Go For Broke
“Oh, my aching head...”It felt like a Golem was trying to pound its way out of Rainbow Dash’s head, as the searing heat jostled her from her impromptu slumber. Slowly sitting up, she placed her hands down on the ground and felt it give and sift beneath her palms; she knew the feeling. “Sand...I can feel it on my fingers. I must’ve ended up in the Desert or something, but—I HAVE FINGERS!?!?”
The revelation finally hit her as she placed her former hooves up to her face, and wiggled her fingers. Her interest in this development would end suddenly though, as she heard a familiar groan. “Ohhhh...”
“Rarity?”
Immediately she jumped to her feet, albeit rising several feet off the ground before her feet actually touched sand. Once they did though, she rushed over to the sound of the voice, and after a few moments, discovered her best friend lying in the sand, changed in just the way she was. She still had her trademark long violet hair, but was now adorned in a glamorous sheer white designer dress with purple high heels. As Dash’s shadow blocked the desert sun, Rarity finally came into consciousness.
“Uhhn...why does it feel like I’ve been lying on sand for hours?”
“You’re asking me!?” Dash responded as Rarity slowly rose to her feet.
“Well, this must be another fine mess you’ve gotten us into.”
“ME!?!?” Dash shouted in shock. “What’d I do!?”
“Well obviously you’ve must’ve done something to result in us being stranded here in the desert and forced to walk back to civilization using...our...hooves?” It was at that moment that Rarity came to the same realization Rainbow Dash had earlier. “WHY DO I HAVE FINGERS!?!?” She gasped.
“Because we’re human.” Dash surmised. “I remember Twilight telling me about it after she got her crown back. Somehow we must’ve went through that magic mirror.”
“Well, obviously it must’ve had some effect on your wardrobe.” Rarity noted. “I mean a hoodie with a sports bra, a mini-skirt & sneakers? I know you’re the active type but that is just ridiculous.”
“As if what you’re wearing is so wonderful.”
“My dear, my wardrobe is always wonderful. I can—AHHH!!!” Glancing down, she noticed the dress and shoes she had on. “I can’t wear this! It’s a winter ensemble, and we’re in the desert!”
Rainbow Dash responded with a smirk. “You know, it’s almost worth all of this just to see that freak-out.”
Hearing that, Rarity composed herself from panic, and turned to rage. “Thank you Rainbow Dash, this is Dodge Junction all over again!”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, don’t tell me you’re still peeved about all that!” Dash said.
“Of course I am still ‘peeved!’” Rarity replied. “I had to share a Pump Trolley with Pinkie Pie all the way back to town! Do you know how many foods can be associated with cherries?” Rainbow Dash took a moment, before shaking her head ‘no.’ “4,238. And that is not knowledge I am supposed to know about!”
“Ugh, are you gonna be like this the whole time?” Dash complained. “Or can you let me find us a way to get out of here?”
To that proposal, Rarity laughed almost mockingly. “Oh really, and just what is your plan to get us out of here? Create multi-colored explosions to signal for help?”
“Hey! Could you keep it down?”
The sound of another familiar voice snapped them from their conflict as both turned their attention to behind Rarity, where they noticed Spike slowly walking up to them. He, too, was changed much like the others, wearing a purple zipper hoodie with matching pants & sneakers, along with green hair in a spiky formation.
“SPIKE!!!” Rarity quickly rushed over to hug her dear friend, and the sensation of her heaving bosom against his chest instantly put a smile on his face.
“Now this is a welcome...” He said happily. “...but how did we get here? Last thing I remember was visiting your shop for the gems you found.”
“Indeed.” Rarity agreed. “I had just finished work on a new ensemble when you knocked at the door, and the rest is just blank. Rainbow Dash?”
“I just remember clearing the skies that day.” She replied. “And this one cloud...which strangely tasted like cotton candy?”
Rarity was perplexed over that revelation, but then recalled having a similar one of her own. “Yes, in fact, I do remember running into a piece of fabric that...well, honestly, turned invisible in my very hand.”
“OK, this is starting to sound like chaos going wild in Ponyville.” Spike surmised.
“My ears are ringing...”
