Chapter 9: Darkstar
It was evening when Star and Marco arrived home. When Marco’s mom told them to go wash up for dinner, Star grabbed Marco by the wrist and practically hauled him up the stairs. But instead of leading him to the bathroom, she shoved him into his bedroom, slammed the door behind them, nearly hurled Marco onto the bed, and leaped on top of him.
“Tell me everything!” she whisper-shouted manically. “Was it amazing? How many times did you do it? Do you have any butt-hickeys? Because I sure do!”
Marco, initially thrown but now getting caught up in Star’s excitement, replied in a low voice, “Not on my butt, but check out this bad boy.” He pulled his collar down to reveal a roughly circular red mark on his neck.
“Oooh, Marco, that’s a good one!” Then, rolling off of him so that she could elbow him in the ribs, she added, “Good thing we’ve seen Jackie in direct sunlight, know what I mean?”
Marco grinned. “I don’t have to ask if it was awesome for you. I could hear the screaming!”
Star blushed, giggling like a deranged schoolgirl. “I guess I’ve never been good at being quiet.”
Marco’s eyes suddenly widened. “Oh my gosh, Star—we did the deed! Do you know what that means?”
“Um, it means we had sex. Wasn’t I the one who explained that to you?”
“No, what I mean is…We did it! Project Wingman is a total success!”
Star’s eyes somehow grew even bigger than they already were.
“Ohmigosh!” she squeaked. “We really did it!”
“Up high, wingman!” Marco shouted, raising his fist in the air.
“Way high!” Star cried, bumping fists and cawing with Marco.
“Kids?” Marco’s mother called from downstairs. “Is everything all right up there?”
Both teens simultaneously slapped a hand over their mouth. Then Marco opened his fingers.
“Everything’s fine! Sorry, Mom!”
Star threw a grin at Marco, then hurried off to shower.
***
Later, after the adults went to bed, Marco quietly went up to Star’s room, pillow and blanket in hand.
“You know,” Star said in a low voice as Marco lay down next to her, “you don’t really need to sneak around. Your parents know you’ve been sleeping in my bed.”
“Yeah, but somehow, it seems more disrespectful to acknowledge that they know than to pretend that I’m doing it behind their backs. Is that weird?”
“Yes,” Star replied. “But if I had a big problem with weird, we wouldn’t be best friends.”
Embracing the role reversal, Marco said, “Aw, Star. Hugs!” and threw his arms around her. They both giggled.
When they let go of each other, Star yawned. “Oh, man, having the most awesome day ever makes you sleepy.”
Marco yawned too. “Sure does.”
He reached over and turned off the light as Star whistled for the laser puppies, who bounded onto the bed and quickly settled down all around the two reclining teens.
For several moments, there was silence.
“Star?” Marco whispered.
“Yeah?”
“We made our dreams come true today. If we can do that…what can’t we do?”
Putting her back snugly against Marco’s front, Star replied, “I hope we never find out. G’night, wingman.”
“G’night, wingman.”
***
Star smiled as she looked across the room, which was like a blend of the Chillaximus Spa and her own bedroom. In the opposite doorway, backlit by hazy white light, stood a delightfully familiar figure, clad in a white spa robe.
“Hey, Oskar,” she said seductively.
“Hey,” he replied, his tone equally flirtatious as he approached her. “I brought you something.”
“Oh, yeah?” Star teased. “What is it?”
“I’ll give you a hint,” Oskar said, taking Star’s hand and putting it inside his robe. “It fits you just right.”
Star wrapped her hand around her lover’s hard member and grinned. “Maybe I should try it on, just to be sure.”
“You might want to look at it first,” Oskar replied. “Make sure it’s your style.”
Star woke up. The laser puppies were still snoozing all around her. The only thing different was that now her front was against Marco’s back instead of the other way around. And…what was that warm thing in her hand?
