Which one do we want for Lead in this batch? The disembodied voice clattered around in her head, pink eyes falling closed as she tried to focus.
The red one. a second voice clamored to be heard over the din. She hated it when they did this to her. They talked to each other but not to her. It was useless to try and force her way in though.
No the purple.
"Both. Its not unheard of after all. the people will rejoice as they always do.
We need to set in the control." She said exasperatedly, finally.
Which one? Ignored, of course.
If we cannot have the red or the purple, perhaps we could choose this tiny magenta. He will do well.
We must remember to tell the Current. She must know.
She must know?
She was the last we made. She was successful.
To a point.
She will train him. I won't budge on this.
Fine. Pink one. You are to train the magenta. She rolled her eyes and sighed
"Are you certain?"
Don't argue with me.
"Yes my Brains.er...About the control?"
Yes my smeet? the voices rang together in her head, causing her to wince.
"Make it ...That one...please don't make it like me."
Nonsense. You were successful.
"I was miserable." She whispered, turning away toward the hall of smeets.
============
"He'll never fit in." The female pink 'scientist' said to the brains, guesturing with a cybernetic arm toward the window. "He's small. They're already showing signs of disliking him." Her voice was breaking with the weight of empathetic sorrow, turning her pink eyes on the scientist she worked for.
"He'll grow." Dark green eyes narrowed on the pink shrimpey irken
"Will he? I didn't." she fidgetted with a pink-bolted knuckle.
The arm had been a gift from the brains for a job well done.
It was the last one she'd done, she remembered it. The pain, the stress. It was hard when you loved the one you were destroying. It broke a piece of you, made you docile, ruined you to your purpose, made you useless to the brains. Oh but they always rewarded you. Yes. THIS was her reward.
"He will. Worry not Verana."
"Yes sir." she looked worriedly at the smeet she'd been ordered to train, sitting behind a wall of glass with the other smeets.
"There's nothing to worry about Verana. Look. He's approaching the taller smeets. watch and wait." he turned away, marching over to another training room.
===============
"Hi there! Wanna play with me?" the small magenta eyed irken sat with some construction toys, holding up a piece of it for each, the red and the purple.
"You're short."
"and ugly" they giggled together.
"No." they said in unison.
Zim never gave up though. He wanted to be their friend. He'd have it his way.
And he did.
It was by his hand that Purple began understanding science. His hand that trained with Red in combat. The three of them were almost the exact same hieght, and rarely seen apart, unless Zim went in for his special tests.
Red and purple were always curious about those tests. They even tried to find out what they were for once, but their path was blocked and they'd found their paklegs disabled from outside their bodies.
Zim always came back looking stressed and tired, refering to himself in the third person.
"Zim?" Puple asked, sliding an arm around his friends shoulders. "Why don't you ever tell us why they're testing you?"
Zim flinched. "Zim is special. They tell Zim so. Zim will do great things for his empire one day. They hope Zim will do good things SOON" he said, antennae twitching.
"Of course Zim is special," Red said, sitting beside him. "But thats because Zim is persistent. Otherwise you're just like Pur and me. What do they do to you?"
"Zim cannot tell. Zim has promised. Zim has promised and Zim will keep his promise."
Red and Purple exchanged a look over their friends head.
He wasn't going to tell them he'd been stunted that day. He was never going to reach their height, despite the promise he'd shown. There was nothing they could do for him anyway.
===========
Some years later, while his friends had surpassed him,Zim grinned and held up the small blob for his tallest to see. His pride evident in his face.
"Yes, Zim, very nice. But what's it do?" she asked gently, as though Zim was the dimmest creature in the universe.
He always cringed on the inside when he heard people speak to him like this, but when he was around Tallers he couldn't, absolutely COULDN'T make his mouth make the right words.
He'd been hobbled.
The brains couldn't have an intelligent sounding Control-Subject.
"Infinite energy consumer!" he grinned, knowing his reprogramming had made it safe. He was brilliant. His work was flawless. "It eats energ" it lunged forward and ate the Vortian scientists project "NO!" he squeaked, trying to grab for it. "NONO!" it lunged at the tallest and ate her too.
"NO! Its not supposed to do that!" he fell to his knees in distress. "I fixed it! I promise!" He hated that he was being used like this. He had no choice. Every time he'd tried to fix his creation, it came back to him in the same manner that made him have to fix it in the first place. Now because he hadn't noticed the mistake in it this time he was doomed.
He was kept in a hold that night, while the rest of the empire was told of his crime. His friends abandoned him. not wanting the stigma of his crimes attached to their names. As months went by Zim began to get more and more neurotic. He was allowed to go to the crowning of the new tallest, he took his only possession, his blobs collar, certain as he was that he would be killed the next day, and stood in the ceremony behind the rest of the population, calm and willing to go when the affair ended.
He was alone. His beloved friends, two people whom he loved so much, had left him, they'd grown taller without him, stronger, it was clear where they were headed.
Zim was aware of what he was, his tests were really conditioning. The brains didn't want him to have much free will. They didn't want him to make his own decisions. He wasn't surprized when he saw his fingers hit the call button. His heart ached,he would be terminated for this, and he didn't even have a chance to appologize to Red and Pur for keeping his secret.
