“Ha…Jonny,” she panted. “Right there…mmm, yes. Yes,” she cried, as she wrapped her legs tighter around his neck. “Oh God…God…Stop,” she breathed heavily all of a sudden, and then received a confused look when she met his eyes. “Come here,” she ordered, pulling his head up and kissing him deeply for a few seconds. “I want you inside me,” she breathed against his lips and felt him grin.
“Your wish is my command beautiful,” he smiled, clearly more than ready to fill her request. “I love you,” he breathed in her ear, as he positioned himself to enter her.
“I love you too,” she moaned, closing her eyes and biting her bottom lip in anticipation, but he didn’t push into her.
“Open your eyes,” she heard instead. “Open your eyes,” she heard again, but she didn’t want to.
“Jessie, get up. You’re gonna miss your flight. GET UP,” her roommate, Claire, yelled and shook her shoulders, bringing her out of a deep sleep.
“What time is it?” she asked groggily.
“It’s time for you to get up,” Claire told her. “Jeez, that must have been some dream,” she commented before heading into the bathroom.
Jessie was glad that she left the room because she couldn’t hide the blush that covered her entire body as her dream came flooding back to her in all of its glorious and frustrating details. She’s been having these dreams for the last four months, but every time the dream is about to come to its climax, so to speak, she gets interrupted by her phone, or roommate, or alarm clock, and wakes up tied in knots. It’s not easy wanting someone so badly that you can’t have, but it’s even harder when that person is your best friend and 3,000 miles away.
“Jesus,” she breathed, and then plopped back down on her bed. She wishes she were alone in the apartment so that she could relieve some of this tension, but at this point she wasn’t gonna get to be alone until sometime late tonight. “Jesus,” she breathed again at that realization and then turned onto her side putting a pillow between her legs. That’s when she caught the time and remembered why her roommate had woken her.
“Shit, I’m gonna be late,” she cursed and jumped out of bed. “Claire, let me get in there real fast,” she begged, banging on the bathroom door. “My cab is gonna be here in five minutes. I can’t be late. Please…Thank you,” she said as the door opened and she rushed in.
Five minutes later, she was on her way to the airport after a hasty goodbye to Claire. She doesn’t really think she breathed again until she fastened her seatbelt on the plane. She had just made it and was unbelievably happy because she would’ve had to wait another four hours for the next flight to Maine, and her father would’ve been pissed. That didn’t matter anymore though because she was on her way home for Christmas break, and back to the man that’s been haunting her dreams for months.
The dreams started the first night she got to school in August, and haven’t stopped since. She’s even starting to have daydreams that are affecting her concentration in classes. The confusing part is that she has no idea where all this is coming from. She’s loved him for almost two years, but this uninhibited lust is all new to her. It’s all she can think about, and the fact that they still talk so much on the phone isn’t helping. Every time she hangs up, she wishes that she had decided to go to a more local university, or even Harvard, instead of Stanford. At least then they’d be on the same coast, and maybe be able to work something out.
‘Maybe he’ll decide to come to Stanford too,’ she thinks. At least that’s another idea that she hasn’t been able to get out of her head for months. She knew that she was gonna miss him when she decided to go to school so far away, but she never knew it would be so much. One of the reasons she came here was to move on. Being on the other side of the country meant that she would really only be able to go home for Christmas and the summer, and not any weekends. At first, she thought that was a good idea, but now she really regrets it. She wishes that she could be closer to him and the rest of her family.
She tried to get some sleep during the flight, but couldn’t shut her brain down long enough to concentrate. She couldn’t get Jonny off her mind, and decided that she needed to do something about it. She’s known for quite a while that she’s been physically ready for sex, she just hasn’t found anyone besides Jonny that’s made her feel emotionally ready too. Maybe she can just talk to him about it. She can talk to him about anything else. Besides, all of her other firsts have been with him. First dance. First kiss. First love. She’s ready, and she wants him to be her first, and maybe even her last, lover too.
