Kingdom of War 9
Redemption for a Princess
Like running water the Dai Li Agents flooded into the room, all of them surrounding the Bounty Hunter from a safe perimeter. They knew of June’s ability & fighting prowess, but still, they were some of the finest Earthbenders ever brought together…and she had no bending ability at all.
“I must say, I do find it flattering that you would come after me.” Long Feng commented. “Foolish…but flattering.”
“With a bounty as high as the one on your head, I just couldn’t resist.” June replied, deep in her fighting stance.
“Indeed.” Feng agreed. “However, I’m going to offer you a more lucrative and far less painful alternative…join me.” June’s eyebrow ascended slightly as she continued to listen. “Why settle for mere coins in a pocket, when I can offer you royal treasures once I rule the Earth Kingdom fully. All you have to do is take a mission for me; hunt down and destroy the Avatar & the Fire Lord!” Feng turned away for a moment as he begun to stroll around her. “A tempting offer, you’d have to admit.”
“Yes…it is tempting.” June agreed, appearing to be mulling it over. “But honestly…I’ll pass.” Feng turned back to the Bounty Hunter, surprised by her answer. “Oh don’t look so shocked, there are two reasons I can’t take your offer. One, though you do have Omashu under your thumb, you have a long way to go before conquering the entire Kingdom. And two…though I’m not one to take sides without monetary persuasion…only a fool bets against the Avatar. And me…I’m gambling he takes you down before you even set foot in Ba Sing Se.”
June’s long winded denial only served to anger the would-be-tyrant. “You do realize that by rejecting my offer, you’ve guaranteed that you’ll never leave this room.”
Surprisingly, June smirked in response. “And you should’ve realized that in all the times you’ve known me…I’ve never done a job alone.”
As those words left her lips, the room began to tremble. Softly at first, but soon it increased violently to the point where the occupants could barely stand on their feet. The Earthbenders in the room quickly looked around to see if any of their teammates were responsible for the impromptu earthquake, but they would learn the source of the sudden tremors as it busted through the door & the wall to enter the room; Nyla, June’s Shirshu.
Though its power caused the room to shake, it was surprisingly graceful as it sped over to its master. Equaling her companion’s quickness, June hopped up and mounted it as they dashed for the window. With a leap of faith, they crashed through the glass and successfully made their escape, right before a densely thick block of stone rose over the window. The Dai Li were too late to stop her, and Long Feng wasn’t happy.
“I train you to be the most excellent warriors in the world, and you let a Bounty Hunter with NO BENDING ABILITIES break into my room!”
Instantly, every Dai Li in the room dropped to one knee and lowered their head, the shame they’re feeling only overpowered by the fear they had over the potential consequences they could face for failing their master. Luckily for them, he was in a benevolent mood.
“All of you, out of my sight!” He demanded. And as his soldiers followed orders, he called out to one. “Except you, Tsung…”
The second-in-command stopped in his tracks, before turning and walking towards his Master as the others left. He stopped right in front of Feng before dropping to one knee in respect.
“Though this minor annoyance will prove to be nothing against me in the long run, I don’t want to take any chances.” Feng stated. “Contact Kyoko, I want the plan to move into effect now.”
As Long Feng spoke that name, several Dai Li who were still in the room gasped in shock. Tsung held his breath, but his clenched fist was trembling almost uncontrollably. Clearly the name struck a cord with him. “But…sir! I don’t believe Kyoko needs to be—!”
“Tsung, my good night’s sleep was just interrupted.” Feng interrupted coldly. “And right now I am not in a pleasant mood…so choose your next words wisely.”
Though he hated the idea of Kyoko being brought in, Tsung wasn’t stupid enough to anger Feng. “As you wish…Master Feng.”
And with that, Tsung stood up, turned on his heels and marched out of the room obediently. His face showed intense anger though; even under his conical hat, you could see he was livid over Feng’s decision.
It rumbled over the dry terrain, causing the area to tremble under its might. It’s been through the land before; in its earlier life it was used to try to pierce the outer wall of Ba Sing Se, a task at which it failed. Now, it was used as a gigantic one-vehicle convoy, transporting royalty from the Fire Nation, and their guests, to a very important location, to help one of the their own.
Yes, the hydraulic drill was fully-functional, sans its hydraulic mechanism.
