Aang was on the mend but still unconscious. It had been over a week since he'd been struck. Katara harbored a special hate for the Fire Nation princess Azula, and an even greater one for her brother Zuko. Her chest burned every time she thought about how he'd lied to her. She had liked him, had started to trust him, and had even offered to heal that horrible scar on his face. She hoped it marred him forever. She hoped it haunted him like he haunted her after his betrayal.
After joining several water tribe men after their escape Katara had not left Aang's side. Sokka and Toph knew something was wrong, but she wasn't ready to talk about it. It was too humiliating. Her father knew something was wrong too, but Katara felt he had betrayed her as well by leaving their village when she and Sokka were so young. Was it so easy to leave her? It was difficult not to brood over it, to question her worth, and she daydreamed about the ways she could validate herself. Perhaps she could leave on Appa for a while.
Her healing sessions were not doing Aang any good. She slept in the same room in case he woke but began having disturbing dreams. She was in a kitchen, which was also a garden, growing a tree with water bending. She could feel the tree, its life inside her as it grew. She was in a fountain, embarrassingly bare, swirling water around her. People appeared in the fountain with her. Her mother, Aang, Mai, and finally Zuko. She could feel the life and death in each of them. She breathed life into her mother. She healed Aang, brought him back to consciousness. Mai kissed her, drawing her breath into her own body. She took away Zuko's scar.
Each time she woke shaking, the experience eerily real, until she realized the sensation was Aang's life force. She could feel his energy. Whatever was wrong with him it wasn't physical. In time she knew she would even be able to heal his scars, but wouldn't try it until he was strong enough to spare the energy. If she focused on the glowing water she could tap into his subconscious, but he was somewhere else.
They were on a Fire Nation ship, stolen from a crew in a turkey induced stupor. The rooms were dry and functional but Katara felt like the iron walls were closing in. Her thoughts turned to Iroh. Sokka and Toph told her how he'd found where she was being held, how he'd wanted to save Zuko. He'd been betrayed as well. He'd helped them escape and now he was a prisoner in Ba Sing Se. She'd suggested going back for him but the group didn't like the idea.
Katara's thoughts closed in on her, the betrayal, the new sensations, and she felt suffocated until she made up her mind. She stole Appa's whistle, packed a few things for her trip, and quieted the sky bison as she snuck topside to leave. "Appa," she whispered. "I need your help." He seemed to understand her need for silence and they were gone before anyone discovered them.

The thrum of the upper levels of the city had died over night. Ba Sing Se, which used to be a refuge, was now a sinking ship and the people were trying to scurry out. Rumors spread quickly and when the Fire Nation armies arrived a panic rippled through the city. Zuko found himself in front of his uncle's abandoned tea shop. The doors were locked, and the streets were empty. He sat on the steps feeling guilty. His uncle only had the shop for a day and now he was a prisoner.
Azula's attitude towards him had changed. She dangled his desires in front of him to obtain his help, but he knew she hadn't needed him. With the Dai-li she could have just sent him home as a prisoner with his uncle or just killed him. What had been her motive? Why did she ask him to join her?
It could only mean that she had a plan for him and he needed to figure out what it was. He thought about freeing his uncle but it was impossible to even visit him. Azula had several Fire Nation guards on him as well as Dai-li. The palace atmosphere was tense and it was difficult to deter uprisings. Azula barked orders at the Dai-li to keep the tipping balance of semi-peace they had. She wanted him to return home with her after the city was under control and promised he would be the hero who slew the Avatar, but Zuko doubted the Avatar was dead and didn't want to take the fall when he reemerged.
A figure in dark green clothing caught his attention. She was slowly walking through the deserted street and appeared to be taking everything in. Her cloak hid her face, but somehow she seemed familiar. She reminded him of Katara and a fresh wave of guilt assailed him.
"I thought you had changed!"
"I have changed!"
It played over and over in his mind. He didn't even know what he'd meant when he said that, matching her water bending strikes with his own fire but never hitting her. Helping Azula but avoiding fatal blows. Even now he didn't know what to do. He desperately wanted to go home, to greet his father as a hero, but was afraid of that too. What had changed since he left? When he looked back up the dark figure was gone.

"Zuko, are you listening to me?" Azula tapped her fingernails on the table. "Are you going to help me with this or not?"
