(Also I'm not including Nani's boyfriend David in these stories just to leave more possibilities should they crop up).
More than two years had passed since Lilo spent the afternoon on the beach with Mertle. In that time the two had stayed in touch both by phone and by mail, becoming the closest of friends. Sharing secrets, jokes, things from their daily life and Lilo, about to graduate from high school, had chosen to attend college close to home on Kauai. The college on Maui did offer more opportunities but she just couldn't bring herself to move away from Nani and all of her friends. On this day in particular Lilo had just stepped off the bus from school. It had been an average day without anything too strange occurring, half-way up the path leading to the house the silence was broken by a small chiming sound. The noise was Lilo's cell phone, removing it from her backpack she looked at the caller ID which read 'Mertle', flicking the phone open she put it to her ear, “Hey girlfriend, what's up?”
“Oh not much, how about you?”
“Same here, just got home from school.”
“Lilo sweety, can we talk?”
“Something wrong?” Lilo could tell by the sound of Mertle's voice that something was on her mind, taking a seat on steps outside the house she waited.
“Lilo... now that I'm about to graduate I've been thinking, I'd like to move back to Kauai, but...” there was another long pause followed by an audible sigh, “I want to be closer to you, but I don't want to just show up out of the blue and make you feel... I don't know, pressured?”
Again Lilo was put on the spot because she knew what Mertle meant, she wanted to return to Kauai to pursue a relationship. This was something that had crossed the young woman's mind several times, she knew that it might possibly come to this. “Are you sure about this?”
“I've never been more sure about anything in my entire life.”
“Mertle... Mildred, I need time to think about this before I give you an answer. There's a lot to consider given what you're proposing.”
“I... understand. I love you Lilo.”
“I know,” Lilo said, hanging the phone up. This new turn of events was something that really gave her pause to think, leaning back on her hands she started to mull things over in her head. In truth Lilo wasn't sure exactly how to handle this, same sex relationships were still a fairly volatile subject and she didn't know how her friends, or even Nani, might react. Then there was how she felt, she couldn't deny that she had enjoyed herself that day on the beach, but there was a big difference between a little romp in the sand and a committed relationship. She also had to consider Mertle's feelings, if she still wanted to pursue a relationship after two years of being apart she must have really meant it when she said 'I love you'. For the rest of the day until dinner Lilo stayed in her room thinking, she knew how big of a decision this was so she wasn't about to take it lightly.
“Lilo, dinner!” Nani called. Still deep in thought about the matter at hand Lilo started to make her way into the kitchen when she noticed Nani sitting in the living room with a pizza box on the coffee table. She smirked to herself slightly thinking her older sister could still burn water. Flopping down on the couch next to Nani there was an extra large pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni and a two liter of soda, just they way they liked it. Lilo's sister had just gotten home and was still dressed in her deep blue business jacket, matching skirt and white silk shirt. Of all the careers for her older sister to pursue Lilo had never imagined she would become a social worker, though considering the visits from Mr. Vice as a child it made sense in a way. They exchanged hugs, poured a glass of soda for themselves, then went to work eating the pizza which was still fresh and hot.
Throughout dinner she continued to think the situation over in her head, listening with one ear as Nani talked about her day at work. She only shrugged her shoulders a few times whenever her older sister would ask her something, eventually getting her attention. “Lilo, is everything alright?” Nani asked.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah, I've just got a lot on my mind with graduation, college and everything else going on right now,” Lilo said, playing it off.
“I'll bet,” Nani sighed, “I still can't believe it, my little Lilo in college. It seems like just yesterday I was washing the dirt out of your clothes and brushing tangles out of your hair.”
“Chasing after Stitch and I while we were causing all sorts of trouble.”
“That too. Where is Stitch anyway?”
“That's a good question, Stitch? Stitch?” Lilo said, looking around.
Trotting out of the kitchen with a spoon in one hand and a bowl of cottage cheese in the other Stitch looked around as if to ask why he'd been called. Lilo patted the couch next to her and he trotted over hopping up onto the cushion. One of the many things on the her mind was trying to figure a way to see what Nani thought about same sex relationships without letting on about the possibility of her getting together with Mertle. It took some time but she finally managed to think of a way to do just that. “Nani, how to you feel about same sex relationships?”
Lilo's sister about spit out the soda she was drinking and looked down at her, “Where did that come from?”
“Uh... there was someone handing out fliers it on the way home, that's all.”
“I don't know, I've never really thought about it.” This caused Lilo to do a mental face palm, that answer was completely useless, it didn't tell her anything about how Nani might react. Returning to her food Lilo grew silent again, the more she thought the more this began to grow on her. She had dated a few guys around town but nothing had ever gotten serious, now she had Mertle professing her love and to realize someone felt that way about her was nice. No one had ever truly loved her until now, at least not in that way, she knew Nani loved her but that was different. None of the men she had dated had ever shown her the kind of gentle care that Mertle had, the love, the passion, the affection. The thought of the problems their relationship would cause continued to nag at her until a single thought ran through her mind, something Nani had told her as a child. Nothing in life worth having ever came without risks.
