Chapter One: Encounter in the Forest
000
“How could you do this to me!?” Sokka hissed, eyes glowing dangerously, like the embers in dying firelight. Zuko attempted to reach out a calloused hand and touch his cheek, but the younger male hissed again, slapping his hand away and taking a few steps back.
A week. One week. Only a freaking week!
That’s how long had passed since Zuko had made the ultimate choice and betrayed them all. The horror of Aang’s limp, charred body still taunted his every waking thought, while his dreams were haunted by the very dark prince who had just ambushed hum in the forest on his way back to camp. Their group was weary, beaten, and torn to the point of despair. Aang wouldn’t speak, and Katara never left his side. The Earth King was becoming sickly, having been thrust out into the raw, wild world so abruptly. Toph often spoke to him in surprisingly soft tones –she was an earth-bender, the closest thing he had to home. All of them seemed to wander around like ghosts, recovery from the battle still far from their minds. Never before had they all seemed so very much what they truly were –children.
“I wanted to see you. I’m sorry.” But Zuko didn’t look sorry in the least, and Sokka felt bile rise up in his throat at the heated look in his eyes. This wasn’t right, not in the least. It hadn’t been right months ago when they’d first started this perverse affair, and now, just the mere thought of those strong, hot hands running down his sides and along the back of his thighs made his skin crawl and breath catch painfully. The prince took another step towards him and Sokka fell back several feet, arms waving wildly as he caught himself on a thin tree. He moved to put the tree between them and clenched his eyes shut, knees letting out as he collapsed onto the ground, forehead to the rough bark.
Zuko hadn’t moved again and Sokka didn’t know what to do. Why did these things have to happen? Why did there have to be a war and why the HELL did he have to be in love with the enemy’s prince?
Yes… the enemy. If Aang had hoped Zuko would join them or fight against the fire nation, then he had been proven severely wrong. Zuko was their enemy. His enemy. He had inflicted scars and burns on Aang’s small, pubescent body such that no child should ever be forced to bare. And yet still, their pure, innocent Avatar cried for the firebender. He cried for the decisions he’s made and the encounters they’d surely face again. But Sokka could no longer cry. His tears had dried up long ago.
Sokka’s eyes ached slightly, but he took in a long breath to calm his frazzled nerves. He was not a bender. Strategically, Zuko had him outmatched in more ways than one. He’d surely had no problem holding Sokka down in the past…
Scowling darkly, Sokka stood up and looked at where Zuko still hadn’t moved. Curious…
“He almost died.” He said instead, and Zuko didn’t flinch.
“I came here to see you, not discuss the Avatar.” Zuko stated in a neutral voice.
“Well that’s new. Usually whenever you wanted to see me before, I was just a quick fuck in the woods after yet another one of our failed attempts to capture Aang.” Sokka sneered at Zuko in disgust. Disgust at the prince, at himself, at allowing the act to happen, and at how he wished things could be different.
“We almost succeeded last time.” Zuko smiled darkly and Sokka felt a shiver run up his spine as he realized just how sharp Zuko’s teeth were. He could probably eat Sokka if he so desired. Chew him up and spit him out –just like the old days.
“I never loved you.” He spat. It didn’t hurt to say the words, regardless of how untrue they were.
Zuko, however, flinched slightly for the first time since they’d started the exchange. Sokka felt satisfaction bloom in his chest, but it was very quickly dashed when Zuko advanced on him again. Sokka’s eyes widened as fear gripped him. Was this it? Was Zuko finally going to off him?
Zuko quickly stepped up into Sokka’s personal space and grabbed the water-tribe boy’s upper arms tightly. He stuck his face close to Sokka’s and whispered in a growl, eyes narrowed:
“You don’t have to love me. But you still belong to me.” Zuko pushed Sokka back up against the tree and wedged his leg between Sokka’s thighs. “Or are you telling me there’s someone else who can make you feel this way?” He raked a rough, dry hand from Sokka’s left hip to his rear, squeezing and smirking when Sokka made a strangled sound. “You know I’m right.” He said in the dark.