As the sun was nearing the horizon, the Colossus, aptly named by the reigning Fire Lord, rolled along the ground, most of its passengers inside of their quarters, except two. Sokka & Zuko stood on deck of the traveling tank, both looking out onto the landscape as it slowly passed them by. They remained silent for several minutes, enjoying the peace that came along with it. That is, until Sokka broke that peace.
“Seriously, can’t we strap rockets to this thing?”
“I told you, this is as fast as it can go.” Zuko said.
“We couldn’t take one of your War Balloons, or something that doesn’t move like a snail?” Sokka asked.
“We’re not taking it for speed; we’re taking it for protection.” Zuko explained. “Riding in this, we can withstand an attack from over 50 Earthbenders.”
“Huh…” And once again, it went back to silence, until Sokka spoke up again. “Hey, you even notice…”
“No offense Sokka, but I’m not really in the mood for jokes.” Zuko told him.
“Yeah…OK…” Sokka replied. He could tell his mind was still on his sister, and whether it was the right decision to bring her along. “So, how’s she doing downstairs?”
“She’s been sitting in her room for the entire trip.” Zuko answered. “Ty Lee’s down there now, seeing if she’s OK.”
And she was. Several floors below, Ty Lee walked through a hall carrying a tray of gourmet delight. As she neared the end of the hall, she turned and stood in front of one door, took a deep breath, exhaled, and opened the door. Inside the room was a decorated room on par with royal standards. But in the center of the room was someone who couldn’t care less about the décor…Azula.
“I brought you a late lunch.” Ty Lee said, walking over to her. “You slept pass noon and I didn’t want to wake you.” She kneeled down in front of her friend, joining her at eye level. “It’s Komodo Chicken & rice, your favorite. I know you want certain seasonings on the chicken, but the chef wasn’t able to find—!”
“It’s OK, Ty Lee…” Azula interrupted with sincerity in her voice. Ty Lee smiled, and was about to leave her friend to her solitude when she felt Azula grasp her wrist. “Ty Lee…”
Immediately, she stayed seated and turned to her friend. “What is it?”
It took a moment for the Fire Nation Princess to conjure the words, but she soon spoke. “Back…back at the prison…you dived in front of me. You…you held me when I tried to kill Zuko. You risked your life…why?”
Surprisingly to Azula, it was an easy question for her friend to answer. “Because you would’ve done the same for me.” Ty Lee told her. “You’re my friend, and you’ve always been there for me, even back when we were kids. I still remember the day that mean, big girl stole my doll while we were playing…and you held her head under the royal fountain for 2 minutes until she begged for my forgiveness. You’ve…always looked out for me.”
After hearing such heartfelt words from her friend, Azula felt herself breaking down again. She couldn’t believe after what she did to Ty Lee, locking her up for her betrayal at Boiling Rock and disregarding their friendship, she was still here helping her. Still at her side.
The tears began to stream down her cheeks. “I don’t…I DON’T DESERVE A FRIEND LIKE YOU!!!”
She leaned forward, but was immediately caught by Ty Lee, who put Azula’s head on her shoulder as she embraced her. “Yes you do, Azula.” She told her calmly. “You’re a good friend, and we’re gonna help you get better again.”
As she held her friend, out of the corner of her eye, Ty Lee spotted a figure standing in the shadows, just out of sight. She could tell who it was even by the sight of the silhouette…Mai. It was clear she was keeping an eye on the two, for Ty Lee’s sake. Though the exuberant Kyoshi Warrior welcomed Azula back with open arms, Mai was more than hesitant to do so. Ty Lee even remembered what Mai said to Azula as they boarded this ship, “I’m no longer afraid of you…and that makes me dangerous.”
Suddenly, Mai’s silhouette disappeared into the darkness, and was replaced by the image of Jet, who stood in the doorway. “Azula, Ty Lee…we’re here…”
5 Minutes Later…
The sky gave off an orange hue as the team ventured through Ba Sing Se. Several Fire Nation & Earth Kingdom guards accompanied them as they traversed towards the Jasmine Dragon, and much needed help. Ty Lee & Jet kept huddled around Azula, who continuously held her head down in shame. Zuko & Sokka walked at the front, with Mai & Suki at their sides. They could hear the whispers coming from onlookers, citizens of Ba Sing Se. They’ve heard of Long Feng’s plan to conquer all of the Earth Kingdom, but they never thought it would grow so big as to gain the attention of the Fire Lord, much less friends of the Avatar.