With dinner winding down Lilo excused herself leaving Stitch and Nani to watch TV, making her way back to her room she flopped down on her bed. Torn over the decision she continued to wrestle with it, there was a part of her that wanted this, there was also a part of her that was afraid she wouldn't be able to handle it. So lost in thought Lilo didn't realize until snapped back to reality that she had her cell phone in her hand. Mertle's number was on the screen and her finger was positioned over the talk button. Taking a moment to gather her courage she pressed the button placing the phone against her ear. It rang several times before it finally picked up. “Hi Lilo, how are you?” Mertle spoke in a low voice giving away her apprehension.
“I'm okay, I've thought about what we discussed earlier.”
“And?”
“And I have some questions first.”
“Like?”
“Do your parents know about this?”
“You mean about us?”
“Not just that, I'm mean about you being attracted to other women.”
“Yeah,” Mertle said with a small chuckle, “mom was okay with it but dad hit the roof. It took him a while to come to terms with this but he came around.”
“How about a place to stay, a job, supporting yourself.”
“My grandparents said I could stay with them until I get on my feet, and yes they about my preferences too.”
There was a long silence as Lilo tilted her head back and closed her eyes, “This is still all so new to me, I'll give us a shot but I want you to understand that I'm not making any promises. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“How soon can you get down here?”
“Four days.”
“Four days? That's awful fast.”
“Yeah uh... I've already packed and reserved a plane ticket.”
“Want me to pick you up from the airport?”
“That would be great.”
Lilo smiled broadly even thought Mertle couldn't see her, “Alright, I'll see you in four days.” The only response that came was a high pitched squeal before the phone cut off. There was a small feeling of excitement at the thought of seeing Mertle again and yet there was also a lot of tension running through her body. How would she tell her friends, her sister, that she was going out with Mertle. Would they be okay with it, would they laugh, yell, or reject her? The friends she could handle, it was Nani she was worried about. She loved her sister so much, after their parents had died in that car crash when she was young Nani had worked so hard to look after and take care of her, she wasn't sure she could handle the rejection if it came to that. Lilo finally sat up straight steeling her nerves, there was no sense in worrying over things she couldn't do anything about yet anyway. Right now she needed to get ready for her graduation finals.
Four days later...
http://i1114.photobucket.com/albums/k531/morganite2112/airport.jpgThe crowds in the airport terminal were insane, Thanksgiving was just around the corner making this one of the busiest times of they year and people were packed together like sardines in a can. Lilo was having a difficult time just squeezing by the people not to mention Mertle's plane had landed twenty minutes ago. She just hoped her friend hadn't gotten tired of waiting and called a taxi. Shouldering past a few dozen more people she finally caught sight of Mertle up ahead, she was sitting in some of the aisle seats with several bags gathered around her. The crowd began to get thicker as another plane unloaded its passengers so Lilo finally pushed her was out of the main walkway, the aisle dividing the seats wasn't much better but at least she could move here. Mertle had her arms folded over her chest, looking down at the floor it seemed as though she was lost in thought. When Lilo finally made it to the opposite end of the same row she waved, “Mertle!”

(I couldn't find an older picture of Mertle so I used this. Mertle: Age 18).The sound of her name being called brought her head around, when she was Lilo standing there her face lit up. Rising from her seat she walked toward her friend holding her arms out. Lilo smiled back and they embraced one another in a tight hug, when Mertle pulled back holding Lilo's shoulders, she seemed to be outright beaming. “Sorry I'm late, traffic was a beast.”
“I'm just glad you came, I was starting to think you were having second thoughts us.”
“No, only second thoughts about getting here in one piece. Next time you decide to fly somewhere try not to do it over Thanksgiving weekend.”
“No kidding, this place is a madhouse.” Once all of Mertle's bags were gathered the two friends made their way out to the parking lot. Lilo lead the was through the long rows of parked cars dragging a suitcase behind her until finally stopping behind a dark blue 2011 Ford Explorer.
“Oh this is nice, is it yours?”
“I wish, it's Nani's and she still making payments so be careful. If I get so much as a scratch in the paint I'm so dead.” Key chain in hand Lilo slid one of the keys into the back hatch and opened it, helping Mertle load her luggage she closed the door when they were done. Once inside she was about to put the key in the ignition when Mertle reached over sliding her arms around her, pulling her to the side the fiery-haired woman kissed Lilo passionately for several seconds. “I've missed you so much.”
“I can tell,” Lilo said with a smile, “why don't we go get some dinner before getting you settled in.”
“That sounds wonderful.”