Mai stared at him and it was obvious he had no idea what 'this' was.
"Where are your thoughts, I wonder?" Mai crossed her arms, annoyed.
Azula scowled and Ty Lee giggled.
"We need to focus on our trip home."
"It'll work itself out, Azula." He rose and left.
"Have you had any luck with him?" Azula asked.
Mai clasped her hands to keep from aiming one of her knives between Azula's eyes. Her attitude used to be amusing, endearing even, but lately it was just irritating.
"I wanted him preoccupied, but if it's not with you then it's on his uncle. He's an idiot, but even an idiot can mess things up if we aren't careful."
Mai tired of Azula's whining. Ignoring the warning in her eyes Mai followed in Zuko's wake. He was headed down the back stairs to the court yard he used to practice, and she loved watching him work his frustration out with his broadswords and fire bending.

Zuko hadn't been back since dinner. Azula sent Mai out looking for him and instructed the Dai-li to make sure Iroh was secure and thought about how to shorten Zuko's leash. She turned to head out of the dungeon and saw a Dai-li agent hauling a girl down the corridor.
"Who is this?" she asked and the agent stopped.
"We caught her sneaking around the palace grounds."
Azula flipped the girl's hood back and was surprised to see Katara glaring back at her.
From behind the agent Zuko was approaching. "Mai said you wanted to see me." He looked annoyed.
The agent sidestepped so they could pass and when Zuko saw the girl he tensed. A vein in his neck betrayed his heartbeat and Azula took another look at her. She was most likely 15 or 16 being developed but with no ring on her finger. This girl had been a challenging enemy, a veritable force in the crystal cavern. Thankfully her arms were locked behind her with rock gloves. She was purposefully aloof, looking down the hall as if she were perfectly fine with being carted off to a cell and would like to get on with it.
"Where are your friends?" Azula knew she wouldn't answer so she cupped the girl's face, heating her hand as she did. "Tell me where the Avatar is or I'll brand you like my brother."
Katara whimpered but finally answered, "You know he's dead. You killed him yourself!"
"Hmmm." Azula didn't know if she was telling the truth but thought she had an idea that would serve two purposes. "Zuko," she said and he looked at her with that mask in place. "Would you meet me upstairs. I have just one thing to do before we talk."
He didn't even nod. He just turned and went back down the hallway. Azula smiled as he retreated. When he was out of earshot she turned to the Dai-li agent.
"Take her back upstairs. Have Alda make sure she's washed and dressed. Make sure they know she is not to have her hands uncuffed. Then lock her up in Zuko's rooms."
Confusion and disgust crossed over the girl's face, but she stayed silent. Azula admired her control but didn't expect her to be so strong after a few days.
The agent's face betrayed desire and disappointment. "Also, be sure she stays untouched." Azula put emphasis on the last word to make sure he got the message. "I'll make an example of anyone who spoils my plan."
The agent stoically nodded and pushed the girl back down the hall. Azula watched them go. Mai would never forgive her if she found out she was giving a girl to Zuko as an Odalisque, but her big brother apparently had a thing for the enemy and she needed leverage.

Zuko was about to leave when Azula finally showed up.
"I need you to deliver a message to the outer wall."
"Can't one of the Dai-li do it?"
"I'd rather have you do it. I trust you more."
She batted her eyes and he rolled his. He knew she was trying to get him out of the palace, but saying so might cause an early enmity so he snatched the scroll from her hand. Frustrated over the capture of Katara he left on his sister's errand. It took a few hours to get to the outer wall and back and when he returned it was past midnight and he was tired. Eye lids half closed he entered his room, pulled his shirt off over his head in the dark, and fell into his bed exhausted.
"What kind of joke is this?"
Zuko jerked and fell out of the bed, igniting flames so he could see the intruder. Katara was standing in the middle of the room, her hair curly and cascading down her shoulders. She looked like a goddess in the flickering light and he wondered if he'd died during his trip to the outer wall and he just didn't remember it.
His door opened and he stood, ready to fight. Azula strode into the room in her robe and carrying a lantern. She took in the picture and smiled like she always did when she pleased herself.
