Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
Eve finishes packing her bags, groaning as her lower back begins to ache. “Thank god I don’t have to lug these bags downstairs.”
He glances over, frowning at the clock. “Xander should be here at any moment. He will make sure they get to the jet.” He notices her rubbing her back and walks over to massage it for her. “Your back didn’t bother you until yesterday.”
“I also could still fit in my normal jeans yesterday.” She sighs contently as he hits all the knots. “Now I’m wearing the smaller of the maternity jeans we got the other day. I swear I’m growing 2 inches bigger every day!”
He chuckles, kissing her cheek as the door opens. Xander steps in, grinning and flicking his wrist to make the bags disappear. “Aunt Eve, are you sure you want to go on this flight?”
“I’m going wherever I want before the doctors shove me in my bed for good.” She growls back at him, waving her fist. “So don’t you start with me, pup!”
He lifts his hands in surrender. “Ok! Ok! I just don’t want to hear you complain about jet lag.”
Owen chuckles, winking at him as he steers his now glaring wife towards the door. “Hasn’t anyone told you it is not healthy to argue with a pregnant woman?”
“Apparently not.” Eve growls under her breath as she follows him out.
Shoulders sagging, Eve leans against Owen as they step into the hotel after an uneventful flight. Xander grins back at her, nearly bouncing across the lobby. “Told you to sleep while you could! If you had, you wouldn’t be so tired now!”She narrows her eyes at Owen, barely keeping from grinding her teeth. He curls her arm in his, walking them to the front desk. “Alexander, if I have to tell you again that she was doing some work for me I will make sure you scrub the whole kitchen after our next dinner party.” He smiles at the attendant. “Good evening, Akio. My usual room ready?”
“Of course, Owen san.” He bows to them. “Will you be needing 2 extra rooms as well?”
“No.” His lips twitch up. “Only one for young Mr. Xanatos. This is Evelyn Burnett, my wife.”
Akio’s face pales as he hands over the room keys. Eve grabs the one for their rooms and turns away. “I’ll meet you up there. I’m exhausted.”
“Wait!” Akio’s voice trembles. “Perhaps I can offer you some tea to help you relax first!”
Owen’s eyes narrow at Akio. “Please tell me they did not leave me another surprise.” He nearly growls at the sight of the attendant starting to shake. He glances back and sees Eve has already disappeared. “You had best call up there and have them leave immediately. I am not responsible for what may happen to them if my wife finds them.”
Akio grabs a phone as Owen steps away from the counter, grabbing Xander and hauling him to the elevators with him.
Eve steps into the room, sighing in relief as she drops her jacket on a nearby table. She runs her fingers through her hair, eyes closed. A soft sound catches her attention and she stiffens, eyes flashing open. She follows the sound to the bedroom, eyes narrowing as she sees a young woman wrapped in a blanket rushing around the room to gather her clothes.“Why are you here?” She growls softly. “Your bosses know Owen doesn’t care for prostitutes.”
The woman freezes, stares at her in fear, and lowers herself to the ground, bowing low. “Forgive me. I only do what I am told.”
Eve feels the magic flowing through her as her anger rises. “Get up and get out!” She watches as the woman scrabbles to her feet. “And give your bosses a message.” Flames start to lick Eve’s hands. “IF they try this again, I will not be so forgiving.”
The woman screams, rushing from the room. Owen opens the door just in time to be nearly bowled over as the woman rushes past him. He sighs, stepping into the room and seeing Eve shaking her hands as the flames start to disappear.
“Did you need to frighten her?” He sets his bag down on a low table.
“Yes, I did.” She rolls her shoulders, trying to pull the magic back under control. “Maybe they will finally get the message.”
He tries to take her hands in his but she pulls them away, small flames still dancing around her fingers. “I’m sure they will.” He sighs. “You need to let go now.”
She glares at him and strides towards the bathroom. “I’m trying!” She turns the water on in the sink and douses her hands until the flames disappear.
She closes her eyes, grabs onto the sink and begins to sway. Owen rushes up behind her, lifts her into his arms, and carries her to the bed. “You are too tired, Eve.” He lays her down and pulls a comforter over her. “Rest. I’ll make sure everything stays quiet until morning.”
She reaches out, grabbing his hand. “Please don’t leave.”
“Why would I leave?” He smirks down at her, patting her hand. “I’m going to make a few phone calls and ensure Xander hasn’t done anything stupid before sending him to bed.”
“Ok.” She sighs softly before drifting off.
He watches her closely for several minutes, frowning, before pulling out his phone.
Eve hears the flipping of papers. She tries to snuggle deeper into the covers but the sound nags at something in the back of her mind. Her eyes flutter open, a frown starting as she tries to focus on where she is.Xander’s head lifts, pushing away from the small table where he had been looking through papers. He smiles at her as she slowly sits up. “There you are! Was beginning to wonder if you were going to sleep all day.”
“I feel like a freight train hit me.” She grumbles, noticing she’s still fully clothed in what she wore the night before. “And I apparently didn’t get very far before passing out last night from the look of me.”
“What do you remember?” Xander’s smile widens.
“Not much.” She lowers her head into her hands and sighs. “I remember coming into the room, finding some half naked woman and getting pissed.” She glances up at him. “What did I do?”
“Not much.” He shrugs, chuckling. “Gave her a good scare by way of threat and then passed out cold after. Uncle Owen was afraid to do more than let you sleep it off.”
“Damn it!” She growls and tries to slide off the bed. Her legs nearly buckle and Xander jumps up, grabbing her and leading her to a chair at the table. “That’s not how we had this planned. I was supposed to look quietly into things here and not be noticed!”
“Too late for that.” Xander slides a plate of fruit to her. “Eat up, demon queen.”
“Is that what they are calling me?” She eats the first piece, only to suddenly feel ravenous.
