American Dragon: Dragon’s Taboo

All was quite in the Long house, as would be expected so close to midnight. It was, however, Friday and Haley would be found still awake. She was making sure all of her school work was done for the weekend, being the over-achieving girl that she was. She let out a light sigh as she glanced at her clock on her desk. She knew Jake was out on missions, but still couldn’t help but worry about her older sibling. She’d been able to tain and participate in some missions herself, but the more dangerous ones always went to him. Those thoughts of the dangerous situation he regularly got into sometimes scared her a little. Haley was finally able to participate in some battles when they all had fought against the Dark Dragon a few months before, however, she still was not powerful or experienced enough to do the more dangerous missions unless it was an emergency. She would never admit it, but she was somewhat envious of him in some ways because of the things he was able to go and do. Here, she felt restricted, even though she knew she could do better then him in many things. Yet, he always managed to come out on top, well most of the time anyways. She always got a good laugh from his mistakes from missions and just general life situations, but she has seen some improvement lately. Haley didn’t know if it was the fight with the dark dragon or if he was finally taking things at least a bit more seriously, but he had been training a lot and gotten maybe a little less clumsy. She most likely would never admit it of course, and would always make sure to point out his flaws because that’s what little sisters do.
Haley rose from her desk and placed her school supplies into her backpack. She dressed into her favorite pink nightie that matched her own pink color when in dragon form. Just about to slip into her bed, she heard a loud thump outside of her door. From the sound of the noise, it seemed most likely to have been from Jake’s room. Figuring that Jake had finally gotten back home, she pulled the sheets on top of her, ready for a good night’s sleep. The crashes and continued thumping didn’t sound very normal though, so she quickly stood back up and rushed toward her brother’s room just across from hers. She quickly pulled open the door and looked inside. The first thing to catch her attention was the partially broken window with what seemed like some kind of liquid splattered on it. Her hand felt against the wall for the light switch inside the dark room and was almost horrified to see the view in front of her once the lights came on.
Laying on the floor was Jake, still in his dragon form, but was covered in cuts and bruises. Blood covered his scaly body and he thrashed on the floor in pain from those wounds. Haley couldn’t believe what she was seeing and rushed in to kneel beside him.
“W..What happened?” She cried out putting a hand against his shoulder.
It took him a little while to respond to her, having to fight through the pain of his injuries. His breath was ragged from his trip, “Goblins…ambush…too many…” He went to get up, but felt his vision blur then utterly collapsed on himself and blacked out.
Haley cried out and quickly ran to the phone, dialing their grandfather’s shop. Both of their parents were out for the week enjoying a second honeymoon so all she could think to do was call him.
“This had bettah be good…” the gruff voice on the other side started but was quickly interrupted.
“Fuudog! I.. It’s Jake!” she sniffled, “he’s been hurt in some kind of ambush!”
“Ho boy, Ummmm alright kid,” he tried to be reassuring with her,” dontcha worry about the thing, I’ll grab a couple of potions and have gramps go check out where he was patrolling’ tonight. Try at take care of him as best ya can in the mean time.”
With the last comment, the phone was hung up and Haley rushed to get some clean towels from the bathroom and some water. Jake was still laying on the ground as she set everything down beside him. She didn’t want him to stay on the floor like that and morphed to her dragon from in a pink swirl of light. Even with the extra strength she got from her dragon form, she still struggled to lift him onto his bed. Once she had finally managed to get him mostly onto the sheets, she grabbed some clean towels and dipped them into some warm water. She pressed it against his open wounds with the damp towels, wiping any dirt and blood that she could get to. She winced a little, seeing the mess he was in. Haley shook her head, wiping some tears with her arm. She didn’t really know why she was so affected, sure he was her brother and loved him as much as any little sister would, but even she was surprised at the feelings that were bubbling up to the surface.
Fuudog stepped through the front door of the house with potions in tow, quickly entering the front door. “ok, Fuudog to save the day here.” Haley lead the canine to Jake’s room and showed him the condition He was in. “Alright kiddo, how about getting yourself some rest while I help Jake here.” She was about to protest but he wasn’t really making it a choice. She hesitated at the door and went back to her room.
After a while she finally got to sleep. Haley tossed and turned through most of the night, partly from worry and also from the dreams that was running through her brain. There was one instance she was dreaming of what might be happened to him in the fight, then another of the few times she caught her brother and Rose making out, then suddenly putting herself in her place. She woke up sweating and confused but shook her head and remember what had happened last night. She rushed into the room to find Fuudog sitting on the floor and Jake wrapped in some bandages after being treated by various medicines and potions. “Hey Fuudog…” she called out softly, seeing him turn around. She was about to ask how he was doing when the canine beat her to it.
“Don’t worry kiddo, he’ll be alright.” he chuckled softly. “ they sure did do a number on him tough. I got a message from gramps a bit ago and seems they rounded up most of ‘em that were involved. Guess there were some in the magical world that didn’t really care to have Jake here in one piece.”
