Movers and Shakers
Part 1
by Reppa
Wildwing carefully watched his team as they practiced, going over what needed improvement. Dive had his speed, Grin had his strength, Tanya had her brains, Mallory had her dexterity, and Duke had a combo of speed and dexterity. He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, going over their plays, and going through their flaws. His little brother was a puck hog, their team tech took too much time thinking than playing, Grin was somewhat slower, Mallory had a temper, and Duke was a show off. He himself had to work around thick padding.
He shook his head with a sigh, they won their games though and played the best in the entire league, they would do better if they dealt with their faults but they were only natural and gave them character. "All right, team." he called, skating out to the middle of the ice where they usually gathered before and after practice, "I think we'll be well prepared for tomorrow's game."
After he got that said, he sighed as he turned to see Phil approaching, his arms flung out in greeting. "Boobies!"
"No..." A very automatic response on Wildwing's part as of late. It seemed to him like Phil was finding far too many publicity gimmicks.
"C'mon!"
"No..."
Wildwing looked over his shoulder as he felt someone nudge him, and he looked down at Duke who perked a brow at Phil, "I'd hate ta ask what it is now...but what is it?" Curse that ex-thief and his intuitive nature, it came with the trade he supposed. The pudgy human beamed and made his way to the benches where the team was gathered, looking around bright eyed which aroused suspicion from the ducks, he beamed, "It's for charity!"
"That said about the last two and we were either attacked or abducted, Phil." Wildwing snapped, acid in his tone as he folded his arms with a scowl, "No more, we've had too many problems."
The team went back to what they were doing, changing in the locker rooms and going down to headquarters. As they stepped off and into the ready room, Tanya seated herself at the console while Wildwing leaned on it beside her, "We really need to do something about Dragonnaus, perhaps we should make a sweep of the city again today, never hurts."
"But, big bro! Phil's got us on that photo shoot!" Nosedive yipped, shaking his head, "How're we gonnill ill on that without him, y'know, moanin' about it laters??" That was right, Phil had them scheduled for a shoot, one he hadn't bothered discussing with them.
Wildwing sighed, unfolding his arms and pushing off from the console. He shook his head as he gestured with his hands, "Two of us will go in the Aerowing. The rest will go to the shoot. Duke, you're with me."
The team's resident ex-thief smiled a little, glad to be out of the shoot, leaving a disgruntled Nosedive and a somewhat angry Mallory, who felt she should be the She She stomped up and elbowed the gray mallard aside, "I should go with you, Wildwing, what support can a sword give you?"
"A fair bit, along with his other skills. If we encounter a problem, Duke's one of the duck's on this team I want around. Besides, Duke doesn't have problems with machines like you do." Wildwing explained, his tone relatively somber, looking from the fuming duck to the gray feathered drake, "C'mon, before Phil comes down and starts an argument."
The two of them made towards the Aerowing while the others stayed gathered around Drake 1, Mallory folding her arms bitterly, "I've noticed when we pair off that Wildwing always goes with Duke." Her statement got stares from the rest of them before Dive shook his head, "Sounds like someone's jealous!"
*
Meanwhile, the Aerowing took off into the air over Anaheim with Duke at the pilot seat and Wildwing went about using the mask to scan the city. "Nothing yet." he murmured softly, glancing at Duke momentarily before looking back out over the city, "..." The one-eyed duck glanced at him with a frown before he took a glance around, "Turnabout?"
Wildwing looked up at him to give a response before the ship gave a violent quake, "What the...?!" He sat up in his seat as the Aerowing gave another quake and started a sharp descent. Spinning in his chair, Wildwing reached over and grabbed the steering wheel Duke was losing control of, "Land it, don't nose it!" It wasn't much of an option as the Aerowing nose-dived (no pun intended) into the ground before flipping over on it's roof, then rolled back over onto it's underbelly churning up dust.
Wildwing moaned as he sat up from Duke's lap, a hand on his thigh as he strained to look past the console to see if he could find who shot at them. When he saw nothing, he turned his attention to his teammate who was leaning a bit to the side and seemed to be slowly coming around and sitting up straight before he looked at Wildwing and then to the white mallard's hand on his leg, "Um..."
The white mallard started for a moment, looking at his own hand and then at Duke's flushed face before he quickly removed his hand. Then he looked at the smaller drake again, trying to avoid eye contact before he sat up and looked around, "Duke, can you tell who shot us down and where we are?"
Duke nodded slightly and went looking about the console trying to figure out what worked. As he looked he glanced around at the outside as Wildwing undid their seatbelts and stood up, "We landed a lil outta town, Wing, but I don't see any signs of what might have blasted at us." As he talked, the ex-thief got up himself and looked out the top hatch, "Nothin'."