They walked up the staircase and passed by the small marble fountain, but stopped as the doors to the Tea Shop swung open. And out from inside stepped the very man Zuko journeyed her to see for his sister’s sake, their Uncle Iroh.
“I am just going to check the garden!” Iroh yelled back into the Shop. “I won’t take long, just a…moment…”
The rest of his words trailed off as he laid eyes on those in front of him. Zuko was the first to step forward. “Uncle, I know this visit is sudden, but…”
“Nonsense!” Iroh told him. “Any visit from my nephew is more than a welcome one! How go things in the Fire Nation. I know you have heard about Long Feng…”
“That’s why we’re here, Uncle.” Zuko said. “We’re going to stop him…but first, we need your help. Or…she needs your help.”
Iroh mouthed the word ‘she’, but quickly gained his answer as to the identity as the crowd split to the side, and both Ty Lee & Jet helped Azula to the staircase where Iroh stood. The Dragon of the West was understandably surprised to see his niece before him. But what shocked him more was the action she took. Dropping down to one knee, she avoided direct eye contact as the tears flowed again.
“Uncle…I know you can never forgive me for what I’ve done.” She stated, voice cracking. “I sided with my father as he sought to conquer the world, I’ve caused so much destruction, I’ve betrayed so many! I…I know you can never forgive me, but I’m so sorry. I’M JUST SO—!”
She didn’t get the chance to finished, as she felt her uncle’s strong arms embrace her tightly. He didn’t say a word, he just hugged her. And it conflicted with her. “Why? Why can you…forgive me? How can you—?”
“Azula…” The Fire Princess glanced up at her older brother, who was grinning. “Just enjoy the hug, trust me.”
10 Minutes Later…
It was dimly lit in the back room of the Jasmine Dragon, but the illumination was enough for Azula & Iroh to see the Pai Sho board for their match, which was a dead heat. Both had maneuvered their pieces around the board with the strategy of a war general, at times playing cautiously, and at other times taking risks, though being sure not to expose their own weaknesses. Ty Lee sat at the side, watching, as Uncle and Niece continued with their match.
Azula placed her finger on a round tile with the image of a rose on it, and moved it forward. “Ah, brilliant maneuver.” Iroh complimented. “You have me trapped, I might have to sacrifice a piece.”
“Uncle…I-I don’t understand.” Azula said, ready to cry again. “I mean, you can just hug me, and invite me to play this game when…how can I…how can I make amends for…?”
“If you really want to make amends for me, you can stop crying.” Iroh told her. “A beautiful strong young woman should never shed tears like you have been doing.” Azula immediately forced herself from crying as her uncle continued. “I don’t blame you for what you’ve done. In truth, I know why your actions were taken. It is never easy for a young girl to grow up without a motherly presence around, and your father was less than the caring type. So to adapt, your personality became more like his. And he used that, to turn you into the heir of the Fire Nation he wanted you to be, instead of the daughter he should’ve let you become.”
Azula nodded her head in agreement as her uncle continued. “When you were young, you showed such youthful excitement and energy. You use to run around and play all day as your mother watched over you. In fact, I even began to believe you would grow up to be just like your friend over there.”
Iroh pointed over to Ty Lee, and both young women let out a small gasp. “You mean, Ty Lee?” Azula asked. The very thought of it was unusual to say the least. The Fire Princess running & flipping around, discussing auras and joyfulness…it wasn’t really something she could picture, and Iroh agreed.
“Granted, you wouldn’t have her beliefs on others…” He continued. “…But you would have her optimistic outlook, and her truthful spirit. In short, the only way to find redemption is to be truthful to you. You cannot live your life the way you did months ago…you felt the outcome of it firsthand.”
Azula nodded in agreement; her breakdown was evident of it. “But…how do I live my life, Uncle?”
Iroh lifted his head and stared into the eyes of his niece. “Only you must discover that answer. You must do what you feel is right, what brings joy to you and keeps you going. You must not let anyone else tell you how to live or what is right, it is up to you to discover that for yourself.”
