PART I; All Work and No Play
~*~*~*~*~
This couldn’t be happening! This just can’t be happening! These words, she can’t read them! Life is about to end, and she can’t figure out these word! The very words that could save herself and all she knew and love!
“Jade? How is your homework coming along?”
With a groan, Jade’s head slump forward and slammed on the English textbook in front of her. Homework, on a Friday? When did the school get even lamer? Her uncle Jackie, who was passing by and peeked in, smiled and chuckled at his niece.
“The faster you finish it, the faster you can go to the arcade with your friends.”
With another groan, Jade looked up at the clock on her desk. Seeing the time made her straighten up in her seat in a flash. “But the arcade closes in thirty minutes!”
“Well, then you better get to work.” Jackie chuckled once more, and went on his way.
Jade slumped forward once more. It took her a while to finish her Science, and she has yet to begin with English and she still had Math to do. She swore the teachers were against her in some sort of conspiracy. Maybe Valmont got to them and is using them to enact his revenge?
She thought about this; that’s a pretty cruddy revenge. She should be kicking Drew’s butt as Super Ninja Combat 3 right now! But instead she has to do this crap. Homework on a Friday. She looked up at the clock, and sighed when it was now twenty-five minutes for the arcade to close. Even if she did sneak out, she would only be there long enough for one round.
Why can’t the arcade stay open longer, since it’s a Friday? This very thought struck her. Now she remembered! This wasn’t about just hanging out with her friends; it was the Super Ninja Combat 3 arcade tournament! Free games all day, and stays open till midnight!
She slammed her head down onto her book once more, cursing “Damn homework” under her breath. Even if she tried to sneak out, Jackie was right outside cleaning; he could see her. Jackie had grown wise over the year she has been with him, and has set her down to do her homework in a windowless room of Uncle’s antique store.
Even Tohru kept an eye on her every so often, peeking into the room whenever he passed by. She figured it was best to just complete her homework and get it over with. However, she then thought about how long it took her to complete her science, and combined it with the time it could take her to finish English and Math, and finally calculated it with whatever remaining time for the arcade to stay open.
Even if she did complete it, and even though it is a Friday night, it would be past her curfew, and Jackie would not let her go out.
“What a jip.” She groaned, looking at her book.
Sneaking out was still an option, but she had to be very careful to make sure she wasn’t seen. All she had to do was sneak past them, go to the front of the store, and go out the front door. She stood up off the chair, and prepared herself to sneak out. But when she turned around to head for the door, Tohru passed the door, stopped, and looked at her with an arched eyebrow.
“Err.” She panicked, only for a second, and suddenly started to stretch her arms out, bending to touch her toes. “Just loosening myself up a bit. Get some feeling back in my legs.” She smiled innocently.
Luckily, Tohru bough the faux and walked off. Jade groaned once he was gone, sitting back in the chair. If she successfully snuck out, they can still walk by and see her gone. That would only make things worse.
She rested her head on her book, sighing. It looks like she has no other choice. She has to miss out on the tournament, probably get plenty of gloating from Drew on Monday. If only she can magically make a clone that could stay and…
Slowly, she raised her head up from the book, an evil thought going through her mind. She can, and she did, make a clone of herself using magic once before! And by golly she can do it again! In her fit of excitement, she jumped up from the chair and was rushing to the door, when she stopped herself.
There was, however, a few things wrong with this plan. One was that Uncle could be in the library now. Another was that, if she remembered correctly, the last time she used that duplicating spell; it went all haywire and made multiple copies. And lastly, the copies themselves were exactly like her; so even if she made another one, it too would want to go out to the arcade.
It was then she remembered something; Tohru, during his time as Uncle’s apprentice, did fiddle around with the magic and did come up with some spells of his own. Though she didn’t know what kind of spells he made, but she did know that one was putting a finishing charm for that duplication spell, so no more multiple copies.
That dealt with the Multi-Jade problem, but she still had to figure out how to make her copy more cooperative. She shrugged she shoulder, she’ll figure that one later. She peeked into the hall, looked to right that lead to the front of the store to see Jackie sweeping, and then she looked to the left that lead to Uncle’s library where she saw Tohru arranging some books.
She couldn’t see Uncle herself, so she had to be extra careful. Tohru was too busy to notice Jade tip-toeing into the room, hugging against to wall so she would make a sound. She freaked out when he turned around, but thankfully the stack of book he held before him was tall enough to block his view. She quickly ducked into a side room, which Uncle and Tohru sometimes used when they wanted to read in peace.
Uncle wasn’t her either. Just as she wondered where he could be, she suddenly heard him call out to Tohru from somewhere else in the building. She could hear Tohru set down the stack of books, followed by his thumping footsteps that faded as he walked away.