And Sokka did know. He knew that at that exact moment there was nothing he wanted more in the world that for Zuko to hold him gently, whisper sweet nothings in his ear, and bask them in his warmth. At that moment, he could have forgotten about the war, destinies, Aang, and the fact that the man holding him in his arms could produce fire from his body while his own tribe respectively controlled water.
He just couldn’t do this anymore.
“Zuko,” Sokka breathed airily, finally saying the prince’s name. He felt the strong body pinned up against his tense briefly, and then relax. Hot lips descended on his neck and he cried out loud, arching mindlessly to give better access, arms grappling in their hold, wanting to reach up and grip Zuko’s thick hair.
“Sokka,” Zuko whispered in reply, licking at the spot he’d been suckling and releasing Sokka’s arms. Immediately, two tan arms tangled around his head, jerking him up to crush their lips together in the first bittersweet kiss of te night. Sokka knew there would be more. He was too weak to deny himself the pleasure he’s been craving for so long. But for how long would this last…?
And as if in answer to his question, Zuko suddenly broke the kiss abruptly pulling back from Sokka with an odd look in his eyes.
“You’re coming with me.” He declared. Sokka bristled immediately and tried to step to the side, but Zuko had already grabbed one of his wrists tightly and was pulling him deeper into the forest –the opposite direction of camp.
“Zuko no!” Sokka shouted, suddenly desperate. But hell, what should he have expected? He tried digging his heels into the dirt but it did little to help. No! He wouldn’t…he couldn’t… Goddammit!! Why did there things always happen to him!?
“Stupid, stupid…Uhg!” Sokka tried to pry the solid fingers off of his wrist and stumbled and tripped as a result. “Stupid idiot!” Zuko didn’t look at him. “Stupid prince!” He screamed. The hand on his wrist began to warm and Sokka’s eyes widened comically. “Stupid, stupid Zuko! Fine! I’m coming. Just don’t burn me you dick!” Sokka quit pulling and instead reached up and thwacked Zuko repeatedly on the back of the head. “Lemme go –omph!” Apparently the taller boy had enough abuse when he threw Sokka roughly on the grond and twisted his arms behind his back.
“You will shut up now.” He said, low and dark near Sokka’s ear and twisted his arms until Sokka made a small sound of pain. Satisfied with the stillness of the body beneath him, Zuko pulled a thing cord out of the pack at his waist and quickly wound it around Sokka’s wrists. He stood up then but Sokka didn’t move. After a moment of silence., Sokka rolled over and stared up at Zuko with half-lidded eyes. Tired eyes.
“Why must you do this to me? Can you answer me that, Zuko?” he didn’t whisper it, but the words came out softly anyway. Regardless, in the silence between them, the words felt obscenely loud. “Oh Zuko…” Sokka sighed, closing his eyes drearily and resting his head on the soft dry dirt.
He heard a sigh come from above him but didn’t open his eyes. Suddenly, Sokka gasped as Zuko picked him up a the waist and hefted him onto one shoulder.
“You are a burden.” Zuko muttered. “You are loud and moronic and crude.”
Sokka really wished that each of those barbs hadn’t pierced him as badly as they did. Perhaps it was just Zuko’s boney shoulder digging into his stomach.
“Your blood is inferior and you cannot even bend. Hardly a warrior by firenation standards.”
Sokka scowled and wanted to kindly tell him what he thought of those comments. Bending? As if…blood…uhg. Arrogant, self-centered bastard prick…
Huh…apparently he’d said that last part out loud, if the tiny burn that kissed his ankle had anything to say for it. Oh well…Not like Zuko wasn’t used to hearing these type of comments. Of course, the probably didn’t usually come from Sokka.
“So where exactly are we going?” Sokka grumbled. He wasn’t in the mood to struggle anymore, but he wasn’t comfortable anymore. Man…his stomach hurt.