Wildwing pulled out a couple of puck launchers as they cautiously came down the ramp. So far they saw nothing, and the white mallard wondered if it was a mere blast and run or if it was something the Saurians were up to. When they checked that all was relatively clear, they holstered their puck launchers and Wildwing opened a com to the others, "Nosedive, Mallory! Do you read?" All he got was static and he didn't like that very much as he looked at the other duck, "This is bad."
Duke looked down at his own com and frowned up at his leader, "It looks like there's some interference." He looked down once more before he looked around at their surroundings, they were a little more than a mile from the city, "Now what, Wing?"
"I'll do a perimeter check, not too far. I want you to see if you can get if you can get the Aerowing up and flying again. If not, we'll look for the source of the interference."
With a sigh, Duke partially turned and looked at the Aerowing, "I'm not a mechanic, Wing, but I'll give it a try." They nodded at each other and went about their tasks.
Wildwing turned on his jet blades and skated around, making a 1/4 a mile perimeter sweep and coming up on empty when he skated back towards the ship, noting their present situation to himself, "Shot down, no way to contact the others, there's nothing around to shoot us down and I can't see what would jam our coms." His thoughts slowly wandered to the small scene back in the Aerowing, "I shouldn't have had my hand there, that was completely uncalled for..." But on the other hand, he hadn't disliked it either.
He came to an abrupt halt and frowned at something that caught his attention. It was a small, out of the way outhouse, but he wondered why it would be out in the middle of no where. He had a hunch as to what lay behind that guise and it had scales. "I don't think it's tourist friendly..."
As he came to a skidding halt at the foot of the Aerowing, Duke came back down the ramp and folded his arms over his chest, the expression on his face telling him there wasn't good news about their ship, "Engine's smashed. I don't think it's gonna fly and I'm wondering if this was some kinda distraction."
Wildwing looked contemplative, pacing back and forth in front of Duke, "It might be. They were probably counting on all of us to be here and probably haven't noticed us yet...and I couldn't find anything but a little outhouse half a mile away..."
"Scan it with the mask?" Duke asked anxiously, partially feeling that in itself was a stupid question since he had a feeling what it was. He watched Wildwing's pacing with a frown, Poor guy seems over-worked.
"I didn't really figure to bother, it seemed a bit suspicious to be sitting out here all on it's own, so I'm sure it's the Raptor. But it may not be wise to go poking around when we're four members short." He explained, rubbing his chin thoughtfully, stopping his pacing and looking up at him with a frown, "But if we go, Dragonnaus may feel the need to relocate and then we'll have lost our one in a million chance..."
Duke tapped a finger to the end of his beak before his features lit up and he snapped his fingers, "Maybe we could put a homing device on it that way, we won't lose 'em!"
The white mallard perked up, his brows arched and a satisfied look on the mask. Clever, I don't think Mallory would have thought of that, he noted to himself, "That may work...is there on the ship?"
With a nod, the smaller drake turned and went back inside, returning with an attachable homing beacon and handing it to Wildwing, who looked it over and nodded in approval. "Good thinking, Duke. Since you're faster on your blades, I want you to attach it, and I'll watch your back. Let's go."
*
Nosedive kicked his feet a little, bored out of his mind as they rode back to the Pond after Phil's latest stunt. He wondered how his big brother and Duke were doing since they hadn't heard from them yet. "Hey, do you think they're waitin' for us at the Pond?" he asked anxiously, fidgeting in his seat as he looked from Tanya to Mallory and back.
"Well, y-you know, probably. Ah, Anaheim's not-not very big." Tanya stutterepenipening her com to check but only getting static on the two drakes' end, and she looked around with worry before turning back to look at the com, "Ah....guys? Um, c-come in?"
The other three looked at her in their own worry before checking their own communicators and coming up dry. Mallory frowned, her brows narrowing, "Yeah, Duke must be a lot of help..."
"Hey, don't diss the Dukester, maybe something happened!"
The red head glared back at him, then turned back as she phased into her battle gear, she turned to Tanya from the steering wheel, "We'll track them down with the homing signal on the Aerowing, since their coms are down." With that said, the rest changed into their battle gear while Mallory drove on, passing the city limits in around an hour.
"How did they end up outside Anaheim?" Dive puzzled, getting up, close and personal with the windshield to look around. It was several minutes before he caught sight of the Aerowing and barked at Mallory to stop the Migrator. When they came to a halt, the four raced out towards the smoking jet. Grin frowned as he placed a large hand on the side, "I am sensing some disturbing energy about..."
