The day had finally arrived, and for the ATOM team, it was none too soon. Agent Lena had not been entirely honest when she had said that the entry simulation was the only one they had left, since the team had gone through every simulation they had ever practiced during the past week. When the time had come for them to leave for the staging area of the operation, an unmarked hummer had arrived to pick them up. From there, they had traveled to the Landmark City airport and loaded onto a small plane to be taken to a smaller military installation. There, the team had been split up, Hawk going with another team while the rest of the ATOM team formed an independent squad. Each group said their good-byes before they boarded their separate aircraft and left for the jungle installations where Lee and Paine were hiding.
----------------------------
Hawk and his team landed in a small jungle ravine after paragliding out of their helicopter to increase the distance the copter could stay away from instruments that might detect it. Quickly slipping his parachute off, Hawk pulled out his map and checked to make sure that his team had landed in the correct area. A cursory glance told him that they had landed about 500 yards away from their intended destination. Not a major issue, they would be able to cover that distance in a few minutes, but it did set them back in their timetable.
“Okay team, let’s move!” Hawk said loudly, enjoying the wonderful feeling that commanding others gave him. Repacking his map, he and his team hurried off, quickly disappearing into the jungle underbrush.
----------------------------
Axel and his team disembarked from their helicopter near a small pond at the base of a jungle waterfall. The original plan had been to para-drop them into the jungle, but recent intelligence had shown that Lee’s security forces patrolled this area of the jungle, making speed a priority to maintaining secrecy. Ground patrols would probably see the parachuting team and quickly radio it in, this way the only way they would know the team was there was if they walked into this clearing while they were unloading.
As soon as the last of their equipment was unloaded, the four members of the ATOM team ran off into the forest. As they traveled through the underbrush, Shark grumbled quietly about how uncomfortable his suit was. The suit he was wearing had been hastily prepared since the equipment used to create the body armor portions was not equipped to handle such a large person. New molds for the armor had to be made for the metal portions of the suit and the machines that inlaid the stealth equipment had to be adjusted so that cloaking elements would be able to cloak the entire suit rather than just portions of it. Regardless of how well it fit, the suit would at least perform the functions that it was intended to, although it was putting uncomfortable some vital parts of his anatomy that he really did not want crushed.
They only had a few miles to run before they reached the perimeter thankfully, although Shark did slightly resent the fact that he was the one carrying all the extra gear. Then again, he was the strongest now and had the largest frame, so it really made sense. The jungles around them were decidedly quiet, the creatures that resided in the jungles around them scurrying for safety as the team passed by. Within a few minutes, they reached the point at which they needed to turn on their upgraded stealth units to avoid detection by the patrol snipers. Once they had activated their cloaking devices, they continued onward, attempting to keep the noise they generated to a minimum. After about an hour’s worth of hiking, they arrived at the perimeter fence, taking note of the snipers positioned about ten yards to either side of them. Taking a deep breath, Shark aimed at the sniper to his right and fired. The sniper jerked backward with a sudden awkwardness before falling backward off the walkway. At the same time, King took out the second sniper, giving the team a good thirty yards to work with on either side. It probably would not be too long before the other snipers noticed, and Shark and King had only winged the men rather than kill them. What they didn’t realize was that two other teams were in the area, clearing out the other snipers.
As they quietly made their way toward the main installation, the team paused to consult a blueprint of the facility. They had several explosive charges to plant before they moved on to taking out Lee and Paine. Shouldn’t be too difficult really.
----------------------------
Hawk and his team had already infiltrated the lightly guarded secondary complex that Lee was using. The place was woefully under-guarded considering how important it would be to Lee’s plan, but who was he to complain? His team easily dispatched the perimeter guards, although Hawk was somewhat curious as to if those guards were still alive or not. Something told him he really didn’t want to know the answer to that question though. While the rest of his team worked on hacking the door lock into the facility, Hawk checked his objectives. According to the layout of the base he had, the captive, Samantha Paine, was being held in one of the lower levels of the compound. The cell that was holding her really was not that far from the entrance of the facility, all Hawk had to do was free her from her imprisonment then lead her to the pick-up zone where they would be airlifted out of the area. Meanwhile, his team would be setting up the explosives necessary to convert this place into a melted slag pile.
Suddenly, Hawk heard a muffled ‘Thump!’ followed by the sound of a door grinding open. Sounded like the assault was underway.