That comment made Haley wince a bit and tear some. “Thanks for all the hlp, I don’t know what would have happened if you didn’t come.”
He smiled and pet her head, “Eh, Jakey here is a tough cookie, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back up and ready to go in a week or so. Just make sure he gets plenty of rest and doesn’t strain himself until he’s fully healed.” He packed up his gear and left back to their grandfather’s shop, leaving Haley to be the one who looks after Jake rather then the other way around.
Moving to the side of Jake’s bed, she watched him as he slept. He was back in his human form now, having changed sometime through the night, making him look even worse in the smaller body. She gave a soft sight, sitting of the side of the bed now. The dreams and awkward feeling still swam through her head while yawning sleepily. She still hadn’t gotten very much sleep that night and was still early in the morning, now being Saturday. Before she even realized it, she was out while laying next to him on the bed. She had more of the strange dreams, imagining herself in Rose’s place and even became a little more vivid as the dreams continued. Dreams like those weren’t completely foreign to her though. She was very smart for her age and had started learning about the “birds and the bees” from school and from their mother. She hadn’t done anything that she’d learned about yet though.
Haley stirred a little with the feeling of a hand against her head and quickly woke up from her dream state. She opened her eyes and looked up at her now conscious brother.
“Hey ya squirt.” he said a little weakly and gave a soft smile.
She smiled back and felt her eyes tear up again and moved up to hug him tightly, causing him to wince in pain and give a little gasp. “Haley… Not so hard…”
She giggled a little and let go of him. “You had me so scared… I almost though you were going to…” she sniffled a little.
“Hey, you gotta give the Am Drag more credit then that.” He smiled softly again, somehow feeling nice to have his sister close instead of fighting with each other.
The rest of the day was mainly spent in his room. Haley would get them both things to eat and drink while they watched movies and talked with each other some. This was probably the most time they ever spent just being around each other that that either of them could remember. For once they both enjoyed each other’s company, feeling like they had been able to become a little closer to each other after his incident. As the night had grown later, Jake thought that they should head to bed for the night. Haley gave a bit of a protest, but was stopped by Jake.
“Hey now, I’m in no condition to argue right now, but we’re both tired and could use a good night’s sleep.” She sighed softly, knowing he was right and slowly got up from the bed.
“Ok..” she sat on the side of the bed and hugged him tightly, but not too tightly, almost not wanting to let go. After a few more moments, Jake took a hand and stroked it against her hair. He leaned down, intending on giving a kiss to her forehead, but she turned her head up more to look toward him, causing their lips to meet. For a moment neither one realized what happened and once their lips continued to stay connected the both blushed and separated. “Goodnight Jake!” Haley said in a hurry and rushed out of the room. Jake attempted to apologize, but she was gone before he could get anything out. They both were now left wondering what just happened with their hearts beating quickly. Jake just didn’t have the strength to continue his thinking of the moment and fell asleep. Haley on the other hand was pacing back and forth in her room. “What was that? Why did I do that? Why did it feel right?” all kinds of questions ran though her head. She felt horrible, yet giddy at the same time for what had just happened between her brother and her. She finally laid down, after exhausting herself and had actually drifted to sleep quite quickly.
The next morning, Haley had woken up fairly late. She grumbled and looked at her clock, which indicated it was about noon time. She shuffled out of bed and made her way down the hall, still thinking a little of the night before. Just as she opened the door, she could hear the shower running. Knowing that it was just her and Jake still, she figured he was well enough to move around a bit. An annoyed groan escaped her mouth. She needed to use the bathroom and didn’t think she’d be able to hold it until he was done. She figured she would just quick sneak in and quick go before he even noticed her. Moving slowly, she snuck past the door and sat on the toilet and gave a light sigh of relief. Now that she was not in as much of a hurry, she looked over toward the shower. Haley’s face flushed red almost instantly as she could see her brother through a gap between the wall and the shower curtain. She was able to see his nude form from the back side. Her breath caught in her throat, fully embarrassed by being able to see him, yet unable to look away. Through a little bit of tugging on her conscience, she looked away embarrassed. As the water continued to flow he let out a soft sigh/hiss as the soap moved across his fresh cuts and scares. “Man, I better be more careful… can’t put too many of these on me and still look good for the ladies.” He laughed some, glad that it didn’t constantly hurt to move anymore.
Once finished, Jake dried off and dressed in some new shorts. Moving down the hallway, he heard some sniffling coming from his sisters room. Giving a light knock on the door, he asked, “You ok Haley?” Waiting a few moments, he opened the door and peeked in, seeing her sitting by her desk looking through a scrapbook of hers. She wiped her face and sniffled again.
“Yeah.. I’m fine.” She gave a small smile.
Concerned,, Jake moved into the space and stood by his sister by her desk, “Sure coulda fooled me.” He glanced at the desk and saw that the scrapbook was opened to the time they all spent in Hong Kong not so long ago. He smiled a little, remembering the fun times they had on the family trip, aside from all the bad that had happened.