When she stepped out of the airport terminal a few hours later, Jonny was the first one that she saw, and any doubts that she wanted him flew right out of her head. He had the biggest smile on his face as he headed towards her.
“Hey,” she smiled right back, meeting him half way and jumping into his arms.
“I missed you, Ace,” he whispered in her ear and pulled her a little closer. Jessie couldn’t help the jolt that went through her as flashbacks of her dreams came rushing back in that moment.
“I missed you too. So much,” she added, pulling back reluctantly. “Can we go for a run tomorrow morning and talk?” she asked softly, determined to talk to him about the way she’s been feeling, but still needing some time to figure out exactly what she’s gonna say.
“I can’t wait,” he told her.
“Neither can I,” she said quietly to herself, and then realized that the rest of her family wasn’t here. “Where’s my dad?” she asked, suddenly a little nervous.
“Our dads had to go to Washington. God forbid the President make a major decision without my father,” Jonny mocked, and Jessie laughed at him as they made their way onto the highway. “They should be back in 48 hours,” he finished.
‘That’s perfect,’ Jessie thought. ‘Maybe this is fate.’
“So how does it feel to be free for a whole month?” he asked. “I’m jealous.”
“Hey, you’ll get the same time off next year, so don’t start,” she countered and then bit her lip in concentration. She was trying to think about how she should brooch the subject with him. Maybe she shouldn’t wait until tomorrow since they’ll be alone tonight. Then again, they’ll be alone tomorrow too.
They drove in a comfortable silence for about twenty minutes, until he broke it.
“So, how’s it going with what’s his name? You haven’t mentioned him the last couple of times we talked” he asked curiously.
“Oh, Bill…alright I guess, but…I don’t know,” she replied.
“Well that wasn’t a very good answer,” he smiled.
“Let’s just say my interest has waned, and I fully expect it to be totally gone by the time I return next month,” she told him.
“So what went wrong?” he asked, but she wasn’t sure that she wanted to give him the honest answer yet. “Jess?” he prodded.
“Sex,” she blurted out without thinking, and he almost swerved the car into oncoming traffic. “JONNY,” she yelled.
“Sorry,” he apologized quickly. “You just caught me off guard. So uh…it’s no good or what?” he asked haltingly with a nervous laugh.
“Maybe we should talk about this later,” she suggested, afraid that he’d injure them.
“It’s fine. You just surprised me,” he told her. “We’ve never talked about sex before, but we can. We can talk about anything, so let me have,” he said a little more coolly.
“Ok,” she started slowly, and saw him swallow deeply. “All he wants to do is have sex. It seems like that’s all anyone wants to do out there. I don’t know if that’s because it’s California, or because it’s college, but I’m surrounded,” she breathed deeply.
“So, he wants to do it a lot then?” Jonny asked. “That not surprising,” he offered.
“I know. It’s just that he doesn’t care about me at all. I’m just a sex object in his eyes,” she told him quietly.
“Then why did you do it in the first place?” he asked a little angry.
“I didn’t…I mean I haven’t. That’s the point,” she said.
“Oh good,” he breathed out in relief. “You had me worried there for a second.”
“Please, like I would let some sad little man take advantage of me,” she said.
“Well, that sounds more like the girl I know and love. I was hoping the California college experience wouldn’t change that about you. I love it that you don’t take any crap from men. Plus you’re the most finely tuned bullshit detector I’ve ever met. It makes me worry about you slightly less,” he told her, as they pulled into the front gate of the Compound.
“I can take care of myself,” she told him, getting out of the car.
“I know that, but men are dogs. I know that’s cliché, but they really are. You can’t ever let your guard down,” he warned.
“You’re not a dog,” she said, wrapping her arm around his waist as he carried her bag into the house.
“That’s only cause you taught me well,” he said, kissing her head. “I just don’t want you to have any regrets,” he whispered.