Meanwhile, Sokka & Zuko sat outside in the main serving area along with Mai, Jet & Suki, all at one table. Suki & Mai quietly sipped their order of Tea, while Sokka went over the notes he took from the Prison. Zuko just sat with his gaze pointed at the door, same as Jet.
“How do you think it’s going in there?” Suki asked.
“I don’t know.” Zuko answered. “But if anyone can get through to her, it’s Uncle. He just…has a way of helping you through your problems, and setting you straight.”
“So you mean to say that he’s the Dragon Psychiatrist of the West.” Sokka quipped.
Zuko let off a small chuckle. “Yeah, I guess you could say that.”
Both of them shared a laugh over Sokka’s joke as a Waitress calmly approached their table. “Here’s your water, sir.”
It was Zuko’s order, since he never fully developed a taste for Tea. Unfortunately, the Fire Lord couldn’t guess where his order would eventually land…in his lap. “What the—AAAGGHHH!!!”
As the cold liquid hit his leg, he jumped up to his feet. His first instinct was to berate the Waitress for the incident, but as he made eye contact with her, he realized she had a very valid reason for her actions…Jin was his server.
“Hello…Lee.”
“Uh, heh…hey Jin.” Zuko uttered. “It’s…been a while…”
“Yes, it has.” She agreed. “So long that it appears YOU’VE become a Fire Lord and Lied to me!”
Anger in her eyes, she slammed the serving tray down on the table and stormed off towards the back of the store. All eyes now were on Zuko, as he sat back in his chair and held his head in his hands. “I did NOT expect that today…”
“I think it’s safe to say no one did.” Jet said. “Who is she, anyway?”
“It’s complicated.” Zuko told him.
“She had a crush on Zuko while he was in exile and hiding out in Ba Sing Se.” Mai explained.
Zuko just groaned, hating how Mai summed it up into one sentence. “I need to go talk to her.” He said, standing up again.
“I’ll go with you.” Mai said, also rising from her seat.
The couple both weaved around the tables scattered through the shop as they made their way to the back. Passing the payment counter, Zuko opened a wooden door to enter the stock room, where Jin was busy putting up dishes from the shop…with more force than usual.
Zuko slowly walked in, with Mai behind him. “Look Jin, I can explain…”
“How could you not tell me?” Jin barked, interrupting him. “I had to find out from the posters that were put up a year ago about your coronation! What else have you lied to me about? Is Lee even your real name!?”
She looked at him, and only grew angrier as he slowly shook his head. “No…my real name is Zuko.”
“AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!” She let out a frustrated scream before turning away from the two, leaving Zuko feeling worse.
“Nice one, ZuZu.” Mai commented.
“I have absolutely no skill making people feel better.” Zuko added.
“Then perhaps I can give it a shot.”
Mai & Zuko turned around to see Azula standing there, with a completely changed look. She was decked out in traditional Earth Kingdom clothing, a welcome change from her prison attire, and she even wore a green, straw-woven kasa on her head. Her demeanor had changed as well, as she wore a smile across her face. One that Zuko has seen before.
“Wait, who’re you?” Jin asked.
“My name is Azula, and I understand all about my brother Zuko.” She explained, before turning to her brother. “ZuZu, could you excuse us? This is girl talk.”
“But…but…” Zuko had no choice in the matter though, as Azula took the initiative and led both him & Mai out of the room before closing the door after them. They both wore looks of confusion as Suki, Sokka & Jet approached them.
“Did I just see Azula going in there, and pushing you two out?” Jet asked.
Zuko was still in disbelief. “She…wanted to talk to Jin alone.”
“I don’t know if that was the right decision.” Sokka stated.
“Of course it was, silly!” Ty Lee appeared out from the back room. “With what your uncle told her Zuko, I think she’s gonna be all better!”
“And…just what did Zuko’s uncle tell Azula, Ty Lee?” Mai inquired.
A joyous grin overcame Ty Lee’s face as she was about to answer. “He told her that she should be more like me!”
And in grand unison, total shock overwhelmed the other 5. Azula; like Ty Lee? The mere idea of it was unfathomable. But it did explain the smile that was on her face as she entered the room, and it made Mai shiver with dread. It was enough for her to deal with one Ty Lee…two might drive her to madness. Before anything could be said though, the door to the stock room swung open.
“And we’re done.”