Suddenly, in a mini-whirlwind of sand rose a strange yet eerily familiar figure; a rather older gentlemen with white hair sporting a goatee and wearing a turtleneck sweater. The grin on his face was crooked and devious, and the look in his eye even more so. Yet the three couldn’t shake the feeling that they knew this man. “Rarity, Rainbow Dash, so good to see you two again.”
“I beg your pardon but, do we know you?” Rarity asked.
The mysterious man chuckled. “Oh, I may have changed our appearances ‘slightly’, but you should know in your hearts who I am...I mean, who else could have Rarity dragging around huge boulders and fighting her friends for the honor of it.”
And right then it was revealed, the identity of the man who stood before them. “DISCORD!!!”
“And they win the Booby Prize!” He replied bombastically. “Although I believe Rarity already has a foothold in that department.”
The violet-haired seamstress was confused for a moment, before realizing he was referring to her own ample bosom. Folding her arms over her chest, she turned away in a huff as Rainbow Dash stared him down. “I should’ve KNOWN you were behind this! All that talk about you reforming and being Fluttershy’s friend, ALL A CROCK! So what’s your scheme this time!?”
Discord responded with a gasp and placing his hand on his chest in shock. “Why, my dear Rainbow Dash! Such accusations, and without merit, too! But, have you ever stopped to think that maybe this is supposed to happen?”
“Really? Like Princess Celestia would let you—!”
“Warp reality to this extent by using the mirror?” Discord finished for her. “Why, that’s exactly what she let me do.”
“Lies!” Rarity said, turning back around. “Lies and slander! Our princess would NEVER allow someone like you this much power!”
“Have you ever thought that there would be a reason all of this is happening?” Discord argued. “A reason why you have been brought here, a method to my madness, if you will?”
“No, we think there’s just madness.” Spike chimed in.
“Ah, the New Princess’ assistant.” Discord commented. “COUGH up any interesting news lately?”
“Alright, that’s enough!” Dash interrupted. “No more games, no more riddles! Just tell us what the hell is going on!”
“Well to be quite frank, what’s going on is a game.” Discord answered. “And to start off, you must reach your destination.” The desert figure stepped aside and motioned his hand to the distance, where a city lied off in the distance.
“You want US to go THERE…” Rarity asked. “…In THIS ensemble!?”
“Yeah, right!” Dash responded. “Walk all the way there, realize it’s a trap, and then probably get turned into Cupcakes or something!”
“Why Dash, I’m wounded.” Discord replied, feigning hurt. “But it really is your choice. Go there, keep the game going and get out of her quicker, or stay here and play ‘Count the seconds the desert sun roasts your skin.’ Toodles!”
“I got a better game!” Dash said, darting forward for a haymaker punch. She found herself swinging at air & sand however, as the image of Discord faded into the dunes and the wind, leaving the three back by themselves.
“So what do we do?” Spike asked.
“It’s obvious we have to go to that city.” Rarity suggested. “I’d even settle for a 3-star Hotel as long as it gets us out this dreadful heat.”
“Are you kidding!?” Dash argued. “He’s obviously setting up a trap!”
“Well do YOU have any better ideas!?”
Unfortunately, Dash didn’t. And looking up at the sky didn’t reveal one cloud that could shield them from the unforgiving heat. “Alright…let’s get this over with…”
“Water…water…”
The journey felt like it had endured for days, and the sun felt as if it remained motionless in the sky, unmoving, unrelenting…
“Gems…Gems…”
…yes Rainbow Dash, Rarity & Spike still trudged on, determined to reach their destination in spite of Discord and the ruthless desert.
“Room service…room service…”
It was an arduous journey, though. Dash had already stripped down to her sports bra, carrying her hoodie over her shoulder. Rarity was for to carry her heels due to the agony on her feet…and Spike was forced to carry Rarity. It wasn’t a thankless job though, as there were two benefits. Rarity’s body shielding him from the sun’s rays, and having her massive bosom rest on his head. Still, the three were about to collapse from dehydration, when fate would show them what they needed.
“THERE IT IS!!!”