----------------------------
With a few well placed punches and kicks from Shark, King and Axel, the main doors leading into Lee’s primary installation gave way.
“Remind me to teach you Jo-Lan martial arts after this Shark.” Axel said with a smile before their cloaking devices re-established their invisibility. The team worked their way down to where they needed to plant the first set of explosives. After stunning the guards protecting the room containing the rocket fuel, Lioness snuck inside, deftly dodging her way through the perimeter of security lasers before planting the small explosive package on the liquid oxygen tank before doing the same to the liquid hydrogen tank. A few quick flips later and Lioness was back at the room.
“That was easy, let’s move.” she said as her cloak reformed around her. Without wasting time, they quickly headed for their next objective: the fire control valves. Once those were destroyed, there would be no way for Lee or his lackeys to put out the fires started by the explosives.
----------------------------
Hawk and his team had found their way down to the holding cell, taking out several more guards on the way to it. Hawk had to admit, now that he was about to free Samantha Paine; he was starting to wonder if this was such a good idea. Then again, regardless of his personal feelings, his mission was to get her out of here. He had a bad feeling about why they needed to get her out of this place, but nothing to go on. Surprisingly enough, her cell was not difficult to break into; it appeared to be more intended to prevent the use of magnetic powers than contain anyone, although it appeared more than capable of doing so. This place seemed incredibly under-defended, a thought that had been continuously running through Hawk’s mind ever since they had passed through the perimeter fence. With a loud popping sound, the door to the cell was blown open with a small explosive charge and Hawk rushed in first, ready to stun Samantha if need be.
It turned out not to be necessary. As soon as she recognized that he was not one of Lee’s goons, Samantha stopped hiding in the corner of her cell and stood up.
“About time my dad rescued me.” she said in a demeaning tone.
“Actually,” Hawk said as he removed his helmet, “it’s not your dad who is rescuing you. In fact, as far as we know, he’s working with Lee while you stay locked up here.”
“Oh.” Samantha said, seemingly at a loss for words as her smug demeanor seemed to almost collapse away from her.
“Look, now is really not the time, the rest of the team is getting ready to blow this place sky high and we need to get you out of here before that, not to mention I do not really like the idea of being turned into a blackened smear.” Hawk said as he offered her his hand. After a moment of hesitation, she took his hand.
“Lead on Hawk.”
----------------------------
After having placed the explosives required, Axel’s team now had to confront the most difficult part of their mission, the elimination of Lee and Paine.
“I can’t do this.” Shark said quietly, trying to control his breathing.
“Calm down, Shark, we can do this; we must do this.” Axel said as he placed a reassuring hand on his mate’s arm, “You’re not alone.”
“What is wrong?” King asked.
“Nothing, I just don’t want to face them alone, not after what happened last time.” Shark said, looking away from the others as he spoke.
“You won’t be alone Shark, but we need to hurry, we have only a limited amount of time before he need to blow those explosives.”
----------------------------
Lee watched the four members of the ATOM team who had infiltrated his base discuss among themselves. What an interesting development this was, Shark was afraid to be left alone against him or Paine. This should be exploited if at all possible.
“Paine.”
“What?”
“I want you to take care of Shark, finish what you started back in his cell those many months ago if you’d like. I really don’t care what you do, but he’s afraid to face either of us alone and I want to take advantage of that.” Lee said as he walked over to the battle suit he had designed for this occasion, “I will take care of the others and ensure that they are separated. I must say, I am surprised that I didn’t anticipate a strike like this sooner.”
----------------------------
Axel led the team as they ran down the hallways toward Lee’s command center and private suites. That would likely be were the lunatic was at this time of night. He glanced back to check on the others. King was behind him, followed by Lioness and Shark was bringing up the rear; although Axel was hesitant to put him there, but it was the best place for him to be. Despite the fact it made it easy to separate him from the rest of the group. Just as this thought occurred to Axel, a barrier of light cut Shark off from the rest of them.
“Crud! Shark!” Axel cried, whirling around fully and slamming the wall of light with several Jo-Lan techniques.
“Go! You have to stop them! I’ll be fine!” Shark yelled through the barrier.
“We’ll be back for you soon, I promise.” Axel said before they continued down the hall sans Shark.
