On the way back to the virtual meadow, Icy mulled over the scene that had played out at the end of her session with Dr. Shreever. The two of them had been sitting on opposite ends of the couch, verbally sparring, when the timer on the desk chimed signalling the end of Icy's hour. The two of them stood up but Dr. Shreever placed a hand on her arm to stop her from leaving.
"Wait Icy. I have something I need to ask you before you go."
Icy shifted her stance to the left and looked at him quizzically.
"Well, what is it?"
Dr. Shreever regarded her with a steady, serious gaze.
"I want to know how Stormy hurt her back yesterday."
Icy gave an exhasperated sigh and put one hand on her hip.
"Darcy already told you. Stormy was climbing a tree and she fell."
Dr. Shreever held one finger pointed up in the air.
"No, what Darcy told me is that she was hanging from a branch and it broke."
Icy frowned at him.
"So? What's the difference? She hurt herself falling out of a tree. Why does it matter how it happened?"
Dr. Shreever placed a hand on Icy's shoulder.
"It matters because I worry about the possibility that something like that could happen to her again. We've never had a guest injure herself in the virtual meadow before, and quite frankly I find the incident a trifle disturbing. Tell me Icy. You know Stormy far better than I do. In your estimation, is Stormy what you would consider a stable individual?"
Icy gave him an amused smirk.
"Oh yeah. Real stable. About as stable as a seven foot stack of dishes."
Dr. Shreever nodded solemnly.
"As I feared. I suspect Stormy is an accident waiting to happen. That is why I want to give you this."
He stuck his right hand up his left sleeve and withdrew something which he placed in Icy's hand. When Icy looked she saw it to be a small blue button-like gem set in a silver clasp, just like the one Dr. Shreever wore on his collar. She looked up at him questioningly.
"It's a communications crystal."
Dr. Shreever nodded.
"Yes. It's specificly attuned to the one I wear. Should anything happen to Stormy, or any of you for that matter, just press the crystal and call for me. I'll come to you immediately."
Icy smirked at the notion that they would need to call upon him for anything.
"Aaaw, how sweet. And here I didn't get you anything."
Dr. Shreever ignored her snide comment.
"Remember, this is for emergency use only. Keep it fastened inside your sleeve where the guards won't see it. Strictly speaking, patients aren't supposed to have these."
Icy's eyes lit up with mischeif.
"Well well. Quite the rules breaker aren't you? You must really like us."
Dr. Shreever grinned and winked at her.
"Don't tell anyone I said this, but you three are actually my favorite patients."
Icy had wanted to tease him some more about this revelation but Dr. Shreever had hustled her out of his office and sent her on her way back to the virtual meadow with her escort. She kept the com crystal carefully hidden in her palm during the trip back since she hadn't had a chance to properly hide it before she left. Ordinarily Icy wouldn't have shown much interest in magic as weak and pedestrian as a mere communications crystal, but with no powers of her own at present she was hungry for any scrap of magic she could lay her hands on. Besides that, the fact that she wasn't even supposed to have it at all just made it all the more appealing, in spite of it's relative uselessness. Who knew? Perhaps between them she and Darcy could figure a way to convert it into an eaves-dropping device or something.
When they arrived back in the virtual meadow they discovered Darcy sitting in the grass along the side of the main path, evidently waiting. Stormy was nowhere in sight. When she saw Icy emerging from the portal, Darcy waved.
"Hey Icy! Over here!"
Icy and the guards strolled over to where Darcy was sitting. One of the guards gestured for her to stand up.
"Come along Darcy. It's your turn to see Doctor Shreever."
Darcy shook her head with an amused grin.
"Not just yet. I'm waiting for Stormy. She's got a little entertainment cooked up for us, so stick around. You might get a kick out of this."
Icy quirked an eyebrow.
"Stormy providing entertainment? Oh, this ought to be good."
Darcy smirked back at her.
"She's been practicing the whole time you were gone, and I gotta say, she's gotten pretty good."
She glanced up the path to her right.
"See for yourselves. Here she comes now."
A teenage boy and girl dressed in the ubiquitous tan robes worn by all the patients at Light Haven came strolling down the path with their arms around each other. It was a pair of holograms the trio had taken to calling 'the lovebirds'. Every day, several times an hour, they would walk down this path, stop in front of the tree across the path from where Darcy was sitting, stare deeply into each others eyes for a moment, kiss, then be back on their way. This time however the girl appeared to be sporting a thundercloud of curly black hair with white bangs that clashed strikingly with the long blond hair cascading down her back. It didn't take Icy and the two guards any time at all to figure out that Stormy was walking in step with the holograms, occupying the same space as the girl and keeping her movements exactly in sync. Icy snickered when she noticed that the girl wasn't the only one sporting a strange addition to her hairstyle. A pair of fingers was sticking up through the top of the boy's head in imitation of rabbit ears.
The pair stopped underneath the tree and turned to gaze lovingly into each others eyes. As they stood there the girl began speaking with Stormy's voice. The words came out stilted and unnatural, full of unnecessary dramatic pauses, as though spoken by an actress without the least trace of acting ability.
"Oh, Ken. My... beloved. You are... SUCH... a total... dweeb. How I... LONG... to... scratch out... your eyes... and feed them... to... my pet... gorantula."
As the two leaned in to kiss Stormy turned away, separating herself from the image of the girl, and pantomimed gagging herself with a finger. She left the two lovebirds to their tender embrace and walked back over to Icy and Darcy who were laughing and applauding her performance. Even one of the guards chuckled a bit until the other one elbowed him in the ribs.
"Ow! What? It was funny."
The other guard glared at him.
"Don't encourage them."
Icy favored Stormy with an approving grin.
"Nice performance. You really butchered the delivery on that one. I can't decide if you did that on purpose or whether you just can't act."
Stormy took a bow and grinned back.
"Thanks. That's how it was supposed to sound. It was Darcy's idea. She said it would be a lot funnier if I hammed it up."
Darcy stood up and clapped a hand on Stormy's shoulder.
"Her acting wasn't too bad, but the lines totally stunk. I couldn't come up with anything better, so I just helped her find a funnier way to say them."
Icy's grin faded into a smirk.
"Well, don't quit your day jobs you two. By the way, I thought we were calling the guy Romeo. What's with the name change?"
Stormy shrugged.
"Romeo took too long to say. It threw the timing off once I started putting in all those pauses. They kept kissing before I was done. Yuck! So I changed it to Ken to make it fit."
The humorless guard gestured irritably.
"Alright, you've had your fun. Time to go now Darcy."
Darcy crossed her arms and frowned at them.
"You know, it's not fair that you keep calling us by our names but we don't even know yours."
The serious guard stood there facing her woodenly.
"You don't need to know our names. If you must refer to us you can just call me guard number 1."
The other guard grinned mirthfully.
"And you can call me guard number B.
His grin disappeared as the other guard scowled at him. Darcy walked over to drape an arm around each guard's shoulders with a grin of her own.
"Well then One and Bee, let's get going. We're off to see a Warlock."
She glanced back over her shoulders to wink at her sister witches.
"Catch you girls later. Don't wait up for me!"
Icy watched them go with a mild frown. Her expression changed to a grin as the portal closed behind them. After all, she reminded herself, Darcy's flirtatiousness was one of the many qualities she loved about her. No sense getting jealous of guys who stood no chance of ever capturing her heart. She turned back to Stormy.
"Come on. Let's go see what other holograms we can make fun of."
