Chapter I
“And that is how we defeated commander Zhao.”
The two women sitting around Sokka cooed and praised him for his bravery. Sokka smiled across the roaring fire at Toph. He knew she could hear the longing in their voices to have him. He hoped she was jealous and would finally admit she liked him more than a friend. First, she would have to admit he was her friend.
Toph could hear the laughter of the two women over the raging sea slamming into the cliffs below them. This was one of the few times she wished she was deaf.
Sokka place an arm around each of the giggling women and continue to smile at Toph. His heart leaped when he saw her tremble from anger or chills, he did not care he got a reaction.
“Yes ladies I was in rare form that day.”
Toph rolled her eyes wishing they were not sitting on sand.
The giggling began again and Aang rolled his eyes. He turned away from the scene and began looking for Katara.
She stood at the edge of the cliff staring out over the sea. She was, no, is beautiful; Aang thought as she stood in the moonlight letting the wind whip her wet black hair around her body in a chaotic fashion. Her dark skin seemed to shimmer but on closer inspection, he noticed she was shaking.
Aang saw his opportunity to tell her what was in his heart and show her with his body. He was older now, taller, and stronger. He knew she noticed him and felt the same way as he did. He would take the first step and then she would make the next.
“I will be back Toph.”
“Oh please do not leave me with Sokka and the giggling idiots”As if on cue, the giggling began again.
Aang smiled. “I promise to return with Katara.”
“They are the reason she jumped in the water in the first place.”
Aang began to pry her fingers from his arm. “Toph I promised.”
She sighed and released him and Aang walked away.
“Maybe jumping in the water was not a good idea.” She wrapped her arms around her freezing body and groaned when she heard the giggling again.
Where did Sokka find those women? It was as if they just popped out of the sand.
A thick blanket surrounded her body. Katara smiled when the strong arms holding it encircled her waist.“Thank you Aang.”
He moved her closer towards his body and breathed deeply of her pure scent.“Katara”
Her body began to tingle when he spoke her name again softer then before. She closed her eyes.
“There is something I want to tell you.”
“You did that on purpose admit it Toph.”
Aang and Katara turned to see Sokka standing and yelling at a smiling Toph floating some pebbles above her open hand.
“They said I was useless and I had to show them differently.”Aang began walking back to stop the rising tempers from getting even bigger.
Toph dropped the pebbles and stood hearing something out of place.
“Get away!” She screamed but the explosion rocked them from their feet. Another blast knocked Sokka and Toph into the forest of trees. Aang struggled to his feet.
“Katara”
He did not see her as the next round of explosives came in his direction.
The two women that were so infatuated with Sokka came from the darkness smiling. They bound the Avatar first with the special rope from Captain Jebo of the rogue Terra team that was in exile. The taller of them left to search for the other female that was with the Avatar while her partner dragged Sokka from the trees and tied him up.
“I do not see her.”
“She fell over the cliff; she is probably dead by now.”
The taller female looked out over the water for any sign of her.“Come help me get them in the wagon it is a day’s ride.”
~~~~~~~
Toph began moaning from the pain in her hands. It steadily increased. She began screaming as the sickening sounds of her bones breaking filled the air.
“Leave her alone!" Sokka inched his way towards them in the wagon.
The taller woman pushed him back.Aang was still unconscious and bound.
Toph screamed again as the mallet came down the smashed her other hand. Her attacker grabbed her around the neck and pushed her to the floor of the wagon.
“Now you are useless.”
The mallet fell to the floor beside Toph’s trembling body.
Katara’s body floated upon the water through out the night taking her further and further away from her friends. She slept in painful darkness with her mind jumbled and her body bleeding. The water carried her safely to shore and washed her upon it until it could not reach her anymore. It gave one of its daughters to the land and ebbed away.
Zuko groaned again, when Iroh began to sing. It was not that his uncle could not sing; it was the fact that it was the same song for two days.
“Enough... please Uncle.”
Iroh smiled and was quiet.He looked back from the way they had come and saw the water retreating into the sea. That was nothing amazing normally but it had to be at least twenty feet inland.
“Something is there on the rock.” Iroh began to walk back.
It is probably a seal Uncle. You know your eyes are old.” Zuko continued walking.
“No the sea put it there, laid it there.”
Zuko turned to see the old man climbing up the slippery rock and kneeling beside something.
“Zuko,”
He was not about to come look at another seal pup but when Iroh lifted the head of the woman into his arms; he began to walk towards the rocks.
Her face had small cuts as did her body but it was the large gash on the side of her head that worried Iroh.Zuko climbed up the rock and saw his enemy in his Uncle’s arms.
“She is with the Avatar.”
“She is in need of medical attention.”
Zuko began looking around. “If she is here where are the others?”
Iroh heard her moan in pain. “We need to get her help.”
Zuko glared at him. “This is my chance to get the Avatar for killing my Father.”
“What will that prove? You will still be an outcast. Your father wanted to kill you Zuko and everyone else. Now help me take her off these rocks.”
Iroh returned his glare. The two stayed locked in the challenge until Katara began moaning again. Zuko gently lifted her into his arms and walked down the rocks noticing the water rushing up as if it would catch him if he slipped.
“We must go head back to the village we passed and see if they have a healer.”
Zuko sighed. “I am not providing charity to my enemy.”
“She was not your enemy Zuko, your father was, and you just can not see that yet.”
Zuko walked faster carrying the limp body towards the smoke on the horizon. He would find her a healer and heal all her wounds and then she would tell him where the Avatar was. His Uncle was right about one thing she was not his enemy, Aang was.
