Act I
The episode opens on a garden in the Western Air Temple. The camera zooms into Zuko and Aang practicing firebending while Katara watches from a fountain nearby. Her gaze is furrowed, and the camera pans to see that her attention is centered on Zuko. The scene cuts to show the dark-haired prince firing a blast toward Aang, who jumps out of the way. Having evaded the blast, Aang looks over at Katara, giving her a small smile, which she returns, her eyes softening. Zuko yells over at Aang from off-screen, and the camera cuts to him.
Zuko: Hey, keep your eyes on the battlefield!
Aang: (turning back to Zuko) Oops, sorry.
Katara: Why don’t you guys take a break? You’ve been at this for hours!
Aang: (excited) A break sounds great!
Aang begins to walk over toward Katara, but it stopped by Zuko’s hand on his shoulder.
Zuko: I need to make sure that you can complete the easier forms before we start on the hard stuff. You need to be able to bend competently even when you’re tired.
Katara: (hands on hips) That’s ridiculous! If he tries to bend when he’s exhausted, he could get hurt!
The scene cuts to show Katara on the left side of the frame with Zuko and Aang on the right. Katara and Zuko glare at one another, and Aang fidgets, sensing an impending fight between the firebender and the waterbender.
Aang: Guys, guys, I’m fine to keep going. It’s okay; please don’t fight!
Zuko: (eyes on Katara) Good, Aang. Go stretch out some more and we’ll start another round. (looks back at Aang) And I expect to see more firebending this time.
Aang bows and runs to the other end of the garden to stretch. Zuko and Katara stand beside the fountain, and Katara folds her hands under her chest, her expression suggesting that she’s waiting for Zuko to speak. He sighs and steps closer to her, still not looking directly at her as he speaks.
Zuko: Katara, I know you’re worried about Aang after… what happened… but he’s doing fine. You don’t have to watch him if you’ve got other stuff to do.
Katara: (eyes closed) I’m not watching him.
Zuko and Katara’s eyes meet. Her expression is guarded, and her body is tense. Zuko notices this, his gaze lingering on her arms crossed over her chest, and he nods, turning away. An expression of disappointment is clearly visible in his good eye. As his back is turned to her, Katara’s expression changes, and she looks as though she’s about to say something, but changes her mind as she returns to her spot on the fountain as the boys begin sparing again. In the midst of their duel, Toph enters the scene.
Toph: (off-screen) They’re still practicing?
Katara turns as Toph approaches her, sitting beside her as the boys continue in the background.
Toph: (nodding towards Zuko) He seems distracted. I wonder why.
Scene cuts to focus on Zuko and Aang’s match. Zuko’s body is tense and his movements are jerky. Aang dodges wide to avoid a blast, and counteracts another with a burst of air.
Toph: So how long are you gonna watch?
Katara: Until they’re done.
They watch as Zuko sends out another fire-blast. Aang jumps over the blast, but doesn’t move closer. As Zuko moves, he looks over at Katara, and their eyes catch as he bends. He executes another movement, this move more sloppy than the other ones. Katara rises.
Katara: (exasperated mutter) This is stupid.
She walks closer, calling out to Zuko.
Katara: Why don’t you guys call it a morning?
Zuko: (to Katara) Not until he masters fighting fire with fire. (To Aang, shouting) Quit dodging and block it!
He fires another shot, and the camera cuts to Aang jumping over it by spiraling into the air.
Aang: But Zuko, I’m tired, and I fight better this way.
Zuko: That’s not fighting, that’s running! Stand your ground and use the forms we learned!
Frustrated, Zuko fires another shot at the boy, and Aang ducks. The camera cuts to Katara with the fountain behind her.
Katara: Hey!
The water in the fountain jumps at her cry, and Toph looks toward the water with a bemused expression. Katara stalks closer to Zuko.
Katara: That’s enough! If you keep going, you could hurt him! (her voice lowers) Or is that what you want?
Zuko turns away from Aang to fully face Katara. He steps closer to her, and Katara looks a little surprised, but holds her ground. They stand close together, their bodies practically touching. Steam rises from Zuko’s clenched fist.
Zuko: What’s that supposed to mean?
Katara: What do you think?
The camera cuts to Toph looking toward Katara, then Zuko, then back to Katara.
Toph: (chuckling) At least with Sparky here, it’s never dull.
Toph rises from the fountain and stomps her foot. A pillar of rock rises, pushing Aang toward her. Aang yelps, and the camera cuts to Toph as she calmly holds out her hand to grab his arm once he is beside her.
Toph: (to Zuko) You guys have had your fun. I’m stealing Aang for some Earthbending. (to Aang) Come on, Twinkletoes!
Zuko: Hey, we weren’t done!
Toph: Please! Your form’s all sloppy, and you’ve got other things on your mind besides Aang and Firebending. You can have him back when you’re more focused.
Toph looks over at Katara as she says “focused”, and then turns to Aang.
Toph: Come on.
She drags him away by his sleeve. As they walk, Toph returns the ground to normal, and they leave Zuko and Katara alone. The two look at one another for a moment, before Katara turns to walk back inside the temple. Zuko follows her, watching Katara from the base of a tall staircase as she climbs. Cut to a closeup of Zuko as he clears his throat to speak. Katara looks back down at him over her shoulder.
Zuko: So how long’s this going to go on?
Katara is silent, and Zuko becomes a bit perplexed.
Zuko: Oh, nothing to say to me now? You seemed to have a lot of things to say earlier. A lot of unnecessary things.
Katara turns and the camera pans out to show the two of them on the stairs. From her position on the stairs, she takes up the top half of the frame, while Zuko looks up at her from the bottom half.
Katara: Nothing’s unnecessary when Aang’s safety is concerned.
Zuko: (stepping up toward Katara) You’re talking about Aang, but I’m getting this funny feeling that this isn’t about him at all.
Katara: What’s that supposed to mean?
As she responds, Zuko slides past her, their arms brushing as he stands a few stairs above her.
Zuko: You never did answer him when he asked you if it was okay for me to be here.
Katara: It was his decision.
Zuko steps down to where he is on the step above her.
Zuko: Then you should respect that decision, shouldn’t you? Or just come out and admit the truth- that you don’t want me here.
Katara bristles and shoves past him, but as she passes him, Zuko grasps her wrist. Katara glares back at him with a look of fury, but Zuko holds fast.
Zuko: I saved you from the assassin. I sacrificed everything I had ever worked for to be here! What more do I have to do?
Katara: Are you so naïve to think that after you terrorized my homeland, chased us across the world, took me hostage and tried to burn us all alive, that I can just let that go?
Zuko: (whispering) You… were going to.
Katara swallows, and she looks away.
Katara: Yeah, until you proved me right.
Zuko: About what?
Katara: (looks down at Zuko, voice cracking) You.
Katara jerks her hand from Zuko’s grip as he takes in her statement. Katara’s expression is pained as she turns away and dashes up the stairs. Zuko looks after her for a moment, sinking to his knees, and sits alone on the staircase.
