Setting: Radiator Springs and outlying areas of Carburetor County, after the events of "I'll Meet You on Route 62" by Nevuela.
Author's Note: This was written as one of my “Eight Requests” trades on deviantART for Nevuela, who requested a Mack/Vee fanfic. IMYOR62 is a work in progress and the ending has not yet been published, so this story was written on the assumption that Mack (a 1985 Mack Superliner) and Vee (a Chrysler Concorde) became a couple. This fanfiction contains spoilers for IMYOR62, which can be found on deviantArt and Fanfiction.net. Vee is used with permission and is Nevuela's original character.

Vee opened the door to the oven, and the aroma of Mack’s birthday cake wafted throughout the tiny kitchenette. Her room at the Cozy Cone was hardly suited for undertaking a homespun project such as baking, but without a full-line grocery store or bakery in Radiator Springs, her only other choice would have been to buy a cake from out of town and hope it survived the trip back home under the scorching desert sun. She had decided that, even given her limited domestic skills, a cake would fare better if it originated in her apartment.
As she slid out the baking rack and removed the cake, she bumped into the small refrigerator that was positioned close to the oven and nearly lost her grip on the pan she was holding. The Chrysler steadied the wobbling tray and made a silent promise to herself that she would someday soon have a larger apartment if she settled in Radiator Springs.
If. That was a joke. She innately knew that she stood no chance of leaving the town anytime soon, and that she had no reason for ever wanting to. It had been several months since she had swerved into a roadblock that turned out to be none other than her best friend from high school, Mack Trucker, in Radiator Springs. Since that night, she had come to accept that fate had brought them together and she belonged here, by his side. Neither had grown up remotely close to the town, and yet they had nonetheless both been pulled from the very separate lives they’d been living and had been equally shocked and delighted to find each other again in such an unlikely location. Vee was not the superstitious type, but she did believe in destiny and clearly hers had been to find Mack in the single-stoplight town.
Leaving the cake cooling on the table, Vee frowned, reminding herself that she still hadn’t found a suitable present for her lover. Her shopping options were once again limited, and although Radiator Springs had several quirky shops that catered to tourists, she hadn’t wanted to settle for an impersonal gift like the trinkets Lizzie sold, or a gift certificate for a utilitarian item like tires, fuel or new paint. As she left her Cone and made her way to the Curio Shop run by the Model T, she hoped she would come up with something that Mack would appreciate, preferably before the party she was planning for that evening.
“Oh, you’re back, honey,” Lizzie called out from behind the counter as Vee swung the door open and rolled inside. A trio of fans swirled up a current of air and a fair amount of dust inside the old store. “Still looking for the perfect present for your hotrod?” The Chrysler smiled patiently.
“I am, but Mack’s a Superliner, remember?” she pointed out, her voice gentle. The grandmotherly car seemed to have selective recall; she hadn’t forgotten talking with Vee a few days before about Mack’s upcoming birthday, but she evidently had not been able to remember exactly who it was that Vee was dating.
Lizzie’s expression lit up with sudden recognition. “Oh yes, you’re the girl who’s courting that enormous truck!” Vee laughed, then turned her attention to the shelves of dry goods Lizzie kept on hand for the local residents, who had not had a market in their town for decades.
“That would be me,” she replied proudly, “and his cake is cooling off at my place while we speak.” She chose a tub of icing and some candles off the shelf and brought them to the counter, sighing. “I just wish I could give him something special.”
Lizzie squinted at her. “You’re pretty special to him, so you keep that in mind if you don’t find what you’re looking for in a store,” she said wryly. “Back in the lean days of the Depression, Stanley and I didn’t have money for the fancy geegaws and presents that you kids love to buy for every occasion nowadays. Sometimes your love is the best thing to offer, and it doesn’t cost a penny. It would sure mean a lot more to him than a jackalope sculpture or a silly bumper sticker from this place.”
Vee was hardly shy when it came to matters of the heart and physical expressions of love, and she’d worked as an escort for years, sometimes getting more involved with her clients than she’d planned, but somehow hearing a car who was nearly three times her age give the advice that she should offer herself as a present to her lover made her blush a little. It also made her think. The night, not long ago, that she and Mack had given themselves to each other had seemed so natural; his desire for her had been pure and honest, and his patient willingness to take their relationship far beyond its previous boundaries had all depended on her approval. He had been anxious, excruciatingly so, that he would hurt her, and had nearly backed out of the whole affair before she’d shown a little aggression toward getting what she had wanted just as badly as he had. They had only had a few precious opportunities to enjoy that kind of closeness since that wonderful night, and each occasion had been treasured by both.