Jade sighed in relief, looking around the small room. She ran up to the desk and opened a draw, reaching in and moved the papers around. It had to be in here. After a few short seconds of searching, she found what she was looking for.
“Bingo.” She murmured to herself, pulling out a compensation notebook. “Tohru’s notes.”
She opened the book, and skimmed through the pages. Tohru, apparently, had too much time on his hands. There was a spell to make fish taste more like chicken, a spell that changed hair color, and a spell that made hair longer. This was all just simple and basic alteration, but not what she needed.
She then finally came to a page she needed, one that had the revised duplication spell, and, to her luck, a spell that helped mentally alter the personality of another. What luck! Now she came make a clone, and make it more cooperative!
And what was better, was that Tohru, who had WAY too much time on his hands than previously thought, actually came up a way for the two spells to be combined in a single drinkable potion.
“You saved my skin Big T.” Jade smiled. She closed the book and peeked outside to the library. Tohru has yet to return, and when she remained quiet for a second, she could actually here Uncle and Tohru in a distance talking about tea. Uncle was complaining that the tea Tohru brought has expired, but Tohru was trying to explain that it was the same kind of tea but the store was out of their usually brand so he bought a different brand. Uncle didn’t like it all too well apparently.
She quickly snuck out of the room and to the hall, just in time to see Jackie walk into the kitchen to see what was going on. She had to be quick. She rushed to a table where a cauldron and some ingredients lied. She turned on the Bunsen burner the cauldron sat on, threw open the book to the proper page, and began to gather the proper ingredients, mixed them up, and tossed them into the cauldron. When it came time for the personality alteration, Tohru had the hindsight to properly map out how the alter it.
It was actually pretty simple; a certain amount of this ingredient could make the clone nicer or meaner, smarter or dumber, girlish or boyish. Jade figured that making the clone nicer and a tad girlish could make it more manipulative. Making the clone nice would meant it was less likely to deny a request, and making it more girlish could make it less interested in arcade games. She thought of making it a little dumber too, but she thought against it; the clone still had to do her homework anyway.
In no time, the bubbling cauldron produced a nice deep purple steaming goop. Jade looked at the concoction with disgust, but it had already been done. She gathered a small vial of the goop, dumped the rest into a nearby waste basket, turned off the burner, and rushed out of the library. With vial in hand, Jade went to the front of the store and headed into the bathroom.
“Jade?” She heard Jackie call her name. She turned to see him still sweeping.
“Bathroom break!” Jade blurted out and shut the door.
Once inside, she locked the door and went up to the mirror, looking at her reflection. She gazed at the vial of purple goop in her hands, still warm, and looked back at herself.
“Well, here goes nothing.” She raised the vial up, and took a deep breath. “Over the teeth and pass the gums, lookout stomach here it comes!” She tilted her head back and shivered when she felt the warm, pudding like bile travel down her throat. She suddenly gagged gulping it down and coughed. “Ack! Bitter!”
A torrent of coughing wracked through her throat, her whole body shaking violently. Why did it have to taste so disgusting! Drinkable? Like heck it was! As she kept cough, she felt something on the back of her neck. It was odd, like someone was rubbing her to make her feel better.
It then hit her; someone WAS rubbing her to make her feel better.
She looked up, and for a moment she thought she was looking at the mirror. That was until her reflection spoke up.
“You okay?” She asked.
Jade, semi in a state of shock for seeing her clone, nodded and cleared her throat, standing up straight and addressing the copy. Exact height, weight, size, everything. It was another Jade down to the very jacket she wore.
“Woah, it worked.” Jade gasped out.
Her copy only looked at her, continuing rubbing the back of the neck. “You sure you okay? That sounded pretty awful.”
Jade nodded, smiling. “Yeah, I’m fine, thanks.” She mentally cheered herself when she straightened herself up. “Okay, Jade Copy, I need you to do something for me.”
Her copy nodded her head. “Sure! What do you need?”
“I need you,” Jade wondered up behind the Jade clone and gave her a tiny push to the door. “To go down the hall and finish up mine…err…YOUR homework.”
The Jade copy looked over to the original Jade in confusion. “What about you?”
“I… I have some errands to run.” Jade explained, pushing her clone again. “But don’t worry, I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
The Jade clone nodded as she unlocked the door, peeking out to see Jackie still sweeping. Before she stepped out, the clone turned back to Jade.
“Will you be okay?”
Jade shrugged. “I’ll be just fine. Now, go get that homework!”
With a shove, Jade pushed the clone out of the bathroom, and watched as she made her way down the hall. Jade looked over and saw that Jackie was finishing up his sweeping, put it all in a dust pan, dumped it in a garbage can next to the counter, and left the room.
As quickly and as quietly as she could be, Jade rushed out the front door, and made her way down the street to the arcade.
