Zhao ignored the artic winds that lashed against his face. It seemed the weather itself protested his future ascendance to posterity, but he wouldn’t leave such details prevent him to accomplish his destiny. The spirits agreed with his plan to slay the moon spirit, lest they’d never have allowed him to learn about the foolish move that left the spirits of the moon and of the ocean mortal.
He felt nothing but contempt and disdain for the men in front of him. He didn’t hesitate to let them know, constantly frowning as they discussed among themselves to choose who would speak to him. Cowards.
He decided to cut short to that inane talk. “Why would I spare your pathetic city?” he demanded, earning a nod from the war minister Qin who stood by his side. “Give me one good reason to call off an attack ordered by the firelord himself?”
It was a lie and it was not one at the same time. Ozai had never directly ordered him to conquer the northern Water Tribe, more focused on subsiding the Earth Kingdom which was an actual threat, but it was implied that the Fire Nation was to conquer the world, and the north pole was a part of it.
The leader of the group looked at each of his advisors, his expression depicting just how much he realized the misfortune of his nation. “We have nothing to offer but a plea to let us live peacefully. We never harmed you,” he said humbly.
It was false, of course. But Zhao was a smart enough man to realise that none of the inhabitants of the north pole were responsible of the unprovoked attacks from the earlier centuries. Nevertheless, they were on the way. On the way of the Fire Nation, and on the way of his eternal glory.
“It would be dishonorable to call off my attack,” Zhao stated.
“Why do you want to attack us anyways?”
Zhao looked at the girl who pronounced those words. He hadn’t paid attention to her so far in spite of the immaculate white of her hair. He could see, by the looks on her companions’ faces, that they were as surprised as him by her interjection.
He decided to grace her of his goals, for they weren’t meant to remain a secret. “Years ago, I saw my destiny in the library of the spirit known as Wan Shi Tong. I saw that I was destined to slay the moon spirit,” he announced proudly.
He knew it would cause the population to fight even harder, but a fiercer opposition only meant more glory for him when his soldiers inevitably crushed them under his successful leadership.
Predictably, all members the delegation of the northern Water Tribe gasped. The insolent teenaged girl seemed the most hurt of the whole. He presumed her youth explained a more touchable mind. Qin, for his part, merely cocked an eyebrow as he turned his head in his direction.
A flood of comments questioning his sanity followed, but he soon silenced them with a frown and growl accompanied by some firebending. The sons of water returned to their idle chatter when the girl spoke again.
“Take me, then.”
Zhao and Qin’s eyebrows shot halfway up their forehead in shock whereas the men behind her looked more horrified than ever. The leader, especially. Most likely she was his daughter.
“Why… Why would I do that?” Zhao finally enquired, sincerely astounded and recovering from a most disturbing mental image with much difficulty. “Who are you anyways?”
The young woman took a breath before introducing herself. “I’m Yue. The moon spirit saved me. I…” She paused, uncertain. “I could represent your victory over the moon spirit. You wouldn’t even have to disrupt the balance of the world.” She bit her lip. “I could be a trophy.”
Zhao’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets. “What a disgrace!” he yelled, fire crackling from his hands. He motioned to attack the teenaged offender when Qin grasped his shoulder, stopping him.
“While the delegation stays here and discusses this young person’s decision,” he started as he removed his hand, “how about we discuss on our own ourselves?”
That was not a question. And Qin had a higher rank than him, admiral or not, so Zhao followed him, still seething. They entered the depths of the ship, leaving the peace-begging group outside at the winds’ mercy.
Once they arrived in a corridor far enough to not be heard even if Zhao screamed his lungs out, Qin stopped and turned round to face Zhao.
“I’ll surprise you, but you should accept her… surprising… offer.”
“Are you insane?”
“No, not at all. Who would you rather be,” he asked calmly, “the man who destroyed the northern Water Tribe and slew the moon, or the man who enslaved the northern Water Tribe before crushing their revolt, that won’t fail to happen, and who slew the moon to teach those disloyal waterbenders a lesson of honor?” He chuckled. “There’s some kind of poetic justice in that, but I know you don’t care much about that.”
Qin could almost see the cogs turning in Zhao’s head. “As for this young woman,” he continued, “I’m sure you’ll be able to use this trophy to gain favors.” He lowered his voice. “Who knows, maybe Ozai has a soft spot for lovely Water Tribe girls? Or maybe his favourite child does. Azula has quite a… special reputation, deserved or not.” His smile grew slightly. “Or…”
“Or that failure serving the firelord as a son could take a liking to this northern peasant,” Zhao finished with a smirk twisting the corner of his lips. “Weak-minded as he is, he may even help the revolt you mentioned. And then…”
“And then, as you crush this traitor, you’ll enter the pantheon of the greatest heroes of our country.”
“Yes… Yes…” Zhao contemplated, his smirk growing ominous. “I guess that mercy does pay off sometimes.”