"This is going even better than I thought." She shot flames to the lanterns in the room illuminating the grandeur of the furnishings. Gold, red, and green rugs, tapestries, and blankets. The bed lay against the wall, an ornate bench and large window to its left, the largest part of the room to the right. Furniture surrounded an oblong rug and an empty fireplace was the focal point. Zuko didn't care about any of it, but why argue with Azula? She thought he should get used to being royalty again. At least that was her story.
"Do you like your present?" Azula asked and tilted her head towards Katara. Zuko took her in and realized the gown she was wearing was completely diaphanous. Her dark curvy body was barely hidden beneath it. If it weren't for her hair there would be nothing left to his imagination. Her arms were stretched above her head, her rock bound wrists hanging from a hook jutting out from one of several ornate columns in the rooms. Her feet just barely touched the floor and it must have been uncomfortable but she was glaring viciously at Azula, her teeth grating.
"What's going on?" he asked cautiously.
"We caught her sneaking into the palace. I noticed your interest in her, so I thought I'd give her to you." Azula smiled her twisted smile.
Zuko heard her words but couldn't believe what she was saying.
"Don't look so shocked." Azula said annoyed. "Royalty does this all the time. Don't tell me you never ran into one of dad's?" He glared at her and her smile faded.
"You've been under a lot of pressure, brother. Surely you've relieved it this way before?" She shrugged and headed for the door. "I have. But if I misread your interest we can always give her back to the Dai-li. They were very disappointed that they wouldn't be sharing her company." She winked and walked through the thresh hold, but turned. "I mean it water bender. If he doesn't find a good use for you by morning I'll hand you over to the Dai-li."
Zuko knew she wasn't kidding. She didn't have a conscious and would tell the Dai-li to use her as they liked. Azula knew what she was doing. Seeing Katara like this was intimate and frustrating. His body reacted and he hated himself for letting Azula see any emotion.
He held her enraged gaze purposely avoiding the vision her gown made. She glared at him not bothering to conceal her hatred. "You're going to get us both killed." He warned.
"Are you afraid of your sister?" She taunted and blew her hair out of her eyes.
"You should be." He approached her. "She'll use you against me any she can."
"Against you? You're on her side you traitor!" She growled, sure she was in no danger.
"I'm a traitor no matter what I do. Help you and I'm a traitor to my country and my family, help Azula and I'm a traitor to my uncle, but I don't owe anything to you." He growled and edged closer. "She feels nothing. She cares about nothing unless it benefits her. She wasn't joking. You'll be a plaything for the guards if we can't convince her otherwise."
"Don't touch me!"
He was so close now he could smell the sweet scent of her hair. Her face remained calm, but her breathing had changed. Conflicted he looked away. He wanted her, but not under these circumstances. Her position against the column forced her body to display itself. That gown was meant to kill him, he decided.
"Your choice." He didn't want Azula to hand her over to the guards but what else could he do? He closed his hand extinguishing the lanterns at once and fell into the bed.
"What are you doing?"
"Going to sleep."
"Get me down from here!"
"I don't really want to die in my sleep. Having you loose in the room doesn't sound like a good idea."
"Let me go Zuko." Fear had finally found its way through the anger in her voice and he hissed.
"You think I can just walk you out of here? There are guards in the hall. I wouldn't be surprised if Azula was in the hall. I'm not an earth bender. I can't remove those rock gloves, and I can't fight an entire army of Dai-li by myself. What do you want me to do?"
He heard her sniff and he lit the lantern closest to her. She was crying and he wanted to comfort her, but how? There really was no way out of her situation short of throwing her out the window. He rolled out of bed and went to the window. Even if she could manage the roof she wouldn't be able to climb down with her hands tied and there were already two guards on the ground watching him. Damn Azula.
"Why did you do it? Why did you help her?"
Confused guilt twisted inside him. He faced her with his arms crossed to keep from doing anything stupid. Like trying to hug her. "She's my sister, my family. I've been chasing the Avatar for three years. Capturing him was the only way I could go home." He paused and then softly admitted, "If I'd fought on your side the Dai-li would have all of us locked up and the Avatar really would be dead."
"What about your mother, Zuko? You said they took her from you. Who do you want to go home to?"
"You wouldn't understand. Your family doesn't think you're worthless."
"I wouldn't understand? My father left when I was four to fight in your stupid war! He doesn't even know who I am!" She thrashed against her bindings and winced, her eyelids crushing the tears trying to escape, smearing the makeup they put on her. Her voice was harsh with hurt and anger. "I'm nothing! We didn't even matter! Only your war did!"