The Town’s Entrance, standing right in front of them; they had made it. With their last bit of energy they made a sprint through the giant archway to enter the village. And as they passed through, they were greeted with an even grander sight…water. A well to be exact, as all three rushed over to it. Dash reached it first, and noticed that the bucket didn’t even need to be lowered, as it was filled to the brim. Grabbing the ladle inside, she took a huge scoop and poured it into her mouth, not caring that some of it spilled down her front, making her sports bra significantly more see-through.
Rarity was next, as she took a scoop of water, but was more ladylike in her consumption of it; taking significant but moderate sips and being sure not to waste a drop. After she was done, she turned to her small friend. “Alright Spike, you can—!”
She was surprised to see that the bucket they used had already been taken by the young man, as he gulped down every last drop of water that passed his lips. It was then that Rarity giggled to herself, remember that even in this form, he was still a dragon.
“Hey guys, over here!”
The two looked over a ways to Rainbow Dash, who stood next to a booth stocked with clothing on their shelves. “Looks like this place is vacant, but they had a marketplace recently. Looks like they were selling some—!”
“CASHMERE!!!”
Like a rocket Rarity sprinted over to the booth, knocking over Dash as she came to a stop and caressed a scarf from the bin in front of her. “Oh my…so soft to the touch…”
“Yeah, you’re welcome.” Dash replied, brushing the sand from her as she stood up.
“But why would this town be vacant?” Spike asked as he walked over. “It doesn’t look like anything was destroyed, so there wasn’t a battle.”
“Yeah, and I didn’t notice—what was that!?”
A shadow; it appeared in the corner of Dash’s eye, but was just visible enough for her to notice. “What was what?” Spike responded.
“I…just saw something.” She told him. “At least I thought I did.”
“I think you’ve been in the sun too long.” Spike surmised. “You can get yourself some more water and—WHOA!!!”
And in the blink of an eye, the same shadowy image appeared and disappeared for Spike as well. “You saw it too, didn’t you!?” Dash inquired.
“Yeah…I don’t know what’s going on here, but I think we should find something to help us and…Dash? Dash!? There’s someone right behind me, isn’t there?”
Not just someone, though. As Rainbow Dash nodded her head, she gazed at over 2 mysterious black-clad warriors wielding swords. “Uh, please tell me I’m not looking at a group of ninjas ready to slice & dice us?”
“Wish I could tell you that, kid…” Dash answered. “Uh, Rare…”
“…and you will look just so adorable on me during the Winter Wrap-Up.” Rarity said, still caressing the scarf. “Oh, yes you will! Yes you will!”
“RARITY!!!”
“What is it, Rainbow Dash?” She asked, before noticing their aggressors looming towards them. “Oh…that. Well, rather fine job you’ve done of getting us in more trouble.”
“AGAIN!?” Dash responded. “I’m beginning to think you’d blame me for bad weather if you could!”
“Uh, girls?”
“Well, considering you control the clouds in Ponyville, that’s a given.”
“Girls!”
“How about you find a way of controlling your mouth, before I—!”
“GIRLS!!!”
They both turn to Spike. “WHAT!?”
“DUCK!!!”
Before they could ask why, they spotted several of the ninja flying at them with murderous intent, and hit the deck, sending them flying overhead and crashing into another clothing stand. “Alright, who wants to get bashed by Dash!?”
The rainbow-hair colored tomboy stepped up first, exhibiting an impressive knowledge of close quarter combat. Her time at the Wonderbolts Academy did not go to waste as she easily dispatched with her first three attackers. A fourth one rushed her, and she caught his arm; twisting it behind his back before pushing him into the fifth attacker, taking them both out. The sixth followed up, and was quickly dropped by a leg sweep. Feeling in the zone, she didn’t bother to wait for the seventh, rushing him and kneeing him in the gut, before jumping into the air, spinning around and tossing him into a group of several other ninja. She then brushed her hands, happy with her work.
“Who’s next to step up?” She challenged.
Rarity looked on in astonishment. “Um, Rainbow Dash?”
“Yeah, I know, I wrecked ‘em!” She said. “The key is keeping your feet planted when—!”
“That’s just it, Dash!” Spike interrupted. “They’re NOT planted!”
