part before slipping inbetween the folds, tasting the girl's tangy juices. The half-conscious Mando locked her legs around the woman's head, making it difficult to breath.
Quite the strength on this one. Might want to be careful. Eventually, the older woman's skilled ministrations had Sabine squirming and writhing on the bed once more, then shrieking at the top of her lungs as wave after wave after wave of pleasure washed over her. As the girl calmed down and let her legs go limp, the woman crawled up the bed and planted another kiss, this one more passionate, on her lips. Sabine's mouth opened and their tongues mingled, letting the Mando taste herself not for the first time, though she never would have admitted it. "I'm glad you're having fun, dearie, but now...it's my turn." The next thing Sabine knew, her face was mashed inbetween two large, fleshy mounds. Her hands found their way to them as the clumsily licked, kissed, suckled and caressed every inch she could locate.
Her lover's sighs and moans encouraged her, all the while something in the back of her mind was repeatedly telling her to stop and get out of there and repeatedly being ignored by the portions overcome with the intoxicants she had previously imbibed. On her own initiative, Sabine pushed the woman back and dove between her legs, kissing and licking the tender flesh as had been done to her.
The woman was surprised but not at all displeased by Sabine's initiative. So many of her lovers simply let her do as she wished, and while that was still gratifying, often she craved more. She played with her own breasts as the inexperienced girl did her best to pleasure her - efforts which did not go wasted.
It took some time, but eventually the woman began to tremble as her orgasm approached. Sabine's nose bumped against her clitoris intermittently as she endeavored to lick as deeply as possible, and those chaotic, unpredictable surges of pleasure send the older woman over the edge. Her muscles tightened, her vision blurred and an ear-piercing scream emerged from her throat as sensations on levels she hadn't felt in a long, long time overcame her body.
It took several long moments for her to calm down. She lie next to Sabine, her eyes meeting the girl's. "Well...that was certainly fun. Wouldn't you agree?" Sabine could only nod in hazy agreement. "Well, then, let's not dawdle....we still have en entire night to fill...."
The woman climbed on top of the Mando girl and began making love to her anew.
The sounds emanating from their mistress' chambers had long become routine for the staff of the house, but even those who had been there the longest were taken aback by the volume, length and quantity of these particular noises. Wisely, they began sending communications out, canceling all appointments for the next day.
***********************************************************************************
Sabine woke up the next morning, her head pounding. Opening her eyes was a titanic effort, and when she did she instantly regretted it. The barest sliver of sunlight poured through the crack between the curtains. Ugh....why didn't I close those tighter? Then it dawned on her. Wait....I don't have curtains....or even a window......
She sat upright, her eyes scanning the room. Polished hardwood furniture, expensive marble flooring, soft, overstuffed cushions in all the chairs, silk and satin bed coverings....
Bed...coverings....wait....WHY AM I NAKED?????
Covering herself with the sheets, she started to get up and search for her clothes when she felt a bare, slender arm encircle her waist. "Mmm...don't be in such a hurry, love....I'm not going anywhere today."
Recognizing the voice, Sabine began to panic. Calm down, she told herself. It can't be. There's no way. You're just imagining things. Slowly turning around, Sabine found herself face-to-face with the blonde-haired form of Lothal's Minister Maketh Tua.
The resulting scream shattered a set of fluted drinking glasses in the kitchen downstairs.
Maketh's eyes fully opened as she took in Sabine's form...and then her face. "Wait a minute...I know you! You're that girl from the Academy!"
"Heh, heh, heh....oops?"
"Well, your skills in Aqualish notwithstanding, I can indeed confirm you do have a talented tongue. After last night....consider all forgiven about the mistranslation." Maketh sat up, letting her breasts bob in the air for a moment. "So, how are your Academy studies going?"
"Do we really have to talk about this naked?"
"Well, I suppose we could do other things while naked..." Maketh trailed off, a hint of lust in her eyes and voice.
Sabine put a hand to her forehead. "Just....just tell me what happened last night."
"Well, for some reason or another you decided to go on a late-night jaunt into a bar dressed like a Hutt's slave girl, where you proceeded to imbibe several alcoholic drinks and, unfortunately, a dose of glitterstim spice. When I arrived, you were dancing on a table and giving some very lucky troopers quite a show. I brought you back here, and we proceeded to make love all night long, until you passed out a couple of hours ago." Then she added, "If I had recognized your face sooner I'm not sure if I could have gone through with it, but it was dark, the lighting in that bar is simply abysmal and by the time I got you back here, well, I already had the lights turned down and the candles lit. I was also excited; you're the first lover I've had in months, and certainly among the best."
"....I will never, ever do this again...."
"I don't doubt it; the hangover you must have is probably enough of a deterrent."
Sabine slid out of the bed. "I...I have to go. My friends are probably worried about me....I wasn't supposed to go anywhere last night..."