She stifled a scream as she realized that her hand was inside Marco’s pajama bottoms, gripping her bestie’s hard penis.
Star jerked her hand away like Marco’s member was on fire. Then she froze, listening to Marco’s breathing and hoping to every god of every dimension that he was asleep. Thankfully, his slow, rhythmic breathing indicated that he was.
It’s okay, she thought. I didn’t do it on purpose. It was just because of that dream.
Carefully, she put her arm around Marco. It had turned into another frigid night, and it was good to have her bestie’s familiar warmth. Not to mention that Marco was only under one blanket and would probably need her body heat to avoid freezing.
And, then, as if of its own volition, her hand began to slide back down toward Marco’s crotch.
No! she thought, grabbing her arm by the wrist. What’s wrong with you?
There’s nothing wrong with me, she replied to herself. Marco’s the one lying there right next to me with a big ol’ hardon. But noooo, I’m not allowed to touch it, because Marco has to be a good boy and follow the rules all the freaking time.
Wait a minute, she thought. Why am I mad at Marco, when I’m the one creeping on him? Oh, no—is this what happens to Mewman girls after they have sex for the first time? Because that would explain some things about my mothe- Aaaagh, why do I keep thinking about my parents’ stupid sex life?
Whatever was happening, it was clear that Star couldn’t trust herself to be close to Marco right now. But she couldn’t kick him out of her bed; what excuse would she give him? Because the truth—”Sorry, Marco, I need you to go back to the couch downstairs because I’m afraid I might molest you”—wasn’t going to cut it.
Finally, she thought of a solution. One at a time, she picked up the laser puppies that were sleeping on the opposite side of her from Marco and put them between her body and his.
“Harvey, Barker, Eubanks,” she whispered, “just settle down right here. Isn’t that nice and comfy?”
The puppies seemed to think so, because they all laid their heads down and went back to sleep.
It took Star a good while to do the same.
***
When Marco awoke, Star was still fast asleep. He could hear rain pouring down outside, as the forecast had predicted.
Hungry but not wanting to disturb Star, Marco slipped out of bed and went downstairs to have breakfast with his parents and grandfather. When he came back upstairs later to get ready for the day, he found Star in their bathroom, fixing her hair and frowning slightly at her image in the mirror.
“Morning, Star,” Marco said. Then, noticing that her face had a peculiar sheen, he continued, “You look...different. You using some kind of new skin product?”
“Something like that,” Star said neutrally.
“So, you ready for our rainy-day bad-monster-movie marathon?” the boy asked, excited.
“Whatever,” Star replied flatly.
***
Huh? Star thought. That wasn’t what I was going to say.
She tried to tell Marco that she was looking forward to their movie binge with Oskar and Jackie, especially because Earth people’s ideas about monsters were so often hilarious. But the words wouldn’t come out of her mouth. Instead, she just kept looking sullenly at herself in the mirror and fussing with her hair.
Looking closely, Star could see something different about her face: a sort of gloss, like there were a layer of something not quite transparent over her skin.
She tried to reach up and touch her cheek, but she could not will her hand to rise.
Oh my gosh! she thought. That’s...that’s not me in the mirror!
Very subtly, and with the tiniest smile, the girl in the mirror shook her head.
I’m trapped, Star realized. I’m trapped in my own body! Let me out!
Mirror-Star’s smile widened as she shook her head again.
Let me out! Star cried. Let me out let me out LET ME OUT!
***
“Well, that’s...an interesting choice of outfit,” Marco said as he stood in Star’s bedroom, looking at the girl in her skull-emblazoned belly shirt, leather skirt, fishnet stockings, and goblin-bone earrings. “Especially for a movie marathon.”
“Do you really want to sit around all day,” Star replied, “watching dumb movies because they’re dumb? Let’s do something that’s actually fun! Did I ever tell you about the Six-Eyed Warthog? Me and Tom used to go there all the time.”