She screamed words at him that he'd always wanted to scream and felt the burn behind his eyes. He closed the distance between them and put his arms around her while she thrashed and wailed against him, holding her until she couldn't move anymore. He breathed her in while willing himself not to cry with her. When he thought she was too tired to fight back he crushed her to him and lifted her up, unhooking her arms from the column. They fell limp around his neck and he could tell she was in pain because she tensed and couldn't move.
"I trusted you." she whispered and he exhaled in frustration.
Zuko felt her unwillingly relax against him, her arms twitching while her blood pumped back into them, her head on his shoulder. Her breathing slowed and she stopped crying. He became aware of how she felt beneath his hands, the silky gown between his fingers and her smooth skin, her warm body against his bare chest. Zuko counted the seconds in his mind, waiting for her to find her strength before he lost his.
"Zuko." she finally whispered.
"I'll help you find a way out." He promised, his voice strained even to his ears.
"Zuko..." she whispered again, concerned.
"Stop." Zuko almost choked. "Stop saying my name."
"Why?"
"Because I like it."
She was silent, unmoving. He listened to her breathe. She pressed herself against him and he tensed. She looked up at him, pink lips parted. His restraint wavered. What was she doing?
"We are enemies." Maybe she forgot.
"Not at the moment."
"You don't know me." He said more to himself.
"I know you better than the pack of guards in the dungeon."
"Is that why you're doing this?"
"No. I'm doing this because I'm here with you now and," she moved against him. "I want you."
Zuko's blood thudded in his ears. He wondered what her plan was but couldn't focus. She gasped when he crushed her to him and claimed her mouth like he'd wanted to since the first time he saw her. She tasted like the wine Azula must have given her and she hummed against his lips before opening her mouth for him. The gown felt as silky and thin as it looked. He spread his hands over her curves and held her to him, letting her feel his reaction.
She pressed herself against him, rocking her hips, surprising him, and he could feel her heat in waves. His thoughts flashed to Mai for a moment and how she'd kissed him. Kisses that he'd returned wanting so much more. Wanting this. He pushed one hand into Katara's thick hair, cupping the back of her head so he could hold her there while he bruised their lips. Part of him wanted her to push him away, to come to her senses and realize what she was doing. The rest of him just wanted her.
She gently bit his lip, then licked it. He reeled and he wondered how many times she'd done this before.
Fueled by doubt, anger, and lust he heaved her onto the bed. She gasped but didn't protest. He pushed her gown up to explore the unprotected silkiness of her skin, her thigh, her rear, while he pinned her to the bed. He felt like he'd left his body leaving someone else here who could do these things, who could take what she was offering and bury himself in her.
If she had a plan he would at least get what he wanted before she killed him. At the moment dying this way seemed like a pretty good idea. He throbbed against her and sucked on her lower lip.
She gasped and bucked beneath him. Her frustration over her bound hands was obvious. He realized she was shaking and relented but she followed him, put her cuffed wrists behind his head and pulled him to her.
********************************************************************
Azula very slowly cracked open Zuko's door to check on her investment. It had been an hour, surely he'd gotten somewhere. A thrill went through her stomach straight to her groin when she saw them. They were on the bed, her big brother poised above the girl. His arms and stomach muscles clenched, his nude body impressive and ready. Azula hummed her approval.
Positioning himself between Katara's legs his mouth found a hard nipple through the gossamer gown and she arched up with a cry, her arms strained above her head. Azula felt her body react as she watched him lift her hips up with one strong arm and thrust into her. Katara screamed and struggled against her restraints but he didn't stop and Azula wondered which hurt worse, the hold he had on her nipple or the violent way he was driving into her.
She'd only planned to peek in, but she didn't want to look away. Elated that she'd coaxed her brother into this heinous act she relished the way his fingers dug into the girl's soft skin, the complete look of release and absence of thought on his face, the girl's white knuckles as she tried to brace herself against the headboard. Zuko hadn't even bothered to take that gown off of her. With a cry Katara whipped her face in Azula's direction, her eyes shut tight, and she saw a tear run down to the sheet.
Azula quickly shut the door before she was noticed. Feeling victorious she went back to her own rooms, beckoning one of the Dai-li to join her.