“And I’m not talking about an innocent kiss on the bumper, missy,” Lizzie emphasized, unnecessarily. “I can tell plain as day that you and your Mack already crossed that bridge a while back.” Vee took the bag off the counter, her face burning, and promised the Model T she would think about it. Lizzie may not have been able to remember who Mack was initially, but she was certainly capable of making keen observations.

Vee beamed at the sight of Mack returning home, the brim of his ballcap shielding his eyes from the final rays of the setting desert sun. He returned her smile and increased his speed noticeably when he spotted her waiting for him by the lean-to that served as his house until the Rust-Eze racing headquarters were completed.
“Honey, I’m home,” he joked, applying his brakes as he came to a stop. “Sorry I’m a little late. I was hauling away a load of shredded metal from Mater’s and there was a long wait to use the scale at the scrap depot.” Spotting a glow behind Vee, he craned his cab to see behind her. She obliged by moving aside, revealing the frosted cake, its top spiked with thirty-three candles. It certainly didn’t look like the work of a professional, but it had been a labor of love on her part. Not believing his eyes, Mack broke into a wide grin. “You remembered!”
“I wasn’t the only one who did,” said Vee, and from behind the long wall that made up Mack’s home emerged everyone from town, all those who had opened their hearts to him even when their shops and homes were entirely too small to accommodate him. The Superliner was met with a flurry of greetings and showered with gifts, and he smiled abashedly at receiving so much attention. Mack had never expected this, and the only previous hint that anyone knew of his birthday had ironically come from Lightning’s manager, Harv. Early that morning, the agent had sent him a reminder that he ought to renew his hauler’s insurance for the next year and then uttered an unenthusiastic acknowledgement of his special day before ending the message. Accustomed to taking orders and serving the racing team he’d been hired to transport, Mack had long ago learned not to mix his personal life with his professional duties, so having an entire town’s population there to celebrate with him was something completely new.
Also new was the sensation of Vee’s lips tight against his own, right in view of everyone. Though only the most unobservant vehicle in town would have missed their blossoming relationship, they had started out as close friends and still tended to act that way when others were around. Mack wasn’t about to let that prevent him from returning the kiss with enthusiasm, and when Vee pulled away her face seemed to be glowing as brightly as the candles.
“I couldn’t resist that another moment,” she quipped, and told Mack to make a wish. Hoping she already knew what he might be dreaming of, he extinguished the entire cluster of candles effortlessly with a heated puff of air from his grille. Vee grinned back at him. “There’s no doubt about it, your wish should come true.”
She knows… thought Mack, hoping nobody else present had caught what seemed to him like blatant flirtation. He enjoyed having the Chrysler snuggled close to him as they shared a catered meal Flo had prepared, then tore into the pile of presents. After several hours of celebrating, he found himself contentedly coasting along aside Vee at the evening doo-wop cruise.
“This has been the best birthday in a long time,” sighed Mack as their tires gently brushed each other.
“Oh, you’ve had a better one in the past?” teased Vee, bumping against him playfully.
“Sure, nothing can beat the year I turned ten. My mom let me have all the neighborhood kids over for a campout in our backyard. We were all sugared up from the party food and stayed up all night!”
Vee chuckled and gazed up at him. “That does sound like fun.” A campout, now that’s an idea… Her thoughts were interrupted as they passed Sarge, who acknowledged them with a begrudging nod.
“Thanks for letting us celebrate with you, soldier,” he said to Mack, only giving Vee a perfunctory glance. She’d shown him up not long ago, and both knew it would be a while before he would be able to bring himself to be cordial with her. Behind the veteran cruised Fillmore, a little wobbly on his wheels as usual since he had consumed most of the organic fuel he’d brought to the party.
“Congratulations on your Saturn return, man,” he drawled, as Mack listened in confusion, “now that you’re thirty, this marks your arrival at adulthood and you’ll be entering a period of deep self-introspection.” Sarge cut off the aged hippie’s rambling with a curt snarl of distaste.