Zuko didn’t say anything right away, but the silence was louder than words and made Sokka such in a harsh, panicked breath.
“Oh man. Azula…” He gasped, clenching his eyes shut. “Oh spirits, no way…I should have known.”
Sokka began to struggle with renewed fervor. “Zuko! Put me down! I don’t know what the hell’s going through your head, but your sister will KILL me!” He thrashed wildly, causing Zuko to grunt and toss him (surprisingly gently) onto a soft patch of grass. Sokka hissed at him and tried to back away. “Did you hear me!? Azula’s not gonna be coy with me. She’ll toast me for sure!”
Zuko growled suddenly and plopped down on the grass next to him. He roughly dragged a hand down his face and moaned in aggravation.
“Then what the hell would you have me do?” He snapped, and Sokka stared at him blankly.
“Are you STUPID!?” He exploded. “Just let me GO!” Sokka felt his face heat up in immense anger. “’What the hell should you do?’ Shit, Zuko! Get the hell away from Azula for starters! She’s the one that’s made things the way they are. She’s brainwashed you!”
“She’s my sister!” Zuko yelled back. “I don’t see you abandoning your sister in the middle of a fight.”
“That’s because we’re on the same side you ass! Spirits…”Sokka moaned and rolled into a sitting position with his hands still bound behind his back. “Which side are you on, huh? I think that’s the question you need to answer. Jeez…” And if Sokka’s arms had been freed, he would have smacked himself in the face in annoyance like Zuko had done earlier. Actually, he would have been game to smack Zuko again too, for good measure. The idiot needed a good bitchslap.
Zuko paused silently, his barely contained anger visibly simmering as he stared at Sokka hard. “Which side…?” He asked, and then all the tension seemed to drain out of his body and the fire left his eyes. He let out a giant sigh and looked away tiredly. “…that…I…” He tried, but failed and brought a hand up to cradle his jaw as he slouched in the grass, apparently defeated. Sokka shifted next to him and Zuko groaned as his vision began to swim lightly.
“I’m tired too, Sokka.” Zuko whispered in an empty voice. He reached up with surprisingly gentle fingers and stroked Sokka’s left eyebrow, trailing down a soft cheek to trace thin lips.
“No one understands why things must be like this.” Zuko murmured. “War is fear, pain, and death. That I know to be truth.” He slid his hand behind Sokka’s skull and slowly brought their lips together, only a hair’s breath separating them. “That is why you must come with me.”
And for the first time that evening, Sokka could actually see the fear in Zuko’s eyes. How much did this poor prince have to suffer? How much more pain would he have to endure? Sokka wondered if the look in Zuko’s eyes was reflected in his own. He stretched his neck and trailed his lips up Zuko’s strong cheek, gently kissing the damaged skin of his scar. At that moment he felt as if neither the world nor the war could tear him from Zuko’s side. But still…
“Please,” Sokka begged. “Don’t take me to Azula. You should know better than anyone. Azula won’t allow you to keep me. You can’t protect me.”
Zuko tensed, and Sokka assumed he agreed. Azula was insane and unpredictable.
“No.” Zuko declared. Sokka started, jerking back from the firebender as his blood ran cold.
“What?” He asked, incredulous.
“My mind in made. You’re coming back with me. I’m sorry, but things will be better in due time.” And he hoisted Sokka up onto his shoulder again, ignoring the loud cries and panicked thrashing.
“Zuko no!” Zuko kept walking. “No! Oh spirits…oh help me…no….” The taller male made a sound of annoyance as Sokka almost caused him to stumble. He unkindly dumped Sokka off of his shoulder onto the ground and met his sky-blue eyes.
“You can’t,” Sokka whispered, voice thick as tears finally began to slide unhindered down his cheeks. Zuko’s forefinger and thumb firmly pressed into his neck. “You can’t…”
And everything went dark.
…To be continued…