"I suspected as much. Your things are being washed...but I would like to send you home with something a little nicer, if you'll let me."
Sabine sighed. "Alright."
"Let's see what we have in the old wardrobe.....oh, by the way....who is 'Ezra'?"
Sabine's entire body went rigid. "H-how do you know that name....?"
"Well, last night you had me fetch an ink-brush and then told me to write the name on you. And you specified that I was to put tiny little hearts all around it, too."
"Wh-where???" Sabine asked, turning her head this way and that to try spot it.
Maketh smirked, then reached out and smacked Sabine's right butt cheek, eliciting another scream from the girl.
Down in the kitchen, one of the servants sighed and reached for a vacuum cleaning unit. "Gonna need more dishes at this rate...." she mumbled.
As if it was the most normal thing in the world, Maketh rose from her bed and began searching through her clothes while still in her birthday suit. Begrudgingly, Sabine did acknowledge that the woman was extremely easy on the eyes, and part of her wished she had been sober the previous night. "That Ezra, whoever he is, must be special to you. I suspect he would be worried if you didn't turn up. Ah, here we go!" The blonde woman returned from her closet with a light-pink long-sleeved blouse made of a thick, squishy material and a black knee-length skirt. "Here you are, my dear. Try these on. I wore these when I was at the Academy, and I was just about your size. It seems to me both times I've seen you you've worn a fair bit of pink, and I must say it looks good on you."
"Th-thank you, Minister."
"Oh, don't be so formal! Call me Maketh!" She went back to the closet and pulled out a set of street clothes and a small shoebox. "Oh, and take these. Can't have you going home barefoot, now can we?"
Sabine opened the box while Maketh put on the Imperial-gray tunic and slacks. Inside were a pair of black leather sandals, seemingly brand-new even though the box was old. There was little that was remarkable about them; just a strap going across behind where the toes would be positioned and another coming up to form a buckle around the ankle. "I bought those my first year at the Academy, thinking I would study by day and party by night, as all of my older friends and relatives said. But I soon found that I was never invited to any of the parties, and so immersed myself in my studies. It paid off, seeing as how I now have all of this," she waved her hand to indicate her room and presumably the entire house, "but it was dreadfully lonely. Even now I get lonely....I suppose that's why I do this..."
Sabine donned the top and skirt as Maketh sat down next to her. "I know it's wrong, little one, but I'm only human." For the first time, the Mando girl saw a hint of humanity in the woman as the tears began to flow. "I've never really thought about it this much before....I suppose with it being you and bringing back memories of the Academy......oh, my dear...can you forgive me?"
Sabine didn't know what to say. Here was this woman, this Imperial, who should be her sworn enemy in every possible way, who essentially abducted and raped her...now crying in remorse and asking for forgiveness. After a long silence, she finally answered, "I'm not sure I should. Given what happened, and what you did, I really shouldn't. I should be furious. I should be calling for the police, or better yet the Stormtroopers to come and arrest you for what you did. But...Sometimes, we do things we shouldn't. Things we know are wrong, things others tell us not to do, and yeah, it feels great at the time....but when you realize how badly you've hurt those close to you, you realize that they were just trying to save you - even if it was from yourself." Taking a deep breath, she then said, "So, yes....just this once....I forgive you, Maketh." Her eyes went wide as Maketh gripped her in a tight embrace, nearly knocking the wind out of her.
"Oh, thank you! Thank you!" The Minister released her young lover after a few seconds and said, "But I'm afraid I'm not done. I have but one other request."
"What's that?" Sabine asked, nervously.
"Take something with you." Maketh stood up, padded over to a small computer terminal and pulled something silver from a drawer. "This....this is a direct line to my personal comlink. It's two-way, so I can call you and you can call me. I...I'd really like to see you again...if you'd let me."
Sabine was shocked, to say the least. "But...but why? I'm sure you have tons of girls on-call by now..."
"No, I don't. Usually I have them out of here and back on the streets before morning. What possessed me to let you stay so long I don't know. It just felt....right. You don't have to answer, not right away. Just take the comlink and think it over. I won't call you, I promise - you call me when you decide, whatever that decision may be. Alright?" Sabine nodded. "Oh, dear - I completely forgot....I didn't even ask your name."
The Mando girl took a while to answer her. "Sabine. My name's Sabine."
"Well, Sabine, at the risk of being presumptuous, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." She stood up and retrieved a pair of shoes from under the bed. "Well, let's get you home. Oh, before you say anything, I know - I can't be seen taking you right to where you live. My speeder will take you as far as you deem necessary, then we'll let you off."
The walk to the speeder was quiet and uneventful. Sabine's clothing from the night before was in the shopping bag but, as promised, it had all been professionally cleaned and dried. Making sure none of the staff was watching, she buried the comlink at the bottom of the bag, earning a stealthy smile from Maketh. They climbed inside the speeder, which had a full roof and tinted windows that, thankfully, prevented anyone from seeing who was in it.