Looking down, she noticed that both of her friends were now several feet below her, and she was hanging in midair. “I can fly again? YEAH!!!” She celebrated by soaring around as if she had her sky blue wings, before taking the fight back to their opponents.
“Well, this will certainly make things easier—!”
“HEY, YOU!!!”
Rarity turned only to have her arm grabbed by one of the larger ninja, who narrowed his eyes at her. Before he could take any action, though…
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF HER!!!”
The heroic fire-breather took some of his own, leaping off a bin, into the air, and onto the shoulders of Rarity’s captor. He then unleashed a flurry of punches and spat fireballs as the large ninja ran around wildly for his life. “OH GOD, GET HIM OFF! GET HIM OFF! IT HURTS!!!”
Rarity rubbed her wrist before cheering on her secret admirer. “Get him, Spike! Show that ruffian what for!”
Her cheers would be short-lived however, as three other attackers began to swarm her. She expertly evaded their attacks, but was continually backed up until she reached the very booth where she admired her scarf. Her attackers unleashed several throwing stars which sent her ducking for cover and the booth into shreds. As she was in the air, she noticed that the scarf she longed for was in danger, and acted quickly.
“NO, MY SCARF!!!”
And as if the world moved in slow motion, she reached out her hand and grabbed hold of the cashmere cloth, right before landing in a patch of sand that didn’t have debris. “You BARBARIANS!” She growled. “How DARE you treat such luxurious fashion like this!?”
The anger in her eyes was evident, but what was not was the scarf she held…which began to glow a bright light blue. Instinctively, she wielded the scarf as a whip, taking out the hostile warriors on the left and right. The middle combatant she dispensed in a special fashion, whipping the scarf to wrap around his neck, pulling him in close, and landing a brutal elbow to his gut before using the scarf to toss him in the distance. This action didn’t go unnoticed by her friends, either.
“Whoa, you can use your magic?” Dash inquired.
Rarity gazed at the glowing scarf before answering. “I…I suppose I can.”
“You were majestic with it, Rarity.” Spike swooned, his opponent now unconscious with a smoking head in the sand.
“Not now, Spike dear. I have to teach these ruffians a lesson in etiquette.”
“Oh, right!” Spike agreed, before spotting another hapless attacker, who immediately rethought his decision.
“Wait, no.” It was too late however, as Spike had already launched himself onto his shoulders, repeating the tactics that took down his first prey. “AAHHH, OH GOD! IT BURNS!!!”
With their abilities returned and ready for full usage, the three found themselves not only holding off their attackers, but defeating them soundly. It wasn’t long before the deadly group was converted into a pile of unconscious bodies, with Rainbow Dash floating above them in victory.
“Piece of Cake.” She boasted.
“It was most certainly not.” Rarity argued. “Regardless, at least we dispensed with the threat.”
“Of course we did!” Dash told her. “I mean, if this is the best Discord can come up with, he is totally off his game.”
Suddenly, a deafening and ground-trembling roar filled the desert air, and was followed by a gigantic looming shadow which covered the immediate area. Looking up, the three discovered that the shadow belonged to one of the worst dangers man or pony could ever face…a Dragon.
“Or…maybe he was just saving the best for last.”
Acting quickly, Rarity used her scary to grab hold of Dash’s wrist, pulling her to safety as the dragon unleashed its fiery breath. The three ran for cover, hiding behind a nearby building as the fire engulfed the bodies of the defeated warriors in flames.
“The ninjas!” Dash remembered. “Did that dragon just—!”
“No!” Spike abruptly answered, peering out from cover. “Their bodies, they’re turning into wisps of sparkly smoke…”
“Discord strikes again…” Dash noted.
“Yes, well that’s all well & good but WHAT ABOUT THE DRAGON!?” Rarity reminded them. “Spike, can’t you reason with it?”
“I can barely talk sense into the dragons on Equestria!” Spike replied. “This one looks like he’s put nuts!”
At that moment, their cover was snatched from them, literally, by the dragon’s claws as it tore the building from its foundation, revealing their position. “Uh, you don’t think it heard me, do you?”
No answer needed to be given to Spike, as the dragon reared his head back, took a deep breath, and let loose scorching flames covered the entire area.