Marco wasn’t sure what to make of this. The outfit wasn’t totally outside the realm of Star-possibility, but he couldn’t remember the last time she had spoken fondly about anything associated with her demonic ex.
“But...I thought you were looking forward to the whole movie thing. And after yesterday, I figured it would be cool for the four of us to, you know, just chill out together.”
Star rolled her eyes and exhaled with exasperation. “You figure a lot of things, Marco.”
Thoroughly confused, Marco came closer and looked Star in the eye.
“Star, did I...do something wrong?”
“Ugh,” she replied, “so many things.”
Then, Star’s look of disgust faded, and a gleam came into her eye as though she had suddenly discovered an opportunity. She took hold of his wrists and put his hands on her shoulders.
“But I know how you can make it up to me,” she said with a wicked half-smile. Then she began to move Marco’s hands slowly downward over her body.
“Whoa!” Marco cried, pulling his hands away. “Star, why are you acting so weird?”
“Why are you being so boring?” the girl shouted. “C’mon, how about we go down to the Underworld, beat up some skin demons? It’ll be great!”
“Look, I know you love fighting monsters, but going to the Underworld to pick fights with them...I mean, that’s not really your style.”
“You just don’t get me,” Star replied angrily. “You never have.”
“I thought I did,” Marco said, his mouth dry. “I thought that was part of why we were besties.”
“Marco, you were the first kid I met when I came to Earth. If it had been somebody else, I’d be besties with them now.”
***
Stop it! Star shouted in silence from inside her own head. Stop saying those terrible things to Marco!
She felt a strange sensation: a feeling of weakness that seemed to spread through her being.
What’s happening to me?
***
“Look,” Marco said, “Jackie and Oskar are going to be here soon. I’m gonna go downstairs and make nachos. If you decide you want to come join us, we’ll be there.”
“Whatever,” Star growled. “Just get out of my room.”
“Fine.”
He went to the door. Just as he opened it, Star spoke.
“And Marco?”
“Yeah?”
“Your nachos aren’t really that great.”
***
You bitch! Star screamed. Why are you so mean to him? I hate you! I HATE YOU!
She was filled with rage, and yet, as she watched Marco slam the door behind him, she felt even more of her strength leaving her.
Oh, no, she thought. I’m...fading away.
***
Angrily, Marco went downstairs to the kitchen and started opening cabinets, getting out the necessary ingredients for his special nacho recipe. He was going to try to have a nice time with Jackie and Oskar, even if Star was being...whatever she was being.
Grandpa Rogelio came into the kitchen. “Good morning, Marco. Your parents are allowing me to prepare a special dinner for us all this evening—my famous Tripe Surprise—so I have come to see what ingredients I will need to purchase. Besides the tripa, of course.”
“Morning, grandpa,” Marco mumbled.
Rogelio looked at him with concern. “You seem upset, my boy.”
“It’s...I don’t know. Star’s acting...weird today.”
“You chicos americanos,” Rogelio replied. “You so often use ‘weird’ in place of the word you really mean.”
“Okay,” Marco confessed. “She’s being a real pain in the ass. And...hurtful.”
“I see. Have you had a disagreement?”
“I...I didn’t think so.”
Marco sighed. “Maybe I should just leave her alone,” he said sullenly. “Focus on the, the pasión, instead. I mean, isn’t that more important, anyway?”
Rogelio put a hand on Marco’s shoulder.
“My boy,” he said, “young love is a wonderful thing. But the pasión...she die.”
“Huh?”
“Not quickly, like the slaughtered pig, whose slit throat sprays blood like a lawn sprinkler-”
“Aw, jeez, Grampa!” Marco interjected, wincing.
“-but slowly,” Rogelio continued, “like the pig with the chronic atherosclerosis.”
Then, looking Marco in the eye, he said, “But the friendship between true amigos, like you and Star...this can last your entire life.”
Marco looked at his grandfather, not sure what to make of his words.