"Drop me off a few blocks from the bar - in the market district. My home's not too far from there." It was a lie, sure, but she couldn't very well have them drop her off at the city gates.
A short time later, the speeder stopped, Maketh leaned over and said, "Please...think about what I asked. I....I really want to get to know you better, Sabine. And I want you to know....one way or another...you'll be the last."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that I've decided to stop these little trysts of mine; aside from the fact that no-one could compare to you, little one, I cannot help but think of all the potential harm I've caused. These people are supposed to be under my protection, as an emissary of the Empire. They put their trust in me and I thank them by abusing my power and preying on their daughters. This is exactly the sort of corruption that caused the Republic to wither and die and I refuse to continue."
Sabine was more shocked than when she woke up in the Minister's bed. "You...you really man that?"
"I do."
"Then I want you to know...I mean this." She grabbed Maketh's head and pulled her in for a deep, passionate, tongue-filled kiss. When they pulled apart, Sabine was blushing and Maketh was smiling. "The comlink....I'll think about it. I can't promise anything, but....I will think about it." With that, she climbed out of the speeder and took off down the market.
"My, oh my, but that girl is full of surprises..." Maketh remarked as she instructed her driver to head home.
***********************************************************************************
Back at the Ghost, the crew was furious. Kanan, Zeb and Hera wanted to know where she'd been, and where she'd gotten the clothes. Ezra was furious - apparently the boy had spent most of the night and the entire morning sitting outside her quarters, wanting to speak to her.
"I just went out for a little while, okay? I did some shopping, blew off some steam, did some thinking. You guys were right - painting that walker up like I did was a stupid risk and I won't do anything like that again."
"Oh, but apparently you're just fine with sneaking off in the middle of the night and leaving us all worried sick, aren't you?" Kanan asked angrily.
"Alright; I shouldn't have done that, either. But while I was out, I realized that you guys were only mad at me because you were concerned for my safety. And not just because I'm a good shot or handy with explosives. You genuinely care about me." She paused. "You put your trust in me, and I betrayed that trust. Twice. And for that...I am sorry."
Kanan's face softened. "I...I wasn't expecting that..."
"I suppose," Hera said, "as long as no harm was done and you didn't compromise us...we can let this one slide. Just....just be careful in the future, okay, Sabine?"
"Okay." the girl nodded, which got her a big, hairy hug from Zeb.
"Well, I suppose we all need to learn our lessons from time to time. Just bring me back a souvenir next time, okay?"
Sabine blushed. "Well...I dunno if I can....."
Ezra, notably, remained silent through all of this. He just watched Sabine, as if he was studying her. Then his face got hard, as if he was angry, and stormed out of the room.
"I think you need to talk to him, Sabine." Kanan said. "I don't know what's going on in his head, exactly, but he's definitely angry."
"Alright; I will." The Mando made her way down the corridor until she caught up with Ezra outside the quarters he shared with Zeb. "Ezra, wait.."
"Save it, Sabine!" He didn't even turn to look at her as he spoke. "It's not just about you sneaking off - I can forgive that. But you're hiding something. I don't think Kanan can sense it, but I can. I'm not going to say anything about it to the others; that's your responsibility. But until you can trust us - trust me - enough to tell the truth...then....then just don't talk to me!" He stepped inside his room and slammed the door shut.
Sabine stood there for a long time, unsure of what to do. Eventually, she heard the others coming down the hall and decided it was best if she wasn't seen standing there. She quietly slipped inside her own quarters and locked the door. She kicked her sandals off and lay down on the bed, her memories of Maketh flooding back. Why am I even thinking about this? she asked herself. Ezra knows I'm not telling the truth; whether it's his intuition or the Force I don't know, but things will never be the same between us unless I tell him. And then he'll tell Kanan and Hera and that will guarantee I'll never see Maketh again. And why am I so obsessed with seeing her? Why did I kiss her like that? I should be trying to distance myself from her as much as possible. I just....I don't know..... She curled up on her side, hugging her knees to her chest. She imagined she could smell Maketh's perfume on the clothes. That comforted her until she fell asleep.
The next three days on board the Ghost were tense. Everyone tried to act normal, except for the notable fact that Ezra did not speak to Sabine at all. In fact, he seemed to go out of his way to avoid even being around her. Kanan tried more than once to warn him about harboring resentment, but Ezra just brushed him off. On the dawn of the fourth day, Sabine decided she needed someone to talk to. Quietly, she pulled out the silver comlink and keyed the switch. "Maketh....." she whispered, "it's Sabine. Meet me in the plaza square at the center of the market. We....we need to talk."

And thus ends this first chapter. It's strange going back to writing again....I just haven't felt inspired for the past few, well, years. But I don't think I can argue with the results; this is one of my more favorite pieces I've ever written and I hope you have all enjoyed it, as well.