“He’s thirty-three, you burnout. If you even take any stock in that astrology garbage, that time ended for him three years ago. Only someone with a fried brain like yours would consider someone an adult only after three decades of his life have gone by! He became a man at eighteen and signed up for the draft like any good American should have.” Fillmore only blinked in response and turned back to the road, followed by the Jeep who sped up to retake the lead.
“Don’t pay him any heed,” Sheriff warned, pulling up alongside them. “Whether it’s astrology or the non-organic ingredients in the birthday cake, those two will find a way to argue about it. They’ve been doing this for years and they both feed off it.” He laughed, revealing a smear of icing on his mustache. “I wish you the best for the upcoming year, Mack, and you too, Vee, as long as you stay out of trouble.”
Sheriff departed for the police station as the music ended and Vee was left wondering. “Both Sheriff and Sarge spoke civilly to me tonight for a change. Birthdays really do bring out the best in people, I suppose.” As if to prove her point, when they returned to the lean-to, Tow Mater was already there and had busied himself loading the food platters onto a cart to take back to the V8 Café.
“Howdy,” he said, his voice high-spirited as usual. “That was some party an’ a whole lotta fun. I put all yer gifts in yer house fer ya.” Mack thanked him, and he continued. “Them season passes to the Rustbucket were from me, an’ boy did they take some doin’ to git a hold of, but I hope ya like ‘em.”
“Vee and I sure will enjoy them,” Mack assured him. Mater eyed them curiously.
“Far be it from me to pry into yer affairs, but are ya two datin’?” he asked. Vee grinned up at her lover.
“You’d better believe it we are,” she replied, before Mack could respond.
“Aww…” the tow truck sighed, “that’s great. Ya two are both great friends to me an’ I’m happy to see ya together.” He narrowed his eyes slyly before backing out of the lot. “Well, I’d better leave ya be so’s ya kin give him them thirty-three birthday kisses fer good luck!” Astonished, Vee could only watch him leave.
“He’s something else,” she finally said when Mater was out of view. “So, how was your birthday?” she asked, realizing that everything had been put away and they were simply standing alone in the dark, a few feet from each other and both unsure of what to do next.
Mack’s engine purred with appreciation. “Thanks for going through all that trouble for me. It was everything I’d ever wanted.” He thought of the gifts Mater had stored in his house. “Everyone was so generous and I never saw this coming. Which present was from you?”
“None of them.” Vee felt rooted to the ground, but she knew that what happened the rest of the night would be now-or-never, depending upon her actions right at that moment. “Don’t take it to mean I’m a cheapskate, but every time I suggested something you always insisted you didn’t really need it, or it wasn’t your style, or you could do without it.”
She was unable to keep the seductive edge out of her voice as she wheeled a little closer to him. “So I tried to keep in mind what you liked best in life, and I came up with hauling and…that other thing.” Mack’s eyes hungrily feasted on his girlfriend in front of him. “And as much as you enjoy your line of work, I think you’ve hauled enough for today.”
Now that there was no question left as to what she had planned for them, Mack lost no time in locking their lips together in a deep kiss. He was careful, as always, not to become so swept up in passion that she was rolled backward against his lean-to, but everything in him desired nothing more than to throw all concern aside and love her with all that he had, right there.
Vee’s engine trembled with excitement as he embraced her with little restraint. This was something new and thrilling in their relationship, to be able to show affection for each other openly instead of stealing kisses after darting around a corner to escape prying eyes. She sighed against Mack’s hot breath emanating from his grille; it felt as though he could pull her entire front end into his mouth, so great was the attractive force between them.
“Hey!” a deep voice boomed, jolting their lips apart. “Perhaps you newcomers aren’t aware, but we do have decency laws in this town!” Sheriff rolled past the lot, huffing and fixing Vee with a disapproving stare.
“We’ll get a room,” she challenged him, and he startled. The cruiser had expected his words to have more of a shaming effect.
“Vee…I want you,” breathed Mack in her ear when the officer had left. She felt a pleasant tingling at his touch. “But this is too awkward, here,” he pleaded.
“How about another birthday campout, then?” she asked, setting off down the road and knowing that he was eagerly following behind.
