Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
He was watching her again. He knew he shouldn’t since she was a coworker, but the sight of her skirt sliding up her legs as she climbed the ladder caused all trains of thought to derail.
“Owen?” David Xanatos leans back in his chair, watching his best friend quickly look away and slightly blush. “Is there a problem? We can go over these figures another time.” He tears his gaze away from her and stares at the piles of paper on the table between them. “No. I just have this odd feeling every time she climbs to the top shelf in those heels that she’s going to fall is all.” “I see.” David smiles knowingly. “Eve is a very lovely and capable young woman. I’m sure she can handle a ladder all on her own. Your inner cave elf is showing.” His eyes narrow as he shoves the papers to one side. “I’m not sure you do. Miss Anderson is a coworker and human to boot. Any entanglements you are hinting at would be impossible.” “Impossible?” His smile turns sad. “Owen, you underestimate her. She took her assignment with the gargoyles with grace and handles all aspects of magic very well for a ‘human’. Perhaps you need to quit isolating yourself and let her have the chance to get to know the real you. You are stuck here until your sister decides she forgives you anyway. Might as well enjoy it.” A loud crack fills the air and a growled “Shit!” causes them to turn towards the shelves of books again. Eve, arms locked around the ladder rungs, dangles in the air as pieces of wood fall to the floor. Owen lunges from his chair, knocking it over in his haste to get to her. He quickly slides another ladder to hers and ascends to her level. “Grab onto me.” He reaches out for her, wrapping one arm around her waist. “Thanks.” She nervously reaches out and grasps him as he pulls her onto his ladder. He slowly descends, keeping her close til they reach the floor. As her feet touch, one heel breaks off and sends her crashing to the floor. “Fuck! This is not my day!” She slaps the floor in frustration. Suddenly she realizes who’s standing near her as Owen gives her a hand up and she smiles sheepishly. “Forgive my foul language, Mr. Xanatos. I don’t usually use words like that at work.” “We all have had those kinds of days, Miss Anderson.” He winks at her with a winning smile. “All is forgiven so long as you are unharmed.” She grins back. “I am since Owen was there to catch me.” She pretends to swoon, hand on heart as she mutters in a nasally voice. “He’s my hero!” Owen groans, rolling his eyes as he walks back to the table. “Perhaps next time I will let you fall.” “But who will be my knight in shining armor then?” She laughs, kicking off both shoes and tossing them in a nearby trash cans. “Another $100 shoes down the drain.” “I’ll call Fox and let her know you will be late to Alexander’s lesson.” David pulls the papers across the table, gathering them into his arms. “Owen can take you to see Mr. Founts for a new pair of shoes.” “Isn’t he Fox’s personal shopper? I can’t afford his prices, Mr. Xanatos, even at my salary.” She bites her lip. “No offense, sir.” He waves away her objection and stows the papers in his briefcase. “None taken. The shoes are on me. Much cheaper than a hospital bill, I can assure you.” He winks at her. “Just promise me you won’t buy Louie Batones.” She offers Owen a weak smile. “My knight here will keep me from going too crazy.” His lifts one eyebrow at her. “Perhaps we should get your shoes so you will not be too late?” Her smile falls. “Yes. Perhaps we should.” She follows him quietly as they leave the library and head for the main floor. Only once does he speak to her on the way, asking for her shoe size, before lifting his cellphone to call Mr. Founts. Knowing this is the longest they have been alone together in the year since she started working as Fox’s personal assistant, she finds herself at a loss for how to break the since. She follows him to his personal car, noting how small and in descript it is as she slides into the passenger seat. Her gaze is pulled out the window, a sigh of frustration escaping her lips. “I am really glad you were there today. Thank you.” “I’m glad to be of service.” his eyes never leave the road as they swing out into the midday traffic of New York. Her lips curve up. “I know I’m a bit sarcastic most days and probably grate on your nerves enough that you don’t want to be around me but when you say things like that I can’t help it. You say that like you are some prize stallion waiting to be pulled from your stall every day to do a chore.” A faint smile quickly passes before he glances stoically at her. “I did not say such a thing nor did I think it of you, Miss Anderson.” “Eve.” She sighs again, missing the faint smile return. “My name is Eve. We’ve been colleges for a year. I won’t bite much if you call me by my first name every now and again.” He pulls into the parking at Saks. “I will take that into consideration, Miss Anderson. Now as for your selections..” She laughs softly as she slips out of the seat. “Don’t worry. I’ll get something sturdy and inexpensive so I won’t be any more klutzy than usual.” He shakes his head, following her as she goes inside to meet Mr. Founts for the first time. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
