Chapter 9: War Games
Zim paced in front of the clock, eyeing it occasionally. Dib had less than thirty minutes left. The human was certainly cutting it close. He pulled the device controlling the collar out of his pocket, jumping when the computer addressed him.
“Master, there is someone at the door.”
Zim waved off the robot butler, opening the door himself. He stepped back as Dib staggered in, hauling a heavy suitcase behind him, letting go of it and flopping down onto the couch, panting heavily.
“Everything…you asked for…should be there…” he panted.
Zim shut the door slowly, cautiously extending one of his tentacles to flip open the latch on the suitcase, just in case Dib had bugged it or something. The case popped open, overflowing with papers and maps.
Dib tugged at the collar on his neck. He’d been able to go home and bathe, and was now wearing a skin-tight black Offspring t-shirt and a baggy pair of jeans. He’d been awake the full 24 hours, and there were heavy shadows under his eyes, which were a little red and kept drooping shut. He shifted uncomfortably, tugging at the collar again. “Uh…can you take this thing off of me now?”
Zim was already rifling through the papers, reading some of the data. “Hmm? Oh.” His eyes narrowed. “No. No, I don’t think I will remove it just yet. I will, however, shut it off.” He pulled the programmer out of his pocket and turned off the toxin release mechanism, then went back to searching through the papers.
Dib relaxed a little, now that the burning sensation around his throat had stopped. He drowsily watched Zim rifle through the papers, then got up, going over and kneeling next to him.
“Should we bring this stuff downstairs to your lab?”
Zim looked at him for a moment and then nodded. “I think that would be wise.”
A few minutes later, everything from the suitcase was spread out neatly on a large table in Zim’s lab. The maps were large and detailed, and very specifically marked as to where the military bases and missile launch sites were located, as well as high population areas and other important information, and Zim scanned them greedily, the grin on his face growing larger by the minute.
“Excellent…” he purred. “This is excellent, Dib.”
Dib was brought out of his sleep-deprived haze when Zim used his first name. Unsure what to make of it, he simply smiled, his eyes drifting closed again.
Zim caught sight of a file off to one side that had an odd, cryptic symbol on it. The symbol almost looked Irken in design. He pulled the folder out, his antennae twitching as he read the cover, then looked at Dib.
“What do these words mean?”
Dib opened his eyes, looking over and giving Zim a sleepy, sadistic grin. “That’s the most powerful weapon that mankind has ever invented. And—” he yawned widely, “—it’s also one of the easiest to use.”
As Dib’s head finally drooped down to the table and he began to snore, Zim looked at the two words on the cover.