Mallory herself cursed loudly and kicked at it, "Yeah, great, where are they?!"
Tanya and Nosedive came back outside, both looking quite unhappy. "They're not inside, and with all this interference, well ah, we won't be able to track them down!" the blonde duck explained, hands on her hips as the teen stepped away from her and looked around.
Dive scratched his head and bent down to look at the ground, not sure whether or not he saw skate tracks in the dirt. Then he looked up and back at the others who all seemed to hear what he was, laser and puck blasts and they sounded like they were close. The four turned on their blades before they raced towahe nhe noise, soon freezing in their tracks when they caught sight of the Raptor before they saw Wildwing and Duke taking covers behind some boulder while firing at the hunter drones.
During the exchange of fire, Duke glanced up to see the four take their own cover and start fire on the drones then he turned and nudged Wildwing, "Hey, the others are here!" With a moment's distraction, Duke yelped in pain when a laser blast cut through his shoulder and he buckled behind the rock, "Damn!"
"Duke!" Wildwing cried in shock, quickly grabbing the thief's arm so he wouldn't fall sideways into the line of fire. He turned his attention back to what he was doing, blasting at the robots with the puck launcher while clamping a hand over Duke's bleeding shoulder. With the added help, the drones finally left in defeat, giving them a chance to group behind the rock and Tanya had the opportunity to check on Duke's shoulder.
The white mallard looked the wound over with concern and looked up at Tanya, his little brother crouching down beside them and checking on his friend, "He'll be all right?"
"Y-Yeah, it's just, ah, a flesh wound."
The ground suddenly started to shake as they all turned to look as the Raptor got airborne to the best of it's limited ability and departed. All of the ducks save Wildwing and Duke looked utterly disappointed, Mallory herself was furious as she pointed an accusing finger at the gray drake, "You had to go and get injured! We could have had them if you weren't such an idiot and paid attention to what the fuck you were doing!"
The one-eyed duck glared at her with his good eye as Tanya patched up his shoulder up, "Don't you do anything other than bitch?" The red-head seemed ready to jump at him but Wildwing stood up and restrained her, "Mallory, calm down! It's okay that the Raptor got away."
Suddenly Mallory stopped dead in her tracks and gave him a dumbfounded look, "W-What?! Wildwing, did you hit your head?!" Tanya and Grin looked at each other as their team captain shook his head before he explained himself, "Duke put a homing device on their ship, so we'll be able to find them anytime, now, I think you need to apologize."
She looked from him to Duke, then back to him before she looked at Duke again, "I don't have to apologize...we still should have taken care of it now..." She folded her arms over her chest before prying herself from Wildwing's grip and stomping back towards the Migrator. Why is he always defending him? she mentally demanded, kicking a rock in her path.
Duke shook his head as Dive helped him to his feet, "She wants my head on a silver platter.." The blond teen perked his brows, keeping close to him, "It's probably that time of the month for her." The group made their way back their vehicles, Tanya checking up on the homing device and found it working. Grin was being his usual quiet self, and the brothers were on either side of Duke, seeming to give him their undivided attention.
He looked from Wildwing to Nosedive, wondering what he was missing. His face felt a little flushed when he remembered Wildwing had his hand on his leg, "..." And soon after he was injured, he was being a little smothered with both of their attention.
*
Nosedive threw himself ungracefully onto the couch and went channel hopping. He had wanted to talk to Duke about something, but the older duck went straight to his room and locked his door. It seemed like it was another lurk-in-the-dark night for their ex-thief. Shaking his head, Dive turned the television off and leaned back into the couch, he didn't understand him.
He jumped up and ran down the hallway before stopping at the corner when he saw Wildwing at Duke's bedroom door. He frowned and tilted his head to the side, it seemed his older brother was talking to Duke through the door which got his to raise an eyebrow. Nosedive decided he'd go over and see what was up, so he rounded the corner and ran up to Wildwing, "Hey, big bro! What's up?"
Wildwing jumped, looking shocked as he turned to him, "Nothing, I was just talking to Duke."
"About?"
"About something you really don't need to worry about."
"So...just chit-chat?"
"Yeah..."
The white mallard watched his little brother take off. When he was sure Dive was out of earshot, he turned back and knocked on Duke's door. "Duke...come out."
There wasn't any response, none recognizable. He frowned and put a hand to the door, he wanted to talk to Duke face to face, he didn't want any strange talking through a door and wondering if you were heard or ignored. After a few minutes of coaxing, Wildwing figured he wasn't being paid attention to and followed after the way his brother went, it was almost time for their game and they had to start getting ready. "I'll catch him afterwards."