“But such friendship cannot be taken for granted, Marco. It requires effort—and faith.”
Marco stood still. “Faith…” he repeated.
Then, quickly, he said, “Thanks, Grandpa,” and headed back upstairs.
***
Marco didn’t even knock. He just threw the door open and strode in.
Star was standing in front of her magic mirror, talking to someone. And as she spun around to see who had just walked in on her, Marco could see the image in the mirror: Tom, looking pleased with himself.
“Get out of here, Marco!” Star shouted.
“Shut up,” the boy growled, making Star’s eyebrows rise in surprise. “I’m on to you now. Whoever you are, you’re not Star.”
“Oh,” Tom said over Star’s shoulder, “she’s still Star—just with a few improvements. I’m calling her…Darkstar.”
“You,” Marco spat as he turned toward Tom’s image in the mirror. “I should have guessed you were behind this!”
“Yeah, maybe you should have,” the demon replied smugly. “But not everyone can be a genius.”
Marco had heard enough. He lunged forward and grabbed Darkstar by the collar.
“You look like her,” Marco breathed angrily, “and you even smell like her. Which means you must be possessing her body.” Pulling her face up to his, Marco looked into her blue eyes and shouted, “Star, are you in there?”
***
Marco! Star cried silently. Marco, I’m here!
***
Darkstar head-butted Marco, making him stumble back. The boy shook his head to clear it and raised his fists.
“Uh-uh-uh,” Darkstar said, wagging a finger. “You hurt me, you hurt your little Star, too.”
“I’m still gonna make you let her go,” Marco growled.
“What’re you going to do, spank me ‘til I surrender?”
With amazing speed, Marco threw himself at her and tackled her face-down onto the bed. She tried to elbow him in the ribs, but Marco grabbed her arm and used it to pin her face-down across his lap—a variation on a move Jackie had taught him.
“Your idea, not mine!” Marco shouted as he began spanking her as hard as he could. Darkstar began howling in pain.
***
Yeah! Star cheered. Way to go, Marco! Spank her scrawny ass! Oh, wait, that’s my ass. Um, spank her perfect ass!
***
“Ow! OW!” Darkstar cried. “That really hurts! Do Earth people actually do this for FUN?”
“If you don’t like it, get out of my friend’s body!” Marco growled.
Just then, Jackie’s voice called from downstairs. “Hey, Marco?”
Marco raised his head, and Darkstar used his momentary distraction to jab an elbow into his side, making him release her. She rolled onto the floor, stood up rapidly, and pulled out her dimensional scissors—just as Jackie and Oskar appeared in the doorway.
“No!” Marco shouted, grabbing for Darkstar as she slashed open a portal. But he was too slow, and she escaped through the portal and closed it behind her.
“What the hell?” Jackie exclaimed.
“Where did Star just go?” Oskar asked.
“Right here, Overbite,” Tom replied through the mirror—now with Darkstar standing next to him.
“Tom’s got her possessed by some kind of evil demon thingy,” Marco growled.
“Star’s going to be staying down here with me from now on,” Tom said confidently. “And unless you’re up for fighting an entire army of demons, I’d suggest that you not come after her. Oh,” he added, looking pointedly at Marco, “and don’t try to contact Star’s family on Mewni. I’ve got people in the royal palace who will tell me if you do. And then…well, you can only imagine what a demon army could do to that school of yours. And everyone in it.
“Of course, you’ve never been the sharpest pencil in the box, and I’m willing to bet your friends aren’t, either. So I’m hoping that you’ll try to come after Star anyway. ‘Cause that would be fun.”
Oskar strode up to the mirror. For the first time ever, Marco saw a look of anger on the boy’s face.
“Then I guess we’ll see you in Hell,” Oskar said.
As Tom’s image vanished from the mirror, Marco looked at Oskar in awe. Jackie did the same.
“What?” Oskar asked innocently. “That’s where we’ll have to go to get her back, right?”