----------------------------
As soon as they were out of sight, Shark whirled around to face the empty hallway behind him. He knew what was coming next, his heart rate increasing as his stress levels shot up. What he wasn’t expecting though was that the floor underneath him would give way, dumping Shark into a room below the hallway.
“Hello Shark, time to finish what we started back in that subway station.” Paine said as he walked up to Shark, “Good to see you’re already sitting down.”
Shark couldn’t move; he found himself frozen with a strange fear that he couldn’t describe. It was as if he wanted this to happen. Paine didn’t waste time, shoving Shark into a kneeling position.
“You don’t want to resist me, do you Shark?” Paine said in a mocking voice. Shark couldn’t believe it, why was he letting this happen? No, he wouldn’t let anyone other than Axel take him!
“You bet I do you pervert!” Shark yelled, swinging his arm around and smashing Paine back against the far wall of the room. Looking around, he quickly spied a stairway leading up and out of the room and dashed for it. He had to help his friends again.
----------------------------
Axel and the remainder of his team burst into the control center to see Lee sitting on a rather complex looking mechanical chair.
“Well, greetings ATOM team, I trust that you have been quite busy searching my base for me. Although I thought for certain you had another member or two with you… Oh well, your little adventure ends here.” Lee said snidely as a protective screen closed down over him and the chair transformed into a large robot like machine. Although the main body was about the size of Lee, it was flanked by two large gun arms that were nearly as large the main body, connecting to the body a the same level as Lee’s head and extending down to about knee level.
“As you can see, I will not go back to jail easily this time.” Lee said as he opened fire, massive bullets tearing holes in the floor and walls of the room as the guns tracked their way over to where Axel and his team stood. By the time he had however, Axel, Lioness and King had dodged out of the way and were now circling around the room to attack Lee from behind. Quickly realizing their plan, Lee whirled around, spraying half the room down with bullets as he tracked Axel, considering him to be the greatest threat. Unnoticed by Lee however, King used this opportunity to attach two explosives to the back of Lee’s suit. Once he was a safe distance away, Lioness shot both explosives, detonating them in a fiery explosion that launched Lee across the room.
“You… you…” Lee yelled as he got back to his feet, stammering with rage before he took a second to compose himself, “Fine, I started off by underestimating you again… Or did I?”
With a sudden burst of steam, the majority of Lee’s suit was jettisoned, leaving only a sleek suit that fit the profile of his body more than the previous clunky suit. In place of the large guns of the previous suit, two large blades extending from the armor encasing his arms and small squares of light flashed across the suit as hard light armor activated in various places at random intervals. Unlike the dull grey metal of the armor for the previous suit, this new suit was composed of a bright copper metal with lines of brilliant blue circuitry tracing patterns into it.
“Are you ready to die fools?” Lee chuckled as he vanished.
“Where did he go?” Axel managed to get out before Lee coalesced behind him, barely able to dodge out of the way in time to avoid being eviscerated.
“My suit combined with my powers allows me to convert myself into light. You cannot hit me, I am faster than you and I’m not afraid to kill. Surrender to your fate and I promise that you will die painlessly.” Lee said as he examined the blood on his blade.
“Of course, this could get to be a mess…” he continued before his blades wrapped themselves in red glowing plasma, “although you’ll probably appreciate the free cauterizations.” In another second, Lee had vanished again.
“Lioness! Blow those explosives now!” Axel yelled as he rolled out of the way of Lee’s second attack, the slash on his back leaving a red smear on the floor. Lioness, quick to pick up on Axel’s cue, whipped out the detonator and hit the button without a second thought.
----------------------------
Explosions tore through the facility, fire spreading throughout the corridors as another series of explosions disabled the fire suppression systems. In another second, the explosive that had been planted in the fuel depot blew, incinerating nearly half the installation as the hydrogen fires were fueled by the combustible oxygen. From the departing helicopter where Hawk was, we could see the massive fireball rising over the treetops of the jungle.
“What was that?” Samantha asked in curiosity, she knew that it was an explosion, but what had just been blown up?
“Looks like the rest of the team just blew up Lee’s main facility.” Hawk explained as the copter banked away from the exploding base, “The team I was leading should be doing the same to this place fairly soon.”
“You mean the rest of the ATOM team is here?”
“Yeah, their task was to destroy the main base, but I decided saving you should be a priority.” Hawk explained, it was kind of how it had happened at least.