Azula stepped out of the room with a confident grin, followed by Jin.
Zuko became even more worried. “Wait, you’re done? What did you say to her?”
“Nothing important.” Azula answered. “But she forgives you and understands completely.”
“I really do, Zuko.” Jin agreed. “And…I hope we can see each other soon…”
There was a hint of her blushing as she dashed off to take more orders, and it only served to confuse Zuko further about what Azula said to her. “Well, we can’t hang around here forever.” Azula announced. “Long Feng’s gotta be stopped!”
She now exhibited a take charge attitude as she marched towards the exit of the Jasmine Dragon. The rest of the group followed after her, with no one, save for Ty Lee, having a clue what was going on with the Fire Princess.
“OK, is it an insult to say that I’m even more afraid of your sister now?” Sokka asked Zuko.
“Normally, I’d say yes.” Zuko replied. “But right now, I’m feeling the same way you do.”
The sun was now almost completely lost over the horizon as the sky darkened. Usually it would make travel a major hindrance for those trekking across the Earth Kingdom. But the Colossus was built to handle anything that came in its way, so it kept rolling along the terrain as the group, sans Ty Lee at the moment, gathered together on the top deck. They sat down in a circle, and all eyes turned to Azula as she began to speak.
“I know what you all have been wondering…” She began. “What exactly did my Uncle tell me while we were in the Tea Shop? Well, besides letting me beat him in a game of Pai Sho…he told me that I need to take control of my life. He said that my father played a major role in turning me into the monster I was…and he was right. Back then, I felt the Fire Nation was destined to rule the world, and I just wanted to be with my Father as he sat on the throne. But now…I need to decide what’s best for me, and at this moment, it’s helping put that scum Long Feng back where he belongs, behind bars.”
She stopped and took a deep breath, before exhaling and continuing. “Also, Uncle Iroh said I could take some tips from Ty Lee as to find my true me. Don’t worry, I have no plans on flipping around and talking about peoples’ auras. But…I will try to be more open with myself…and with all of you.” She took another deep breath, and let it out before speaking again. “So…Zuko, Mai; how’s the relationship going?”
“Huh?” The couple was put-off by that question. “It’s…going good.” Zuko answered. “We’re spending a lot more time together.”
“Hmm, that’s great.” Azula commented. “So, how are things in bed?”
“Well, they are—WHAT!?!?!?” The question blindsided Zuko, and clearly upset him. “You can’t ask that, Azula!”
“What’s the problem?” Azula responded. “It’s a genuine question. I just would like to know if every aspect of your relationship is perfect.”
“Don’t you think it’s kinda inappropriate!?” Zuko told her.
“No, not really.” Azula answered calmly. “If it helps, things aren’t perfect for Jet and I in the bedroom, either.”
Now it was Jet’s turned to be shocked. “Wait…what!?”
“Aw don’t worry honey.” Azula assured him. “You just need a few improvements, that’s all.”
The shock still hadn’t worn off the former freedom fighter. “I…need improvements?”
“Azula, this is not right.” Zuko said, shaking his head.
His sister just played it off. “Oh stop being so sensitive, ZuZu. Now Mai, what do you think he can do to spark up the bedroom more?”
“She’s not gonna answer that!” Zuko yelled.
“Actually…”
The Fire Lord’s jaw then promptly dropped to the ground as he heard his beau answering. “He does let me be on top while in bed. And that’s fine with me, but…”
“Sometimes you just wish he’d take control?” Azula finished, to which Mai nodded her head. “Yeah, ZuZu’s always had problems taking the initiative.”
Zuko was now wrapped in embarrassment, as he hung his head low. “What did I do to deserve this?”
Lost in the ‘Fiery’ pillow talk were Suki and Sokka, the former of which couldn’t help but blush over all that she’s heard. “OK, this is a lot more than I needed to know about our new allies.”
Sokka, however, couldn’t stop laughing over this development. “Oh man, this is unbelievable!” He chuckled. “Man I wish Aang were here to hear this!”
“You know, there’s a very simple solution to all of our problems, now that I think of it.” Azula continued. “And it’s very effective as well.”
Upon hearing those words, Zuko quickly lifted his head and turned to his sister. “No, No! Don’t say it, Azula! Don’t even think about suggesting it!”
“Suggesting what?” Suki asked, unknowingly giving the bait.
