Wrote this one a few years back and finally got around to typing it up. There's really only hints of ZukoxAang in here since this was my first time writing the two of them. I think I did a good job, but be sure to let me know. :)
-- She tended to the garden with gentle hands and after a moment, gazed up at the sky. The skies were clear and blue, and she was certain a breeze would come along soon. Ah. There it was.It pushed back her ebony hair and held it aloft. She let the wind do as it pleased and once it was done, smoothed her hair with her soft, ivory hands. After properly watering and pruning the flowers, fruits, and vegetables (each of which had its own section), her chestnut eyes focused on the horizon.
The island she was living on was a beautiful place despite its size. It was not too hot in the summer, nor too cold in the winter. There weren’t any dangerous predators-not to say there were no predators at all-, the game was plentiful, and her garden was flourishing. To anyone else, this place would be paradise.
She knew better: this place was a prison, punishment because she wanted to protect her child.
She sighed, softly. A day did not go by when she did not think of her family. She doubted her husband truly missed her aside from her giving him pleasure at night. She did not blame him; after all, they had only joined because it was expected of them. Of course, they were drawn to each other’s attractiveness, but she felt nothing else for him, and neither did he.
Her thoughts then drifted to her daughter. Did she even miss her? She was unsure. Her daughter was such a strange child, prone to acts of cruelty and deceit. In that respect, she was very much like her father. She never seemed to listen to what she said, and even now she wondered whether she had gotten her friends through intimidation and manipulation. Finally, she thought of her son, the one that she was “suffering” for. Unlike his sister, she knew her son had a kind heart, was a man of honor, and would become of a protector of those who could not protect themselves.
Provided, of course, that her husband didn’t completely destroy who he needed to be. There had been many nights where they argued over whether their son was too soft, or too weak, or needed to be more like his element of fire: all-consuming of anything or anyone not important to him. She believed that was how you made enemies and he believed it made you strong and eliminated enemies.
Needless to say they never came to an agreement and she did her best to put her son on what she thought was the right path. Every day she prayed her son had turned out okay. Every day she thought about him the most as well. She spotted a cloud drifting her way. It usually rained around this time and those were the best times to take a nap.
She had already begun to turn when she looked at the cloud again. It was neither the right shape nor size of a normal cloud and moving much too quickly. Her eyes narrowed; as Lady of the Fire Nation, she had been well protected, but that did not mean she couldn’t defend herself. She did not assume an offensive pose, but she was ready to fight. She watched as the cloud came closer and she was confused when it landed. ‘What is…?’ She jumped when the cloud shook and revealed a…sky bison? She had thought they were all extinct.
The beast growled softly, apparently having disliked the cloud on his fur. Laughter reached her ears and she saw a boy climbing off. “Sorry Appa. We had to make sure that if someone was guarding this place, you wouldn’t be seen.” The sky bison, now named Appa, growled what sounded like a reluctant agreement and lumbered off in search of food. His owner told him not to go off too far before turning to her.
“Hi! My name’s Aang. I’m also the Avatar, but I don’t like to brag about that. You’re Lady Ursa, right?” The boy said, chattering at an amazing speed. Ursa was stunned for a moment but soon answered. “Yes, I am.” Aang’s eyes lit up and Ursa wondered how this child could be the Avatar. “Great! Everyone’s really excited to meet you!” Aang grabbed Ursa’s hand and began leading her to where Appa was grazing, talking on and on about his friends and their personalities.
Ursa felt a little dizzy; a few days ago she thought she would live on this island forever and now the Avatar was here, asking her to get on a sky bison! “Just a moment…Aang.” She had almost forgotten the boy’s name. He stopped and looked at her. “Earlier, you said ‘we’. Who else is with you but your bison?”
At her question, Aang seemed even more energetic. “That’s right! One second.” Aang let go of her hand and ran over to Appa, the airbender speed causing the wind to pick up for a moment. He walked around the bison until he was on the side blocked from her view. “Found you!” She heard him cry. There was the sound of struggling and Ursa wondered what on earth was going on behind the bison. It sounded like Aang was trying to push or pull something it didn’t want to move. “Knock it off!” An irritated male yelled.