----------------------------
As the explosion rocked the base, Shark was thrown off his feet, crashing through an observation window to land on a control panel. Pain shot along his spine as he felt something in his back crack as the panel was flattened. Standing up carefully, his back still protested, but he didn’t feel any tingling in his extremities or other signs of spinal cord damage. Taking a few steps forward to make sure he was still coordinated, he felt a wave of dizziness wash over him, making him stagger backwards and almost fall over before he regained his balance. Around him, the room had been turned into a nightmare of flame, smoke and debris, parts of the ceiling still crumbling in places as pieces that had been perched precariously fell off and knocked other debris down. Since the explosive were not supposed to be detonated until they were out of the facility, either something had gone horribly wrong or the team had decided that they could not wait any longer to destroy the base. Shark got the distinct feeling it was not the latter reason.
----------------------------
Axel regained consciousness to the sound of inhuman screaming, a sign that his plan had worked, provided it was Lee who was screaming and not King or Lioness. As he staggered to his feet, ignoring the burning pain in his back, he saw Lee lying next to a fragment of the floor that had been tilted at about a forty five degree angle from what it should have been. A pool of blood surrounded Lee where his legs should have been, but only neatly sheared off stumps remained. When the floor fragment had shot up, it had scattered or absorbed the light that Lee’s body was composed of, preventing it from reforming with the rest of him.
“You bloody freak! What have you done to me?!” Lee yelled at Axel, his face an embodiment of rage.
“I’d say you are the bloody freak.” Axel said calmly as he limped over to where Lee was lying, “We didn’t come to arrest you Lee, we were told to terminate you so you never bother anyone again.”
“You can’t do it; you don’t have the stones to kill me.”
“For what you did to Shark, I’m more than willing to make this compromise of my principals.” Axel said as he aimed his blaster at Lee’s head. Suddenly, Lee cried out in sheer rage, then his expression became calm again and his eyes changed from the red color they were used to Lee’s normal color.
“What the…?” Axel said as he lowered his weapon.
“That coward, he can’t face his own death.” Lee said in a pained but calm voice as Lioness and King rushed over.
“Mr. Lee?” Lioness asked her voice tinged with the same confusion they all felt.
“Yes, it’s me… Well, the good fragments of me anyways. Just prior to the Year of Lee I found a way to divide my characteristics in a fashion similar to Dr. Jekyll. The resulting experiment turned me into the Dark Lee you are all familiar with, but it also created me, the shadow of the good Lee that once existed.”
“How could you stand the actions of your darker half?”
“I didn’t, I saved your lives during the Year of Lee and Dark Lee nearly destroyed me for it. Until recently, I was unable to take control of Lee’s body, but when I was able to again, I contacted the government and arranged for your team to be trained so you could destroy this… AURGH!” Lee explained before crying out as he grabbed his head in pain, “I… don’t… have much… time… Dark Lee… will not… let me win…”
“So, it appears the great Lee has a weakness after all.” Paine said as he walked into the room with a gloating expression on his face.
“N…no…” Lee murmured, trying to stay in control. With a quick surge of activity, he vanished only to reappear moments later with one of his blades rammed through Paine’s chest.
“I… have… made too… many… mistakes… I… will… n… not a-allow this to… continue…” Lee managed to get out as the blade slid out of Paine, Paine’s eyes turning glassy as the wound in his heart was cauterized by the extreme heat of the plasma. No longer supported by Paine, Lee fell to the floor, barely making a sound as the remains of his legs slammed against the floor.
“I’m… glad… you… and… your… team… were… able to… finish… this… Please… kill… me… before… it’s too… late…” Lee managed to get out before he passed out.
“I think there will be no need for that…” Shark said as he slowly limped into the room near where Lee was.
“Shark! You’re alright!” Axel said, running over to hug Shark tightly.
“I couldn’t let anyone else but you be with me.” Shark said politely as he enveloped Axel in a return hug. Another explosion rumbled through the base as the electrical systems set fire to the auxiliary fuel depots.
“We need to get out of here. Now.” Lioness said with finality as another rumble coursed through the base, “We should take Lee with us though… without his help we might not have ever been about to accomplish this.”
The others nodded as Shark scooped up the remains of Lee’s body before turning to follow the rest of the team out.