“Something like that.” Xander watches her with amusement. “I prefer ‘Lucifina, princess of darkness’ for you! Has a better ring to it!”
Eve groans. “Please don’t go around calling me that!”
“Don’t worry. I won’t while we’re here.” Xander notices all the fruit is gone and lifts his phone. “Just as I thought. You used up too much energy. I’ll get you more.”
Eve looks at the plate in shock. “Yeah. That might be a good idea. And some water or tea as well.”
“Got it!” Xander winks at her.
“Aunt Eve?” Xander flips through several pages, his frown getting deeper. “I need your enlightenment.”Eve steps out of the bathroom, changed and hair brushed. “What is it?”
“I thought that looking at some of the numbers would help me understand all this more but instead it’s confusing me.” He pushes a small stack over to her as she sits down at the table. “Are the parts processed supposed to be the same number as the parts shipped?”
“Not usually.” She frowns as well and picks up a couple of pages to compare them. “Usually the number differs because quality control will go through and sort out the defects. That should show on another page that has a list of defects if it’s not on the processing pages.”
“That’s what I thought too.” He pours a glass of water. “I didn’t find one.”
Her eyes go hard as she stares at him over the pages. “They better not be sending over defective parts. That could mean lives lost and people hurt.”
“Shit!” Xander nears drops his glass as realization hits him. “We need to tell Uncle Owen right away.”
“Text him and tell him the production numbers are matching exactly with the shipped numbers.” She picks up more pages, glancing at them. “Make sure he knows we can’t find a listing of defective numbers. I don’t want to get too alarmed yet. The paperwork for that might just be missing and we haven’t found it yet.”
“Ok.” Xander grabs his phone, fingers flying over the buttons.
Owen slides his phone back in his pocket as he walks the plant. “Takashi, you know I have always respected our relationship.”“Yes, Owen.” He bows his head slightly to him. “You have always treated me with honor, respect, and kindness.”
“Then why am I being disrespected now?” His voice quiets so those walking by them cannot hear. “I do not have all the numbers, especially the ones for quality control.”
Takashi pales slightly. “We no longer keep the numbers for quality control.”
Owen stops, staring at him for a long moment. “That is an ill-advised procedure to have.” He starts walking again. “Who signed off on that?”
“Our esteemed company president.” He lowers his voice as well, glancing at those walking by them. “Everything is monitored now so I could not tell you.”
Owen glances at the cameras. “Do they have audio?”
“Not yet in this corridor.” Takashi waves at a window, smiling. “Let me show you our new production line.”
Owen lifts a brow, turning towards the window. He quickly notices their backs are to the corridor cameras and there are none yet pointed at them along the production line. “What happens to the defective parts?”
“Everything is on this.” Takashi thumbs a jump drive in his hand. “I have been copying everything since I realized something was wrong. Those that complained about the new procedures quickly disappeared. I listed their names as well.”
“Thank you, Takashi.” He turns so his face is shown on camera now. “I must go back and check on my wife. I am afraid twins is not what we expected and I want to make sure her health is good after such a long flight.” He holds out his hand to him.
Takashi grips in, slipping the jump drive up the sleeve of Owen’s jacket. “If you need anything, call me. I wish you prosperity and happiness in your marriage.”
They bow to each other. Owen holds his hands together, sliding the jump drive unseen into his palm. He smiles as he straightens, Takashi mimicking the smile. “And I wish the same to you, Takashi.” He steps away and walks back down the hall to the main exit.
Eve looks up, hearing the door open to the apartment. Owen steps into the room and leans down, kissing her softly. “Everything ok?”“No.” He pulls a notepad and pen towards him, writing swiftly. “I’m worried about your health.” He slides the notepad to her. “Are you feeling better?”
“So far so good. Just tired.” She reads ‘They did away with quality control. I have been given a jump drive with emails and paper trail. We need to leave very soon.’ “Xander has been babying me all day.”
“Where is Xander?” Owen glances at his watch. “We should be getting ready for dinner.”
Eve chuckles and points towards their bedroom. “He passed out a couple of hours ago.” She picks up the pen and writes ‘How soon do you want to leave?’
“He jokes about jet lag but he suffers it too.” He picks up the pen and replies ‘Tomorrow. Xander and I have to appear at a breakfast meeting and pretend everything is fine. I will make sure everything is clear for us to leave as soon as the breakfast is over.’
She nods and stands. “I’ll get him up. I’m sure he’ll be ravenous like always.”
Eve leans close as she watches the waiters around them scurry about. “You know this is beginning to become a habit.”“What is?” Owen lifts a brow and shakes his head as Xander tries to steal his wine. “Xander, behave yourself a little while longer.”
“Going somewhere and only staying long enough to get secret information. Then rushing off in hopes no one catches us.” Her lips twitch up. “You really know how to keep a girl on her toes.”
He snorts softly. “Not exactly what I had planned, My Dear.”
“I know.” She reaches out and touches his hand lightly. “Nothing really has.”
Xander frowns, noticing a few patrons glancing their way. “Are we being watched?”
“Of course.” Eve lifts a glass to her lips. “Did you expect less?”
“So I should ward our rooms tonight?” Xander notices the way she hides her lips as she speaks.
“That should be a given, Xander.” Owen takes a bite. “You should get in the habit every time you go somewhere new.”
“I didn’t think about it.” Xander’s face colors slightly. “Sorry.”
“You shouldn’t think about it, pup.” Eve smiles warmly. “You’ve only been on one business trip before now. This is a learning experience for you.”
“Ok.” He ducks his head slightly. “Just let me know what I need to do.”
“Nothing for now.” Owen taps at his phone. “David is aware of what is going on and will be sending help shortly. Until then, we behave as if we are enjoying ourselves.”