“I’m so glad to be home,” she said once they were inside. ‘Maybe being here will knock some sense back into me, and I will stop lusting after my best friend,’ she thought.
“Pizza?” he suggested.
“Sounds good. I’m gonna grab a quick shower,” she told him, heading up to her room. “Call me when it’s here.”
As he watched her go, he couldn’t help but appreciate how good she looked. Not that she looked any different, but it was just great to see her again. He didn’t really realize how much he missed her until he saw her walking out of that airport.
He also couldn’t help how relieved he felt when she told him that she hadn’t slept with Bill. He couldn’t deny that he wanted to be that guy, but he also couldn’t try anything without looking like a total jerk off after the talk they just had. Not that he’d ever have the guts to try anything anyway, but still.
About thirty minutes later, they were in the kitchen enjoying their pizza.
“Mmm,” Jessie said. “Nothing in California compares to Vincent’s pizza.”
“I told you that you shoulda stayed on the East Coast,” he smiled, but he wasn’t totally kidding. He really did wish that she was closer. Maybe they could work something out if she were closer.
“I wish that I had,” she sighed.
“Really?” he asked a little hopeful
“Yeah,” she admitted.
“Why?” he wanted to know.
“I like it at Stanford, don’t get me wrong. The professors are great and the campus is beautiful, but I don’t like being so far away from you guys,” she told him. “I thought those feelings would go away after a month or two, but they haven’t. I’m already dreading going back. I’m sick of the people.”
“Transfer to Harvard,” he suggested boldly. “Maybe we could get an apartment together. Then we wouldn’t have to put up with the dorm bullshit.”
“Are you being serious?” she asked.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’d much rather live with you than anyone else, and if you’re not happy out there…” and he let that statement hang.
Jessie didn’t know what to say. The idea was appealing and not, all in one. She loved the idea of being that close to him all the time, but doesn’t know if she could handle having to watch him with other women. If they were together, it’d be amazing.
Jonny took her lack of silence as an indication that she didn’t think it was a good idea, so he tried to backtrack. “Race probably wouldn’t go for the idea though”
“So you definitely decided on Harvard then?” she asked, coming out of her trance.
“Yeah, it was between Harvard and MIT. They both have great programs, but I decided that I’d rather go to the school that my father didn’t,” he said with a smile.
“Probably a good idea for your own sanity,” she agreed.
“I know,” he said, as he began to clean up the kitchen. “Wanna go watch some movies?” he asked.
“Let’s do it,” she said. “What do ya wanna watch?”
“Your choice,” he told her.
For the next six hours, they watched movies and joked around on the couch, but, around midnight, Jessie decided that she couldn’t be in the same room with him anymore It was weird. Being around him again, all she could think about was how much she loved him, just like before she left for school, but now the lust part was there too. It didn’t seem to be going away like she had hoped it would. She needed to go to bed before she did something rash.
“I’m gonna head up to bed,” she announced in the middle of their fourth movie.
“Alright, I’m heading up soon too,” he said.
“We’re still gonna go for a run and talk tomorrow, right?” she asked a little breathlessly.
“Yeah,” he replied, looking a bit confused. “Are you alright? We can talk now,” he offered.
‘He’s so sweet,’ she thought. “I’m fine,” she smiled, becoming more convinced by the second that she was making the right decision. “I just need to figure something out, and then I wanna talk to you about it,” she said, and then she kissed him on the cheek and went upstairs.
Once she closed the bedroom door behind her, Jessie couldn’t wait for the sun to come up. She was pretty confident that he wouldn’t object to her idea. He was a great guy, but he was still a guy. She knows he’s been dating a lot since she left, but she doesn’t think anything too serious has happened. She’ll find out for sure tomorrow though. With that, she fell asleep with a smile on her face, and excited about tomorrow. It wasn’t long before she got caught up in her dreams again.