Azula smirked back at her brother. “A Fire Nation Orgy.”
And after those four words were spoken, all except Azula’s eyes were wide with shock. “I knew she was gonna say that.” Zuko uttered.
Suddenly, and almost as if on cue, the door leading out to the deck busted open, and Ty Lee peered her head out. “Did someone say orgy!?”
“You know it’s a good idea, Zuko.” Azula contested.
“Azula, no.” He replied. “We are not having an orgy!”
“You do know it’s Fire Nation tradition.” Azula countered. “It’s even used to properly celebrate the coronation of a new Fire Lord.”
“Wait a minute.” Suki chimed in. “So technically, you’re not—!”
“I AM the Fire Lord and there wont’ be any Orgy!” Zuko stated firmly. “It’s not happening, Azula!”
“Eh, you’ll warm up to it in time.” She shot back with a confident grin.
“I hope so!” Ty Lee cheered as she dashed over to the group, landing a seat between Sokka & Suki. “Because I already know who I want first!”
Sokka could only shake his head. “You know, I’m starting to think it was safer to stay with Aang…”
It was the dead of night as the full moon shun over the Stone Valley Base, once known to be a mighty fort ran by the equally mighty General Fong. But that was before his mistake of sending Aang prematurely into his Avatar State cost him his rank & his control over the base. Now, it is used as a hidden stronghold by Long Feng; a place to train his greener Dai Li agents until they have mastered enough to join their brethren on the front lines. The current commander of this base though, is someone who is even more feared than the somewhat unorthodox Fong. The two Dai Li agents who stood guard at the front gate spoke of their leader Kyoko, with one not giving very favorable consideration.
“This is an embarrassment.” The first agent, a man with a full stubble stated. “The very idea of us being under orders from a woman, it’s a joke.”
“She is no ordinary woman.” The second agent, a young man in his early 20’s, warned him. “I’ve heard stories of Kyoko’s training and her battles. Long Feng kept her out of the Great War because he wanted to see which side would prevail, and then release her onto them.”
“FEH!!!” The first agent scoffed. “She is still a female! Their only place is in the kitchen cooking my supper…or in my bed. You get me?” The agent let out a loud & hearty laugh at his own joke, a laugh that was cut off by a woman’s voice.
“Do you find something about me funny?”
Both agents turned towards the source of the voice, only to see their commander standing there, Kyoko, flanked by two other agents. “I heard my name mentioned, followed by laughter from this buffoon.” She said, pointing at the older Dai Li.
The young agent quickly dropped to one knee in a show of respect. “No! Nothing at all, ma’am! My sincerest apologies for even mentioning your name!”
The agent with stubble, however, was not so quick to show respect. “Yeah…you know what, I did.” He said, showing defiance. “I’m sick and tired of being under the thumb of some dainty, rank amateur FEMALE! I’m one of the best Earthbenders on the continent! If anything, I should be leading this faction!”
Kyoko simply held her right hand out beside herself. “Hmmm…well, if it is indeed true you are the superior Earthbender, you should have no problem escaping this.” She opened her hand, and in the blink of an eye, a sinkhole appeared under the defiant agent. His body fell inside like a bag of rocks.
“Wha—GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA—!!!!!!”
And as she closed her hand into a fist, in an instant, the opening was gone. The young agent glanced over at the spot, and it appeared as if it had never been touched by bending. He trembled in fear; he had heard of that technique before…Instant Grave. Only used by the most masterful Earthbenders…and Kyoko performed the move as easily as breathing. It was how she earned her appropriate nickname among those she commanded…Cold Kyoko.
“On your feet, I have no time for groveling agents.” She said to the young agent. He didn’t hesitate to obey that order as he jumped back upright. “You will inform the other agents; Master Feng wishes us to move out now and I will not have him disappointed.”
The young Dai Li saluted and was about to move out, until a question arose in his mind. “Ma’am, with all due respect…where are we headed out to?”
Kyoko stopped her stride, and turned her head halfway to address her soldier. “Si Wong, agent.” She told him. “The Desert of the Dead.”
She then continued on her way with her two personal agents flanking her, leaving the young Dai Li with his orders. He gulped hard and his body trembled after hearing her answer. “Aw man, why didn’t I just join the Terra Team?”