"RED PUR!PLEASE! PLEASE SEE ME. LOOK. PLEASE. QUICK BEFORE I GO AGAIN!" he tried shouting at them before the blob showed up, but it was too late, it was in the hall and had swallowed up tallest spork before he could even say anything. He reached up and tugged at his own antennae.
Arms clamped around his shoulders, pulling him harshly.
"I love you...please remember...Good bye." he whispered, as the guards dragged him off again, as all the eyes in the auditorium turned to him.
The time came when Red and Pur, Zim's old friends, became the tallests. Their rule was lazy, insane, both of them wanting nothing more than the free high-quality snacks their position offered them. Why should they care? The others had done all the work before them.
Zim knew it was a matter of time before his Tallests, his FRIENDS, his two most beloved people, would be made his next target. He knew his 'betrayal' had brought this careless attitude to them. He'd tried, many years ago, to inform them. To tell them that they had to be good Tallests.
That came with Operation Impending Doom.
Zim was made an invader, at the request of the brains, and given the best tools and a crew.
===========
He clenched his eyes shut. "I can't do this. I can't hurt them"
You will do your job. You will fufill your duty to you're empire.
"They're my friends."
You don't need friends. You have us, and your purpose
"Yes I do. I want them back. All you do is hurt me." he whispered softly, allowing his legs to carry him into the ship, looking around him to be certain no one was with him. When this was confirmed he started smacking his pak into a wall. "I-will-not-do-this" he snarled, listening for a crack. As soon as it rang out he started laughing, letting himself crawl into the cockpit. "I'll pilot this for you, my Brains, but it sure as hell won't be the way you want me to." he cackled histerically.
"sir?"
"Get in! get to work!" he snapped at his crew.
"Yesir!" they shouted in unison.
"You there! Fire that canon." he cackled some more.
"But sir! We're still on our own planet!"
"DOIT! and you twist those nobs! Twist them!" he turned his attention to another, "Pull some levers pull some levers!"
It looked to the brains as though Zim was doing what he was supposed to. He was however, piloting the ship to safety. --I won't be made their tool. I will be free. I will!-- He told himself, laughing at his genius plan even as the control in his pak shorted out other systems. --I'll be free or I'll die!--
====================
He stood, shackled, before his tallests, a pak-gaurd on his back to prevent him using any tools that he might. For the first time in his life he was grateful to be a prisoner. The brains couldn't break him from this. Or they wouldn't. They had another plan, perhaps. Maybe his stalling had allowed Red and Purple to come back to themselves.
Zim mulled this over, a thoughtful, proud smile on his face. He'd helped them. He'd saved them. There was no little voice in the back of his head telling him to kill them.
"You, are a defective Zim. For you're crimes against the empire, your tallest murder, and your just...plain...stupidity, you're being sentenced to banishment in foodcourtia!!" Red said, Purple hovering beside him, nodding the affirmative.
Zim felt it in his heart, the stinging ache and pain of loss, of being hated by his friends. They'd given up on him. It didn't matter, they were safe, thats all he wanted... He'd saved them.
=================
You have to fuffill your purpose! it shouted at him as he worked. Get rid of them!
"NO" He took his break and watched the tv, slumping into the chair with an exhausted sigh. Irkens were practically immortal, it didn't mean they were inexhaustible. His eyes started to drift closed, fingers limp on the arms of the chair.
Familiar voices started animatedly chattering. He peeked through his eyelids, taking in the sight of the dingy restaurant's back-room. Cool, uncaring blues and grease streak-green-yellow stains. On the tv, in a flurry of Smoke and lasers, the flamboyant tallests, Red and Purr were emerging, announcing the next invasion with animated, loud voices. Their smiles seemed bright and delighted. Like children who were introducing a new toy to their friends.
He felt the drive to leave, hop on a ship and fly away, but his better sense was warring with him. He was indipendent of the brains, here. They only whispered at him.
"...Not safe! If I won't do it they'll make another! I have to warn them" He lost the war, giving up in favor of trying his hand at freeing himself. Maybe if the tallests...HIS tallests...saw how good he could be at a job they'd assigned him they'd make an effort to save him and change their fates.
He launched himself from his chair, dashing out the door and up to a voot. Before long he was there. He dashed to the platform squealing and panting as he moved. "Out of my way!!!" he climbed up.
The tallests exchanged a look of "oh no" before looking down at him.
"You must have lost my invitation in the mail." he said brightly, "you're lucky I even made it at all"--Tell them-- he tried to force the words out.
"You weren't INVITED" Red said, staring down at him in distaste.
Zim's heart panged, "You can't have an invasion without me! I was in impending doom one!"
"we know." both tallests reached up to rub their faces.
Time passed Zim finally squeaked out a request for a mission --If I'm far away i can't do anything to hurt them.--
He accepted the new mission. Determined to prove to them he'd beaten what they didn't even know was wrong with him, but the further he got from Irk, the more broken the short in the Control made him.
He tried for years to take down Earth only to be foiled by a human boy. But the time was coming. He could see it ahead. He wouldn't let his beloved Tallests, his old friends, forget who they said he could be. He wouldn't.

Ladies and gentlemen this fic is something I wrote up a couple of years ago, but I've decided to revamp it. It was my second Zim fanfiction and my first upload here. I saw it and tried to edit it directly, but then I remembered that the second chapter was just AWEFUL. I've decided to take pity on me, and everyone else in the fandom, and rewrite the whole thing. Please review.
