The creaking sound of the boat against the warm water masked her soft footsteps as she crept across the deck of the ship. Only the moonlight witnessed her escape. Though this newly constructed Fire nation ship was a gift from Emperor Zuko himself, she felt as if she were a prisoner.
Katara swept her hair back into a high ponytail and threw one leg over the side of the ship. She grabbed onto the railing and pulled her other leg over. She dangled her body over the small boat attached to the side for a while before letting go of the railing.
Her landing was perfect.
She checked under the blanket to see that all the provisions she earlier in the week secured were still there. Satisfied that her booty was in tact, Katara slowly began lowering the craft on to the water. Gently she began releasing the rope from its wound position and the craft began sliding down towards the turbulent waters. It was a difficult maneuver but with a wave of her hand, the rushing water calmed and the craft safely glided upon it.
She began bending water in the opposite direction of the ship and the craft began to move away. She stopped her motion for a moment to watch the large ship carrying her family moving swiftly towards the blackness ahead. A feeling of relief and sorrow flooded her body but Katara shook it off and continued to bend the water away from the larger ship putting great distance between the two.
The moonlight provided all the light she needed. Only the cold and the soreness of her limbs stopped her from moving the water. Katara sat down in her boat and covered herself with the thick blanket.
She had no idea where she was and neither would they. All she needed was some time to think and then she would return. They would understand she told herself knowing it was a lie.
She moved the food and water aside and lay down in the deep belly of the craft. It small and confining but this was the most freedom she had felt in years.

He walked along the corridors of the ship nodding to those he passed. Smiles filled everyone’s faces because today the Avatar would wed the woman of his dreams. Three years to get close to her, three years to get the nerve up to tell her that he liked her and finally three years to show her how much he loved her. It took nine years to get to this moment. He would make sure that nothing happened to ruin their happiness.
“You are not going to see the bride before the wedding are you?”
Aang smiled down at the old woman. “That is exactly what I am going to do.”
Surprise showed on her face as the Avatar walked by her with determined steps. He did not care about old superstitions he only cared about Katara and nothing was going to stop him from seeing her. Well almost nothing, Toph standing in front of the door holding a pouch of rocks was a formidable obstacle.
“Forget it.”
“Toph I just want to see her.”
The bag rattled loudly so he could hear it. A smile crossed his lips. She was good at intimidating maybe that was why Sokka married her.
“I thought Sokka told you to stop bending while you are pregnant.” Aang gently touched the six-month-old belly marveling at the roundness.
“Who is going to tell him?”
He chuckled at her boldness.
His laughter had matured over the years and she knew he had grown taller just from the point of where the sound of his laughter originated. They would probably never hear it for a while. What was she doing in front of her door? Was she trying to delay his pain and make it worse? Toph had no idea that Katara would do this to Aang. She knew her sister felt nervous about the wedding possibly trapped from Aang’s constant attention. She could feel her Katara’s anxiety could no one else. She was blind could they not see the need for flight on Katara’s face, in her actions leading up to today. Sokka even tried to get Aang to give her some space but once the Avatar had, his mindset nothing Sokka could say or do could settle him.
What was she doing in front of her door?
For the first time in her life, Toph did not know what to do. She did not want anger towards her sister and she did not want Aang to feel any pain. She was torn and stood there like a rock trying to prevent the lives of both from ending.
In the end, the child decided what she would do. A swift kick to her left side and Toph laid her hand to the spot and moved to the side. Aang touched the spot where her hand lay then remembered what he came to do and opened the door to Katara’s room.
Toph closed her eyes, leaned back against the wall beside the door, and waited for his reaction.
It was as if a force of wind had suddenly enveloped the ship and lifted it from the ocean and then slammed it back down with enough force to knock everyone aboard to the floor.
“Toph” Sokka got up from the floor and threw the ceremony clothing on the bed. He ran from his room intent on seeing if his wife was all right. He leaped over the fallen crewmembers in his path and avoided the falling debris from the upper decks. He knew where Toph was and nothing was going to stop him from getting to her.
He found her kneeling on the floor outside of Katara’s room.
“Toph” His strong arms surrounded her and helped her stand. He moved the hair from her face and saw her tears. Frantically his hands searched her body for breaks or bruises.
“I’m okay Sokka.” She grabbed his hands as they rested on her rounded belly. He lowered his forehead to hers and he let out the breath he was holding.
“I don’t know what I would do if you got hurt.” He pulled his hands away from her belly and held her face as he kissed her lips hard. Toph whimpered as she kissed him back with as much force as she could muster.
The kiss only stopped when the Avatar walked from Katara’s room still exhibiting the power of the Avatar state. Sorrow and anger were on his face as he stared at them. Most of his anger he directed at Toph. Sokka moved in front of his wife as Aang continued to stare at her. Maybe the others were afraid of him but Sokka would not hesitate to put a blade in Aang’s chest if he even thought of harming Toph.
A tear rolled down Aang’s cheek and he turned away from them and walked down the hall. Crewmembers that earlier swarmed him now scattered from his presence.
She was gone and whether by means of her own or not, he was going to find her.

Zuko stood back from his newly constructed vacation home to admire the work he had put into it. It had taken him two years of visiting the island to finish his home away from the Capital. He finally had a place where he could be alone and not worry about the problems of the nations. He just hoped that when he returned in three months there would be a nation. He left Iroh and Xin fu in charge of the daily affairs. Their ideas greatly conflicted. A smile crossed his lips for the future battle he would have to listen to when he returned.
Zuko walked towards the cleared area beside his home to remove the rocks and sticks that littered the ground. This was a very tedious undertaking and at times, he wished that he were an earth bender. This was his sparring field. Though he was the Emperor, he still had enemies and needed to keep up his training and stay strong.
Once the field was clear, Zuko walked around it judging its size. A blue stone lying beside the uprooted trees caught his eye and he bent down to pick it up. He gently ran his thumb over the smooth surface. It was not for the texture that he noticed it; it was the same color as her eyes.
By now, she would be married to the Avatar and enjoying the banquet afterwards, he had given to them as a wedding gift. It was not out of the goodness of his heart that he gave them the gifts, it was his uncle.
Katara was a regular visitor to the Capital. She often helped them with problems in the Water tribes. She had a room in his palace and shared his food. They often had dinner alone. She was different from all the other women who wanted to sleep with him and claim part of the throne. She just wanted peace and fairness.
Three years after his father defeat and into her service with him, her demeanor changed. She began acting strange around him, shy and nervous. He knew it had nothing to do with the Avatar that sometimes accompanied her to the Capital. She never acted that way around him.
It took her a year after Aang proposed to her for her to tell him she would marry the Avatar. Her demeanor changed again but this time it was one of sorrow. He did not see the happiness other women showed when nuptials were pending. Maybe it was the constant attention from the Avatar or maybe it was something else.
Zuko continued to rub the stone pondering what might have been for a moment before replacing the stone where he had found it. Fate played its hand, and it was not in his favor. Zuko stared down at the rock as he slowly stood and backed away from it.
A cry from a sea bird broke his concentration on the stone and the emperor raised his head to watch it fly out towards the sea. A small craft drifted upon it as the waves carried it away from his island. Zuko watched other birds gathering and circling the boat. Was someone hurt?
He removed his top and ran towards the beach. He was a very strong swimmer and was able to pull away from the undertow trying to take him back towards the rocky beach. He reached the small craft and towed it back towards the island with the birds following.
Zuko pulled the craft ashore and then peered down at the blanket that covered the body. He pulled it back expecting a bruised or broken body but he only found that fate played its hand again and now, it was smiling on him.