Ursa’s heart stopped for a moment. She knew that voice. It didn’t matter that the voice had matured, gotten slightly deeper. She wanted to call out his name, but words failed her. “Then move!” Aang yelled back.
It was quiet for only a moment before felt the earth move and the second boy landed in front of her. The boy growled and picked himself off the ground, “Aang, you’re such a-“ Whatever word he was going to say died when he saw Ursa. He quickly dusted himself off and looked down at his feet. “Um, hey.” He mumbled.
There was a moment of silence, neither one aware that the other was trying to figure out what to do next. Ursa finally reached out and touched his cheek, prompting him to look up. Her fingers brushed over the boy’s scar, tears welling up in her eyes.
Her heart broke at the thought of what could have possibly caused such a burn, but she forced herself to look away from the scar and into golden eyes. Another moment passed before she asked quietly, “Zuko?” Zuko closed his eyes and gently placed a hand over her own. “Mom.” There was so much emotion in that one word and Ursa swept him up into a hug.
As she rocked him gently, she knew that while they whispered apologies and caring words, they were both crying. Ursa had no idea how long they held each other, but when their tears finally stopped, she felt a calm settle over her. She pulled a cloth out of her pocket and dried her eyes, and then passed it to her son.
She hugged him again before stepping back to get a good look at him. His hair was in a different style, but it looked good on him. Her son appeared to have adopted a more casual style of clothing and when she looked into his eyes again she could tell that Zuko had been through a great and weary trial, but in the end he had surmounted it.
“You’ve gotten quite handsome in the years I’ve been away.” “You should see him in his Fire Lord clothes.” Aang piped up, suddenly appearing next to them. Zuko blushed. “If you think they’re so nice, you wear them.” He grumbled. “I only like them on you. I’m happy with the clothes I already have. Red isn’t really my color anyway.” Aang replied with a grin. Ursa had to admit: the boy’s mood was contagious; she was already smiling again.
Although she then realized just what Aang’s words meant. “You became Fire Lord? Is Ozai…?” “He’s in jail, along with Azula.” Zuko replied.
Ursa felt relieved; not for her husband, but that her son nor the Avatar had to kill anyone. “Did you get together with Mai then? I know how much she liked you.” The two boys shared a look. “I did…for a little while. But we decided to go our separate ways. I’m…with someone else now.”
Ursa smiled; the answer was clear now, but it had been so long since she’d teased him that she couldn’t pass up an opportunity. “Is that so? Who would that be?” Zuko’s blush returned and he looked off at something. Aang joined in with Ursa’s teasing as well. “Yeah Zuko, who is it? You never told me you were dating again.”
Zuko looked at Aang and glared, “I did tell you and you know who it is.” Aang put his arms behind his head and walked around. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Knowing you, I bet they’re really good-looking, funny, kind, and a great negotiator.” “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about dear. I am your mother after all.” Ursa said with a smile.
Zuko stood there, not saying a word as his face got redder and redder; it was unclear whether it was from embarrassment or anger. Just when they thought he was going to explode, Zuko grabbed Aang, kissed him, and stalked off to Appa. “There! Can we go now?!” Ursa and Aang shared a smile. “He still doesn’t like to be teased.” She said. “No, but it’s fun to do from time to time.”
Aang ran after Zuko and Ursa watched as the Avatar kissed him back. She chuckled when her son blushed and thought that perhaps her banishment had done more good than she thought. She finally walked over to the bison and gently stroked his fur. “Well then, shall we get going? I would love to meet your friends Zuko.”
Zuko helped her onto the bison and once they all got settled, Appa took flight. Ursa made a noise of nervous fear and Aang laughed good-naturedly while Zuko gave her an apologetic smile. After calming down, Ursa began to laugh as well, her voice blending with Aang’s.
Zuko didn’t laugh, but his smile became warmer. He gently grasped Aang’s hand and looked ahead, even as Aang intertwined their fingers. Zuko squeezed gently, trying to convey everything he couldn’t say with that one gesture. When Aang squeezed back and his laughter died down, with that smile Zuko loved to see on his face, he knew the other understood.
Aang always did.
